Here for a layover and decided to check out this sushi spot. Located only 15 or so minutes from the airport it was located on a strip mall and offered the conveniences of free WiFi, kind wait staff and fresh sushi at excellent prices! Would definitely come back in the future. read more

I love how close the location is from my apartment but slightly pricey. We tried the gyoza, poke tuna salad, spring falling roll, Vegas roll, the chicken yakisoba, and chocolate lava cake. The server was extremely attentive, there was definitely some hits and misses. But I love the area and the patio is cute & comfortable. read more

I have been nicknamed the Sushi Monster for how much I can consume in a sitting and having been cut off by not one but two sushi buffets in my lifetime. I have eaten my plethora of sushi from grocery store to some of the highest end in numerous cities spanning the globe. The greatest perk of Yama Sushi House is that they are available for delivery. Also, the sushi is fresh. The rolls are good here. I love getting the love boat for two ... that I eat alone. The sushi dinner of 9 pieces of sushi is also good but always have to supplement with a roll or two. So the only downfall and why only 4 stars? If you're a big sushi fiend like me, you may end up paying quite a bit to feel full. The rolls are a bit pricier here than I've seen at other sushi places and with the same quality. Otherwise, for the convenience of ordering in good sushi and not getting my fat, lazy bum off the sofa, it is a great spot. read more

Used to go to yama in high school all the time came back for lunch on a saturday it was not busy at all. Food was delicious, music choice was great, waiter Jake was very attentive and we used a coupon. Reasonably priced. Tonkotsu wasn't my favorite as you can tell they specialize in sushi and not ramen. Baked lobster roll and the shrimp tempura roll was was delicious, spicy garlic edamame was appetizing, and crème brûlée to top it off was just what I needed. Ask for a side of chili to give your soup some spice. read more

I pride myself on knowing where sashimi is good clean and fresh in the desert. Just so happens we were looking at tuxedos next door and needed a quick bite. I am very very glad we decided to stop on. The staff was polite and attentive 5/5 star The nigiri and sashimi was hands down delicious, and had me doing double takes at what I had just eaten. My mouth is re-watering and I just finished eating it! The small place tells me they concentrate on quality not quantity I will 200% be back and bring people who enjoy sushi with me ! read more

I'm giving this place a 3 stars because of their rude hostess who greeted me. I walk in and there is a huge plexiglass that separated her from me. She didn't say hi when I walked in. I had to tell her that I was there to pick up an order. She didn't smile, wasn't friendly, and didn't seem like she was happy a customer had just walked in. Now onto what was ordered: Scorpion king roll: Tempora shrimp, crab stick, cream cheese, and cucumber inside, topped with spicy tuna, eel sauce and and house spicy sauce. Served with a "spider" soft shell crab. Overall, it was a tasty roll. Had good flavor, cucumber was crunchy. The crab that came with it didn't have much flavor. Hot night roll: Crab mix and avocado cucumber inside, spicy tuna on top with spicy Mayo and eel sauce. This one was our favorite. It had good flavor and was spicy. Spicy tuna roll: your typical spicy tuna roll. Was good. We literally live within walking distance so if we were desperate for sushi, we would try the place again. All three rolls came out to $36, which honestly isn't great but is so so. I've had less expensive sushi, with way better customer service and better priced. read more

We had a great dinner here on Sunday night before a show at the Van Buren. This is a small but lively place with great modern sushi but also authentic/classic Japanese dishes. Everything was beautifully plated and delicious from the nigiri chef's choice to the agedashi tofu and so on. The waiter was attentive but not bothersome. Everything was just right. read more

