Zip Pac fried chicken, teriyaki beef, Spam, and fried fish over rice

This Zippy's location has always been good and consistent since I was a child. The flavors don't change, the quantity is good, you'll leave satisfied. This location is nice as it's on the water in Hawaii Kai. The Napoleon bakery has less of a selection than it used to have, or maybe I've been going too late. (which might be a good thing!)

Bakery side needs to be condemned for health hazards. Algae or mold covering the inside of the bakery case. Small bugs crawling over the donuts and platters and a fly freely flying around in the pastry case. The lack of hygiene and maintenance here is astounding. We threw away our take out food after seeing this as I can't imagine what the kitchen looks like if the pastry case in the front looks like this.

Sorry to my Hawaiian bruddas but Zippy's is straight trash. The seating is outdoors so there's hella birds pecking at your feet hoping you drop some rice or Mac salad. The food is comparable to any Hawaiian food spot like L&L or Ohana. I thought it was gonna be much better because all my island friends rave about it. The pricing is insane too. The value is not there at all. I'm never coming back to any Zippy's ever again. Zip PAC Deluxe: chicken was crispy but had no good flavor. Chili is trash. Fish wasn't good either. Loco Moco: nothing special. Tastes like a cheap loco Moco Chicken trio: Korean fried chicken was hard and not chewable. At least the food was edible. I had to eat it because we spent so much money on it already.

In 1966, brothers Francis and Charles Higa started the first Zippy's restaurant on So. King St. in Honolulu. Today, there are 24 Zippy locations on Oahu, Maui, and the Mainland. Almost all locations have a take-out counter, dine-in area, and a bakery. It is now run by Jason Higa, 2nd generation of the original owners. Zippy's is a popular casual dining chain in HI known for its stews, chili, and other hearty comfort food that locals grew up with. It serves American, Japanese, Chinese, and Hawaiian fusion food. They're also known for their Zip Pac bentos, Zip mein, Korean fried chicken, their daily specials, and a wide range of menu items for all ages of diners. Zippy's, in the Koko Marina Shopping Center, opened in 1987 for the HI Kai community with a beautiful and spectacular marina view of the water, boats, and ducks. After Covid, Zippy's Koko Marina struggled to keep its dining area fully staffed, and with the dining area in need of an uplift and rising food costs, the dining room was closed on 2/5/23, as it reverted back to Koko Marina Center management. Since the closure of the dining room, my observations include the following: * We miss the dining room, as it had a perfect view of the marina, and it was a place where family or friends could congregate to just "talk story." Young adults would congregate there, as it was a safe place to do so. There is only a covered outside area of booths near the takeout counter, which does not serve the same purpose. No dine-in area, so no breakfasts that can be ordered all day. * Restrooms are far away in a separate building next door. You will need to take the elevator which is further down in the building, if you are unable to use the stairway. You will also need a code. When the dining room was open, there was a restroom right next to the dining room, but Zippy's no longer maintains it. * Takeout service seems sporadic, and I would not be surprised if one day, Zippy's management decides to eliminate the Koko Marina location. Over the years, there has been criticism that Zippy's has increased their prices while at the same time decreased its portion amounts. It's also been said that they weigh their portion sizes for consistency. But despite this, many of us continue to enjoy their menu offerings from time to time. Many who have moved outside of HI occasionally return home, and one of the first things they do is to eat at Zippy's! Our son and his family, who live in Toronto, ensures that they have a Zippy's meal when they return home for a visit. My go-to favorites at Zippy's include their Zip Pac, chicken/chili combo, and chili with rice bowl. Limited staff manning the take-out orders are long-time employees who are efficient and helpful in answering your questions. The open-air area near the take-out counter is clean, spacious, and provides tables to eat your take-out. Zippy's has been a very vocal supporter of the HI Kai community, as it supports youth and family organizations, schools, and community programs. And it was common for many of us to redeem fundraiser tickets for chili, meat sauce or cornbread. Zippy's also sells its Kokua Pac, with a portion of the proceeds donated to various charities. Hours of operation of the takeout section is daily from 6a to 10p. Lots of free parking in the Koko Marina Shopping Center parking lot that is shared with other businesses. Not sure if this is the last hurrah for Zippy's Koko Marina, but we are grateful that they are still here for us and hope that they continue to be part of the HI Kai community. Support local!

