This place is insane!! With my parents living in Houston, I often crave good Cajun/Creole food and I can't believe I haven't found this place until now!! The food is incredibly cheap and absolutely delicious. The service is so quick and so friendly. The person taking our order let us sample the different dishes we wanted to try to make sure we actually liked the food. There are also vegan/vegetarian options so that's a bonus! The half and half is only $8 and the amount of food you get is ridiculous! We ended up getting a half portion of jambalaya and a half & half of crawfish etoufee and drunken chicken with extra bread. The jambalaya, etoufee, and drunken chicken were so flavorful and the two latter ones are served on a bed of rice. The bread is AMAZING - they use a spiced butter and it's unbelievable. A lot of the reviews say it's cash only but they accepted card when I went so perhaps they've updated their system! I will definitely be back! read more

Gosh, it really doesn't get much better. The people working are always insanely nice and conversational. I LOVE everything here, never had anything bad. My go-to's are Chili Cheese Etouffee, Chorizo Chicken, and the Drunken Chicken. They are all so good! You know how they say you don't know what you've got til it's gone? Yeah, that's what came to mind each time that I craved Cajun food during the last five months. While being in Europe exposed me to culinary experiences beyond my wildest dreams, I'm convinced that you need to be in one of two places to enjoy the best Cajun food: either Louisiana or Yats in Indy. Needless to say, Yats was on the top of my list of restaurants to visit after arriving home to the States. As a Butler student I feel an obligation to frequent Yats on College. It's a student's dream: hearty food that will keep you full all day, a casual environment in a central location perfect for catching up with friends, and of course incredibly low prices that in no way correlate with the quality and quantity of food you get. A full plate of steaming NOLA cuisine over rice AND two pieces of Cajun bread? Well I'm not quite sure what college students did to deserve this! While the pick two deal is great, I can't get enough of the Mushroom Spinach Etouffee so I typically keep it simple opt for a full portion. If I want to mix it up, the Chili Cheese is great especially if you like crawfish and the Drunk Chicken is a classic. If you're not quite sure which dish suits your fancy, the staff at Yats is always happy to give free samples of any of the dishes on the board, just ask! That leads me to the final reason that I love Yats just oh so much--the people! I've never walked into Yats and not felt immediately welcome. It's not uncommon for the guys at the register to remember the names of strike up a conversation with visitors. It's truly a local gem in Indy, great for takeout, group dinners, or a cheap meal that isn't fast food. read more

I completed the impossible task tonight: I got my Yats takeout home without it spilling some or all of its goodness into the bag! But even when it does spill, I'm not ashamed to say I've scraped it from the bag. Everything I've had from Yats is just so delicious. One of my favorite parts of ordering is that you can get 1/2 an order of two dishes, thus maximizing your ordering potential. I generally do 1/2 a dish with meat and 1/2 of a vegetarian option. Some of my faves are B&B (a slightly sweet black bean and corn creation), Drunk Chicken (chicken with a slightly spicy sauce), and the Chili Cheese Ettouffe. Best of all, all the portions are generous and are served with a genuine smile and a nice hunk of bread. The food is simple, but the recipes are honed to perfection. The meals are Cajun and creole pot-style meals served over white rice. Don't leave out the cookie or peanut butter pie desserts. Get a quart to go. Get two quarts to go. We blew in to Yat's hungry after a couple of hours on the road and on the heels of a busy museum day at TCM. WOW! The food was fast, unique, and INCREDIBLE! BF went for the Half & Half Chili Cheese Etouffe and B&B; I just did a Half ChIli Cheese Etouffe. Both of us ordered extra bread (he was wise to how good it is). For fifteen bucks, we had an incredible feast! The sauce for the Etouffe is creamy, flavorful, and a little bit spicy (nothing crazy). The B&B is sweet corn and beans, which didn't sound interesting to me but which was outstanding when I tried it! Both dishes were unique and surprised me with their flavor profiles! The bread was drowned in butter and I wanted to marry it. This is now our stop for long road trips northward forever after! read more

I was a loyal customer of this location until today. I attempted to place an order online three times, and they were declined each time. I called after each instance to find out what was going on. After the third time, I called and was greeted with extreme hostility. I asked if I could then place an order through the phone. The person on the other end refused to allow me to do so. I hung up, tried again and was greeted by the same extremely rude person. I asked again how I could order (how do people that don't have internet order ahead?) The person on the other end quite literally told me to f-off and hung up on me. I called back several times and tried to resolve the situation, but the person kept repeating the same expletive and hanging up on me. I asked if I could speak to his boss, and he refused to allow me to do so. Yats- please do something about this so-called "manager" and treat your loyal, paying customers better. read more

This is my favorite indulgence in Indy. Extra bread is a MUST! My go-to is the Chili Cheese Etoufeé with a dollop of sour cream on top. The service is incredibly fast and I take it to go or eat in the Big Easy-inspired location in turn. Parking is limited out front but plentiful in the neighborhood and I usually stake out my spot across the street. I emailed this restaurant to ask which location was closest to the hotel I am staying at in Indy on vacation this weekend. Someone wrote me back, I think perhaps the owner, verey rudely telling me that, based on the hotel I am staying at, he "did not think the restaurant would be for me". He then went on to say that do not serve alcohol (I guess he assumes that I am a drunk, and ironically, I rarely drink), and it is a quick service place. really, that is what I was looking for, but the owner apparently does not want us there. The email was rude and judgmental, and I could not believe a business owner would not welcome ANYONE into their place based on where they stay for the night. Loved Yats! The totally tatted-up, hipster-type guy working the counter couldn't have been more patient with my mom and me as we hemmed and hawed over what fabulous dishes to get for our to-go order. We ended up getting the Drunken Chicken, Chili étouffée with Crawfish, Spinach and Mushroom Étouffée, and Creole Chicken. (Clearly she, my dad and I were planning on eating nothing but Yats for the entirety of my parents' visit). Everything was phenomenal. I really couldn't pick a favorite... Except maybe the chili étouffée. Or the Drunken Chicken. Or everything else, really. All that deliciousness, together with the approximately eight loaves of bread the nice Yats man gave to us (because he probably thought we we were catering a wedding or retirement party), made for a couple of awesome meals while my folks were in town... Plus they freeze beautifully, so I've been able to continue laissez-ing les bons temps rouler during the work week with just a few zaps of the microwave. The only negative us that all the leftovers mean that it'll be a while before my next trip to Yats!! read more