Came on a Sunday night, the restaurant was about half full. We were seated immediately outside, and given water and copies of the menu. Ambience is very simple inside, but clean. We ordered quickly, and the food was served within minutes after we ordered. The sushi was worse than average. I was actually really unhappy about picking this restaurant. We also had gyoza, which tasted like it was made from a packet, and not cooked enough. The service was very friendly, which slightly made up for the mediocre food. This is literally our go to for sushi. Which means you're likely to find us here on a Friday around 5:55pm. Walking in just before HH ends. We love the staff, the owners are so nice. We've been coming here for the past 8 years since they opened. Now our goal is to just try everything on the menu. Our go to's are: the tuna lover, the Las Vegas, the lobster roll, the albacore roll with red onions, so many - anything is good. For dessert we usually get crème brûlée. But again anything is good. We've never had a bad experience. The patio is pretty chill, even though we have our favorite table inside. Now you can find someone playing music outside on the patio as well. Really good sushi and main dishes! Fresh. Flavorful. We all loved what we ordered. Mongolian beef - great tasting and not greasy like some Asian dishes where they add way too much oil. Also it was not too sweet as some restaurants add way too much sugar - totally unnecessary if you're using fresh healthy ingredients and spices. Sugar ruins the meal and gives a "cheap" fast-food experience. Know that the Pineapple chicken is battered and deep fried. So good going down but not so good going out - if you know what I mean. Wasabi -yum. Fresh. Spicy enough to clear your sinuses. I didn't care for the coating on the green tea ice cream balls - or mango. What was it? Sticky stretchy gooey like colored glue paste. Stick with the creme (cream) brûlée. Very good!! read more

We were craving sushi with nice outdoor vibes and we found it! I was taking 2 international students out for dinner and they loved the food. We came on a Wednesday night and it wasn't crowded around 6:30pm. However, as it started getting later we noticed it got busier. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door. They have a bar area, indoor and outdoor seating. Food came in a timely manner and it was all delicious. We might have ordered too much food. The rolls were big. Which was awesome! Highly recommend this place. However I will say parking was a little confusing. The parking at front has designations by the restaurant but I'm unsure if there's additional parking elsewhere. read more

I ordered from Yama Sushi House for delivery today. I always lower my expectations when I order something (especially sushi) for delivery because I understand it's normal for quality to go down during the 40-60 minute delivery time. The philly roll I got was good. I asked for eel sauce on the side and was not surprised that they didn't include it as it's easy to forget and I didn't really mind. The takoyaki was the the worst takoyaki I've ever had. Takoyaki is one of my favorite foods and I get it as often as I can. It's pretty hard to mess up as most places usually just deep fry the frozen already made balls and top it with sauce and katsuobushi and toppings. My takoyaki was so dry with almost no sauce at all. No flavor at all. The only good thing I can say about it is that it was still warm when I got it. The other problem I had with my order is how small and pathetic my order of ikura was. Can you believe this tiny pathetic thing is $6? Not only was it the smallest portion as if it were for a toddler, it was rubbery and didn't taste good at all? I don't mind it being a little warm from the delivery trip. I can excuse that with no problem. But if you're going to give me this laughable portion, it should at least taste decent. Doubtful that I will ever try this place again. At least the philly roll was good though! read more

I decided to give Yama Sushi one more try. They have begun charging for tempura sauce when a customer orders delivery shrimp tempura roll. They forgot the sauce 3 orders ago and charged me the past two orders. So tonight I made sure to place a note for a side of tempura sauce for the shrimp tempura roll. Delivery arrived and there was NO TEMPURA SAUCE. I called....got a sorry and could you come pick up the sauce. I just paid to have the order delivered. I love stopping in at this local sushi spot on Central Ave. in Phoenix. It's everything I want in a restaurant and nothing I don't. The people are super friendly, the service is quick, the food is fresh, and there's always something new on the menu I haven't tried. Tonight I got adventurous and went for the takoyaki appetizer. Basically its octopus (tako) thats been battered and shaped into a ball using a specialized griddle. They top it with bonito and eel sauce (I think). They are DELICIOUS! Next, the green lip mussels. These are available at most places, but for some reason, Yama's are my favorite... First, they are HUGE! They are easily more than a mouthful and are the perfect balance of umami flavor. I could have these every visit, no question. Last, I ordered the ama ebi, "sweet shrimp ". When ordering, be sure the server understands you want the deep fried head version... its a raw, sweet tail and a lightly tempura or corn starched fried head. LOVE it! Yama Sushi is great. They have a wide variety of rolls to choose from, including other food dishes, in case you're not in the mood for sushi. My personal favorites are the phoenix roll, the pink lady roll, and the spicy salmon roll. I cannot comment on its authenticity, but it's pretty good. It can get busy on weekends, but I've never had to wait over 30 minutes to be served. The ambiance is cozy, with outdoor seating as an option as well. Unfortunately I cannot give them five stars although the sushi was five stars. Tonight, I visited Yama Sushi house with my friend. She had been telling me she wanted to try it and it was centrally located to both of us with a train coming and going for easy access. This place would be five stars if the servers were better at their job but the first thing you're looking for with a 70$ sushi bill is good service as well as fresh, good sushi. And I only got one. Although my sake mull was delicious as well. I ordered the spicy salmon, spicy crab, shrimp tempura, salmon nigiri, and another specialty roll with spicy salmon. I can't remember the name. In total 53 dollars worth of sushi, plus a ten dollar saki mule. NO TIP. I am not the girl who doesn't tip but after being seated fairly quickly we sat and waited for even a greet for over ten minutes. Then she came and took another fifteen minutes with no drinks, but the drink was delicious. Our sushi came quickly but for the poor service she didn't even apologize. They walked around cleaning tables before they even came over. The restaurant is so slow it shouldn't take 4 servers for 15 tables. Do better and I would love to come back. read more

