Yuan Wonton was FANTASTIC. Seriously, every single bite was delicious. This is one of those meals where you keep looking across the table like, "Okay... but THIS one might be my favorite." Then the next plate comes out and you start all over again. Before coming, I was reading reviews and came across one discussing the seats and seating, followed by a comment describing the staff as basically a bunch of "muscle bears." And while, IMO, the staff was certainly very attractive, what stood out to us was that everyone was just incredibly friendly and welcoming. Big, small, muscle bear or otherwise. Lol. Also... we didn't come here for the seating. WE CAME TO EAT. Let's simma down! This chef started in a food truck, and the food is clearly still the heart of the entire experience. The ambience was fantastic, the space had a great energy, and the service was wonderful. For a James Beard award winner this was mid and that's me being kind. I guess they went on a date the menu was better. We made the reservation sometime ago for early dinner. It's in a cute part of the neighborhood and parking was surprisingly easy. I think it shares the store with a bakery. It's like Gem that way. Bakery by morning, mid-level dumpling place by night. Which is a nifty concept for restaurants that want to make the jump from food truck to brick and mortar. Basic seating. Oddly I did notice most of the servers were muscle bears. I mean ok cool. Nice ambience. Basic chairs with bakery tables. We had the dumplings, long beans, and bao buns. The one dumpling was the shrimp/pork that everyone raves about and bland. Really tasteless. After Chef Penelope Wong's selection as the James Beard Best Chef Mountain Region for 2026 you need a reservation to get in. The place is totally slammed -- booked solid. And that is a good thing. She and her exceptional team deserve it. The food is delicious, the service exceptional and the offerings wonderful. I stopped by for lunch and even with her recent fame, the restaurant remains consistently wonderful. The potstickers remain my favorite although the tender and juicy wontons are worthy of attention. It was a weekday, so wasn't busy at the start, but the place filled up by the time we left. The restaurant itself is very pleasant; simply decorated and comfortable. The journey of chef Penelope Wong and Yuan Wonton has been incredible. From a food truck to a brick and mortar award winning restaurant, Yuan Wonton is simply an incredible restaurant. The primary focus here is an ever changing list of delicious dumplings and other Chinese classic. The OG chili dumplings are delicious with plump, juicy filling wrapped up in delicate wrappers providing a pleasant toothsome bite. It's perfectly seasoned for me and I love that it's not too salty or oily, allowing you to really enjoy the flavor of the filling with just a touch of chili oil. The potstickers (not pictured cause we absolutely destroyed them) are perfectly fried, though the dumpling wrapper is a touch of the gummy side. Finally the peanut sauce wonton are incredible. Savory, peanutty, and absolutely delicious and definitely a must have if they're on the menu. Finished the meal with a delicious tropical pavlova with lychee and tangerine. The whipped cream is ethereal and the meringue provides a nice contrast of textures and flavor with the fresh fruit. Overall, what more could be said about this place. Got there a few minutes before opening and was seated at the counter which was great because I could see all the different dishes coming from the kitchen. Food was solid! The bread on the banmih was just the right crunch and the filling was delicious with thick slices of sweetened pork. The chili wontons were amazing and I loved the thin wonton wrapper which allowed me to fully taste the filling. Also had the peanut noodle dish which another great choice! The staff was great. Wow!!! So happy to have found a place of this caliber in our community. I stumbled onto it while researching lunch spots -- Yelp pointed me here, and the reviews didn't lie. Reservations are OpenTable only, and good luck getting one; I tried for days with zero availability for 2. Finally scored a 1:00 slot the morning of and couldn't have been happier. The wontons were amazing, the spritz cocktails were on point, and the sweet & sour pork special stole the show. Service was spot-on, the vibe clean and modern, and the food genuinely excellent. No surprise the chef-owner just won a James Beard -- I expect tables will only get harder to snag from here, but I'm up for the challenge. Can't wait to come back with friends and family. We went to Yuan Wonton for lunch, an hour before close, so it was not super busy (yay for us). Service was attentive and quick. We would have ordered everything on the menu if our stomachs had the room. I did not take a picture of our menu; it appears this may change pretty often. Looking online, I see many options that weren't on our menu the day we came. We ordered the YW OG chili oil wontons (sauce was on the side due to our little one), Shelby J (this was my favorite), Dan Dan noodles (flavorful but has a kick), spicy peanut sauce wontons (I could drink Ngoc's peanut sauce), mapo tofu sandwich (will get to this one), and a steamed mantou ( I am not sure how to feel about this one. Buns were perfectly steamed but wished there was a subtle sweetness to it). The Mapo tofu sandwich was a highlight for us. Innovative and amazingly executed. Who would've thought a tofu sandwich based off a traditional dish would be so good! The buns were soft, the tofu perfectly crisped for contrast and the sauce made for the lingering Sichuan burn. This is an example of a place that knows what it is and does it flawlessly. While the OG Wontons and Shelby Js were really good, what clinched Yuan Wonton a 5-star rating for me was the Pad Krapao Potstickers. One of the best potstickers