What a great little cafe for some delicious Chinese cuisine. They've been in the neighborhood for almost 10 years. Fei, the owner's brother, is always very helpful in picking out their specialties. The place is always clean and well kept. You never have to wait long for your food. The pot stickers were delish and not greasy, like they are served at other places. Fei was so nice to make a few Mu Shu rolls for me, right there at the table. He was always stopping by to see if I needed more tea, water or rolls. I am still amazed at how generous the portions are with such a small bill. A must stop when you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of University Village (less than a mile away). read more

We just ordered Chinese from Yummy Cafe and the food was alright. We ordered chicken fried rice, general tso's chicken and Mongolian beef. Mongolian beef was tender, way too much onions and was ok for 13.95 which is way too expensive. The general tso's chicken was also tasty, as well too expensive 12.95 and the last was chicken fried rice. The chicken was ok as well. Not much taste to the fried rice. Overall the cost with the tips was $45. and to me (2) for lunch is too expensive. I would say the best of all (3) was general tso's chicken. I had much better for Chinese food. read more

I decided to try this place 6 years ago when I moved in the area. I have brought a dear friend here a few times for lunch. I have eaten here alone and even done pick up and home delivery where I would share this food with others. All agree this is a great menu and awesome food. The couple that operate this establishment are both very kind & diligently work to ensure consistency in food and service. I have truly appreciated their efforts and now that I must move away will greatly miss their place and food. We ordered take out . The food order was accurate and done quickly. Unfortunately most of the food was not great. The Mongolian beef and king pao chicken seemed flavorless. My husband did not enjoy his fried rice as he said it didn't seem to have much in it. The sweet and sour pork was good and so were the potstickers although the sauce for the potstickers had a vinegar taste which I didn't enjoy. I don't think we will be back. read more

Pretty good local Chinese restaurant in the Laurelhurst area. Place is really small, and has that "mom and pops" feel to it. Menu was pretty standard when it comes to Chinese food. I tried the Almond Fried Chicken and Chow Mein. Both were decent. Not the best, but good. We've been looking for some good ol' Americanized Chinese cuisine around the area and this place was exactly what we wanted. We tried the Spicy Salt and Pepper Squid and their General Tso's Chicken. The squid was spectacular! The perfect balance of spicy, salty, and fried goodness. The chicken on the other hand was just OK. It was a little sauce heavy and a little sweeter than what I typically like for my General Tso's. The wait staff was very pleasant and kind, and the service was speedy. Yummy Cafe puts the yum in my tum. This is a great local gem with affordable eats. It's not going to be the best Chinese food you've ever eaten, but it's pretty darn good for a neighborhood takeout joint. My go to items from their menu are the three cup chicken with a bowl of rice or their dry fried green beans with garlic. Tip: Try their lunch specials during the week. I believe they serve them from 11-3. You'd be hard pressed to find a better deal in Seattle for the amount of food that you get, all under $10. What a steal in this city! No words can accurately describe how horrendous this food was. My friend and I were recording music in his apartment and needed some sustenance delivered to keep us powering through. Snappy Dragon doesn't open 'till 4, so we decided on Slummy Cafe. Since I had never eaten there before I decided to go with a typically safe dish - broccoli chicken. My friend got kung pao chicken and potstickers. We threw away the entire order of broccoli chicken. Here are some of my buddy's (very accurate) quotes describing the dish: 'It tastes like the smell after someone lights off a firework" "I think someone might have peed on the broccoli." We managed to sort of pick through the kung pao, but it was bland and joyless. The potstickers were literally scary to eat. They made wet gurgling sounds when bit into and would send oil squirting out in all directions. Worst $40 I've ever spent... Save yourself and wait for Snappy Dragon to open. Trust me. read more

