First time here and was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant looked clean and well maintained. Ordered the chicken kabob plate which came out right off the grill with fresh ingredients. Mediterranean food is pretty high on my list of favorites... Love me some chicken and garlic spread! This is some of the best rotisserie chicken in the business (for a chain). I eat this chicken skin and all. In fact, I luv to slather the very garlicky spread all over the skin. The chicken is always moist and juicy, and the seasoning packs enough flavor without being overpowering. Good shawarma pita sandwiches on top of the chicken and garlic spread. I think I've tried it all (been to 4 locations over the years - Hollyweird, Pasadena, SFV, and this location). Must haves: ~garlic spread (next time I'm buying a separate container to go!) ~shawarma pita sandwiches (beef & chicken - both good) ~1/4 chicken combo plate which comes with a rotisserie chicken, hummus, garlic spread, pickled radish, salad, and rice. Quick Tips! 1. Located in a plaza next to a CVS. 2. I can't think of another positive point to talk about. I am at a loss for words for this restaurant. It seems as if they are trading on Zankou's good name instead of actually being a Zankou's restaurant. When we arrived in Zankou, we were really pleased to see that it seemed very clean and well organized. Our order taker was friendly and very nice. Here is where everything took a turn for the worse. Everything here is overpriced, and very obviously so. On the main website for all the restaurants, there is mention of a family meal deal, this family meal deal was very different here costing upwards of $29.99 for a whole chicken, two large sides, garlic spread, bag of pitas, and a box of rice. This is opposed to the family meal deal in Pasadena where you get a whole chicken, two large sides, bag of pitas, and garlic spread for $18.99. Yes, that's right a whole $11.00 difference between two locations. Now, it would be forgivable (maybe) if the food was just as good as the Pasadena location. We ended up ordering a whole chicken, a large hummus, and a tahini salad. The "large" hummus here is actually two of the small tins put together very unlike the Pasadena location where the hummus has its own dedicated large tin. The tahini salad here uses the tin that the large hummus uses in Pasadena. At almost $4.00 though, the tahini salad seemed to be the biggest ripoff as it was tiny, but soaked in sauce. Maybe it was because we arrived at 5:00 PM or something, but the chicken was very, very, very obviously sitting in a warmer for a few hours. The skin was not ultra crispy like in the Zankou's in Pasadena. It was very mushy and felt very fatty despite being served chopped off the spit. The hummus tasted the same as it always does from Zankou, but we were left wondering why they didn't have a large tin if they advertise a large size. As for service, here is what I observed during our time in the restaurant. They keep their rice out in the open to scoop and the floor around that area is covered with bits of rice. While the service people were nice enough, they did get in a minor argument with a customer who thought that ordering a combo meant that he also got a drink. In general, this was the worst experience that I've had with Zankou Chicken. The price, the food, and everything else seemed like it was such a bad value. I will stick with going to the Pasadena location and looking for other options. I hope that you still have the time to try this place out despite my review! read more

I wasn't sure if this place was open; we were actually going to head to Crabbies next door (also a good choice). This location is REALLY new. As in opened 3 days ago, and is spotless. it's really clean, and the food is pretty damn good. I've never been to a Zankou Chicken before this, but I'd heard good things, despite it being a chain. I'm no mediterranean food connoisseur, but I liked this. I ordered the quarter chicken with dark meat - this was more than enough food. I'm glad I didn't get the half-order chicken. It comes with a garlic spread, salad, pita and hummus. The hummus is fresh and good, the pita was soft and tasty. I was wondering what all the hype surrounding Zankou was about and now I know! My friend has been waiting for this new location to open with baited breath. She was astonished that I had never been to a ZC. We met for lunch today and she helped me order. I got their Tarna Chicken Plate and was 1) shocked at how quickly it was ready and 2) immediately in love. The garlic spread, the sesame sauce, the pickled turnips, the hummus, and of course, the chicken! After my first bite I felt like Carrie in SATC... "Hello lover." I was also ecstatic to see that they have my black tea dispenser. Everything tasted very fresh and being a hungry tyke, I still only ate about 1/2 of it. My mom was lucky that she got the rest. Even she enjoyed the leftovers. Some may say that it's a bit pricey. But I paid $9 for my plate and got, essentially, two meals out of it. Not bad! I will definitely make this a new grubbing spot. I've had the 1/2 chicken twice from this place and the hummus is good but the chicken needs some serious work. I haven't been to the other Zankou's so I can't compare but I find it hard to believe that this place is anything similar after reading the reviews. The chicken was as dry a cardboard. I love the garlic paste they have here. It goes amazing with the plates. My favorite is the beef Shawerma plates. You can buy the garlic in larger sizes here too. The few times I've been here have been positive experiences but the last time I got food the side vegetables they gave me had an insane amount of onions with the ratio of side vegetables being 70% onions. It looks like they cut up a full onion and threw it in my order. But there was a lot of meat placed into my order too. They were quick with my order and had it ready within 5 minutes. read more

