Food options in magnolia are slim, so it's nice to see that there's a sit down sushi place in the neighborhood now! If you've been here before when it was Oliver Twist, you'll know that the space is very small. They've turned the bar into a sushi bar and put the bar with the alcoholic beverages in the back/kitchen... So it is a little unconventional that your drinks are mixed back in the kitchen. The place was packed to the gills when we went on a Saturday evening and you could tell that the severs were having trouble making their way around the small, narrow space - but overall service was good and they were attentive. We came for happy hour so I only had a California roll and some karagee, so don't feel I can truly rate the food that much. It was good and prices looked similar to other sushi places. Mixed drinks are pricey for what they were though.. they also describe themselves are craft cocktails, but we were sitting right next to the kitchen and could see that the guy making our drinks did not know how or what to put in them. We also ordered a well whiskey coke which is supposed to be $1 off but realized when we got home and looked closer at the receipt that they didn't give us the hh price. Overall, will probably come again for some hh sushi, but will probably pass on mixed drinks. read more

I was incredibly disappointed in my experience at Yume. We arrived as a party of 4 and were given the option of waiting 10 minutes for the bar or 20-25 minutes for a table. We opted to wait for the table and informed the server that we'd be waiting outside. We waited for 25 minutes right outside the door. I went back in to check and was told it would be just a bit longer, so I went back outside to wait. After 45 minutes I went inside to see if there was a reasonable expectation to be seated within 5 minutes, as we had been waiting for 20 minutes longer than the estimated wait time. The server informed me that they were cleaning off our table. Great! I grab the rest of my party and we come in to be seated. Then, the server informs us that our table is actually NOT being cleaned, and offers us a seat at the bar. If I had wanted a seat at the bar, I would've accepted the original 10 minute wait time! At this point we decided to dine elsewhere, but were solidly disappointed in our experience with Yume, which is unfortunate, as I was quite excited to dine there. I understand that estimating wait times is tough, but communication with your guests is absolutely vital. Had the server informed us at the 25 minute mark that it would be a much longer wait, then we could've made other plans and not stood in the cold for an additional 20 minutes. It bums me out to give Yume two stars. They have a wonderful happy hour, the staff is very kind and attentive, the food comes quickly. The first time I came here was pretty good - not super high quality, but a nice neighborhood sushi place. The second time was less stellar, but I decided to come back. Tonight was really bad. We got the same sushi we had gotten before. The quality of the fish was definitely not as good as our first two times. The really bad news was that the rice was so undercooked it crunched in your teeth. Not exaggerating - it was hardly cooked at all. Really disappointing. I also found two black hairs in my rolls. I am not at all a snob with this kind of thing. One hair I can deal with, multiple hairs is pretty unacceptable. Overall we left physically not feeling great and were also pretty bummed that a sushi place close to home has already declined so much in the few months it's been open. The atmosphere is really hit or miss. Tonight there were a lot of screaming kids. Not at all their fault, but something you should be prepared for. It's a very small restaurant so when people are being obnoxious it's very noticeable. read more

We popped into the new, quaint, and cozy Yume Sushi on Saturday night. We really liked Oliver's Twist that was previously in this space and we were eager to see what Yume has done. And, if a good sushi place made its way to Magnolia...we would we be in heaven! We weren't disappointed! If you know this space, it's ultra small but they have done a nice job transforming the previous bar into a sushi bar. The menu has a nice selection of appetizers, pieces, and rolls - and they have several specialty rolls that look and taste great! I thought the waitstaff was very friendly and nice, despite being slammed. The sushi was really good. Cocktails, Sapporo on tap, hot sake, and great miso soup. I'm excited to go back for happy hour. Please check this place out - it's small and probably best to come at non-peak days/times. We are thrilled to have this charming little place in Magnolia with great sushi!! read more

We've been here a couple times now. First time was very low key, we sat at the bar, which was great. This most recent time, it was packed! We came in last Saturday at 9pm and ended up closing the place down. Everything we ordered was outstanding, from the pear sake martini to the two rolls, and salmon nigiri. We also ended up buying 3 bottles of the little blue sake, one to drink there and two to take home because it was so good. Excellent service, excellent fresh sushi, excellent drinks. Almost didn't write this review because I don't want too many people grabbing the few tables there are in this new Magnolia sushi joint! As mentioned, the space is small. They don't take reservations. So by 5:30 it is full up. I saw people standing behind the bar eyeing tables. That said, the Happy Hour is killer. $5 chicken karaage that hints at soy-marinated chicken - yum. There's a grilled/fried rice topped with spicy tuna and thin slice of jalapeno and sauce. Another yum. The Magnolia roll, also on Happy Hour, is basically a California roll topped with avocado and tuna. Yume has a decent selection of rolls on the regular menu, as well as the obligatory nigiri sushi and sashimi plates. They have japanese beer, sake, and inexpensive wine. This is my favorite sushi bar by a long shot. It's super fresh, absolutely delicious and inexpensive compared to other places downtown with the same quality and size of rolls. Environment: the small space makes the restaurant has a nice Japanese private sushi house feeling. There are serval seats for waiting customers. I like the homey aspect. Service: friendly staff. I experienced that they sit a couple came later than us first after 30 mins waiting. Moreover, after a long wait ( around 30 mins? ) our food finally came, but they seemed to forget parts of our order. Although we got two free miso soup for the long wait, this is definitely the slowest and unorganized service I experienced at this price range. I would order take out if I ever come back. Taste: Japanese + American fusion style. All sashimi seems reasonably fresh. I recommend to try appetizer and basic rolls: some of their special rolls have too much sauce. Price: I ordered one appetizer, two sashimi, one basic rolls and two special rolls and ended up with around 70 dollars. Yume is a great gem in the small village of Magnolia. It's a small restaurant seating maybe 20 at a time, so be prepared to wait on weekends and nights. They do great rolls with plenty to offer in terms of variety. This is now my go to sushi place due to its location and unpretentious atmosphere.
