I've heard good things about Zankou, and finally got the chance to try this place out... it did not dissapoint!!!! Chicken kabob plate and luleh beef plate were really good, and great choices for first timers. They were full of flavor and really juicy. Price is around $12-14, which might sound pricey, but i think is reasonable considering Mediterranean food and the quality of the meats. read more

I'm only giving these guys 2 stars because their food is actually good, most everything else important to people this day and age sucks, but the food is good. My biggest complaint is the portions and the price. I'm going to agree with Jon S. and say that they do over charge compared to other comparable Armenian restaurants and they give you far less food. As if that's not bad enough, the owner has a newspaper article posted in the dining area that talks about how they give people "Generous" portions for a very "Reasonable" price. I don't know who considers a wrap with a single piece of Luleh and some tahini at $6 a big portion at a reasonable price. I love zankou chicken from their pasadena location, after trying the montebello location several times now, I can say,their chicken seems dried out compared to pasadena or the one time I ate at their glendale location. Note, I only order the chicken plates. Also, the montebello location seems dark and small...clean of ciurse, but just not comfotable, imo. If ur into this type of chicken in the area, try ani's chicken down the street near the beverly blvd, montebello blvd intersection ...less than 1/2 mile. I've been a Zankou patron for about the last 12 years or so, and this was the worst food and customer service I've ever received and a Zankou establishment. I've been to the Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, and Anaheim locations and and have always received exelent service, and food. I decided to visit the Montebello location for the first time with a friend. The store was completely empty at 8 PM, so while being the only customers there, there is no excuse for the horrible service we received. My friend's order of Falafel was grayish in color and cold, my Beef Shawerma wrap was compleyely disgusting. The bread looked like it came from the garbage. A strip of bread was torn from the middle of the pita, shawerma was added over it and then covered with the strip of bread that was torn out. We never return food, but we did this time, and I was told that I "opened the sandwich wrapper wrong". So either cook is right, and every other Zankou I've eaten at for over a decade has been making their food wrong. (I fail to see how the unwrapping of the foil wrapper justifies torn bread from inside the pita, while the outside isn't torn?) And the arrogance of the cook to tell me I'm wrong about my own culture's food is shocking. They remade my sandwich (which was still subpar) & they also made my friend new falafel plate, with subpar flafel, old brittle pita, and watery tahina. We were the only customers when we walked in to order, so there is no excuse for the poor quality we received that night. Zankou needs to re-evaluate their staff training for that particular store, they've lost any future business from us. I love Zankou, and I hate to see them let that sort of thing happen. If I didn't care I wouldn't have posted a review. However, I do recommend that anyone reading this go to any other Zankou if you want better service than what we received in Montebello. read more

I hadn't had a chance to visit the Montebello location until yesterday, even though I've always wanted to try Zankou Chicken. It looks very small from the outside and it's kinda easy to miss. Inside it's very clean and spacious. The girl that took my order was really nice and let me substitute the rice for extra hummus yay! I took the food to-go and it was delicious. I had the chicken kebab and my fiance got the beef. He said his was good but not as good as others he's had. My reason for the 4 stars vs. 5 was the price. It came out to $24. I know most of you will think that's not much but that was a lot for me. Unfortunately for me, I liked their chicken way too much. I'll definitely be back. read more

Great Shawarma and humus! We have been here a few times and always have a good dinner here. We usually share the beef shawarma plate as it is enough for 2 people to share with extra turnips and pitas. Staff is always friendly and will give you extra pitas warmed in the oven. Meat is always lean and very tasty. I am not a garlic fan and always order food without garlic sauce..I think garlic is overrated!. Sharing the shawarma plate is a better deal than ordering two wraps. Next time I will try the roasted chicken and falafels. read more