I've ever had and the dipping sauce was out of this world. I will say this isn't a cheap lunch. Our server said she usually recommends 3-4 things for a party of 2. We weren't super hungry when we arrived, and we started with 2 dishes and then put in a 3rd. Plus drinks, you're easily spending over $60. The spot is cute, the staff is nice, but really you're going for the food. With that said, if price is a concern I think your money might go farther elsewhere when it comes to the experience as a whole. OMG Yuan Wonton is some of the best food we have had in Denver recently...or ever! This is our second time visiting them. We had been trying to go on a Thursday as our hands-down favorite at our first visit was the YW XL XLB (xiao long bao), and it just so happens to be only available on Thursdays, at least for now. This time we ordered two YW XL XLB, the Shelby J's, and a salt & pepper chicken sandwich. Everything was fantastic! The XL XLB's were exactly what we remembered them being, and incredibly delicious! The chicken sandwich was also a standout. The Chinese flour roll was so unique, and the chicken was moist and flavorful. The Shelby J's pan fried baos were great too, we just regretted ordering it the same time as the XLB as the filling was the same as (I think) the filling on the XLB minus the house bone broth. We wished we had thought about this and should have opted for something else with an entirely different flavor profile, like the Tom Kha chicken wontons. Nevertheless the Shelby J's were delicious! It all was! Make sure you follow them on Instagram and you can keep up with their changing menu and plan the day you visit accordingly. Have wanted to eat here forever and finally got the chance after an event. Chef Penelope Wong was kind enough to host a celebratory lunch for us. We were welcomed at once by her staff even though they didn't know us. Friendly and welcoming to everyone, they are so cheerful and polite. The place is bright and inviting with patio seating available. Such a calming atmosphere. The food is delicious. Everyone has something different and it was all good. I picked at different plates and was not disappointed by the delicacy of the wontons, potstickers or dessert. A balance of sweet and savory with intricate sauces. Sauces which bring back childhood memories of grandma's cooking while the main dish is Asian with a twist. Like the chicken satay dumplings I had. And the pad krapao potstickers were heavenly. There's no denying that the chef(s) take complete pride in the quality of the food. The wontons are stunning by look, deliciously homemade outer layer, and beautifully crafted sauces. We tried an assortment. Some weren't my personal flavor profile but nothing against the quality. (1) Spicy peanut wontons: that sauce is spoon-able. Soooo damn good! I wouldn't consider it spicy either and I have a lower spice tolerance (2) OG wontons: really good. Good sauce. On the spicy end but you can get the sauce on the side. (3) eggplant dumplings: these are very veggie flavor forward. You can really taste the spinach outer layer and the eggplant is super prevalent. The sauce was amazing though! This immediately became my favorite Asian restaurant in Denver (yes there are many Asian cuisines, this tops all of them). The one downside is the takeout ordering process. The menu changes and you can't find the current menu online. So I had to call to order and the person on the phone patiently repeated it many times for me while I figured out what I wanted. As a visual person, this was a very challenging way to order. They said it should be on Instagram, but it wasn't today. Ordering challenges aside, the food is outstanding. I'm not 100% sure what all I ordered because I couldn't keep up with trying to write it all down as they read the menu to me. The only thing I know is that it was all phenomal. I have to shout it from the rooftops that I have found my new favorite place. First of all let me explain that this isn't a food truck. This is a class act in culinary skills and service. I'll start by sharing that if I didn't look closely at the door. I might have missed it, but I'm glad that I didn't. The thing that made it hard to find was this great little dog park right in the middle of buildings in which there were a lot of people enjoying the outside, however they should've been inside trying everything on the menu. By the way, I love the fact that there is a new menu every time you go in, and while they rotate a few dishes, the majority of them are new and what I suspect,incredible. I had to try the dumplings so I ordered the spicy peanut dumplings, which were unreal. Every dumpling was savory and the sauce just pulled it together with a sweet taste of peanut butter. Not so thick like a peanut butter, but just enough to coat the outside of it and make it something spectacular. It didn't stop there because I had to try the Dan Dan noodles, which I am so glad that I did. Yes I'm one person, but calm down, I knew I was taking some home for dinner and that I did. