the taurus was making terrifying sounds, so i brought it into zepeda on saturday. after an inspection on the same day (took about an hour, so i probably should have waited at streetside), carlos (the manager) explained that i needed to have all of my brake pads replaced, as well as the wheel cylinders, that that was unusual for a car with only 20,000 miles on it, and that it might have been because my 90 year old grandma who gave it to me drove with two feet (which wears down the brakes). he gave me a very reasonable quote, plus a discount on labor for being referred to him by a friend and told me to pick up my car on monday. as promised, the taurus was ready and raring to go on monday replete with new high-quality brakes and 6 month or 6000 mile warranty. carlos even showed me all the old chewed up bits that he replaced before sending me on my way. bottom line: zepeda is a professional auto repair shop where you get honest, reasonable quotes and your car gets fixed FAST with QUALITY products. highly recommended. read more

My third review of Zepeda, and I have to knock them down another two stars. The Zepeda mechanic apparently didn't perform an alignment (which is required) after replacing my Volvo's tie-rods, and this caused accelerated wear on the inside of both front tires. The mechanics who just looked at the tires said they were in such bad shape, it was a wonder that they hadn't blown out yet. They didn't think that Zepeda could have made any effort made to align the wheels, and that basically destroyed my tires, which were only about two years old. Stay away! read more

A friend referred me here. His go-to recommendation for his lady friends that have car trouble. Spoke on the phone. I have an older car that I was looking to sell, but it needed some maintenance before I put it on the market. Cautious not to spend too much money. I think his name is Carlos and the other David, were very kind, honest, and fit me in last minute. After a very thorough inspection, he gave me a consultation over the phone and in just a couple of hours I was picking it up. It's also worth noting. I had a dent with some red paint on my rear driver side door. When I picked it up. It was gone!!!! I went back inside, and I said 'I can't believe you did that!!!!, thank you so much' he said 'I had the guys clean it up for, no big deal, you're welcome!' These guys are very kind, efficient, fair, honest, and went out of their way to make me happier than I was for the service I paid for! That's a great mechanic! I've been bringing my car to Zepeda for years and I'm sorry I haven't written a review sooner. I absolutely love this place. As a woman, I am always skeptical of being treated like an idiot or duped into paying for things I don't need. The guys that work here have never, ever done either to me. Additionally, I am from a small town where the auto repair places are small and the people treat you like a human and bring you in back to point to the actual issues with your car. Zepeda has ALWAYS done that for me. I've brought my car in for simple oil changes, check ups before a road trip and major repairs. They are always timely, informative and NEVER pushy. Even if I bring my car in for just an oil change, they do a complete check up and let me know if there is anything else going on. HOWEVER- if I don't want the work done, they don't do it- and they don't press the issue. They let me know they will put the info in my file and I can let them know in the future if I want the work done or not. Addtionally, I have matched prices vs. other places for work they've done on my tires brakes, etc. and they are always the cheapest. I had a brake light out once and needed an oil change so I took my car to NAPA auto parts becuause it was the tiniest bit closer. I let them know all I needed to do was purchase the brake light- I could put it in myself. They were like, "It's really no problem for us to put it in- it will just take a second!" I was there FOR AGES. Then, they miscommunicated that my car was finished so I sat there 30 minutes longer than needed. Finally, they CHARGED me for putting the brake light in after I expressely said I could do it and they were like, "It's really no big deal!" $20 in labor for just the brake light. $80 later after an oil change and a brake light replacement- I learned another lesson in reliability vs. convenience. I haven't been to another auto repair place since. ZEPEDA FOREVER! LOVE YOU GUYS! They even send me a Christmas card every year!! Who does that anymore?? Go here. Go here forever. read more

