They have a clever menu with lots of yummy stuff - from a fresh fruit cup with honey and mint to very tasty lemon truffle homefries. Lots of options for anyone. Between all the hustle and bustle, we managed to get seated after waiting 20-30 minutes for a table but boy, can I say it was definitely worth the wait! Four of us ordered the egg benedict (different variations of course) and the fifth ordered the pancakes. I really liked the option of getting the traditional hollandaise sauce or white cheddar. Came to Yolk's on a Thursday morning, not expecting a crowd. However, the restaurant was quite full, which is usually a promising sign. After quickly being seated by one of the staff, I noticed that the restaurant was very hot with little air circulation and there were fruit flies constantly by the table. I ordered the pancakes with the caramel and nut topping and a side of 2 poached eggs, and a friend ordered two poached eggs with the Canadian bacon, hollandaise, and a side of the truffled potatoes. We also got a chocolate milk-the best I've ever had as it is made in house. The food took a little bit longer than average to arrive (30 minutes). Yeah, Yolks in in East Van, it's a transitional part of town that will most likely soon be full of the kind of people who give it a bad review because of how it looks. But how it looks is Not how it cooks. For me, the decor just a bonus, I love dive spots. It's really more about the food and the food is JUST breakfast. Keep it simple. And don't ask for scrambled eggs, they won't make them for you. But what they do make, is delicious. As a fan of the waffle, I always start there if available. Their waffle is elegant and fantastic, just the right crunch with that comfort food hug that only the best waffles evoke. Real maple syrup (it is Canada after all) and just enough butter to make it all fit together. I'm also not usually a potato eater, but Yolk's hash browns are once again, too good to pass up. Don't forget the Tapatio sauce, brought to you in a quart bottle! The food presentation tells me that the cook went to chef school, and let's face it, presentation is everything, even (especially?) in a dive spot. The menu is short, barely one page, but contains some high end tastes, duck confit eggs Benedict with lemon truffle hash browns to name one. It's also the first time I've seen chicken and waffles that would rival Roscoe's best. Has that taste treat finally crossed the 49th parallel? Fat is Flavah. The pricing is not particularly in step with the locale, at least at this point in time, but you get what you pay for so expect to spend $10-20 per person. I have never had a problem with lines here, but I live around the corner so it's easy to come at a time before the lines start. Sometime after 10am I've been told it gets busy, and busy restaurants don't always provide the best service. Personally, the service I've had at Yolk's has always been great. As for a recommendation, well it all depends on what you're looking for. If you like divey spots run by like minded folks who know how to cook, then Come On Down, but if a low ceiling or crappy carpeting throw you off your game, then maybe Yolk's isn't the place for you. FLASHBACK - The last time I remember coming into this restaurant it was a decades old steak house that always seemed oddly empty and somewhat dangerous, like there was some evil plot being hatched by all the old guys at that back table. My friend and I arrived here on a weekday at 10 so we didn't have to wait for a seat. We both got the two eggs benedict and added lemon-truffle hashbrowns and loved it. We were both quite full after. The hashbrowns were oily - which is a given - but I'm craving it right now because I really like the taste of truffle oil!!! In the end my meal came out to be around $20 which included the food and coffee. Kind of expensive but it tasted good at least! Note on the establishment: The washroom is in the back and it seemed like it wasn't connect to the heating system because it was SUPER COLD! I also felt it was kind of old-looking.. but I guess it can't be that new considering the building itself. I didn't realize that Yolk's had an actual restaurant until just this summer when friends of mine went. Since this review is going to be about the food, I won't comment on the restaurants decor, except to say it's in Downtown's East Side. I ordered the Portobello Mushroom Benny, with double eggs and a side of hash browns. The eggs were cooked just the way I like it, soft and runny. The sauces were all superb and a nice portion of mushrooms. The hash browns were also delicious. It's too bad that you have to order it separately if you want it with your Benny. The other choice would have been to order the mushroom on top of the hash browns - which was what my friend ordered. Yolk's has their own version of ketchup, which we were told was a little spicy. Upon eating it with the delicious hash browns, my friend said that it reminded him of ketchup chips! I can only speak to my brunch experience here, and I must say I am highly impressed with the scrumptious food and the excellent service (our server was helpful and efficient, at least). Chicken and waffles: I've had this ridiculous creation at other places before, and yet I was pleasantly blown away by this dish. Very meaty and tender fried chicken lying atop decadent waffles that had enough structure to hold up against the mouthwatering syrup and gravy mix. Hashbrowns with lemon and truffle oil: They were nice. I must declare my bias towards all things