I really liked this place when I came in. I was a little bit apprehensive about how brunch on Sunday at 11am might turn out, since the crepe cafe that it used to be was always crowded. Luckily, it wasn't too bad, and the customers who were in there were very understanding of the small space it was. Decor-wise, the place has character. I've never been to Belgium, but this place had European flair. Food-wise, the menu is limited, which I think is good. As a specialty shop, you shouldn't have so many things you're trying to be good at. The waffles seem kind of small in size, but like other reviewers have mentioned they are deceptively dense! I've only had mine with Nutella, strawberry, bananas, and confectioners sugar which was delicious. The one thing thing this place could improve is how they make their coffees. During my visit, I ordered a cafe au lait, which turned out to be steamed milk with foam at the top. I didn't realize this until I was halfway done with the drink, and I brought this up to the girl at the counter, who very courteously made me a new one which again was a cup of steamed milk with foam. She then gave me a full refund for the drink. Customer service-wise, I would say the shop is on point, but I don't think they should charge $3.50 for a coffee drink that they make with a keurig-like machine. Stick with the waffles! read more

That said, given all other Yelpers' complaints of slow service, perhaps the off hours explain my good experiences here because the staff pays kind attention to me and my friend(s). As far as the waffles go, I would go Liege over Brussels if you want a more filling waffle, but there's something so delicate and lovely about the thin, crispy Brussels waffle too. The whipped cream is none too sweet. I actually prefer the waffle here as a shared after-dinner dessert as opposed to a morning meal. Though, you have to foot the bill for the tax which goes over the $7.5 (base waffle + $3 worth of extra toppings). We tried the liege waffle + fruit delight (strawberries, bananas, and Belgium chocolate). I liked that the waffles were somewhat made to order unlike Saus, which has stacks upon stacks of pre-made waffles that are reheated for customers. Also, I think the size of the waffle may be slightly bigger here than Saus. The waffle itself was a little crispier and less spongy than other restaurants, but I thought it was mighty tasty with the toppings. What a cute little place, a slice right out of Belgium! I would have never found this place if it hadn't been for a few friends. Loved the Gourmand leige waffle, which consists of bananas, caramel, and whipped cream. The server informed me that the whipped cream would be served on the side and sure enough a giant mound was presented next to my waffle. At first, I was apprehensive, but having the whipped cream served like that was actually the better method, so as to not overpower the other flavors. Man people are tough critics in their reviews. I love Zinneken's!! The liege waffles are so delicious when they are warm and there are great toppings. Get the cookie butter spread on your waffle!! Just thinking about it makes me hungry. If you go on a weekday afternoon, there isn't much of a crowd. It is pretty small though, so don't count on finding any seats there. I came here around 11 in the morning for some breakfast. First I think everyone should know that it's only waffles. There are two types of waffles, each $4.50 and toppings for $1 each. The staff was very helpful and friendly and the waffles were good. I got one with chocolate and strawberries and it was pretty good. The place is pretty small so I don't recommend it for groups or kids, and it can be difficult to find a seat. I just had the worst experience at this place. I went here during the morning with my husband. After getting a seat, my husband and I decided to order online since we weren't familiar with the menu and the cash register area seemed a bit busy at the time. After we placed our order and the crowd died down at the register, my husband went up to ask the workers if we could get our waffles on a plate instead of in a "to-go" box since we'd be eating it in the restaurant. We have done this same thing at many different restaurants in the area without any problems. The woman snapped at him in a really rude way that the app was only for pick-up orders and that we'd have to cancel our order and place a new one if we wanted a plate (which is absurd enough to begin with), then got extremely impatient and just walked away when he asked her if he could just have the plate because he'd place the exact same order anyway. In shock, he walked away from the register and then came up to me to tell me about what just happened. Another worker came up to us and rudely told us the same response, but this time made it sound like we would have to leave with our food unless we cancelled and reordered. Both of these women were so sour and rude, it isn't very hard to at least attempt to be kind to your customers and say something along the lines of "I'm sorry, but it's against our policy to eat in the restaurant if you order online" instead of treating us like we had a nerve for existing. Great sense of professionalism and customer service. Slightly irritated, my husband cancelled the order once she left and then went up to the register to replace the order. While he was gone, one of the women came up to me and literally ripped my husband's chair out from under my leg (I had my knee resting on the side of the chair as I waited for him) and moved it to an empty nearby table nobody was sitting at. My knee got smacked so hard in the process, I discovered a bruise on it a few hours later. I had to get up with my hurt leg and go get my husband's chair back so he would have somewhere to sit down when he returned. The same worker who hurt my leg kept glaring at us from behind the counter, and when she brought us our waffles she firmly just dropped them on the table with her back to us. The waffle itself wasn't the best either, which was disappointing since we were hoping the food would at least be good to make up for the horrible treatment we received. It tasted pretty good on the first few bites, but it's just so oily that you start to feel ill as you eat it. In the end, I paid $17 for sour looks, a bruised knee, and two stomachaches. I wouldn't come back here even if you paid me to. I have never seen such a lack of professionalism in my life. read more

More than for the food, I come here for the pleasant, cute atmosphere. This tiny corner store is located a bit off Harvard Square (but still a walking distance). Their sugary toppings for the waffles are best for someone having a sweet tooth. For about $3 you can pick from a variety of toppings they offer for the waffles. They also serve espresso drinks which go well with sweet main menu. The waffles can be too dry and leave you thirsty, but they have complimentary water. There are two types of waffles - soft and crispy. I recommend soft waffles for dry toppings - oreo chunks, chocolate chips, etc., while the overall fruity, soft toppings complement the crispy waffles well. Bananas and caramel sauce are the best in my experience. All waffles seem to come with whipped cream. For my last two visits, the customers were almost entirely comprised of teen to twentysomething girlfriends, which pretty much says a lot about this pastel-themed place. With the classical music playing in the background, many peeing boy statues of varying color and sizes, and the huge window overlooking Mass Ave, Zinneken's recreation of a European feel is not sophisticated, but welcoming and easy to the eye. All in all, it's a fun finding in Harvard Square for limited budget. While they don't have the healthiest menu, the cute atmosphere makes for most of the experience. read more

But since it's still relatively new and obviously working out some kinks, let me break the review down by category: Ambiance: 5 stars for achieving that classic New England breakfast spot vibe! It completely reminds me of my favorite Vermont breakfast eatery. On another note - they have tables for small parties of 2 or more, but also have a bar along the window that is perfect for grabbing a solo bite and a coffee with some reading. But that's the problem: the portion size gets 3~4 stars (it's pretty small. or maybe I'm just a fatty =) I would have to eat about 2 of these to be pretty full for a brunch, and I'm a small woman. I am happy I discovered this place two days before I leave Harvard. I wouldn't be able to fit into any of my jeans if I had found it earlier. Located on Mass Ave with giant windows facing the street gives the cafe/restaurant/waffle house a shelter-from-the-Sunday-thunderstorm ambiance. Though service is a bit slow (they are severely understaffed), the wait is well worth. Seating is an issue and depends on your luck. I definitely recommend the Fruit Delight if you enjoy light and crispy waffles topped with Nutella and fruits. The waffles are almost too pretty to eat and sends most people into an Instagram frenzy.
