I came here with a few friends and got the veggie fried rice. Not only was I the last one in my group to get served, but the fried rice tasted absolutely bland. I understand that I ordered veggie fried rice, and visually the dish was appealing, but could you have at least made the fried rice more appealing to my taste buds? Maybe sprinkle some salt. When I cook fried rice at home, I have learned that adding soy sauce is not enough to flavor the dish. Maybe the cook didn't know that, or forgot to add some salt, but that's points off for carelessness. read more

I totally disagree and confused with the negative rating below by that dude Joseph T after several attempts to this restaurant. What are primary qualities to look for when you first approach into an unrecognizable restaurant? Cleanliness environment, family friendliness atmosphere and the service went above and beyond my expectations to make sure customer were taken care of. The owner interacted with all customers and employees as if we were all lifelong friends. I know everyone has their own tastes when it come foods. This place is great! It's an inexpensive, all entre are delicious, especially if you love clean Pho (noodles) without MSG. About the egg rolls, Joseph (dude) you are not freaking straight Vietnamese. Stop embarrassing yourself and making bad judgments on other people. YaYa traditional egg rolls has tiny clear noodles, soft vegetables (kind of vegi doesn't smell even when you keep in the freezer for extra amounts of time) and the tenderness of meats totally different comparing to other common places in Houston where has the most Asians people. I'm glad there is a Vietnamese (Fried rice on a menu does not make your restaurant "Chinese" ok?) restaurant near my apartment. It makes being homesick a little more bearable. The service was pretty nice when I went (although we had a REALLY apathetic college kid and he didn't give us anything but a fork to eat our YaYa chicken wings with), you can tell they are trying to make their restaurant enjoyable for all. Well, some of them. I did overhear a worker act a little incredulous when a woman ordered another helping of YaYa chicken wings. Hey, they were good! I don't blame her. Their Pho doesn't contain a lot, so you might want to skip it if you are feeling particularly ravished. Their Vermicelli was delicious though, enough to leave me feeling stuffed halfway through. I had enough to share with my boyfriend (who had the pho). We topped it off with some shaved ice with mango and green tea ice cream. My only advice with regards to the shaved ice is: (a) use the restroom before you leave unless you want to run back home doing the pee dance and, (b) pick fruits that are in season because they use fresh fresh fruit and if you pick one in season it makes it 10x better. read more

Living in Hyde Park, I was very thankful when YaYa Cafe opened up and I could get decent Vietnamese food that was nearby and with parking. They serve some very good pho and vermicelli dishes. The service is good and the people are friendly. The place is very clean. The shaved ice is yummy but the small could serve like five people. This has become one of my default places to get take-out when I'm too tired or lazy to cook. read more

Randomly stopped here for some coffee after getting stuck in grueling traffic on our way to Austin...what a happy surprise! The menu looked so good we ended up splitting some wonton soup and a bahn mi on top of the Vietnamese coffee. The food came out quick and was delicious. The host was so warm and friendly. I came here several weeks ago looking for a pho fix, they did not disappoint. I ordered the brisket pho and it was a solid dish with a good broth and a good ratio of actual meat to fat. I have returned several times for their Vietnamese barbecue sandwiches which are very affordable at ~$5 and provide a tasty and convenient meal if you need a quick lunch In contrast with many reviewers here, I found the service to be very attentive. My glass of water has never been more than half empty when I have dined in, and the staff was very personable. I ended up talking at length to one of the cashiers who is part of the family that opened the place and we had a good time talking about Vietnamese food meccas in various parts of California (San Jose, Westminster etc.) I left out the final star because the food is not extraordinary. You will get a good meal but it won't be the best Vietnamese food you've ever had either. read more

This place has the BEST vegan Pho in town! Everytime I go there, the basil, bean sprouts, and jalapenos are so fresh. What a sad, sad place. Came here because I was craving pho and didn't want to drive more than 5 minutes. Ordered the brisket and rare steak one and it came out pretty quickly. The broth was extremely salty, as if someone had dumped an entire can of Morton in the bowl. In addition, I was told by my waiter that they can't bring the check to the table and I have to go up front to pay. Ok, fine. I get up there and the lady charges me $9 for a normal-sized bowl of pho. She only told me that I was charged for a LARGE order after I paid/asked. The waiter never even asked me which size I wanted, nor did I specify a size/was even aware that the pho came in Standard and Large (must have overlooked it on the menu). Is this seriously how they handle customers? After I pointed this out to the lady at the counter, all I got was a bland "sorry". The manager also didn't say anything. Oh, and they advertise Wi-Fi at the place but it kept kicking me off every other minute so that was a bust. Overall, this place is run by dishonest people looking to take advantage of first time customers and serve them sub-standard food. This place is the Applebee's of asian cuisine. Came for the bahn mi, wasn't impressed. Scant meat and veggies, no mayo, unmemorable bread. Overpriced. Totally meh. Ordered some shrimp spring rolls, they were fresh and tasty. The guy at the table across from me ordered a large bowl of pho and ate it so incredibly fast I literally couldn't help but stare. I mean it was gone in less then 5 minutes. Like speed eating style, just shoveling it in his face hole. Maybe the pho is better then the sammies? Not terrible food, just nothing I would return for or recommend to anyone. I was slightly hungover and in a poor mood but when I first slipped my coffee, I smiled immediately. Hands down one of the best things that has touched my tongue. I've been to Yaya's twice now I haven't had a bad experience but their food is okay. I really like their BBQ Pork Banh Mi, the meat was flavorful and the baguette nice and warm. Since moving into the neighborhood in August, we have eaten @ Yaya's a handful of times. The Pho is pretty legit. My husband & I have had good experience with the kind staff as well. This is my third time here so I felt like I had to finally leave a review. This place is my FAVORITE! Best pho I've had in Austin. The atmosphere and service is always great. The owner and his wife (I assume) are always here making everything from scratch. We usually order the wings for an appetizer but he said they have to marinate for 5 hours. (I didn't argue with that! I've eaten here twice and so far so good. First was rice and lemongrass chicken, next was pho and spring rolls both time. Everything was solid (though not stellar). There were a lot fewer choices of meat for the pho than in most Vietnamese restaurants I've eaten at and fewer garnishes as well (basically sprouts, basil, lime & jalapenos). As some others have noted, the broth seemed too light in color. But overall, it was still pretty decent. Service was a bit lacking (seemed like they were a bit short staffed), but friendly. Price-wise it's high compared to other Vietnamese in town (about 50% higher than where I normally go for what I got). But, in this part of town, I'd expect higher prices. Overall, it's pretty OK if you live nearby and don't want to drive up north, but I wouldn't make a special trip. read more

The lemongrass pork at this place is amazing. I get it in Bahn Mi sandwiches, with rice or with noodles. I like it so much that I haven't gotten around to trying the Pho. The only bad thing I could say is that the portion is a little light on meat. The rice/noodle dinners do come with really fresh greens. My wife says the portions are balanced and that I should eat meals that look like theirs'. I eat like an American though so I always order extra meat for $1.50 and then I'm happy. read more