potato, however. French toast with bangers: Our server recommended this, and I'm so glad I trusted her. They're unlike any French toast you've had before. They're deep fried so they're crispy, and served with delicious maple syrup. The bangers served with grainy mustard complemented the sweetness of this dish perfectly. I had really high expectations for yolks after hearing amazing things about it. I like that they message you when your table is nearly ready. I was told 40 minutes but after 11 minutes I got the message that a table is almost ready so the wait wasn't bad. It's a tiny place so you can't wait inside. I think perhaps our expectations were set too high, because my friend mentioned the egg was good cause it was runny, but otherwise unremarkable. We both tried the truffled potatoes but it wasn't amazing as some people have mentioned. It was good for a first bite I guess. My chicken and waffles: chicken was moist and cooked well and plump. The bread ing was light. However, I just didn't love it for some reason. Maybe it's because I'm more of an eggs and hash kinda brunch guy, but I didn't find the chicken and waffles amazing. It was good and filling, but maybe what it was lacking was more flavour for the chicken. The waffle was pretty good. It had maple syrup and chicken gravy soaked into it a bit. It's a great first impression. First visit I would have given a 5 Star review. In fact, the first few visits were great! With exception to today's visit and the last visit. Last time Staff ignored me when I was waiting to be seated so I decided if they're gonna ignore me I'll force them to see me and thus prompt them to serve me. I really like the Yolks breakfast. I have always substituted the toast for a half waffle. Today I attempted to place that same order and they decided to say "there's no substitute" but I was determined to still order what I waited 25 minutes for to order. I mean, the food is fantastic! There's always a lineup. It's worth the wait. However, with the "no substitute" the bill costed $10 more to get what I originally wanted. The excuse was that the substitute complicated reading the bill order but in my opinion the restaurant saw a way to make more money on sales with their "no substitute". My Server initially felt inconvenienced to go ask but reluctantly she went. Still the answer was "no substitute" by this time I was about to walk and this after waiting 25 minutes to be seated. At this time I thought I'd order anyways but only because I was hungry. Then I thought if I could manipulate the menu I'll see what the price difference would be and wow it's an additional $10's. While looking at the menu my Server then became more pleasant and more helpful. I forgot to include a cup of coffee. She offered to pay for my coffee. When it came to paying my bill I gave a good tip because she was working hard and overall great service but I also factored in $3 for that cup of coffee and so in the end gave a 25% tip to factor in the cost of the coffee. I can't be rude to my Server when the issue I have is with her boss. I believe the lady who brought out my food was one of the managers. Her smile seemed fake. I've seen how packed this restaurant got pre-covid so if they're overwhelmed with 50% capacity and can't read a bill order for one simple substitute then what they really want is a way to get more money through unreasonable methods. Quite honestly, if they want more money then what they can do is allow for a simple substitute which most restaurants make allowances for. In this way their customer is happy even with paying a little more for a substitute and it keeps the price of food at a reasonable cost that would enable the customer to return on a more regular basis. My bill came to $32 ... so subtract $3 for that coffee and technically with tip $29 for 2 poached eggs, 3 hashbrowns and 2 English bangers and a half waffle. That's like the price of 2 meals in 1 before taxes and tip. So instead of enjoying breakfast at Yolks every Sunday which would be about $100/mo profit for them now they'll gain about 75% less profit from me because now instead of coming to Yolks every Sunday it's a Luxury I can't afford to spend on a weekly basis and the price so ridiculously high and their unwillingness to allow for a simple substitute makes Yolks Breakfast less desirable. Perhaps what they intend is to serve only upper class folks and become less accommodating to folks who appear to have less money. Restaurants should be accommodating to all their customers regardless of how much money their potential customers look like they have. Isn't the idea to bring in as many returning customers as possible? I understand a restaurant like Yolks will have prices a little higher then say places like IHOP or Denny's. That's understandable but to manipulate an order to add $10 to a plate vs $5 for a simple substitute is just rude. I'll have to really think hard next time I come back. And think hard the next time I want waffles. I think I'll get a waffle maker and make my own phenomenal waffles so that next time I have a craving for waffles I'll save my hard earned money and make better waffles at home. That said, I can't make poached eggs as good as they do at Yolks. So in that way they picked a perfect name for a little breakfast nook that's a super convenient location just down the street from where I live. But honestly, prices are so ridiculously high that few people can return week after week. In this area it's a great place to go every once in a while but one of those places you go to for something special. Like if you have money to spend and you wanna meet up with a friend you haven't seen in like for years then take your friend to Yolks. If you like going for Sunday brunch then I highly recommend places like Ricky's or ABC. I would have given a 5 Star review but due to their inability to give me a warm welcome and their unwillingness to accommodate a simple request I had to give 3 Stars. read more

