Next Stop!! Our next stop was Zippy's due to a few factors: 1. They weren't busy. 2. There was parking in their lot. 3. There was a long line for our first dine-in choice. COVID PRECAUTIONS: 1. QR code to scan to place your name on the wait list. 2. Masks required to enter restaurant. 3. Temperature check upon entering the restaurant. 4. Plexiglass between tables. 5. Social distancing between tables (some tables not being used). 6. The staff are all wearing masks At this point, I won't dwell on the food too much. I didn't try anything new. Since I don't go to Zippy's often (especially during the pandemic), I decided to order a favorite of mine: The Chili and Chicken Mixed Plate with mac salad and brown rice. Yum! For some reason, I always feel compelled to order a dish with chili whenever I visit Zippys. The others in my group ordered Korean Chicken and breakfast fare. No concerns or complaints about the food; it was pretty much the standard Zippy's quality locals have come to know and love. SERVICE: Quite good and very satisfactory. Our server was a lovely woman, who was one of the most nicest and polite employees I've ever encountered at Zippy's. She was so sweet! She checked on us periodically throughout the meal. Water refills were constant, and I appreciated that she returned with a second cup of hot water for my tea. BOTTOM LINE: If you're craving chili or some comfort food, make Zippy's Kailua your next stop. I also appreciated the great customer service and all the Covid precautions in place. read more

Had a early dinner today. I had the mini roast turkey plate. My husband had mini fried chicken with chili. Sorry no pic. Thank you to our server Sharma we wanted to use the new app that started on Monday so she explain how to work it even though she said the staff is still learning about the app too. From the get go Zippy's had done its part and put up acrylic partitions to increase the safety of their employees and customers. I've never walked into a Zippy's and didn't already feel welcomed by everyone. This rating is for the food and customer service. Always great and nostalgic food. Always friendly service from all the Aunties and Uncles working the back. This particular Zippy's had constant customer flow. We still are not able to dine in so there was more counter service than usual. Minus one star cause the whole standing in line and ordering was very disorganized. I wasn't sure where to stand, who was in line, who had already ordered, etc. There is no clear way of going or flow of service. One of the cashiers was having an issue with her register and taking payments with a customer's card, so there was only one register open. There are markers on the ground to promote social distancing, but no arrows or areas that help guide service. I waited about 5 minutes to realize who was waiting for food and who had already ordered. This had me looking around the display cases and I found they were selling prepackaged bulk items, such as chili, flour, pancake mix, and more. I'm 5 months pregnant so asked to use the restroom. Was told bathroom not working. Then I asked if I could use the dining room, they said I have to show a vax card - WOW. Picked up my order and wanted to purchase dessert. There was only one cake in the display, chantilly. I confirmed that was the only cake available. I said I'll take that one, employee from behind the counter shouted "the chantilly is mine!!" I told the cashier to ring me up so I could leave this horrendous place and never return. I love dining in at various Zippy's on the island! This time around, I was able to meet one of my bf's best friends when we had dinner at this location. It was really nice coming here on a Friday night because it wasn't busy. There were a lot of open tables to ensure proper social distancing which I appreciate. If you have an email, I highly suggest you subscribe to Zippy's email list. They have monthly specials and for August 2021, their two specials are the shoyu pork plate and spaghetti chicken mix plate. It's nice to try their specials because most of the time, I don't believe they serve the same specials again for a long time i.e. chili nachos, teri beef katsu and garlic miso chicken I tried a piece of my bf's shoyu pork and it was very yummy and tender! I always get their spaghetti and the taste of it brings me to a happy place because it's one of my favorites. The taste never changed over the years and it's really delicious too! You also can't go wrong with their fried chicken, garlic bread and mac salad. If you dine-in, you can also get canned corn instead of mac salad. Our server Brooke was really nice! I called thee Kailua location to make a phone order. I wanted to get 10 "clubhouse" sandwiches with fries and the lady told me that the "clubhouse" is only sold in