There is a time and a place for Americanized Chinese food, right? But even for being Americanized, it still wasn't very good. This place reminded me of the type of restaurant my grandparents would have gone to. The restaurant was clean and the service was prompt. The lunch specials are cheap and they come with soup, egg roll, and rice. The egg drop soup was salty and didn't have any other flavor. I gave my egg roll to my husband and he didn't comment on it. I ordered the veggie lunch plate and the veggies themselves were fine but the sauce was totally bland. The Hong Kong chow mein had a better sauce and it was probably the best thing we had. But it was really nothing amazing. I figured I would update since I have now tried more entrees, actually eaten at the restaurant and used their delivery service. Entrees: PLEASE try the beef with ginger and green onion. It is like the Mongolian beef, but gingery and incredible and addictive. Definitely my favorite entree. The kung pao chicken is also good-- the sauce is spicy, it has real peanuts, and actual large pieces of chicken (not crumbs like Panda Express). Dine-in: Stopped by for a lunch combo one day. They got everything to me incredibly fast and it was a huge amount of food. I know egg rolls are pretty standard, but theirs seemed less greasy than most, which was nice. Lunch combos are super cheap and definitely a great deal for the quality of food. Delivery: I had the bad idea to order delivery the same time a football game was finishing up at the stadium. As a result, the driver got stuck on the other side of 25th (I understand the horror of this) and was way late compared to the estimate. However, they called me several times and kept me updated on the status of our dinner, and were super apologetic, and who HASN'T gotten stuck in Husky game traffic? All is forgiven. I can only review their take-out service which was fast and furious, but in a great - ready to feed my hungry mouth - sort of way. A friend treated us for lunch, and I'm so happy she did because I got to experience their awesomeness and I just couldn't wait to yelp Yummy! First off, I was ecstatic that they offered brown rice. Not too many Chinese restaurants offer this as an option so Yummy earns an extra star just for thinking about the health-conscious folk. They also provide soooo much food for their lunch special at such a low price that I easily had leftovers for dinner. $7 can get you a fantastic entree, egg roll, soup, and choice of brown, white, or fried rice. Yummo! I had the veggie medley in some savory sauce and I was pleasantly surprised at how flavorful everything was. Veggies were tender but not soggy, and the sauce was so good it made me not miss the absent protein. Brown rice was, of course, perfectly steamed, and the hot and sour soup was refreshing, tart, and delicious. I've done take-out once and delivery twice from here and the service is always quick! 20mins(take out) and about 25-35mins (delivery). I'm vegetarian, and what's awesome about his place is that even though there isn't a HUGE (still a nice amount of choices) amount of vegetarian options, they have always been willing to accommodate me by replacing any meat dishes with tofu and/or veggies. This place has beckoned from a distance a number of times over the past couple years as I passed on the Burke-Gilman Trail. The conspicuous display of Chinese orthography made its usual mysterious promises about sweet sauces, tender meats and exotic vegetables prepared in exotic ways that in this case the Yummy Cafe couldn't keep. First of all, getting into the place was treacherous. The wheelchair ramp seems like a perfunctory afterthought. It lets out right next to some landscaping that I would surely fall into if my tire slipped. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen not only for Yummy Cafe but perhaps for the neighboring fire station as well. Right out of the gate the tea was excellent. Among subtle flavors I think I could discern hints of lavender and jasmine. It had just the right level of bitter. The food was pretty bland, however. We had the Dinner for Two which came with orange beef and General Tso's chicken. The beef itself was sub par, the orange sauce was too sweet and not enough orange. The chicken was dry and flavorless and the sauce didn't taste anything like what I was used to. My friend says the bathroom was clean I give this place two stars because of the very gracious and accommodating staff and because I am curious enough to come back and try some other items. read more