    Bakery

Stay away from this Zippy's if you value your health. They have mold/algae growing in plain sight. How many workers and managers must have seen this gross stuff on the bakery window yet decided to do nothing about it? Let that sink in for a second. The outdoor dining area has rust, dirt, and broken materials all over the place. I was going to order food but changed my mind after seeing the state of things and instead ordered a coffee. The coffee was lukewarm - they couldn't even get that right. This Zippy's is an embarrassment and brings shame to all the other Zippy's on this island. The owner should be ashamed.

Have been coming here since I was in high school, it's one of the best zippys! Had a bowl of chili rice with garlic bread, it was decadent as always!

    Breakfast

Sadly there must be only one cook. Premade Portuguese bean soup and chili with a breakfast took more than 25 minutes. Staff was friendly but they need more help. Management is setting them up for failure and frustrated customers. Dining area is run down. Fried rice and corned beef hash had no taste.

    Roast turkey "special"
    Shaun N.

It's Zippys what could I expect. The food was dry and bland. I got a special the mini roast turkey and this is what I received. No salad or stuffing which is what was said on the menu. I mean I do manage a restaurant and hate to leave reviews if it ain't positive but I called and was out on hold for over 20 minutes. But seriously? I understand that mistakes happen but how on earth do you send something like this out? It was slow and not busy inside, not to sure about take out but still. If you just take a look at it wouldn't you think where the stuffing ? Or the cranberry? I got a mini so this was $13 without tax and tip. I should have just gone and got a microwaveable dinner for half the cost. Ridiculous

Zippy's at Koko Marina is not zippy at all. Waited 16 minutes for my Kokua Pac. While I was waiting. I went over to Napoleon's Bakery. Wow! It really looked unappealing. The display case was rusted and the glass was not clean. The counter had dirty plywood to close the counter. Won't be going back to Zippy's anytime soon. Hope they can spruce things up!

    Korean fried chicken salad
    Kassandra S.

I got the Korean fried chicken salad bowl. Nothing special to it, the salad was a mixed salad & the Asian sauce was a bit thick, but tasty. The fried chicken was actually very good! My family got the sweet & sour chicken (not pictured) the plate looked very unappetizing & the chicken was drenched in sauce & was a miss for us. The service was quick & the views were great. We came from the Koko head trail & stopped for a quick bite before heading back to Waikiki where we were staying. The ambiance was nice, the beach views made the stop worth it & it was quite empty for a Saturday afternoon.

    Korean Chicken
    Debra N.

I didn't take pictures because it was crowded. People were still there hanging out...and enjoying themselves. I ordered a Korean Chicken plate, favorite. It was sweet, shoyu, garlicky and intense flavor that permeates your palate. In other words, do not go on a date or kiss your favorite person. My friend was waiting at his house where we were preparing to rent it out. He got a Ted's burger and not get me one. So, I killed him with the ono Korean Chicken! He looked at me...my favorite was his expression. I offered half. He said I'll save it for dinner. I ate three pieces and left seven for him. I'm a good friend...Ciao!

Revisiting the east side of the island with my friend, I decided to eat at Zippy's at the koko marina center. Sadly, the dining area is closed as well as the bathrooms at Zippy's. There is a bathroom, but it is at the building on the left side of zippy's on the second floor of the building, next to the florist. Food was the same as other zippy's, fresh and fried chicken was crunchy. Even though it was outside, we could eat our lunch in peace having it next to the pier with a scenic serene view of the ocean. Service was fast, but tables were a bit dirty, and a table also didn't have a tabletop, and at least there weren't bird turd since there is a sign posted "don't feed the birds," but there was a dove that was persistent in hanging near our table even if we tried shooing it away.

