I go to a lot of teriyaki lunch spots and will say that when you order a yakisoba plate, you expect all yakisoba noodles as the starch, not half yakisoba, half rice......that was strange to me but I think it's a way for them to cut costs and provide less noodles. I decided to stop by and pick up dinner on my way home from work. The one other time I was here I spent over $20.00 and it wasn't the best but I thought I would give it another chance. Spent about the same but asked for an additional teriyaki sauce with my teriyaki chicken bowl. I later realized I was charged for 4 sauces and asked when I picked up my order why, but got a shoulder shrug and the lady walked away. Like many of the other reviews, the chicken was thin and dry and not worth it. The salad was slimy and browning. The customer service was meh. The food was mostly disappointing. Normally I am pretty forgiving when it comes with food especially with the affordable lunch! But my goodness this place is pretty terrible on all levels. Food- I ordered the kungpao chicken, (what was I thinking ordering that lol) the chicken comes out sweet & sour, countable 4 pieces of peanuts. realistically really salty. The portions are pretty small definitely not worth $16. Can't get full off of that one plate lol. Services- terrible will be an understatement, the lady works there obviously does not want to be there working, I asked a question, got a rude answer, I said thank you many times, no response from her whatsoever, no smile, no how is your day. Cold shoulder all around, slammed my plate down on my table almost got spilled all over the table. A rather scaly experience. Food was good - straightforward, nothing special. There was nobody here at 4:00 PM on a Friday. The restaurant itself is rather forbidding. Plexiglass over the cash register, like a hold up is in the offing. Rather strange. Dirty dishes in the busing station and no towels in the restroom. Fantastically unfriendly - or should I say dismissive - staff. But I was ready to be alone and the food filled me up. I guess that's the best I can say of the experience. Food is good, especially the fried rice is a notch above your normal fried rice like you'd get at Panda Express. But they have a problem with keeping their hours as posted. Showed up at half after 7 or so today and they'd already locked the door, despite the fact their hours showed them as open until 8. Showed up on a Saturday at 6 and they were closed as well. We used to go to this place years ago so decided to pick up dinner since I was nearby. Ordered 2 teriyaki chicken breast meals (T2) and had to order a side of vegetables (the typical veggies that other places usually provide - cabbage, carrots, broccoli) as this meal doesn't come with any. Spent $30.00 for very dried chicken (doesn't matter how much they give you, dried chicken is still dried chicken), not enough Teriyaki sauce as you only get 1 little plastic cup with your meal (but you can buy additinal little plastic cups of the sauce for 50 cents each - which we did not do), lettuce in the salad you have to pick through and remove the yucky pieces. I do really like the taste of the dressing but they never give you enough in my opinion. But hey, you can buy more. We personally will not be dining at this restaurant again. read more

Sadly I have to report that my dinner from here last night was not delicious. I did not see any cooks at the grill when we arrived to pick up our takeout. I think given how hard, dry, and just plain old tasting my chicken was, it had been cooked previously and warmed in the microwave. It was not juicy and delicious. The teriyaki sauce definitely tasted straight from the bottle, the rice was a bit pasty and the salad was full of white iceberg chunks. Meh. My daughter liked her tofu. I didnt taste it. It was deep fried and perhaps freshly cooked, although to be honest she typically likes ANY tofu. I don't think we will be back. There is plenty of better teriyaki around and even Trader Joes has big tasty bags of it in their frozen section for less money if we get really desperate. read more

The replacement of Yaki Day and I am still glad the food is good. The prices seem a bit high in some cases but overall decent fare. The standard teriyaki chicken with white rice and salad is $5.99. Ask for brown rice and it's only .50 cents more. Ask for white only chicken and the price goes up a bit. The spicy chicken (T8) is so far my fave. A bit heavy on the oil, but the flavor is good....just enough spice, and yummy veggies cooked in with it. Another surprise at Zen is that they also have other offerings like General Tso's, Brocolli Beef, Kung Pao Chicken, etc. The yakosoba and Ramen looked quite good as well. It was a little pricier than I expected because of the drink cost but I know it must be hard for a small business owner. The lady that helped us seemed like she might be the owner and she was so nice and welcoming she made me want to come back. I have a weak spot for cheap takeout teriyaki lunches. I placed my other. It was under $8 and was given a number to be called. My order was ready in less than 7-8 min at noon on a Wednesday. I had the (T1) the basic teriyaki with rice and salad. First the salad is your basic iceberg with a few carrots bits. It was very large and crisp. The dressing was nice and creamy with a sweet and sour tang to it. It's a nice foil to the teriyaki. The chicken was plentiful and more than I can eat in one setting. Good flavor, no fat, a bit of char to round it out. The sauce is a med thickness and not overly sweet. The only fault I can find is I would have liked a bit more rice. If I had another scoop or each scoop was larger it would easily make two meals for me with the chicken. As a nice bonus if you dine in there is free miso soup to enjoy. read more

