Visit: 5/27/09 - Dinner. Ate the Meat Jun and BBQ Chicken. Meat Jun was okay. The meat was tough, but tasty. BBQ Chicken was okay. Stringy and salty. We had take out. Waited 40 mins before I got my order. They gave my order away to someone else. Then they had to make it over again. By this time, all the good side dishes were gone. Bad thing about this place is that the owner eats all the good side dishes before dinner rush comes. They make this tasty egg side dish and it was gone by 5pm when I arrived. I could tell she had eaten all the egg side dish because she had 3 of them sitting on her plate. She tried to hide it under a shelf. Waiting for 40 minutes, allows you a lot of time to scan her whole front counter. Price is expensive. The side dishes are all cheap veggies stuff. They don't give you much of the side dishes either. Above average tasting Korean 'fast food'. You order and they cook up the main item in the kitchen while you choose panchan from the buffet set up. Portions are large and 2 orders were more than enough to feed me, hubby and our 5 yr old. Actually, we were quite stuffed with just the 2 portions. Wasn't expensive either. Meal came to $15. Best of Breed? Yoonyson (son of Yoony?) is a Hawaiian-type* Korean fast-food "restaurant" (McDonalds calls their establishments "restaurants" don't they?). I consider them to be best of breed in this crowded field, or nearly best. For those that don't know, these places usually have a wide variety of Korean entrees and give you the choice of several "panchan" (small side dishes) to go along with your meal. The success of the meal like this depends a lot on the quality of the panchan, and in this department Yoonyson will not let you down. The panchan are all fresh, piled high and beautifully seasoned. At other places I have sometimes experienced near-empty trays of panchan requiring the server to troll the "bottom of the barrel" to come up with a serving (ew), poorly made kim chee, or a contemptibly small selection to choose from. In Yoonyson's case there is an array of sixteen panchan from which to choose. With a "regular" large plate you get four choices, with a "mini" you get two. To give you some idea the selections they include cabbage kim chee, cucumber kim chee, marinated seaweed, marinated long rice (cellophane noodles), pickled daikon (white radish), taegu (spicy candied cuttlefish), spicy tofu, Korean potato salad, and many more. The entrees too, are generally well-made however there are style issues that arise. The kalbi (barbecued bone-on beef rib) and bulgogi (shaved barbecued beef) are a little on the sweet side and lack the crispy edges that a homemade barbecue would produce. The meat and fish "jun" (meaning fried in egg batter) might be a touch too much egg and not enough beef or fish. The soup broths may be too spicy for some and not spicy enough for others. But overall, most entrees are handled well. Quantity-wise the potions are, huge; construction-worker huge but with the "mini" plate costing roughly 80% of a "regular" plate (the mini has 2 less panchan, less of the entree and half the amout of rice), it is no bargain. I have been to a lot of these places in Hawai'i and I rate Yoonyson in the top three at least. When you're on the windward side of Oahu stop in and try the place. It's located in a shopping center called "Windward City." if you're a fan of Korean food, I don't think you'll be disappointed. *********************************** *By Hawaiian-type I mean the places are set up basically like a McDonalds; counter, overhead back-lit menu board, formica tables and chairs. I wish I would have taken the advice from the negative reviews and NOT eat here. It was my first time tonight and I came because I wanted garlic potatoes... Well the garlic potatoes weren't all that great, definitely not Yummy's! It had a funny taste to it..the bbq chicken was pink inside...it looked cooked but it was pinkish in color... While my preference would have been for Thai food I always feel weird eating in a restaurant by myself. I didn't want fast food, which is what they have a lot of in this shopping center. I come here all the time. Why I love Yoonyson - reasonable prices and huge portions, tons of really healthy side options, super yummy bbq meats. I try to do modified paleo and it is easy here - you can get a plate of mostly veggies (if you skip the rice, they'll give you an extra side instead) and some super tasty meats for $13 and it's enough for 2-3 meals. And when I've feeling naughty, I can't resist their potato salad - hands down the best I've ever had. It's definitely a take-out place. It gets too smokey in there to eat comfortably and there is little to no ambiance to speak of. All of the different dishes we ordered were well made, delicious and warm. We travel the island looking for good spicy pork Korean barbecue and I love the spicy pork dish here! It's lean, thin and delicious!! All of the side dishes were delicious and they don't let old food stay out, they were always replacing the side dishes in the case. The service was excellent and you get a lot of food for the price! It's a small restaurant with a few tables so it's best to take out and eat at home or along the beach. Customers do not spend the money at Yoony's!! Go to Tasty's Korean BBQ or Kim Chee 1 instead especially if you live in the Kaneohe area. We used to order a lot from Yoony's since they opened next to Kin Sun and Kozo Sushi. Recently, the quality of food has been going down hill. They don't care about the freshness & quality of their food. It's sad especially Since take out Korean food is so expensive, most customers expect **freshly** and good tasting cooked food. Unfortunately, they cook their meat jun and BBQ chicken in advance and then heat it up before they put it in the plate, so they can provide quicker service. However, by doing this, the meat jun is really dried out & chewy and the egg is rubbery as well as the chicken being dry. We always order the shoyu potatoes because this is our son's favorite side, but we noticed it tasted sour---spoiled and old. The potatoes were a really dark and mushy in color and not the usual color a "light brown." I spoke with Cecilia (owner), instead of Cecilia's apology for the unsatisfactory food, she started to disagree and argue with me saying this is not what we received & the potatoes were fresh and not spoiled. She also argued that she cooked the meat jun herself and it was freshly cooked. I told her three people in my family could taste the sourness in the potato and they could tell the meat jun was dried out and old. Plus, I told her wouldn't take the time to call to give feedback if the food was properly cooked and serve. She continued to argue saying she cooks fresh food and its not dried out or sour. I advised her if she thinks she's a good cook and this is her best meat jun, then she's a terrible cook & we won't be going there any longer. I ended the call. But, then, instead of ending the discussion, Cecilia calls back my phone & continues arguing again saying she hired a new boy, so maybe he put out the old, spoiled food. Again, instead of simply apologizing---Cecilia lies and blames her new employee in order to defend herself. Lying and calling back a customer to argue again is a very poor reflection of her character. She also insisted on getting my name and phone #. If this isn't harassment, then I don't know what is?? Cecilia the owner should not be harassing customers because it doesn't look good for her business. We definitely don't want to deal with this crazy place and owner! There's better places to eat at in Kaneohe. We'd strongly, strongly recommend to spend your money somewhere else. read more

I don't know why this place gets such bad reviews. It's take out local style Korean food that's comparable to much more known "chain" fast food Korean joints. Maybe because this place is cash only people have an expectation it's gotta be good? I dunno. Anyway, this place has an awesome deal offering a BBQ beef sandwich and fries for only 6 bucks. The beef is juicy and tender and their fries are made to order and the frying oil's fresh. Much cheaper and tastier than MCD's McTeri Burger, which, as of this date, is being offered at the Hawaii Golden Arches. So if you're out on the Windward side, try this place out. read more
