I hate buffets. Growing up, my parents trained me and my brother to eat a certain way at a buffet. We had to: 1. eat between 8-10 plates, preferably 10. 2. of those 10 plates, 7 should be filled with the most expensive ingredients, no mashed potatoes, rolls, lettuce, or anything cheap. Go for the seafood! Here, the same rules apply. However, since I'm on a diet, I can only eat 6 plates. Rice is a filler, I might have forgotten to mention that. Unfortunately, Yukai likes to use a lot of rice, and skimp on the meat. Which I can understand, since a lot of people may pick the sushi to test it, only to decide they dislike it. Or, because they think they're being sneaky and filling up unaware customers' stomachs with that mess. Oh, and another big pet peeve. Their seaweed salad. What the heck, COME ON. They use rice noodles and dye them a neon green, and mix it with the ocean salad. The rice noodles are super cheap, whereas the salad isn't quite as cheap. So annoying, instead of the crunch I expect from the seaweed, I get a mush from the noodles. Stop being so cheap, jeez! They have a mongolian bbq section, it's decent. Not the biggest selection, but at least you can get noodles here that won't be limp or soggy like other selections they may have. Also you can get your money's worth if you pile on the meat. In fact, someone please, just go get a plate of JUST steak, it might make up for all the money wasted on eating rice sushi. But I'll give them credit for having an okay selection of sushi. They even have a wasabi cream and spicy sauce in a squeeze bottle if you want to rack on the flavor (see, mayonnaise). What I do like about this place, is the cheesecake/buttercake they have. It's an asian cheesecake on top, and then a buttercake on the bottom. I eat like 6 slices each time, but they're small so it's sort of acceptable, but not really. The ice creams they have here are in small packaged containers, like the kind you got in elementary school. For the most part, the flavors are chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate and vanilla swirl, coffee ice cream, and raspberry, lemon, and orange sherbert. During dinner they have these fried sesame rice balls with a redbean center. It sounds gross, but they rule. Get them. They're next to the honey rolls and pizza. If you come during lunch, there's no raw oysters or sashimi. But just get the nigiri sushi and discard the rice. The chinese can glare at me all they want, but them being skimpy on the food isn't going to stop me from fulfilling 'the rules'! read more

So at first, I used to come all the time, but now it's not so much my thing. Some good things I like about the place, they offer more than just sushi (i.e. Chicken and broccoli, lo mein, etc..) and they have chefs preparing the sushi fresh. However, the few times I had went, that sense of "fresh" isn't there anymore. I notice they had a froyo machine but even that tasted weird. Pleasantly surprised by Yukai. The location nestled in between a hot yoga studio and Navy Federal Credit Union did not get my hopes up. However a banner indicating best buffet by yahoo travel led me to believe it was worth at least looking it up online. Saw the youtube clip and went in. Totally worth it, affordable and a surprisingly vast and flavorful spread. The attention to details on little things like full shrimp pieces in the shu Mai. Yukai would have to be one of my most favorite buffet spots in Virginia Beach. We definitely dine here regularly; I even had my birthday here once. The sushi is awesome. Such a good variety, and it's constantly being made. I have this weird obsession with their Pringles topped with tobiko (fish roe/tiny fish eggs). I eat at least 6 of those, and am sad when they don't have it that day. I also love their sashimi. Salmon allll day. For their regular section of buffet goods, I am never disappointed either - Korean BBQ, fried rice, walnut chicken and walnut shrimp, you know, the usual, but their flavors and quality are better than other buffets. For their dessert - they have the usual Asian pastries and even have froyo and toppings now! If you're in the Laskin Road area, and feel like eating sushi/buffet, definitely try Yukai out! They have military discount too, but it's only applied to the meal of the person who owns/shows ID, not good for the entire check. Also if you come on the weekend, expect a wait. read more

Buffet with a huge variety! The hot food section has standard chinese dishes with chicken, beef, and shrimp. They also have Rockefeller style oysters. My favorite dish in that section is the coconut shrimp. The cold section has all their sushi items and majority of their desserts. There are several types of rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and even cooked items. The sushi is average which is standard for a buffet. Nothing special to note about the dessert in that section. The hibachi grill will cook your noodle dish after you add all the meat and vegetables that you want in it. There is also a soft serve ice cream machine and some toppings. It's a little hidden, away from the main food area, close to the entrance of the restaurant. There is also alcohol served there at their bar which I didn't get a chance to partake in. Overall, good experience. Don't forget to ask for the military discount like I did, it'll save you a couple bucks. read more