Sunday, February 5, 2023, will be the last day to dine in at this Koko Marina location of Zippy's... It was shocking news... Donna O. suggested that we pay our final respects to this iconic restaurant. Gosh - this Zippy's has the best view of the marina... I remember bringing Vienna (from Los Angeles) here after we hiked to the Makapu'u Lighthouse. We had a satisfying, convenient, and relatively inexpensive meal. I've been here at various other times with my family and my classmates from high school... Well... It was nice to visit one last time with Donna, Bruddah Fran, Peter Y., and Kenzie. Happy memories will live on...

I will say that the positive points were that we were able to call and order on the way there and by the time we got there, we paid and waited no more than a couple minutes for the wings to come out. Still crispy and enjoyable, just missing a bit of flavor. Fortunately for them, today is the day we intended to use Korean fried chicken in our last dab challenge so we have flavor AND spicy to go with crispy, juicy wings. Ordered a turkey and avocado sandwich and a chicken wrap. I then sat down to ENJOY MY SANDWICH at the tables provided by the establishment. Within about 10 minutes, a young girl came outside from the shop and began slamming the metal chairs and tables together. It was the kind of noise and clanging that make you jump when you're not expecting it. This employee continued to slam together the chairs and tables to bring them into the shop. It was GLARINGLY apparent she wanted to close up the shop and get us to leave. I should mention, we were not the only customers there. There were 5 of us that I counted. Everyone got up to leave. I understand that the shop closes at 3pm but this was totally rude and unacceptable. As I local person, I was completely shocked at this total lack of professionalism and aloha. Will be awhile before I consider returning especially because it was clear we were not wanted there. Sorry, Māla, but please check your girl.

I was always down for a juicy succulent piece of fried chicken however it was fed to me. It wasn't the healthiest way to eat chicken, but things fried just tasted better, correct!? Founded in 1996 on the campus of LSU by Todd Graves and named after a friend's Labrador Retriever (Raising Cane), his arduous dream that began in college has since grown into one of the fastest grown restaurant brands in the U.S. Would I raise a thumb's up instead of a middle finger to their tender chicken!? PURCHASE(S) 3pc Chicken Fingers Sandwich ($8.79): This messy two-hander was slipping and sliding all over the place as I tried to keep it together (I failed). Three crispy crunchy thick pieces of chicken between a pillowy soft sweet bun with a smear of Cane sauce and a hint of lettuce, this was a lovely introduction to this brand's food, and I now understood the hype that surrounded it. Aesthetics aside, you could've easily eaten this as fingers and a side of bread, but this large sandwich did the job. My only wish was that it was spicy and came with pickle chips, but it was still ono! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=sod8F8j7AIUDoK3mQptIUw The Box Combo - 4pc Chicken Fingers, Crinkle-Cut Fries, Texas Toast, Coleslaw, Cane Sauce, 22floz Drink ($12.79): Because of my sandwich, I was able to split this meal into two! Loaded with a little bit of everything, the chicken was just as yummy as my sandwich, there were plenty of spud sticks with a light dusting of seasoning, the toast was a revelation all on its own and would easily order a few more as a snack, the coleslaw lacked flavor (I put some on my sandwich instead), the Cane sauce add a touch of zing but wished it was spicy, and the sweet tea was like I was transported to the South it was so damn good and probably loaded with a ton of sugar. A heck of a meal at a deal! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=f5GUo39r6DcCdVAVoN-ArA SERVICE I was greeted by a young woman at the front counter where I immediately placed my order, received my cup to fill with my fountain drink of choice, and within five minutes my name was called as we caught each other's eyes while I waited nearby. Everything was good - mahalo! PARKING (FREE; N/A this instance): Located in the outdoor Hawaii Kai Towne Center, there were plenty of spots although I decided to do the 25-minute one-way walk for exercise - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A standard quick-service restaurant layout with a central order counter, a fountain drink machine off to the side, plenty of dining spots in a spacious room, and minimal decorations with some interesting elements such as these ceiling disco balls https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=Ruk3zzf-dWb0pTPXWIWt6Q (I didn't know if they actually worked). Plenty of natural lighting came in through the front doors and surrounding windows while recessed electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were no TVs while pop music played in the background. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL I really enjoyed the food at Hawaii Kai's Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers location as my first experience with this brand. High marks for all of the food (however... please add some spice to the chicken seasoning and sauce, and more flavor to the coleslaw), the portions were great, the prices were very reasonable, and the service straightforward. The menu was extremely limited, but the same could be said with In-N-Out. I wished there were some Hawaii-specific menu items. Sure, they were a fast-food chain restaurant, but they started as a local small mom & pop business at one time. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $23.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). All sandwiches come with crisp lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions, but there are options to customize with a variety of toppings, including bacon, blue cheese, jalapenos, onion rings, and pastrami; local geographical names are given to the burgers based on the toppings. There are also 3 sizes of patties: big (5 oz), bigger (7 oz), and biggest (double). * Golden potato buns that are soft and delicate in texture, with a slightly sweet note that brings out the savory, smoky, flavor of the burger. * Sides. Chicken tenders, salad, specialty fries, onion rings, thick milk shakes made with local Hawaii-made ice cream. With my gift card's remaining balance, I opted to order a teri burger. I had forgotten how fresh these burgers are! Yes, the burger was indeed fresh chilled ground chuck with crisp lettuce, cucumbers and sliced onions. The burger was rather large and had the perfect potato bun! Definitely not your normal McD! A very nice patty; however, the teri sauce was on the milder side and not the real teri sauce that locals are used to. Geared to tourists, the teri sauce will be more than satisfactory. Great customer service was the basis for the two founders who loved good burgers and set out to create a restaurant that served the best quality burger. Hours of operation are daily 10a to 9p. Located in the Koko Marina Shopping Center, free parking is available that is shared with other businesses in the complex. The restaurant interior is clean spacious with indoor and outdoor dining available; the interior décor has a nice ambiance of a surfing theme of the 1980's with wall photos. Note that that there are 12 locations in Hawaii, with 11 on Oahu, and one on Maui. Teddy's Bigger Burgers is a fine burger establishment that its owners take great pride in offering burgers that they have spent much time in making it their own! Support local!