I had the beef kabab. I wanted something I have not tried so this place was it.........close too as I didn't want to drive far to eat something good. Only bad thing was that my meal was like ten dollars but it was enough to feed two. The beef is filet minon, the flat bread is really good as is the pickled veggi salad, rice etc. All very fresh ingredients. The service I was expecting was not the service I recieved. The girl behind the counter was welcoming not like every other place around montebello where they just don't care about the job. I waited not too long for my order as there were a few peoples orders coming up no big deal. They keep this place spotless and neat. I will defenitely be coming back here. Man this place is BOMB! You can get a whole chicken, a tub of garlic spread, hummus, pita bread, yellow chilies for all under $20! Their whole chicken is so moist and flavorful! Stuff it in the pita bread, spread some garlic and hummus onto that bad boy and you got yourself one bomb ass concoction. Oh, and bite into that yellow chili for some kick! Definitely must get their garlic spread and hummus to try with their pita bread and chicken. You would think the garlic spread is really overwhelming and will overpower everything, but the spread is so creamy and light and it goes really well with the chicken and pita. Locals are always ranting and raving about this little Middle Eastern food establishment. Always willing to try something new, I figured, "Why not?" Came here on a weekday afternoon right in the middle of the lunch rush. It wasn't so busy that it would deter my business, but it was still pretty busy that there was a bit of a wait to put our order in. First thing that I should mention is that their prices to seem to be a bit on the upper end of the typical plate lunch spectrum. Expect to pay more than $15 for a plate and a beverage. That aside, they do have a decent variety of offerings while keeping their menu simple. The food itself is good. It's prepared fresh when you order, hence why one may wait 10+ minutes or more when it's busy. I've stuck to the beef kabobs each time and haven't been disappointed. The servings on the plates are plentiful and filling, so it's not unheard of to save a pita bread and a kabob for later. The service is quick and friendly, but won't bat an eye to simply take your money and move along when it's busy. And yes, the garlic spread is quite delicious, but use it wisely, as it's quite ... garlic-y! TL;DR: Delicious food, and plenty of it. Finally got a chance to try this location, and I am a fan! I came at an odd hour, so there was plenty of parking and only a couple other people in line. The girls on register were so friendly! Bonus points for this business, because we all know how rare it is to find friendly humans in customer service these days. Used to love this place, however, they basically don't take phone orders for kebabs because they've been ripped off too many times. Not my problem. Don't insult and inconvenience your paying customers by essentially denying phone orders (they did allow me the option of paying over the phone, which is more time than I'm willing to devote for a phone order and not at all helpful if I'm paying cash). YUM! So far I've tried one of the Chicken Plates and the Falafel Wrap. Both have been good! If you're vegetarian the Falafel is really good! I went for lunch and its semi busy during lunch hour. It's a good place to just take a break and chit chat what not. Yesterday, I had the Falafel Wrap. Along with that you also get Pickled Radishes, which is also not so bad. If you are feeling really hungry I've gotten one of the plates where you get pita bread as well as sides. The plates between $7-9, while the wrap ranges from maybe $4-6. I don't eat Mediterranean food all the time so I can't say this is like the best I've tried but from the 2 times I've been there it's been pretty good. read more

Kinda dry, even with the garlic sauce. The chicken was tender and juicy, so nothing wrong there, but honestly Costco rotisserie chicken is just as good, eek! My love for zankou chicken is limitless. I prefer this location over the Pasadena one ( which is the only other location I have visited. Can't comment on the others). First, THE GARLIC SPREAD!!! OMG THAT FUCKING SPREAD IS ADDICTING! My boyfriend stops their on his way to my house just to get me some garlic spread. I am hooked. The chicken is pretty tasty. Not too dry and not overly cooked. I love how much rice and hummus they serve you. I am always full when I leave this place. The chicken shwarma is pretty great as well. I was not too impressed with the beef shwarma but it was still tasty. I've had better but not this close to where I live. So I really don't mind it. The service is usually pretty quick. When I phone in an order it's always on time and they never forget anything. I prefer Zankou over Amir's falafel. read more

I used to go to the food stand inside the Montebello mall when I would crave Mediterranean food but after finding Zankou-This is hands down the city of Montebello hidden gem. There chicken kab was great and delicious. The hummus was on point and so was the baklava!