Finally went in for lunch Price : Reasonable Atmosphere : Clean with air condition Food Flavor : I order Almonds Fried Chicken it was not up to my par. Breading was very soft at the buttom and color is really dark. It was either old / dirty oil or deep fryer heat is too high. The complimentary soup : Red hot and sour soup. Taste is okay but it was really red. You can tell they put a lot of Sambul chilli. Service : Work by family member so usually a lot better than worker. This was a really disappointing meal. It is very rare that I go to a restaurant and am actively not interested in eating all of the food that I order, but this was sadly the case here. You would think that it would be hard to mess up Wonton Soup, but somehow they managed to do it. Even from just looking at it, I could tell that something was wrong. The normally pale-yellow broth of Wonton Soup was a dark brown - it looked like beef broth. It tasted far too salty, and was quite unpleasant to eat (hence why I left more than half of it in the bowl). The wontons themselves had a weird texture, almost crunchy, as though the meat in them was fatty. There was also unexpectedly shrimp in the wontons, which had not been noted on the menu; this could have been quite dangerous for people with seafood allergies. I was hoping that the potstickers would be more redeeming than the soup, but sadly they were not. The postickers themselves were not actively offensive. Granted, the wrappers were pretty thick, like what is easy to make at home - I would expect something better at a restaurant - but it was not bad. What was AWFUL, however, was the sauce for the potstickers. It tasted like vinegar! Whatever other ingredients had been included in the sauce were so overpowered by the vinegar flavoring that it was impossible to eat. We just took the potstickers home, knowing that we could make a much better sauce on our own. Finally, we had the General Tso's Chicken. This was not actively offensive as the soup and potsticker sauce had been, but I was still not impressed. The chicken was not crispy as it so often is in other places; it was not anything special. And by that time, I was so unsatisfied with the food that I was not interested in eating anything else mediocre. The only good things that I can think of: - The portions of soup were pretty generous - if only the soup had actually been good! - There was nothing wrong with the rice. - They brought us tea without our needing to ask (though I forgot to check if it was included on the bill, I was just so interested in leaving). - The broccoli with the General Tso's Chicken was not overcooked. It is especially disappointing because it is perfectly possible for there to be cheap Chinese restaurants with good (or at least acceptable) food for a great price. The food here was not only actively not good, but cost more than food at cheaper, better Chinese restaurants would. Dang, I thought I would be the first to review this. I see that I'm not the only fan. Great grub, service, generous portions and very clean surroundings. It does a very brisk take out service, but sometimes its nice to just sit down and get served. My parents, moderately picky eaters, my TH and my brother all like this place and finding somewhere that suits all of us is amazing and the Yummy Cafe fits the bill. I have to believe that either we had a 1:1000 dining experience or some people are way over-zealous with their stars. Well below average. Ordered take out and will not be going back. Food was flavorless. Szechuan beef had no spice and was bland as can be. Kung pao chicken was equally disappointing the surmounted to an undesirable dish. Way too many vegetables in the mix too. The quality of the meat here is atrocious. Beef tasted like chicken and had a very unusual consistency - almost squishy. Chicken was clearly processed and not solid breast meat. Also had fried rice, which should always be decent, but was very plain and unfortunately used the same awful meats. There is authentic Chinese food, food geared towards the American palate, and then whatever the hell this was. Please make the drive to go somewhere else. read more

This is a little different than Snappy Dragon, more traditional American Chinese Food. You get everything that Snappy Dragon does not serve. Egg Foo Young, and all your favorite dishes. The prices are great, a little cheaper than Snappy, and when I don't feel like the dishes that Snappy serves, then I go here and I was happy to see it reviewed. Great Chinese food restaurant. Located right next to the Metropolitan Market so it's perfect if you decided to take-out. Shop at the Market while you wait your food and pick up your food after you are done with shopping. The menu is huge to choose from, including vegetarian option. Their price is set a little bit high. ranging from $10-14 average. But I guess they give you a good amount of food to eat so if you order two, that's plenty for two people. If you are eating-in, the place is small so the seating is limited and the place gets crowded w people during dinner time. Also, they don't really have any parking space. so you have to find a street parking or (park at Metropolitan Market, park at your own risk..) Seattle has no shortage of Chinese restaurants, but you will be hard pressed to remember many by name let alone be in a hurry to return I got a place for Mongolian Chicken, another for Mongolian Beef and another for Almond Chicken. You end up going from place to place to piece together a meal, because no one spot appears to be able to do an entire menu well. This was my 1st trip to Yummy Café and I have to say, after eating here, it's obvious why the Asian people bow to each other. This was so remarkably amazing that I am going to return as soon as possible. The hot and sour soup was fragrant and flavorful. The Potstickers were thick, rich and hearty and the 5 star Mongolian beef had a zesty kick that let you know these folks aren't changing their recipe for the westernized world. The spot isn't big enough for you to hold an event and parking is pretty much a nightmare, but I promise you this, you will not regret putting something Yummy in your tummy!