Pivot to a plan that I didn't prepare so it was their hotdog which is always good but I almost never get the drink and did t want it even today but I do the staff asked if I wanted bottle water instead...YA! I'm not sure if this is the new thing or just here but no one has offered me this and not sure if it will work elsewhere but I really do love this option. The line at this Hawai'i Kai Towne Center is always calm and minimal and with a lot of shaded seating it is a nice place to relax as well after the shopping that you came for just a single item lol as I walked away here with a hotdog and bottle water for $1.57 is the best deal which is what I do love about Costco Food Court. Thank you!

Thursday June 4, 2026 I hardly come here for shopping or the food court too…read more I didn't know, that you have to use the self service kiosk to order and to pay for your food with a debit/credit card at the food court!! Then take your receipt to the MIDDLE counter window with the BIG sign to get your food and drink. It still takes long!!!! Not much of a difference when both of the lines are long already!!!! For seniors and some others that don't have a smart phone and debit or credit card it makes it very hard for them to get food or drink from the food court. Good idea for some and for some not. Ambiance is casual and comfortable for here.

There are bins for you to place the dishes when you are done. There young guy at the counter was helpful when I had some questions about the menu. The decor is cute and festive, just how I imagine a Mexican restaurant would look like. I like the colorful umbrellas at the ceiling. We ordered carnitas chimichanga and azada quesadillas. They were about $20 each. When we got the food we thought that they look kinda small. But actually they put so much meat inside it was so filling. The food was more than enough. The meat was tender and seasoned well. They didn't put too much salt which was great so I could taste the meat. And I don't know what they did to the tortillas but they tasted so good (maybe they deep fry them first?!). The side order of fries was also delicious. Overall great dining experience!