After my sour experience with Zepeda, I started looking elsewhere for a mechanic. I haven't found anyone exceptional, so I've come back to Zepeda with my wife's car based on the continued good reviews - maybe my bad experience was bad luck, or a bad time period for the business. They seem to be better about calling to let you know the car is ready, etc, and David was very thorough about explaining the issues they fixed as well as some issues that they didn't yet fix. He was willing to answer lots of questions I had, and spent a good amount of time doing so. I'm now bringing my car in because it has also had an issue or two of late, and we'll see how that goes. So far, things are looking up with Zepeda and I'm glad thus far that I've given them another chance! I will definitely come back and update after they look at my car as well. read more

I made an appointment because my check engine light was on. I dropped off my car and was told a technician would run a diagnostic check and call me with results. Several hours later I made several calls but was unable to get through. When I finally got through, I was told the technician is "currently" working on the car and that I would be contacted back. I was never contacted. I had to wait till the next day to make several more unanswered calls. I was finally contacted back only to be told that the test they ran did not give them specific results as to what was wrong with the car. I was told that they need to do a secondary test and that this secondary test came at a price of $95. So I basically waited over 24 hours, for a simple diagnostic check, only to be told that they don't know what's wrong with the car but they can keep checking but I have to pay $95. read more

i have to say, our first experience was a really good one =) Definately a lot of "pros" going for this neighborhood shop - 1) they do what they say they are going to do and the quotes are what u pay .. sounds easy enough, but as many of us kno, thats not always the way in the world of mechanics ..final bill shock is one of the most unpleasant things that can happen but Carlos told us to the penny what it would cost and to that penny thats exactly what we paid, even tho our car wound up causing them a bit of minor trouble with rusty bolts that added to the time they originally were expecting to need to do our job .. 2) they dont overcharge u .. no huge padding of labor time and nickle and diming here .. 3) Carlos is pleasant and professional .. he takes the time to explain to u what needs to be done -then what was done and it is their status quo to show u the parts that came from your car ..4) no extra work gets hardsold @ u here .. i asked about a hose i wasnt sure needed replaced - Carlos could have said it did, but he didnt .. i respect the honesty 5) the most important part - they go the extra mile .. our SUV is olllllld ..and olllld cars have bolts that stick and rust - the guys stayed late to try to get our car fixed on a Friday night so i could have it for work on Saturday because i had the flu and was trying to avoid a 4 block early Saturday a.m walk to the bus line that would be running .. it still wound up not being ready because what they had left to do on the car was just not gonna happen in 30 or 45 mins ,but i seriously appreciate the effort --just like i appreciate the fact that they offered to come and pick us up cause we only live 8 or 9 blocks away - if they could have finished the car on that Friday night .. its things like that that make u appreciate a business and pick them in front of other places .. and ill sneak a 6) in too .. they give u a discount if u say u saw them on yelp =) .. Now then-no ones perfect and the things that i would say need tweaking here are not huge issues and certainly not uncommon. This place is busy - busy as in my fiance brought the car by on Monday and was told to come back on Tuesday because they just had too much going on. No problem. We also werent able to pick our car up until Saturday -which means 4 days of the car being in the shop. Again, not a big deal, but understand depending on what u need done, it may not be a same day thing. (We had to have a rack and pinion replaced and it neccesitated some part hunting .. etc, with the extra work on the bolts, id have expected a 2 day job- 3 at the most - but yanno, they are busy -and they are busy because they are good ... so if u need your car quickly or in a certain time frame, ask if its possible) .. the last thing is the most common annoyance at mechanic shops -and that is the call back. We did have to call the shop a couple of times and check on things when we were expecting and didnt get a call from them , but to be honest, it happened a lot less than other places i have been to with cars. My suggestion is -hey u kno its a busy place, if u are dying for an update, dont wait around for the call, make the call yourself. In closing, a good mechanic is hard to find and folks, Zepeda Auto Repair is a good mechanic! They are definately our go-to guys from now on and i would -and will- recommend them to people i know in the neighborhood ..and on yelp! read more