the restaurant side of Zippy's . Food is regular Zippy's but workers who smoke outside are on parking patrol when you park in their lot. We placed a take out order while driving to Zippy's, parked in the parking lot while waiting the 15-20 mins we were told to wait, went for a short walk and returned to the restaurant in 15 min to get our food.. when we got back to the car there was note a saying DO NOT PARK HERE. We took it in to the restaurant and the worker accused us of parking there without patronizing Zippy's. We provided the receipt of our phone order and she didn't have anything to say. But also, more Hawaiian twists...I got a combo platter with a piece of fried chicken, beef teriyaki, fish, and a slice of spam (when in Hawaii after all!). All on a bed of steamed sticky rice with a sprinkling of a seaweed/sesame blend which was a classic HawIian blend of mainland America, Asian, and Hawaiian. Even came with a fork and chopsticks. First time ordering here and REALLY liked the Valentines Day Special ! Food: the Parmesan crusted, mahi-mahi with creamy caper sauce and spaghetti was very tasty. Fish done just right and the sauce was better than I expected from a small kitchen. The portion was big enough for two people.The garlic toast was nicely toasted. The chili+rice was a generous sized helping for lunch -and thankfully they didn't put hot peppers in it. Very tasty . We eat here often because the staff is so nice. Normally the food is fine. This time around my chicken katsu was overcooked. What I found weird was that it was cut and then fried. I ended up only eating the Mac salad and a little rice because the chicken was horrible. The two orders of fried rice, eggs, and bacon was fine though. I would drive thru Waimanalo or Kaneohe to avoid Kailua town, but my 40-something year old baby wanted Zippy's. I seriously considered Kaneohe Zippy's, but I took a chance. The Zippy's chain is pretty consistent from one to another, but the difference is the service and clientele. Fortunately, there were only locals at 2:00pm and the servers were all local too! I ordered the Teri Plate & Spam Musubi, husband ordered the Loco Moco, son ordered Saimin, and daughter ordered Korean Chicken Salad. Growing up we frequently did this. Ordered from Zippy's and take it to the beach to enjoy. Now, I get to share this with my family. The Teri Plate is Teriyaki Beef. You get 3 flanks, 2 scoops of white rice and mac salad (macaroni salad) which is Hawaii's popular and favorite side dish. Saimin is noodles and has a unique flavor. It's not ramen. The broth is lighter and noodles are thin. Loco Moco is hamburger meat w/gravy and sunnyside up eggs on top. The best i can describe the meat is Salisbury Steak. Very heavy but delicious. I always get Spam Musubi. It's a perfect snack that requires no utensil that will hold you up until your next meal. Perfect for on the go. If you just want dessert, they have Napolean's Bakery inside as well. The staff at this location are friendly. If you want to dine in, they have a restaurant where you wait to be seated and a waitress will take your order. If you are in a hurry and just want to order your own food, it is next door. My daughter loved her spam musubi and I wanted something light and had the saimin, which was very tasty. Tips for Dine-In based on my visit today: **You would have to join the waitlist on the Zippys website for this location to guarantee your seats here in the restaurant side. **Try telling your waitress/waiter everything you want in one go, to help ease the process because they won't always ask if you need anything else. **Sometimes there's no main hostess, so wait times are going to be longer. **There's no chairs to sit while waiting to be checked in, so have your elderly/other members wait in the car, while someone waits to be checked in. A lot of people like Zippy's and though it's not my favorite local spot it's okay. When their chicken is cooked right it's really good. They seem to have gotten better but I may have just been lucky. My problem is their portion size. The cost of doing business has gone up and people understand that prices will go up. Like other food places in the newspaper today, Zippys has also reduced their portion size. Two Zip-pacs I ordered from different locations had portion size problems. One had a paper thin piece of spam, the other (Kailua) had less than 1mouthful of teriyaki meat and less rice than I'm used to seeing. As I recall, Zip-pacs were originally meant as quick pick up meals (Zip?). It's now an obvious reference to how quickly you can eat it because the portions are smaller. Do one or the other! Raising prices and reducing portions should be "criminal". If it's not intentional you should let your restaurants know to pay attention to the portion sizes! read more
