This review is only for breakfast at Yolan while staying at The Joseph. I ordered the Eggs in Purgatory since it was presented as one of their specialties, and honestly, it was terrible. Shockingly bland with almost no flavor whatsoever. I'm not someone who sends food back, but this was only about the fourth time in my life where I genuinely said I hated a dish and couldn't finish it. My wife's breakfast sandwich was definitely better -- still pretty mid overall, but at least flavorful enough to enjoy. Ironically, the potatoes were probably the most seasoned thing we had. Possibly the best service I've had at a restaurant ever. From the hostess who was incredibly friendly and gave us lots of Nashville tips to our waiter who helped me find a wine I liked, to the auxillary staff who filled waters and delivered food. Absolutely wonderful folks in this restaurant! The food was also very good. I ordered the filet and my husband had the lamb and some olives. Came here for dinner on the night I arrived in Nashville for my Christmas road trip. I don't usually go for Italian, but this place caught my attention with a tasting menu, had a tower of canapés as one of the courses, and showcased Italian cooking in more ways that just pasta. Located just off the lobby of a beautiful hotel, just passed the giant gingerbread house, the ambiance was luxury. Dark seating soft illuminated by incredibly high ceilings and a glass wine cellar area that really made the joint feel classy, but not snooty, if that makes sense. Service was exquisite. Very nice server who was all over our ever need. The courses came out very well-timed, our glasses were never empty, and the explanation of each course was good. They're not always good when it comes to restaurants who don't only do tasting menus. Very good service. As for the food, we got the Esperienza Yolan Tasting Menu. The tasting menu they have right now is different than what we had, which is a great sign. Menus that change with the seasons show passion and attention to detail, I think. So I won't do into detail about what I ate, but I will say that the portion sizes were perfect, the pasta we did encounter was entirely unique in its flavor, the meat we ate was cooked perfectly, and the desserts were elegant and had the perfect sweetness. This was a highlight of a trip to Nashville. The place is kind of hidden in the Joseph with a nice ambiance. You are immediately greeted by the hostess and taken to your seat where they ask your water preference, a sign of a great meal to come. The menu has plenty of options and they have a wonderful tasting menu that I wish I would have done. I chose not too because they didn't have the one dish I really wanted on it, but I probably should have done it for the value. Anyways what I did have was amazing! I started off with the pappardelle which was super flavorful with the perfect à la dente noodles. I basically licked the spoon clean and would have eaten a second portion if I knew how amazing it was going to be. I then had the merluzzo Nero which was good but honestly should have just gotten a second pasta. The celery root slaw was a little off to me, but the cod was cooked well and the star though was the sauce. I'm glad I tried an entree but I should have just gotten 2 pastas and called it a day like I normally do at a place like this. But this place was pretty awesome but a little expensive. It's going to be a place that I put on the list for a nice occasion not just a random dinner spot which stinks because I'm not from Nashville and don't do a lot of nice occasion dinners. Don't get me wrong when I went this week it hit the spot and I don't really have any regrets, but it was 100+ meal for me who is also a non-drinker. Yolan is an absolute gem in Nashville. From the moment we sat down, everything felt thoughtful, elevated, and genuinely delicious. Yolan had been on my list of places to try for so long and while I liked it, I didn't absolutely adore it. Finding the entrance was iffy and I had to circle the block a few times for it (this could just be a me problem) and the space wasn't as intimate as I'd imagined. The small plates were fantastic. We got the whipped cheese and focaccia and loved it. The menu was very cream heavy so be prepared to fill up fast. There are several vegetarian friendly options but because of the cream, definitely not much for a vegan. The cocktail menu was small, but the wine menu was extensive. Food is five stars. The experience was not. We went to Yolan for my wife's birthday and ordered the tasting menu. I want to be very clear up front that the food is incredible. Every course was beautifully executed, creative, and genuinely delicious. From a purely culinary standpoint, Yolan absolutely delivers. That said, at this price point, the entire experience matters just as much as the food, and this is where the night fell short for us. From the beginning, things felt a bit disjointed. Our original reservation had already been moved to a different night due to a private event, which we understood, but I did expect the experience on the new date to feel a little more thoughtful as a result. Instead, we were told there would be a short wait for our table, offered bar seating, then placed at a small side table near the bar that felt more like an afterthought than a destination. Throughout the evening, the staff seemed overwhelmed and stressed. Our server was kind but clearly juggling too much. A few drinks were mixed up, some things were forgotten, and at one point I had to track down a manager just to get silverware. When we stepped away briefly to take a photo, our table was completely cleared, which was surprising mid meal. I want to be clear that I do not fault our server personally. In fact, she did not charge us for a few drinks, which felt like an acknowledgment that things had not gone smoothly. Still, at this level, guests should not feel like they are part of the problem. Even small moments added to that feeling. When retrieving our coats at the end of the night, the interaction felt rushed and oddly irritated, rather than warm or reflective of a special evening out. Lastly, while this is subjective, the ambiance did not match the caliber of the food. Compared to other high end restaurants in Nashville, the decor felt dated and mismatched, more like a luxury hotel lobby than a modern destination restaurant. It did not detract from the food, but it did not elevate the experience either. Would I return? Yes, because the food really is that good. Would I hope for a smoother, more thoughtful service experience next time? Absolutely. Yolan has incredible culinary talent. They were okay, different, but not special (3*). I also had the arugula salad with cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper) dressing. It was ample, fresh, and tasty (4*). For