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and the Dan Dan had just enough flavor to really pull the dish together, but it was the peanuts on top that paired it with the dumplings perfectly. Did you say stop there? I didn't. Finally I had to try the mango custard dessert with tapioca balls. I just can't describe the flavors of each layer of the dessert with the pieces of lychee and mango at the top. You can't stop eating this dessert. "You wanna wonton?" If so, this is the place to come. Liked: all the food. This is gourmet stuff, clearly made by hand and with a wondrous chef's touch. We loved the chili oil wontons and the giant XLB soup dumpling. The pad krapao potstickers were good and Shelby J's bao was delicious. Forbidden rice pudding for dessert was a hit. My least favorite item we tried was the Szechuan eggplant dumplings, but another person at our table said that was their favorite item. Service from Heather was very good. There is a bakery inside the restaurant with some wonderful breads, muffins, and other treats. Any negatives? It gets pretty noisy in the room. Unlike many reviewers who first experienced Yuan Wonton in its food truck days, my first foray with Yuan Wonton was actually via a featured Friday sake dinner. Everything about that dinner was spectacular: the service was on point; the food was expertly crafted, perfectly seasoned and beautifully presented; and the sake brewers coordinated by Monica Samuels were top notch. It was an excellent event, and truly no notes (other than to say Khao Soi dumplings was a dish I didn't know I needed in my life). I had intended to review Yuan Wonton after that, but somehow it slipped my mind and then eventually I told myself I needed another meal there to partake in the normal lunch experience. Work being what it is, that took a little finagling (scheduling here is the only downside, but I appreciate Shef's intentions on that front). So when I recently sat down with an old friend, we decided to order a veritable feast. Truly every dish was a winner. Our server Heather recommended the Shumai, which I might not have gravitated towards otherwise, and it was honestly one of my favorite dishes. The Chasiu Pork bao were so tender and perfectly steamed that they jiggled on the plate as they moved around the dining room. and the Taiwanese Chicken gua bao were so substantial and flavorful that I would happily polish a plate for lunch every day if that wasn't impractical. Every aspect of the buzzing dining room was functioning like a well oiled machine; so I will say if you're able to make time during normal service you too can have the most amazing meal with no regrets. I will definitely be making an effort to try some of the other dishes we were not able to squeeze in soon, and would love to check out one of the recurring Chifa nights. (Also Yuan Wonton is now doing take away and HH on Thursday and Fridays as well!) Finally just a shoutout to Shef Penelope Wong who has clearly put her heart and soul into this place. I fell in love when it was a Food Truck. I would await the social media alerts and get in line, many times too late to actually get to try the dumplings. It is so much easier to try her and her team's delicious cooking from her brick and mortar location on Fairfax. I have previously tried the OG wontons. So perfectly seasoned but be warned, if you can not tolerate spice, they only come spicy. The Tom Kha Chicken Wontons are such a wonderful hearty dumpling with bursts of lemongrass and kaffir lime with each bite. Today I had the chicken Banh Mi which is truly the best I have ever eaten. The best dumplings I've had in denver. We went for lunch on a Thursday. The space was bright and airy and the staff were friendly. The menu apparently changes frequently. We ordered the salt and pepper chicken sandwich, the Thai chicken wontons (called something else) and the peanut wontons. Everything was delicious. The chicken sandwich was like nothing I have ever tasted before and was crispy, light , flavorful , delicious and spicy. An outstanding dish and maybe the highlight for me of the meal. My sons favorite were the wontons in a peanut sauce and they were truly delicious. They reminded me of a delicious dish I used to order when I lived in NYC and it was a definite win. The Thai wontons were also lovely and a fun take on dumplings. I loved how our server did not push us into over order. I was stuffed with 3 orders 2 people . Let's just say that this place was recommended by my boyfriend's family member and since none of us had ever been, we decided to make a reservation prior to travelling to Denver. Located in a cute area which is located on Fairfax, parking seemed to be fairly easy. Then again, we went on a Friday and our reservation was for 12:15pm which worked out great as we were catching up! When they tell you it is an experience, please take their word for it. We were told about two off menu items, which we decided to try. One was a fried pork dumpling, but because she spoke too fast, we decided to give it a go and it did not disappoint at all. That crunchy later tasted almost like a crispy wonton but the flavors were delectable. The second item was practically a pork belly roll w/mushrooms, but let me tell you their sauce was amazing. We then proceeded to order the following items: Steamed Chasiu Pork Bao - Definitely enjoyed the sweet and savory aspect to this dish. Chicken & Chive Wontons in Ginger Bone Broth - reminded me of their chili oil wonton/ dumplings listed on their menu, however we wanted chicken. Shu Mai - the goji berry gave it a different flavor but it was good! We had water as we wanted to taste their flavors in its entirety. The decor was simple yet elegant at the same time! RUN DON'T WALK. I had a lovely lunch here today. Never disappointing. Everything was really special - despite meeting up for lunch at 2PM, the service and meal felt like an intimate and relaxed dinner. We enjoyed four dishes to share among three m, and it was perfect. Our service was super curated and special (I'm so sorry I don't have her name, but shorter and lives really close to the restaurant) - great recommendations and smooth in her style. The Mongolian beef was a standout and so was the Thursday salt and pepper chicken sandwich. Like whoa. Chef Penelope understands flavors and that sandwich truly represents that. Bravo team! I live down the road from here and have visited often with my husband. Every time we come, the food is 10/10 and the service is great. The menu rotates but I have never had a bad meal. It's easy to see why the chef won a James Beard award. Would recommend a reservation as the place is small, but with a little planning ahead it's definitely worth it. read more