You should go here if you're trying to get fat. I mean really. If you wake up one day and you say, "You know what, I want to gain some weight!"- then you should go here. I say that because the food is pretty darn good. Even though it is a buffet (and everyone has a small fear in them because you really don't know who handled the tongs right before you), the place is kept pretty clean and the dishes are kept reasonably fresh. Hands down they have some of the best sushi in the area that you can find on a buffet. Good selection- mackerel, clam, white tuna, salmon and assorted rolls. Although I have no idea whats up with the orange roe on a pringle chip. They also have a great hot food area including a hibachi grill. I wind up putting away 4 plates of everything when I go here. I am really going to try not to be a food snob here- but if you are coming from NOVA, DC, MD and you have eaten at sushi buffets like Todai- do not expect to have a good experience here. The sushi was so awful that I was afraid to eat more after I ate my first one. No one was operating the hibachi. The crab cake was all filler. The chinese food was old looking. What was good? The BBQ ribs (falling off the bone), the Korean Kalbi ribs. Oh and don't get a Mojito here- it's made with a mix and tastes awful. Now- for $13 per person - it's a good "value". We were in the mood for some AYCE sushi and this place had some stellar reviews and was just recently voted by Yahoo as the best buffet in the whole state of Virginia!! Although they do have a pretty extensive array of sushi rolls here, they do offer other types of food including: Japanese (Calamari, Udon noodles, seaweed salad, etc), American, some Chinese dishes, oysters, Hibachi grill bar, dessert station (including a chocolate fountain!), and even a fro yo machine! But most people obviously come for their sushi spread. They had about 15-20 different types of sushi rolls, all of which varied from philly to fried rolls and eel rolls and everything in between. They also actually have sashimi here as well on our visit but it was only made once the whole time we were there but it included some big chunks of tuna, salmon, and yellow tail so get it before they're gone! The quality of the sushi was pretty good, definitely better than your standard buffets but also not the best quality either. I think for the Saturday lunch buffet it was $16 a person (give or take a dollar) which I thought was fair given the sushi quality and selection. Our waitress was attentive and refilled our drinks, cleared our plates and gave us extra plates for the bones/shells even when we didn't ask for it. This place was also very clean as well which I appreciated! The tables/floors/serving stations didn't feel sticky or appear to be dirty which is always a plus and makes the food more appealing. read more

I got desperate for chinese buffet! This was open later than sushi king so I decided to come here to try it out. I came around 715pm. I did not realize that 90% of their menu is only seafood, which I don't eat. It was $20 and not worth the price if you aren't into shrimp, crab legs, etc. The sushi was not replenished during my visit. I do enjoy volcano rolls but the volcano roll they offered is much smaller and much different than anywhere else I have ever been. It's 99% rice and 1% middle filling. They ran out within 5 minutes of me being there and never restocked. The hibachi bar was decent but did not have a big selection of items to choose from. The pho was out when I went, which was a big selling point for me to eat here. The chicken dishes were scarce and the hour I was there they remained empty. The egg drop soup and miso was good, though. They didn't have meat egg rolls, just spring rolls. I was expecting more of a mix of a chinese buffet with the sushi but most of the food bar was poorly made and poorly stocked sushi. You are provided one pair of gloves to use every trip to the food bar. You're expected to wear your mask. Most folks complied with this but people were on top of each other trying to get food. Went to their restaurant this evening, they were doing well with covid precautions, making us social distance, wearing gloves, and masks. However, something went wrong. I suggest you don't eat their raw items unless youve got a really strong stomach, my father eats well and alot and normally nothing really goes wrong, which we were alarmed when he started vomiting past midnight due to the raw oysters this restaurant served. This place is by no means spectacular, but compared to many other AYCE sushi buffets, it's pretty satisfactory. The restaurant is very clean and the staff kept circling the buffet to make sure that everything was full and orderly. Despite hoards of people messing up the sushi pieces (myself included), there was a girl there who kept rearranging the items so they looked nice and neat. It might just be the fact that she had OCD or something but I took notice of this attention to detail. The food itself is of better quality than what you'd expect in an AYCE buffet and nothing looked too questionable. The raw items are in the center where you can see them making the sushi. They have a decent variety of sashimi options which you don't see often at AYCE places. The fish all start tasting the same though by the time you've gotten to your second round. As for their hot options, I don't think they really had anything too special--just all the standard options. The crawfish and crab legs were pretty overcooked and dry when I was there so my group stuck mainly to the raw items. Overall, for $17, I think this place is good after a long day at the beach where everyone is starving. Sushi, sashimi, pho, ice cream, topping bar, oysters, snow crab legs... what more can you ask for and how else can I rate a place that has ALL my favorite foods for under $20 a person?! I live in Northern Virginia and everytime I come down to VA beach, I come to Yukai. The sashimi is fresh and the ice cream is delicious. I kid you not, from the birthday cake ice cream, to strawberry, to caramel, everything is stellar. I'm also Viet, so it surprised me (in a really