But the portion was very small. Beef was very dry. For $7 bucks I would expect it to come with salad or humus but it just came like that. I've been coming here for years and they have gone from 4 stars to 2 stars. The service has deteriorated dramatically and the quality of the food is going down the drain. I usually buy the family pack that comes with a whole chicken, tabulleh, hummus, garlic spread, pickled turnips, and pita bread. The sides are still great but the chicken lately has not been up to par. The chicken has been dry, old, and it seems to be sitting there for a while. I've been very disappointed with the service. On my last visit I told the girl at the counter if I could have one of the fresh rotisserie chickens and she didn't even acknowledge me. Ok so I have been to 2 different Zankou Chicken's other than this one. And just like a person who asks do you want to hear the good part first or the bad part, if you really need to ask... I'll start with the good stuff because I need to elaborate with the bad stuff. Good: The location looks really nice. -- Ok I'm done with the good stuff Bad: Their chicken is much more dry than the Pasadena and Anaheim locations. Zankou is supposed to be really juicy, even the breast. They give you less garlic sauce. Usually the other locations have a sealed prepackaged garlic sauce that needs its foil to be peeled off. This location packs it them selves in a smaller serving. The hummus seems off here, it doesn't have that extra something I taste at the other locations. All in all, I wouldn't even call this place Zankou Chicken. I call SHENANIGANS because they are imposters or something. If you are trying Zankou for the first time, go to the other locations like Pasadena or Anaheim. At least I know they are the real Zankou Chickens. read more

Went in today to grab some takeout for my honey. The girl working the counter was less than welcoming. She acted as if I was putting her out. There was only one other table eating in. After I placed my order she just handed my change and walked to the back. Ok.....so I decided she had things to do. Saw her chatting with the cook; all smiles. The food was finally done and no one calls us. I just assumed it was ours since no one else was around. Went up to grab the food and she had $hit face. Went to lunch here with a coworker and I ordered the salad. Big mistake!! For the price that I had to pay, it was not worth it. You can add chicken to the salad, but it didn't do justice... AND it cost more if you add chicken! The dressing is just olive oil with no additional flavor. So I had to get some lemon to add to my salad just to add flavor. Praise chicken-loving Allah, Zankou' is finally open! I know many of us saw the sign and gasped like Marilyn Monroe. I was so excited when I found out they were opening the 7th of July, though I didn't make it down there until July 11. Everything you would expect from the awesome chain, crispy-skin chicken, delicious Basmati rice, and the coldest, creamiest hummus this side of the Mediterranean. A little bit on the high side for price, but the garlic sauce kinda makes up for it. I've been here multiple times - each time, the food has not disappointed. Because they prepare the meal as you order, I have gotten in the habit of calling ahead and ordering. That way, it's just a quick stop and, in turn, I get chicken and garlic sauce in my belly asap. The chicken is always tender and perfectly seasoned. The rice is to die for. We always order an extra side of rice. (Hello my dear friend, carbs!) We can't forget about the garlic sauce - very garlicky, but oh so good. Just as an FYI, the garlic sauce lingers a little bit - so be wary of your surroundings if you have a post-lunch/dinner belch. Awkward. In my opinion, you get the most bang for your buck with the family meals. One family meal can usually feed my parents, myself, my older brother, and my 21-year old cousin (who, I swear, has a hollow leg.) This meal costs a couple dollars more than ordering 2 plate dinners. My only qualms with Zankou would be the not-so-low prices and the random super-charred tomato in the chicken kebab plate. It's 2013, if you're serving shawerma sandwiches on pita bread you're doing it wrong. morally. authentic places use their own made bread, not some pre-packaged pita that crumbles as you're eating it. and the $6.29 sandwich was small. like, one half of fit in my palm. its not horrible, but god damn it, do it right. ps- clean place, service was normal. but I wont come back Try it, you might like it. good luck! read more

