This is one of my favorite places in Indiana to eat. I almost exclusively choose to the half and half entree and I rotate between the Jambalaya, drunken chicken, chili cheese etoufee with crawfish, and Maque Choux. Each dish is delicious in their own and to add the buttery garlic bread just makes everything richer. Only come here if you're hungry and make sure you're not going to have a large meal at dinner because the food is so rich you'll be full all day long... super filling. read more

This place is good eats. The positives have been mentioned (chili cheese etouffee, low price, quick service, etc.) This location definitely does not have the atmosphere, but I don't see any difference in the food quality. What keeps Yats from being a 5 star for me is their limited menu choices and that I've been in a few times where they've run out of stuff. My parents love Yats. But somehow I never was able to be convinced to go with them or on a solo venture. Until one night my parents brought me dinner and I didn't know where it was from due to the undifferentiated styrofoam container. They said it was white chicken chili and I asked no questions and just ate. And ate. I finished all of that chili. My parents were raving about the garlic bread saying it's why they always go there... And that was just meh. Yay, I'm a fan. Finally got around to eating at a Yats. Due to all the people raving about it, I had to have the Chili Cheese etouffee with crawfish. Yes, it is all that. My friend had the Hunter's Stew, with sausage and pulled pork. He liked it. Cleaner than I expected. Separate men's and ladie's restrooms. Men's room was cleaner than I expected given the high traffic. After running errands, we went back and got take-out to take back to his wife. She liked it too. Lots of cute 20-something ladies seem to patronize this place. It's trendy. But good quality and good friendly service. The entree's are basically a stew, served over rice, with some bread. Limited menu. The Chili Cheese Etouffee with crawfish is served every day, and the other items rotate. Stews keep most of the day, so they serve it up fast. They bring it out to your table if you eat in and if they are not swamped. Posted price of $5.75 per entree includes tax. Self-serve soda fountain, iced tea, plus bottled water and bottled drinks. If the basic stew entrees are not spicey enough for you, they have a variety of hot sauces (about 10) available to add. read more

Being a former Indy resident I always try and make a point to stop at Yatz. Its such a nice change from the basic midwest food options. Dishes are hot, filling and packed with flavor. The price is on point for quantity and quality of this food. Try the Drunken Chicken and although only made a couple times a year the Ropa Vieja is a must. I eat at Yats often, today I tried something new, red beans and sausage, the beans were extremely dried out and I only got 1 partial piece of sausage. The cook had long hair and kept playing with it over the food, not appetizing. The bread cuts and butter spreads were very inconsistent and one even had a burnt end. Props to their newly updated website though. I made the mistake of going to yats again. Ordered half n half but was more like 90/10. Plus it was mostly rice. I tried a half and half plate of something chickeny and something else beany, but both of them looked like different kinds of yellow curry, and tasted like they are full of delicious, fattening goodness. I love Yats! Of course the College location has a better atmosphere, but the food, the price and the service speak for themselves. I have never had a bad experience here. Addicting! Be prepared to crave their food after you go! I can't get enough Yats. This is a hot sauce junkies paradise. They have about a dozen to choose from. My staples are Chili Cheese Etouffee w/ Crawfish and White Chix Chili. My fave not so frequent dishes are the Black Chili and Caribbean Jerk Chicken. And their bread is delicious! I love their veggie options. Staff is friendly, food is always amazing. Love the stickers on the tv and the ice dispenser. My entire family loves to eat here. Always a favorite and the price is right. My only gripe is that some locations offer large portions while others places offer relatively small ones. Depending on who is serving the plates up this could be a great deal or just a decent one. Also, sometimes you do not get the bread that is supposed to come with each order and they offer no vegan desserts. First off, let me say I am fearful of spicy anything. You can say from here to high heaven that it ain't spicy, but it'll burn my mouth til I'm breathing fire back at you. Yats accommodated my ridiculous tongue though! They let me try small portions of a few dishes, have great recommendations, and even though it's all still spicy (to me and me alone) it's also DELICIOUS. I had the red beans and sausage, my bf the drunken chicken, and my dad the chili cheese something or other with shrimp and they were all great. Plus the bread is to die for. I used to Love Yats! I ordered both the Red Beans and Sausage and Drunken Chicken dishes. Sadly, both meals were a complete disappointment. For the money, I expected to get several chunks of sausage and chicken in each dish purchased. Unfortunately, I only got one small bitesize piece of meat in each meal. We were only in Indy for one night & decided to have dinner here since our hotel was very close-by. Since we both did the half & half options we were able to try 4 different entrees between us. Yats is a lot of fun. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and fast service with delicious food. I recommend the Chicken Maque Choix and the Drunken Chicken. If you're a vegetarian they have great options too, I'd recommend the B&B which is a delicious dish full of black beans and corn in a flavorful sauce. Everything has plenty of flavor here but if you like it spicy I'd recommend adding some hot sauce from their generous hot sauce bar. The Cajun power garlic sauce is perfect for me, tons of flavor and a little kick while still not being painfully spicy. I live closer to the 96th street location, but discovered this restaurant in my teens by visiting the original broad ripple location. If you've got the time I'd go there, it's a cooler spot ambiance wise and they still serve their food on actual dishes instead of the styrofoam plates that are used at the subsequent locations. Not a huge deal but the original broad ripple location using real plates also results in a slightly larger portion as well. Same great flavors at all locations though. Keep in mind the menu rotates and you can check what's available on their website to avoid surprises! read more

Me and my friends have been going to this joint since the beginning of our semester. This place started out so good but lately has really gone down hill. The other day we waited 5 whole minutes for our food. We still come of course just because we love the food and love one employee named Pat. There's also an employee named Bob! He's super sweet and looks like pirate of the Caribbean version of Johnny Depp. The service used to be so friendly and speedy, and now it's slow and we feel so awkward. We used to get free extra bread with our food and now we have to pay as if we are peasants. There is also a guy that works in the back with a long beard. He wears jorts.
