Yats is a lot of fun. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and fast service with delicious food. I recommend the Chicken Maque Choix and the Drunken Chicken. If you're a vegetarian they have great options too, I'd recommend the B&B which is a delicious dish full of black beans and corn in a flavorful sauce. Everything has plenty of flavor here but if you like it spicy I'd recommend adding some hot sauce from their generous hot sauce bar. The Cajun power garlic sauce is perfect for me, tons of flavor and a little kick while still not being painfully spicy. I live closer to the 96th street location, but discovered this restaurant in my teens by visiting the original broad ripple location. If you've got the time I'd go there, it's a cooler spot ambiance wise and they still serve their food on actual dishes instead of the styrofoam plates that are used at the subsequent locations. Not a huge deal but the original broad ripple location using real plates also results in a slightly larger portion as well. Same great flavors at all locations though. Keep in mind the menu rotates and you can check what's available on their website to avoid surprises! read more

There is nothing new i can say about this place that has not already been said. yats is an indy institution in my opinion. Having tried almost all their dishes and offerings i can say that they know what they doing to entice your taste buds. From the maque choux to jambalaya and everything in between in tasty. At these prices it is also a very reasonable place to eat for great taste and super fast service. My co-workers and i have almost unanimously voted to eat here multiple times for office lunches. When i have had friends from other places try it, most have fallen in love with it and asked to be taken back. I have been to new orleans and i realized that yats has truly perfected the art of making cajun food and is better than most places i had been to over there. overall, this neighborhood hole in the wall has now become a roaring chain in indy but its good to see that the quality has remained the same, though the portion size seems to keep going down on a consistent 3 month basis. This location is a little less decorated and slightly smaller...who cares!? The food is great and the service is fast and accurate. If you're looking for expensive, snooty Cajun food, you've got the wrong place. If you like good food and service to match, this location is as good as any. The B&B rocks my socks. It's pretty much what I get every single time I go. If you're like me and feel like you don't need a full portion or a split portion of two kinds, you can ask for a HALF portion. Trust me, just ask. It's great. I love a place that offers more than one vegetarian option! This location consistently offers three. Yesterday I got down on the B&B and the succotash-auhmazing! The piles of deliciousness on your plate don't always look appetizing, but once you down a mouthful, does it really matter? Prices here can't be beat. The 1/2 and 1/2 with two juicy pieces of bread is only around $7.50. A friendly and helpful fella took my order and he was all smiles, which I appreciate. Compared to another cajun joint I sometimes go to, I find Yats to have a better vegetarian selection, which is a pretty important aspect to me, and the food tastes better. Whatever kind of buttery spread they put on the bread is damn delightful! I don't know why I don't eat here more often come to think of it. read more

It's hard to beat the price of their food and the level of quality. It's flavorful, they offer vegetarian options, the butter on their bread is oh so naughty, and unlike the Broadripple location, they accept plastic. If you are splurging, I suggest the etouffee. First time eating at a Yats. Loved it and would recommend if you like a Cajun and Creole food. Staff is very friendly. My food was ready by the time my card (with a chip) was approved and was given my cup for my drink. Got the Drunken Chicken. Delicious with a very slight kick to it. If you don't love Yats, you basically don't love freedom. Cajun/creole isn't the prettiest-looking food in the world, but you don't eat with your eyes. The B&B is sweet and a little spicy - a perfect vegetarian dish that does well when you scoop it up with a fat piece of bread and eat it in one bite. If you love it - and there's a good chance you will - you'll look for a recipe to make it at home. You will find one after some searching, you will attempt it, and you will fail. Oh, it will be tasty, but it will only be an essence of what was. You will continue to chase the dragon and try to make it perfectly at home until you give up and actually return to Yats and eat theirs. It's okay, you won't mind. My sole complaint is that the vegan chili was bowel-churningly spicy. If you like that kind of thing, by all means, but I didn't expect it to be so hot. The portions are generous and the price is right. Love Yats, or hate yourself. There is no other choice. read more

So I love the college avenue location, because they've kept *almost* everything the same over the years. I get why they've raised their price, and I'm okay with it. Their portion sizes are perfect and I love how they keep using their ceramic plates. I've got no problems with that location. The one on 96th St is a different story, similar to the rest of the locations beside College Ave. The portion sizes are too small, the prices went up, and there is waaaay too much grease on the bread. I also don't like how they've started charging for half and half, or to add sour cream and onion and cheese. I'm disappointed with the franchises choices and I thought I should share. Still can't resist my urges to come here, though. read more

Love this place. If you're reading this review, I'm going to assume you don't live in Indianapolis, or just don't get out much. Anyone who's lived in the Indy area has probably heard of this place, the College Ave. location is legendary and simply amazed me the first time I had it years ago. I'm usually not one to travel far for a quick meal, and I was so glad to see another one opened by my house, a few minutes away. Anyways, delicious creole/cajun style food for super cheap prices. The menu slightly varies day to day depending on what they make that morning, apparently. If your favorite dish is sold out, better come on another day (or try something else, the entire menu is amazing!). Not to mention the bread is pretty much perfect. I always order extra with my meal (for only $0.50!). My favorite dish on the menu is the B&B, it's on their vegetarian menu and slightly sweeter than the other dishes they offer. Gotta love Yats. Easy, cheap, fast, hot and delicious. This is no where to take a date, more of a quick lunch type place. Very casual inside, some hokey New Orleans themed declarations and articles from local newspapers on the walls. I don't go to a restaurant for decor tho, I go for food. I usually get the spinach and mushroom etouffee or the drunken chicken. Portions are large and filling. My only critique is that they serve everything on styrofoam. Not exactly the most environmentally friendly option. Surely there's a sturdy, recyclable paper option? Other than that, can't go wrong :) read more

I had 1/2 order of Chilli Cheese Crayfish Etoufee and 1/2 order of the Red Beans and Sausage over Rice. To put it simply the best I ever had. Add to that the toasted french bread and one enjoyable meal. Also definitely try their Creme Soda and your in heaven. And all for less than $12.00. I was really pleasently surprised. We eat at Yats at least once a month. A few of our favorites are the B and B, the Maque Choux, and Red Beans and Sausage. They have a new item called Black Chili with Chorizo which is AMAZING! But really, put Chorizo in anything and I will call it amazing! The staff at this location are laid back and friendly. The store itself is not huge so it can get crowded during lunch or dinnertime. This is my favorite place to eat in the whole wide world! I miss it deeply now that I live in Virginia. I always get the white chicken chili with the orange soda and extra bread.