Their sushi is good. There was nothing in my particular order thank made me think it was the best I ever had, however, it is Arizona. I like the price and the good quality for the price you pay. They do have some really good signature roles I would like to go back and try. The staff is super nice and it's in the same plaza as my fav boba tea place so it's worth an evening. We were here during happy hour which was not the best for us as we do not drink. From the happy hour menu we ordered miso soup which was too salty. I added some water to it which improved the saltiness. The udon and the unagi bowl from the dinner menu were both good. We needed more vegetables so I would say we might have been better off to go at lunch and try the bento lunch which would give us a better sampling and variety. The salmon sushi was ok, not really sushi rice flavoring on the rice as sushi should be. Service was just ok as I needed to ask for my beverage to be refilled and then had to wait awhile for him to get back to me. There was only one server for the whole place at happy hour, which I did not like. Ambience was good. I don't have a desire to return here. read more

After being creative with groceries for nearly two weeks (aka cooking more than I usually do) I'm #grateful for delivery from @yamasushihouse today. We hadn't been there since moving to the new but it was on the "Wanna Go" Yelp list. It's definitely on the #favorites list now. I find myself wondering how many restaurants can sustain this temporary closure due to Covid-19 restrictions but I'm hopeful they can hang in there because at least they can deliver and the food was awesome! We'll be ordering again next week I'm sure. I mean, I'm nearly out of everything in my cooking repertoire and nobody wants to go back to college-era mac-n-cheese with canned tuna. I was here for happy hour and id say it was worth it! I was sat right away and service was very fast at first. Rolls came out almost instantly as did the soup. Once I received my food, i had to flag down my server who was on her phone behind the sushi bar for what I needed. I wanted to order one more roll. Very nice and very prompt service, but seeing her there on her phone while i needed something wasnt great. Rolls were good size, nigiris had just the right amount of rice, and fish quality wasnt bad! read more

This spot used to be our go to for carry out. Sadly the disorganization for pickup makes me not want to order again Ordered online. Called to verify pickup time, not ready more than 30 mins after pickup time. Man I hate leaving bad reviews but my experience today felt like amateur hour. Ordered pick up on a road trip back home to eat at hotel with fam. Order states it's done on app but have to wait, not a huge deal. When I walk in there are 4 staff just sitting/standing around a customer table not doing much and give you that look. Best part is as they start packing sushi (10 min late) into the paper bags, the chef asks one of the young women to help, in front of me she appears bothered and grumbles and complains that she has to help. They all looked like they were fighting to do the least amount of work. They ended up confusing a part of the order as well, again not a huge deal. I also watched another worker as she literally dropped my house salad on the floor near the kitchen. she shrugs as the lid didn't come off and just packs it into the bag. See photo for what the salad looks like. I don't blame her for the quality of the salad though, it's obviously lettuce almost about to go bad and soggy served up by someone in the back. Sushi quality. Okay, not great. Some cuts were decently fresh but the tuna tasted like frozen tuna from restaurant depot. Salmon was decently fresh. Tamago was store bought. Found a couple fish scales in mouth. Cuts were pretty thin. Definitely over priced for the quality and quantity of fish. $17 for a tiny roll seems a bit much. Tried 2x nigiri chefs choice, 1x sashimi, house salad, udon and one specialty roll. All these things are all forgivable but physically showing that you are bothered because you have to help a customers already late order get bagged needs to be fixed. A lot of people are fine with mediocre sushi, but it needs to be coupled with at least average customer service. Not sure if a manager or owner is present but some leadership and training is needed. read more