On a Saturday morning, they were quite busy. A table for 6, we were given a wait time of around 35 minutes. Eventually we were seated and didn't realize we had waited that much longer, but the manager offered us beignets on the house for having to wait longer than expected, which was nice and unexpected. I ordered the pancakes with blueberry and asked for the English bangers. However, when it came, it was served with bacon. I told the server and she brought some back right away. As well, my friend had to wait longer than expected for his meal, so it was also on the house. The pancakes were good and had plenty of blueberry. I usually would not wait this long but I really wanted to try this place and also being Sunday most places will have some type of a wait anyway. We saw this diner featured on the Food Network and gave it a shot. The diner itself is not very clean. The men's bathroom had a trough-like urinal which was not very clean. My wife reports the woman's room and was clean. As I walked by the kitchen, I was was not impressed with the level of cleanliness. I ordered the day's special, a pulled pork eggs benny. After living in Vancouver for so long, I finally got a chance to try out Yolks! This new location is pretty bright and vibrant and the staff is super friendly. I ordered the portobello eggs Benedict and it's exactly as it should be. I had the hasbrown patties in the side and you get 3 big ones. It was nice and crispy on the outside and light on the inside. The only issue I had was that they were a little floury on the inside that gave it a bit of an undercooked taste and texture. But the flavour is definitely there. Over all a great dine :) read more

Came here on New Years day. There was a huge lineup. Most of it were groups of 2 and I had a group of 4. We arrived around 1245 and there was a 30-40min wait. We didn't mind. If you plan on coming, come early and expect a wait. There were a couple of spots that were open but people didn't want to sit at the bar or along a long table near the door. If you don't mind, you may be able to get something earlier. They had crispy pork belly benny as their special. My friend ordered that. It was really good. They gave a lot of potatoes and the quality of the benny and pork was just right. I ordered the waffles and a side of fresh fruits. My waffles was moist and tender. It wasn't a lot as there was no hash browns/potatoes. They serve 49th Parallel coffee. It was good, like you would get at 49th Parallel. The servers were friendly,. Our waitress was great. She was outgoing and loved to talk which made it more enjoyable. There isn't a lot on the menu, which I find is good as they can focus on the food. The quality and taste of thr food was delicious. I had heard so much about this place I had been dying to go for so long. We waited in line for 25 mins in the pouring rain and it was worth it! After a forty-five minute wait, we were seated and hungry. I felt obligated to try the notable chicken and waffles (with organic fried chicken, Belgian waffles, chicken gravy, and Canadian maple syrup) and it didn't disappoint with a nice, well-cooked piece of chicken with all the fixings. I found the truffle-lemon hashbrowns (with organic potatoes, lemon, truffle oil, sea salt, and chives) quite delightful and was tasting truffle all afternoon. They came with a side and we were recommended the sausages as they were also quite savoury. After getting in I have to say I much prefer the Yolk's on West Broadway! This original location is a bit dirty and grimy! It seems like a lot tougher environment this East side Yolk's. Certainly the West Broadway location is more genital. I ordered the Fried Chicken with waffles. It was ok, but I think Jam makes it better. Recently visited their new location on East Hastings. It's bright, clean, and offers the same Yolks menu with a few new additions. My favorite is the eggs benny over the truffle hashbrowns with hollandaise sauce. The potatoes are the best! The chicken and waffles are also very tasty. Chicken is tender on the inside, crispy on the outside and comes with syrup and gravy. Love their take on the French toast which is panko-crusted. Yum! read more

Food - Over seasoned and eggs were not done correctly Service - good at first and fell apart after Cleanliness - really bad coffee stains in the coffee mugs. Something that I would expect from a diner on the side of the road, not here. If we could have found a server to have shared our opinions about the lack of quality, we would have. Cute brunch spot to try if you are in the area, but not a place I would go out of my way to eat at, given the many brunch places in the metro. Come here on a weekday to avoid lines. I ordered the portobello aioli eggs benny with toasted English muffin and homemade Hollandaise sauce, topped with homemade spicy ketchup (not actually that spicy) and it was decent but nothing outstanding.I think that they use organic eggs because the yolks were orange in color. And although we don't visit Yolks for their entertainment, having her serve your table is an extra treat. And furthermore, the food is amazing!