Welp, that's some good salad. It had real lettuce! Been awhile since I've seen that. The kinks do need to be worked out here - SLOW. The lady taking our order seemed to have some sort of ADD - she took my boy's order and then wandered off to do something else before taking mine. Then, as my card was being run, she wandered off AGAIN. Plus it probably took 15 minutes to get our food. This place is good to grab a quick bite but don't expect anything extraordinary. The portions are big so I actually had enough to make two meals out of my chicken breast teriyaki dish. My biggest complaint here is that the bowls they gave for the miso soup smelled like detergent. I don't know if they just didn't rinse well or if the plastic was cheap and absorbs the smells more. My girlfriend and I went here for a last minute date night. We live at the apartments nearby, so it was a short walk. When we arrived, I immediately saw the big pot of miso soup- free to dine-in customers only. I got excited about that, unfortunately my girlfriend isn't a soup fan. That's okay though, I ate enough for both of us. I was a bit sad that there wasn't more tofu in it. I easily had 4 bowls and got no tofu at all in the first 3. The 4th bowl I got a few small cubes of tofu, but the broth itself was very nice. Not too salty and had a ton of flavor. I ordered the tofu yakisoba which was huge! A little sweet for my taste, but I really enjoyed how the tofu and veggies were cooked. It came with a side of rice served right next to the noodles which somewhat made the plate look half empty, but the rice was cooked perfectly. There's nothing worse than undercooked rice! My girlfriend ordered the #2 combo which was chicken, beef, rice, and pot stickers with a side salad. She LOVED the dressing on the salad and raved about the pot stickers. She said it was 'like a perfect dish' but preferred the chicken over the beef. Our two dishes only cost a little over $16 and we left happy and full. The staff was also very friendly and our meal was served to us very quickly! We will definitely return and probably will become regulars. I should also note that the bathroom was very clean. I ordered vegetable fried rice two months ago TO-GO and it was perfect to serve at dinner to accompany our chicken. Today I ordered it again, and its burnt. I could smell the burnt when I was driving home with it but I had to get home so no time to go back and inside and discuss it. The place is busy and they are super nice. They do make some dishes a little different than others places, the kung pao chicken is my husband favorite, here has veggies and more spicy. Here it's my favorite and he won't get it. I don't ever write reviews but this establishments numerous occurrences inspired me. Lets start with the good. The food itself is fine. Overpriced and not amazing but fine. (chicken breast instead of thighs is a $2 premium seems a little steep for a total of $13-$14 for a combo) And now for the bad. The middle aged women who I have encountered at the front counter multiple times couldn't be more abrasive if she tried. Keep in mind this is all in the middle of the COVID 19 pandemic where restaurants are struggling.. 1) She couldn't be less friendly while greeting customers. I have never seen this lady smile or look like anything less than "I hate my life and every customer who comes in here." She wouldn't survive 5 seconds as a Walmart greeter or in any customer service capacity. Every sentence is abrupt and as though it physically pains her to speak to customers or have human interaction. It feels a lot like "give me your money and leave." 2) There have been numerous times that we have tried calling 30 min prior to closing, to place a to go order and not gotten through. We decided to drive there to place an order in person only to find the restaurant closed despite still being within the posted hours of operations. 3) Our last encounter I ordered a "teriyaki chicken and beef combination with white rice and no veggies" verbatim and the lady berated me for not being clear on the phone because she thought I wanted two separate entrees. I believe that "the customer is always right" isn't a true statement, but she is losing the life time value of a customer, and it has nothing to do with the food. 4) I have asked to use the teriyaki bottle to add sauce to my food, which I guess isn't allowed during these times (which I can accept) so instead I ask for additional miniature sauce cups. She acts as though I'm making a ridiculous request and scoffs and couldn't be more reluctant to please a paying customer. She will give you one at a time and acts more and more outraged as I continue to ask for more. The bottom line is this establishment doesn't appreciate their customers. Period. This lady has a serious attitude problem and should work in a warehouse far away from other humans (or at least customers). Support a more deserving and grateful restaurant. read more

A bit improved since my last visit back in June 2012! For my subsequent visit, I ordered "T-8: Hot & Spicy Chicken Teriyaki" ($7.85) which comes with a side of salad and two scoops of white rice. The hot and spicy chicken teriyaki was decently cooked, but I was quite amazed by how much onions there was used for the dish. I'm not sure if "hot and spicy" means "lots of onions" ......... *scratches head* Nonetheless, I could have cared less for a whole shredded onion thing involved with the dish. In addition, I don't remember "teriyaki" -anything having any onions......... I'm just sayin'. And one more note: I was not too fond of the oily sauce the chicken came in. I guess it was from all the onion grease it was cooked with. My chicken cutlet pieces were swimming in a pool of oil. (NO BUENO!) From my last visit with the spicy pork, the pork was swimming in a bed of oil too. I'm not sure if I would order this dish again, nor recommend it. *my lightbulb goes on* Maybe I should try something out of their "Hot & Spicy [insert protein here]" since it's just too oily for my taste........... I'm probably ordering the wrong things here, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND STAYING AWAY from the Hot and Spicy items since it's drenched in OIL and TOO MUCH ONIONS TO PROTEIN RATIO! Unless you're into that stuff, then go for it. Employees were nice and this time it was pretty dead when I came to visit. The cooks were wearing aprons and "sanitary hats" and the woman behind the counter stayed in her area and didn't mess with the grub. While it's not my old standard - Yaki Day - that ZT replaced, it'll do. The inside is pretty much the same - I guess no need to redecorate if you're changing from one teriyaki place to another. Food wise there's the typical combo & plate options and some different items that aren't so typical like General Tso's. I'd say overall having tried to the pork and chicken, I'd go with the chicken. It does have some of those gross fatty bits here and there but it's well cooked and the sauce is spot on. Plus they have it at the table so you can down it to your delight. Many of the combo plates also have salad with a sauce I can't describe - but my girlfriend usually steals my portion too so it's pretty good. I'm not a salad guy so...I don't eat it. There's a few not so awesomeness - well, mainly service. The lady who has taken our order always seems distracted and the food takes longer than you'd expect to come out.