Zankou!!! What happened? So disappointing! I knew I was going to be in the neighborhood so I was locked and loaded that I was going to grab something to eat from here once I was done with my errands. After three hours of running around I thought I was on my way to a delicious meal....wrong. I get there around 8:40. Ok, I know its late. I walk in and its pretty full. Cool. But once I face the counter I see that behind the cashier the burners are off. My heart skips a beat--Oh no. I ask the cashier if they still had full menu available and she said, "everything but the kabobs"...WTF???? that's what I came in for!! No shish kabob, lule kabob, or chicken kabob?? Ok, I thought don't panic. I didn't come in for rotisserie chicken (I can get that at Vons) so my options were LI-MI-TED. I ordered a chicken tarna wrap and a 16 oz side of rice. I get ringed up and its like $11. I look up a the board and notice my little 16 oz of rice was $4!! $4 bucks for white rice?!!! Geez. Didn't want to make a big deal so I just sat down and waited for my order to be ready. (I should have ordered the tarna plate and gotten a full meal for my money.) The knuckle head at the counter could have suggested this-- but her mind was on closing up for the night. Here is where I will take responsibility for my mistake...I ordered to go. Five minutes go by and my order is ready. Get in my car and haul a#$ to get home because I am starving. I take out my tarna wrap that I have been anxiously craving and waiting to eat and I think BS!! This thing was a joke.. I got cheated on my chicken and got cheated on my garlic spread--got plenty of tomatoes, though. WTF no lettuce, no sauce...nothing. I was on my way to the HD store in Montebello when I saw this place. I mentally recorded its location and stopped by on the way back. I had no idea they had one here. Its located in the plaza behind CVS with plenty of parking. Its probably as good as the ones I had in Glendale and Burbank but I still prefer Glendale since that's where I originally got hooked on Zankou's Chicken as an intern. As an intern, I didn't mind driving off to Zankou's to get lunch for everybody. Hey, I got paid for getting good food and not working! The only qualm I have about this place is that you have to pay extra for everything if you don't buy one of their dishes. They have some neat Family packages or party packages for you to select from. I finally tried their falafel. It was tasty but cold. It was pretty good paired with pita bread, salad, tahini sauce, garlic sauce, and salad. As for dryness is concerned, our chicken was very moist. I came here today for lunch because it's close and I've been craving Mediterranean food. I love Open Sesame in Long Beach, Casablanca in Claremont and Soro's in Temecula, but those places aren't in Montebello so I tried Zankou Chicken. What's dissatisfying is that I'd had it before at the Pasadena location and I enjoyed it. Today, it was just poorly prepared. I was looking at the menu and was craving Chicken Shawarma (?spelling?). The girl said that Chicken Tarna is the same thing so I trusted her and ordered it. When I took it back to the office and started eating it I noticed that it was all over the place. There were pieces of lettuce in my hummus, the chicken was half in the sauce and half in its own tray. It look like it was just thrown together. When I finally bit into my food it was soggy and the chicken still had some bones and cartilage on it. Some pieces were really dry and tasted almost powder-like while the other pieces tasted undercooked. What's worse, it didn't taste like any chicken shawarma (?spelling?) I've ever had. I would have totally ordered something else if I knew. Now I feel sicky to my tummy and I hate that feeling. IDK If I'll come back here! read more

My wife and I were NOT satisfied at all. We both ordered the Chicken Kabob Plate. I'm just gonna say that we will NEVER order from here again. The beets tasted like they had been sitting in the container too long; rice was dry; chicken was mediocre. Hummus was ok. The only good thing on my plate was the Garlic sauce. We usually go to the "Mediterranean Terrace " in La Habra. Being that we moved, its further from us. But, we rather drive TEN miles for some great-tasting Chicken Kebab plates than under ONE mile.