my main course, I ordered the gnocchi with white (winter) truffles. The chef comes over and delivers your dish, then he very dramatically holds the white truffle and shaver and begins to shower your dish with truffle shavings. The smell of truffles gently wafts toward you as it is shaved and hits the hot sauce warming them slightly. Very theatrical and fun. It was creamy, light, yet rich (5*). I actually asked for some bread to sop up the remaining sauce (fare la scarpetta - mop up with sauce). Service Hit and miss. Our server either had too many tables or was new. But the manager kept having to come over to take care of us due to the servers absence. I ordered white wine and it took 20 minutes for it to arrive. The refill took another 30 minutes. Meh on the service. Ambiance Located in a hotel on the first floor. Dark, relatively noisy due to the open nature of the dining room and proximity to the bar. The casual atmosphere was enjoyable, but also felt a little stodgy at times. Not bad, just seemed misplaced. All in all a good meal. I would find other restaurants next time rather than repeat here. Wow. This place is absolutely amazing. The food is northern Italian and cooked beautifully. Tried to pasta with cacio e Pepe and they absolutely got it right. First impressions, not an impressive dining area - very loud, cold, lacking an upscale elegance. The kitchen is the focal feature. The Arancini al Ragu was a delightful starter. It was lightly fried and was one of the highlights of the meal. Skip the "signature" truffle gnocchi dish. The Parmesan cheese flavor overpowers the delicate flavor of the truffles. Having said that, it's a shining star compared to the Bucatini All'Amatriana. This pasta dish is far too sweet and lacks a depth of flavor. The Risotto Alla Milanese was a lighter dish. The saffron does not compete with the wonderful flavor of the lobster and as for the saffron, one would hardly notice its presence. Farmer Dave Potatoes were a nice side. I cannot comment on the veal chop because our waitress forgot to bring it out and apologized profusely. I wish some of the apps here a bit more elevated like the pizza and salad. The pizza was good but literally a personal pizza and the burrata salad was very hard to cut when meeting with a client. The bread was delicious! My client split the veal which was massive! Great size and I heard it was good! I was the only one who got the lamb and it was really oily/buttery and made me sick. The food, ambience and service is good but not worth it's prices. The place is definitely overpriced by the stds of a highend restaurant, for example- We had to wait for 15 mins in spite of having reservations, they missed getting one of the snack dishes we had ordered (did take it off the bill later). The food quality and taste was very good though and the cocktails were also very well made and balanced. The lamp entree especially was a thoughtfully made dish. The desert was tasty but lacked to surprise or intrigue me. Again, I have much higher expectations of service and creativity from such high end restaurants. We stayed at The Joseph and since Yolan is right inside, we had to try it out. I've been seeing a lot of high ratings for it, so I was excited. The restaurant is right off the lobby out in the open area, which I did find odd. It was loud, but we could still have a conversation. Our server was fantastic, giving us recommendations that were spot on, and she was able to have the bartender make me delicious cocktails. The food was outstanding. We ordered A LOT because I had trouble deciding and I assumed the portions would be small. Well, we walked out ready to burst from so much food. We started with focaccia with the whipped ricotta - bread was warm and soft with a nice crunch exterior- the ricotta was extremely creamy and flavorful. We had the fried olives which were surprisingly delicious. They gave us a free appetizer of two small ricotta fritters bites. Amazing. We then had the Stracciatella which was a spreadable white cheese topped with sunchokes and pomegranate seeds with olive oil crackers. It was complex and very tasty. We then tried the gnocchi - the softest and most delicate I've ever had. The cream sauce was perfect. We then had the steak which was cooked perfectly medium and the mashed potatoes were also the smoothest I've ever had. This was my favorite dining experience in Nashville. Perhaps so far ever. Everything was perfect! There were eight of us total. We started with a couple of orders of fried olives and foccacia bread, one with the whipped ricotta with garlic honey and the other with andjul (if I remember correctly). Both were amazing! My cousin and I could not decide because everything sounded so delicious, so we decided to share. We got an order of the Gnocchi with truffles, the Squid ink pasta with octopus, and the strip steak with whipped potatoes and wild mushrooms. The Gnocchi was, by far, the best I have ever had in my life. It was absolutely delicious! The steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly. It was the first time I've had truffles, and I loved them. High expectations coming here and sort of a let down to be honest. It's in the hall of a hotel downtown and everyone who works there seemed incredibly pretentious, make it make sense. They were kind and we never had to wait for a water refill but it felt stuffy. We started with the mercato which was pretty good. I had the gnocchi and my mom had the risotto, they were both ok. The last time I visited Nashville this was one of my favorite spots so I wanted to take my husband. I was dissapointed to have a few snags with my initial reservation but after rearranging things, we made it work. Our waitress tried hard but forgot my husband's drink and I think got our entrees confused with another table. She also asked if we were celebrating (we were- a birthday) and that was never mentioned again. Another waitress was abrupt with us -she definitely did not want to engage. For food: I got a glass of reserve Sav Blanc and really enjoyed it. Our apps were meh. The straciatella didn't have much flavor or substance. It was mostly shaved celery. The octopus was bad. There is no other way to say it: it was chewy and tasted burned. For the 3 inch piece we got, $30 was way too much to pay. We got the cacio e pepe and risotto - both were amazing. Loved the saffron risotto and I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was. Ordering risotto is not something I do everywhere because I get mad when I'm served a congealed mass of gluey rice. But this was creamy - just the way it should be. So, I'd say if you go, stick to primi and secondi, maybe get the bread plate. But even the pastas we had weren't enough for me to keep my 5 star rating because the service was really lacking and the apps made me feel robbed. read more