I booked a solo seat at the bar just two hours before dinner, which, in hindsight, should have been my first clue. The night before, my plans at Chilte had evaporated after I arrived to discover the owner was hosting a baby shower and the ceilings were being painted instead of dinner being served. I wasn't eager to go 0-for-2 on my Scottsdale food pilgrimage. Pulling into what looked more like an aging roadside motor lodge than the home of a James Beard-recognized restaurant, I wondered if Google Maps had developed a sense of humor. I parked around back, followed the sign to the dining room, and found... a locked door. Naturally. For a brief moment I thought the Arizona restaurant gods were playing another practical joke. Then I spotted another entrance simply marked "Bar." Inside, Hai Noon revealed itself as a tiny oasis. Phoenix met Tokyo somewhere in a dimly lit room with clean lines, warm wood, and mellow music humming through the speakers. Three other guests occupied the restaurant--a couple finishing dinner and what appeared to be a delightfully intimate two-person baby shower. I took my place at the bar. The server welcomed me warmly. When I admitted I was in town for work and wanted to experience the restaurant rather than order safely, he smiled and took control. A few menu staples were unavailable but he confidently selected four dishes. The grapefruit avocado hamachi spoons arrived first and immediately justified the trip. Rich, buttery fish balanced against bright citrus acidity with avocado quietly stitching everything together. It's the kind of bite that reminds you why chefs obsess over simplicity done well. The white fish carpaccio followed with a little theater. Hot sesame oil was poured tableside, barely kissing the fish into submission. Fun presentation. Beautiful execution. Though once the spectacle faded, the dish itself never quite reached the same emotional high as the hamachi. The garlic butter mushrooms arrived... in a plastic bag. It shouldn't have worked. It absolutely did. Deeply savory, unapologetically rich, and refreshingly unconcerned with appearances. The house chicken, unfortunately, couldn't keep pace. Twice fried and topped with egg salad alongside a chili vinegar, it sounded far more exciting than it tasted. Sometimes clever combinations simply refuse to become memorable food. Cocktails, however, were another story. My first choice--the Kosho--was unavailable, so I settled on the Japanese Moss, a gin cocktail topped with yuzu cold foam. The foam leaned aggressively tart but never overwhelmed the drink. Later, after finally coaxing the bartender away from his phone, he suggested an off-menu serrano-infused rum cocktail with miso. Complex, vegetal, spicy, balanced. Exactly the sort of drink you hope to discover when you stop ordering from menus. By 7 p.m., I was the only customer left. Summer in Phoenix is merciless. One hundred thirteen degrees has a way of convincing even adventurous diners to stay home. I watched two reservations cancel while chatting with the bartender and server, who explained that between May and August, three tables can qualify as a good night. Location doesn't help either. Hidden behind an unassuming hotel, Hai Noon isn't exactly benefiting from walk-in traffic. The chef emerged from the kitchen several times during service. Each time he glanced at the empty reservation book, quietly acknowledged another cancellation with a shake of his head, and disappeared back into the kitchen without speaking to anyone. There was something heartbreaking about it. Here was someone capable of creating award-winning food, still chasing perfection while circumstances far beyond the plate slowly worked against him. Hai Noon isn't flawless. Service occasionally drifted. One dish missed the mark. The room felt almost too empty. But I'd rather spend an evening in an imperfect restaurant full of ambition than a polished dining room serving food without a soul. I just hope Scottsdale's relentless summer doesn't prove too Hai for many more Noons.

