We came here based on its 4-star reviews. What a disappointment! The sushi dishes on the conveyor belt looked and tasted like they had been out there for ages. After a couple dishes, we stopped getting sushi and ordered stir fried noodles and teriyaki chicken. Worst chicken we've ever had! Chicken was over marinated and way too salty. Well, we've been to Yama Sushi now about 6 times: Early, busy, and late. It has become a favorite, replacing McDonald's. but we need to take a break. I want to call this break a conservation effort to save the fish instead of saving me. While there are many tables, there also always seems to be room at the 36 seat circular/oblong "bar" where the boats slide by with temptations. The staff is very helpful. The folks behind the bar are willing to fix anything you want, but I did confuse them with my request for a crisp garlic pizza. So I lowered my head and mumbled to just point out the fish with lots of mercury. They did not laugh at my joke(?).We came in very late the other night, 9:00 (close at 9:30). They were starting to clean up. The shrimp boats were riding high on the water with less offerings to show. The staff though repeatedly asked/volunteered to make up something fresh for us. I have had tuna (red, white, super white), all without thinking that tuna is over fished, then salmon and seared salmon, and chirashi (all raw fish). She sticks to the printed menu favoring the grilled salmon of which I've stolen small enjoyable bites. I'm working on my *proper* chop stick technique. I am studying youtube videos on how to hold chop sticks I have progressed to having cramps in my fingers the moment I pick up the sticks. Recently the party next to us volunteered to leave a set of rubber band connected chop sticks at the counter for me with my name on them. Now I'm thinking of manning up and asking for a fork before they just slip the darn fork next to my plate once again. It would be nice if the music were more my style. Say something quiet, like blue suede shoes or hound dog or you know, something else real fitting for a sushi bar. Last time, there were some folks there doing a sing along that included the folks behind the bar, something written in the last 10 years, so I could not understand the words. On a recent return trip to Yama, I had the experience of observing a member of the kitchen staff use the toilet without washing his hands, even in a perfunctory manner. I brought this to the attention of one of the owners who promised to speak to the employee. Not good enough. My wife and I left shortly afterwards for another restaurant. We may try it again. If you've traveled to any coastal city, or japan for those lucky enough to do so, you've more than likely had good sushi. The kind of sushi that is fresh, moist, and overall delicious. This is not that sushi. Don't get me wrong, it's good, just not that good. Being in a landlocked area confines us to less than fresh, or at the least, frozen ingredients. They do a good job with what they can get. Prices are on par with others, and the sushi boats are a novel idea that gives a little whimsy to your dining experience, many of the chefs take requests too. Service is quick and the staff is always nice. Overall I'd say try it out for lunch (they have good deals then), if you like it, go back for dinner and sit down and enjoy some specials. read more

Friendly staff who are happy to explain the ingredients floating around and if you don't see something on the boats that you would like to try you can request it. Love the Sushi boat! Ask for Mark to make his fried chicken roll, it is really good! My favorite is the Mango Roll! My daughter loves the honey shrimp and the pineapple. The best part is when u dnt see what u want you can ask them to make it. There plate prices are reasonable. read more

I love Yama Sushi! The Chicken roll is my favorite. I come in to fill my craving every month or so. I saw that someone said that their food is not made fresh. I have not witnessed that. Terrible dining experience. The food was not fresh, and nothing scares me more than old raw fish! Some of the boats went around for over an hour with the same plates on them! Yuck! Also, the service and attitude of the staff was terrible. The sushi chef overheard our conversation about how long some of the food had been out and "told" the owner, who came over to us with a very confrontational attitude. Very unprofessional and rude. So... I'm not a reviewer and I'm normally not even a complainer. But this has to be said: Yama gave me and my fiancé the worst food poisoning we've ever experienced. We used to be HUGE fans, coming multiple times a month always ordering something new and loving everything we were served. But this time, somehow everything we ordered was actually rotten. We got a crab meat appetizer in particular that consisted of a greenish mush (we now suspect this to be the main culprit) one bite into it and we both nearly gagged. The meat was completely inedible, should have never left the kitchen. We picked apart one of the remaining pieces of crab to find that yes, the meat was fully rotten, almost paste-like and yellowish green in color. After seeing the manager yell at her own employees we decided to just leave and not say anything to the manager about our experience but I decided the unsuspecting customer should be warned. If you want to avoid food poisoning I'd suggest giving this place a pass, I'd feel safer eating gas station sushi than eating here again. Honestly just appalling. read more

Went to lunch with friends and my mom from out of town. Food we good but towards the end as desert was the topic, my eyes glared at the boats as a tray of oysters went by and a small cockroach was crawling from the oysters to the pineapple plate. I graded the plate off the boat setting it down on the waiter box with roach running. The waiter cringed and said sorry. I went to pay and speak to someone and the guy acted like I was too stupid to know what a roach looks like and it was a standard house roach not the big outdoor type. He tried to correct me saying it was a bug from the sea from fresh oysters killed that morning. Yet the other waiter told me sorry the guy in charge somehow acted like its okay to have any bugs crawling plate to plate. Nothing was done about it other than tossing the bug in the trash with the plate of oysters. Yuck I will not be going back ever as they seem to think roaches are sanitary! My boyfriend and I, while maybe not sushi experts, are huge sushi fans. We recently tried Yama Sushi for a quick lunch, and later returned for dinner, both times sitting at the boat bar. The cost for our lunch for two, no drinks, and including tip was $30. Our dinner for two, with 3 hot sakes, dessert, and including tip was $50. For comparison - we usually can't get dinner from other sushi places for under $100! While Yama Sushi is NOT 5-star sushi by any means, the service, prices, and atmosphere definitely make this a place worth frequenting. I can't stress enough: go during peak lunch and dinner hours to guarantee a rapid turnover of the boat items! This is true of any sushi boat bar. And if you don't see what you want floating by, make a direct request to one of the sushi chefs and you can have most anything prepared fresh and served to you. Some recommendations: start with a seaweed salad - one of the best I've tasted. And be sure to request a freshly made Honey Shrimp -try not to be too alarmed by the neon orange sauce color. It comes hot with plenty of sauce leftover to use as dipping sauce for other items. Avoid the green tea ice cream - in my opinion a little too much green tea flavor with none of the rich ice cream flavor to balance it out. Kampai! read more