good way) that their pho was so yummy! It is not the best I have ever had, but it honestly is better than some restaurants that are solely serving pho. Dang. How can you complain. Dessert, albeit for the fresh fruit and ice cream, is where Yukai loses me. I am not a fan of most of their cakes/cookies/pies/etc but I opt for ice cream and I am happy. -pineapple bun: no pineapple flavor, however it tastes like a good yellow cake 3/5 -tiramisu: texture is strange but flavor is decent 3/5 -strawberry cake: artificial tasting, very off-putting 1.5/5 -cheesecake: omg it tastes like rubber 1/5 -milk bun with egg custard: slightly sweet, the bun is fluffy, comparable to decent Chinese bakeries in NYC 4/5 -sesame ball with red bean: little greasy, but nice crunch and filling is sweet. My other comment is instead of cheap, salty, soy-sauce, it would be better if Yukai used (at least) a medium quality kikoman-flavored soy sauce and served wasabi that tasted like wasabi. This place is AWESOME! Okay so I was in Virginia for a week, and of that week I went to Yukai "Buyfett" 3 times!! Honestly Sushi can be VERY expensive, so an all you can eat sushi buffet for $10.95..?? UM hell YEAH!! Honestly, day number one, I was not impressed. I live in California, where many of our sushi places are very awesome, delicious, and extremely fresh, so I kind of have a picky pallet when it comes to sushi. So day one, the fish just wasn't that fresh, the unagi was kind of over cooked, but I realized the salmon was delicious, and the chinese buffett right next to the sushi buffet was also VERY good. I promised the next time I come I would try some of the sushi's before I stacked em on my plate. Well time number 2 and 3 whole different experience: EVERYTHING was VERY fresh, the salmon was delicious, the unagi was perfect, the albacore was delicious, I mean everything was just on point really good. I've been here a couple of times over the past few years through different functions for work. First off, let me just say that I am not a fan of sushi, so for me, it is always hard for me to really have something that I like. Although this place seems to focus more on sushi, they do have a hibachi grill, as well as Americanized food just behind the sushi area. I did like the hibachi grill, since I could put what I liked into a bowl, and they cook it on the spot, much like Mongolian barbecue, which I have always liked. Now, after eating here that day, I had started to not feel too good. I'm not sure if was something I ate there or not that would have caused the headache. I know I have sensitivity to MSG, so I'm not sure if they have MSG in some of the foods they had on the buffet. My rating is based on the experience I had here based on the foods that I did ear here. What pushed me down from a 3 rating to a 2 rating was due to the service I had when asking some questions to the staff at the buffet bars. All I was trying to do was to find out if certain items had mushrooms in them or not, as I have an allergy to them. The first person I asked acted like I wasn't even there. Next, another person finally came out and I asked them. They finally went to find a manager to finally answer my questions. In all, it took about 10 minutes just to try and get a simple yes or no answer. I always come here because of the variety of foods offered. As buffets go, the quality is better than average. Can you really expect a buffet to compete with a traditional restaurant? I still haven't tried all Yukai has to offer but they have enough good food to satisfy any preference. Three stars due to the fact that this place is relatively cheap and fair value. I believe in "you get what you pay for". The price for lunch here is about $12 for an adult. Not bad for a buffet with sushi. Nothing really special here, typical asian buffet foods. They had about 8 plates of different sushi rolls, 3 plates of thinly sliced Nigiri, and a plate of salmon and red snapper "sashimi" (just cut fish thrown in a pile). They had chilled mussels and cocktail shrimp available. I believe I heard that they have oysters available for dinner which is set at the higher price of course. They have a small Hibachi grill where you can pick out your ingredients and they will grill it for you. It's just fried with oil and water on the hot plate, no seasoning or taste. They also have "Pho". All I have to say about that is that it's not real pho. If you're a Pho lover, stay away from it. For desserts they have a Fondue Fountain. They don't offer much with that though, just marshmallows and cookies. I really like the Icecream machine they offer, has many assorted toppings like in Froyo places. I'm not a buffet fan. Only came here for family. Therefore I personally would not return. But my rating was based off of the price and what was offered. I'd say its a fair deal for a buffet. Some places either before after a lunch or dinner rush have sparse, picked-over supplies. That certainly was not the case here. Also, the service was terrific. I was never wanting for refills or dealing with dirty plates. You'd typically expect a buffet of any cuisine to lack the same quality as something made fresh. With sushi, that's even more compounded. Probably one of the highest priced chinese buffet but with reason. The have the best quality sushi and its all you can eat. The atmosphere is definitely different then any other buffe, its of regular restraunt standards verse fast food versions of most buffets, recently they've been playing nice piano music in the background which makes for nice ambiance. And they have a very nice koi pond / fountain in the front. The ice cream bar has gone down hill though, it used to have a huge variety of toppings now the selection is 1/3 of what it was. read more