Amazing sushi!! We recently just moved to the downtown Phoenix area, and there is lots of restaurants to choose from. I was scrolling through Yelp and came across this new sushi restaurant! Since we moved we haven't found our new sushi spot in this part of town, but we did now! Currently, I'm pregnant so going out to eat is not fun or enjoyable, so I decided to place an order for take-out for my boyfriend to pick up on his way home. The food was amazing!! It was ready in about 15 minutes which is awesome and super convenient! I got the shrimp tempura roll and it was amazing! We also ordered the sashimi combo and spicy yellowtail roll, and my boyfriend loved them! The sashimi pieces were big and thick compared to other places in town and very fresh! The presentation was beautiful, even in take-out. They gave us plenty of soy sauce, wasabi, and lots of ginger! Which I love because I can eat the pickled ginger just like that, so I was pleased to see we got plenty! Pricing was great and comparable to others sushi spots, but the customer service and food was top notch! So well worth coming here over other sushi bars. My boyfriend even asked me if I have been there before because the owners were asking about my pregnancy and to bring the baby in when she is born! Which is great to make customers feel more comfortable rather than a quick transaction! The lunch specials look AH-mazingggg and priced well, so I cannot wait to have my baby and make this my regular spot! We are avid sushi goers, on average we would go about three times a week before getting pregnant! So I can't wait to come into the restaurants and check out the ambiance and environment! I have been to nearly every AYCE sushi spot in Phoenix and this one is a step above the rest. Every item tasted like it came from a high-end sushi bar. The customer service was equally impressive. The staff were attentive, friendly, and quick without ever making us feel rushed. They checked in often, made great recommendations, and ensured we had everything we needed. On top of that, the menu variety is incredible. From classic favorites to creative specialty rolls, there's something for everyone. While the restaurant had monthly special rolls, we went with the spicy calamari, 2 chef special rolls and salmon sashimi. Appetizer-Spicy Calamari: The fried calamari rings were drenched in a sweet garlicky spicy sauce over a bed of fresh cabbage. I love garlic so this dish was bursting with flavor. My only critique was I hope it was more on the lighter crispier side like what you would get with tempura flakes. Chef Special Roll #1: Magic Roll smoked salmon with cream cheese wrapped in story paper and drizzled in spicy mayo and eel sauce...I'm usually not a proponent of cream cheese in sushi but this one was a winner. read more

So my spouse and I ate at this wonderful restaurant last night and to begin with everyone there was really polite. Very good sushi. The rolls are large and full of the good stuff. I had special and got the Hawaii roll. Amazing. Kid even ate all the miso soup, so it's got to be good. They take the sanitizer thing seriously; individually wrapping the silverware was good touch. Amazing food, and a great atmosphere as well! The wait was reasonable and overall me and my friends had a great time. The service was astounding, as well as our server, Nikki. She was very helpful in suggesting things for us to try on the menu, such as the gyoza, since we had never tried the food at this restaurant before. Our wait person was the same one we had previously. Her mood was Just pleasant enough to pass the pleasantry test but with a dose of " if I have to be nice to one more idiot..." simmering just below the surface. The food was "fine". My trout almandine had large chunks of nuts overpowering the fish. A different way of serving a dish that usually has a nice crispy delicate coating. This was like a lumberjack was coming to dinner and they wanted him full. Wonderful warm sourdough bread. Fresh, perfect green beans with scalloped potatoes that tasted as if they had been reheated from some earlier conception date. The bread pudding dessert was a nicely done finale but that was soured by our request for some decaf to go o with it. Our waitress said she would be happy to make some. I lifted my expectations momentarily at the thought of a nice fresh cup of steaming coffee accompanying the dessert. She came back two minutes later to deposit two mugs at our table. I thought, "wow, how do you brew pot that fast?" And then I tasted it and I knew. This coffee had been sitting on the burner for at least a few hours. Most of us know that specific taste. Which also means, since she said they didn't have any decaf made...that this was caffeinated. A double whammy for that time a of night. Sad to say, I had nothing last nite that would persuade me to negotiate a parking lot full of gym goers so that you have to park 10 min away,in the heat, for only so-so food served less than graciously.

We arrived a little after 5pm and the restaurant was mostly empty. But in the next 20 minutes it filled up and there was open sitting at the bar only. We asked our waiter a few questions about a few of their rolls and he was very helpful with guidance and recommendations. We ordered Salmon Lemon, Spicy Tuna, Salmon Avocado Maki and California rolls to share for two. This restaurant uses purple rice rather than traditional white rice. This was the first time we have tried a sushi roll made with purple rice and we both loved it. It added a nutty flavor and hearty texture. Purple rice is similar to wild rice and far nutritionally superior to white rice with more antioxidant and fiber. Shortly after we ordered we were served a potsticker dish. I mentioned that we did not order the item and were informed the appetizer was complementary. We thanked the server and tasted the dish. The potstickers were nicely pan fried and had a great crust and flavorful chicken filling. Delicious! About five minutes later our rolls were delivered. All were fresh tasting and delicious. Our favorite was the Salmon Lemon roll. We loved the pop the lemon added. Honorable mentions to the Spicy Tuna roll, very well done, excellent balance of heat and flavors. We truly enjoyed our dining experience and look forward to returning. Highly recommended for a quality sushi experience!