They tell me exactly what was happening, showed me the piece they were replacing, told me what it specifically does, and let me know what else I can expect. Took my car there a while ago and it was misfiring, the could not find the issue after a lot of checking. After leaving my car here for almost six hours from 8am-1:30pm on a Saturday, I hoped they could diagnose the issue. I had to call to check in and at 1pm (closing time) I show up and they still don't have any answers. They finally come out to speak with us and say it could be three things based on the code reader but they'll need to schedule another appointment to diagnose the issue with a cost of $90 to explore. Why didn't you call me, state you needed to do further exploration and that it would be $90? I'd have authorized it immediately. Instead you want me to come back in for a second day for a second appointment for more diagnosis? No sense making me come in for an 8am appointment when you're not even looking at me car until I show up at closing time. Definitely no sense making me take two cabs to get home and back just to state you want money to do what should have been done today. Protip: if you're coming here make sure they're aware you have money because this may save you days of waiting and "diagnosis" as they must have thought I was too poor to afford the $90 diagnosis fee today. Also, sit with you car no matter how much they discourage this. Then you know they're actually working on it and not just waiting for you to show up to plug a machine in. Seemed odd when I asked to stay in the waiting room then they showed us out, saying they were too busy to give an estimate in a few hours time. After a quick stop to the part store I now know the 02 heater circuit is faulty in my 02 sensor. Thanks AutoZone. "Would you like to schedule your next appointment," the gentleman asked? They are not a dealer shop, but can get parts sent over relatively quickly. Ex: I needed an air filter replaced on my subaru. They said they could have it delivered within an hour. As a young female patron, I'm used to having auto repair men speak to me condescendingly, patronizingly, or completely avoid explaining the problem with my vehicle and moving straight to discussing the bill. That is not the case at Zepeda's. They never talk down to me and treat me with respect. A few times when I was having trouble deciding whether or not to fix something, they encouraged me to ask lots of questions and take my time and do more research before I made the decision to spend the money. They even got on the phone to explain one issue to my father. Additionally, they've saved parts of my car that were garbage to demonstrate the problem and help me understand what went wrong. They take the time to teach and never try to tack on all of the unnecessary other items that could be fixed just to make a buck. I recommend them to everyone I know, and now to strangers, too. Every auto repair thing is going to be expensive, let me get that out of the way. Get with the program or buy a Ventra card. There is no such thing as cheap and good auto repair (your cousin Benny in his garage will not help you pass emissions, I'm sorry). Zepeda was recommended to me by a Facebook friend, and I was surprised to find out they were an 8 minute walk from my apartment. Great! Because my newish Subaru Forester had been acting up, and the dealership I bought it from has given me asinine prices and multi day wait times just to diagnose what was wrong. Yeah okay, get out of here with that crap. So I drive across the city on a near daily basis for work, I literally cannot live without the car (have you tried to get from Hyde Park to Logan Square at 1 am, as a woman? Safely? Yeah mmkay), and David especially (love the embroidered track jacket) was incredibly accommodating to my weird schedule. I came and dropped the car off after closing the restaurant the night before and he was apologetic when he called, because he'd assumed (correctly) that I was napping. The work was done well, and done at a reasonable rate. It's not the same price point as my hillbilly pals back in Michigan, but in the city, you cannot find anyone more reasonable and more knowledgeable than Zepeda. Massive bonus points for working with a Subaru, I know they're usually reserved for specialty mechanics, who are usually a huge ripoff. read more

Honest. Friendly. Experienced. Those are three words that I think sum up the guys at Zepeda Auto Repair. My fiancee and I have been going to Zepeda for the past year or so and I have no idea why I am only now writing a review. I am very good at sniffing out a BS'er and Carlos is anything but that. He goes over everything in detail about the repairs that are needed, why the repair is important, and the risks of not getting the repair. Shouldn't every mechanic do this? Absolutely, but how many crappy mechanics have you run into that feeds you BS in an effort to make a little more $? The way that I have been treated by Zepeda auto is the reason I continue to use this shop when my car needs repairs. Carlos is an excellent businessman and the mechanics are excellent as well.