Popular spot... This…read moreHawaii Kai Towne Center location is quite popular even though I came pretty late like 7ish I was quite surprised of how busy they can get as the service starts right at their front door so when the line gets long you can see folks standing outside of the door and no they're not waiting outside for someone but the actual line. Ordering is so easy it's a matter of choices and they do have lots of that from a simple bowl or a full plate starting with your rice or noodles or half/half of both what's nice is that you make it your very own and as I selected one after another orange chicken, beef broccoli and string beans chicken breast...did you count three entrees...not me and was wondering what was in this tiny little box on top of my plate lol I guess I was hungry which is a good thing I did so as I found out that mom didn't eat so it was the perfect plate to share. They do have an app which is very easy to use and if you forget you can still upload your points using the receipt which is nice and handy as I rarely do visit Pandas but already have enough points for a free appetizer. Online order is quick and easy if you want to expedite your order as it lists the calories and prices clearly. Always love the fortune cookie that comes with your order as well as this quick grab is very nice and fast along with friendly staff love the vibe here along with a nice and spacious dining area and free parking is why many do come here for various reasons. Thank you!

The girl who was "helping" me was on her phone the entire time texting or answering texts. Even when checkout she was checking her phone and texting. Unprofessional, non engaging & didn't seem to care. No manager in site. I tried to call this morning around 10:50a twice. No answer. In fact after letting it ring, the recording said "no one available to answer" & hung up. Ordinarily it's a decent Panda Express but after this experience, I hesitate to return.

Housed in a former gas station, it would be easy to drive right on by without a second thought, as…read morenothing from the outside hints at the culinary treasures within. Despite the fact that it's a considerably trek for city-dwellers, factoring either traffic or bus schedules into the equation, or both if you're particularly unlucky, it's a journey always worth taking. Hit Hanauma Bay along the way and make it a day trip; the only way to top those dazzling sights is to follow them with a stellar meal. Boasting a menu composed of locally-sourced produce and entirely vegan options, you'll want to take a number of friends for the best experience. Heck, get out there and make some new friends! Join one of the long communal picnic tables out back and introduce yourself; there are no friendlier folks on earth than those living in paradise, as far as I've seen. That said, if there was only one dish to order, it would have to be the Oh WOW Laulau. Wow, indeed! No where else on earth have I found vegan laulau, let alone such a stellar rendition. Traditionally consisting of fatty pork and/or fish steamed in taro leaves, this version eschews the meat in favor of hearty root vegetables, adding creamy coconut into the mix for richness. Not to be overlooked is the Tofu Poke provided on the side, claiming to be spicy but really bearing just enough warmth to taste perfectly balanced. This was easily my personal favorite from the small sampling of dishes provided, but it's a close call when all the options are so good. Another front runner is the BBQ Portobello Sandwich. Mushrooms marinated in a bright, smoky barbecue sauce practically sing between two whole wheat buns. Coconut slaw tops off the assemblage with just the right amount of subtle sweetness to contrast the deeply savory flavors within. Simpler but no less spectacular dishes include the Roasted Veg Platter and Roasted Veg Avocado Sandwich. The way that the vegetables are treated with respect, from the moment they're harvested from nearby farms to the care taken when they reach the kitchen is evident with every bite. Cooked with care and proffered generously with each serving, even the basics make the trek out here worthwhile. I'm still trying to recreate that impossibly umami gravy offered on the side. It's one of those things that are so astoundingly, inconceivably delicious, it's impossible to deconstruct. Each entree promises an ideal amount of food; satisfying diners without over-stuffing them. That said, you'll still want to make room for dessert, especially when you see the towering bowls full of Outta This Swirled Soft Serve. Cool, naturally sweet spirals of banana-based soft serve are dressed to the nines with cacao sauce that hardens much like magic shell, granola and coconut flakes tumbling down the mountainous terrain, and fresh fruits that vary based on local availability- Expect papaya always to be in ample supply, based on the thriving papaya trees on premise. Each order is abundant enough to be a considered a full meal in and of itself.
