I've eaten here a couple of times in the last few months. Both times in the late morning...so, I've avoided the rush hours. Mostly empty this Monday morning in the Koko Marina Shopping Center as I wait for Costco to open. Their September special is the KFC ( Korean Fried Chicken ) and Chili Mixed plate for...$9.99. Ordered via their app and selected the no bean chili option. This mixed plate is definitively a deal at the special price - which is good thru 08.Oct. KFC was still fairly crispy ( with the sauce ) and tasty. For myself, no bean Zippy's chili is always excellent. Also, served on a bed...make that a bed sheet of cabbage and mac salad. I was full...and I eat like a pig. Dining area is spacious and scenic with a view of the marina. Plenty of parking stalls are available. Bakery side needs to be condemned for health hazards. Algae or mold covering the inside of the bakery case. Small bugs crawling over the donuts and platters and a fly freely flying around in the pastry case. The lack of hygiene and maintenance here is astounding. Sorry to my Hawaiian bruddas but Zippy's is straight trash. The seating is outdoors so there's hella birds pecking at your feet hoping you drop some rice or Mac salad. The food is comparable to any Hawaiian food spot like L&L or Ohana. I thought it was gonna be much better because all my island friends rave about it. The pricing is insane too. The value is not there at all. I'm never coming back to any Zippy's ever again. Zip PAC Deluxe: chicken was crispy but had no good flavor. Chili is trash. Fish wasn't good either. Loco Moco: nothing special. Tastes like a cheap loco Moco Chicken trio: Korean fried chicken was hard and not chewable. At least the food was edible. In 1966, brothers Francis and Charles Higa started the first Zippy's restaurant on So. King St. in Honolulu. Today, there are 24 Zippy locations on Oahu, Maui, and the Mainland. Almost all locations have a take-out counter, dine-in area, and a bakery. It is now run by Jason Higa, 2nd generation of the original owners. Zippy's is a popular casual dining chain in HI known for its stews, chili, and other hearty comfort food that locals grew up with. It serves American, Japanese, Chinese, and Hawaiian fusion food. They're also known for their Zip Pac bentos, Zip mein, Korean fried chicken, their daily specials, and a wide range of menu items for all ages of diners. Zippy's, in the Koko Marina Shopping Center, opened in 1987 for the HI Kai community with a beautiful and spectacular marina view of the water, boats, and ducks. After Covid, Zippy's Koko Marina struggled to keep its dining area fully staffed, and with the dining area in need of an uplift and rising food costs, the dining room was closed on 2/5/23, as it reverted back to Koko Marina Center management. Since the closure of the dining room, my observations include the following: * We miss the dining room, as it had a perfect view of the marina, and it was a place where family or friends could congregate to just "talk story." Young adults would congregate there, as it was a safe place to do so. There is only a covered outside area of booths near the takeout counter, which does not serve the same purpose. No dine-in area, so no breakfasts that can be ordered all day. * Restrooms are far away in a separate building next door. You will need to take the elevator which is further down in the building, if you are unable to use the stairway. You will also need a code. When the dining room was open, there was a restroom right next to the dining room, but Zippy's no longer maintains it. * Takeout service seems sporadic, and I would not be surprised if one day, Zippy's management decides to eliminate the Koko Marina location. Over the years, there has been criticism that Zippy's has increased their prices while at the same time decreased its portion amounts. It's also been said that they weigh their portion sizes for consistency. But despite this, many of us continue to enjoy their menu offerings from time to time. Many who have moved outside of HI occasionally return home, and one of the first things they do is to eat at Zippy's! Our son and his family, who live in Toronto, ensures that they have a Zippy's meal when they return home for a visit. My go-to favorites at Zippy's include their Zip Pac, chicken/chili combo, and chili with rice bowl. Limited staff manning the take-out orders are long-time employees who are efficient and helpful in answering your questions. The open-air area near the take-out counter is clean, spacious, and provides tables to eat your take-out. Zippy's has been a very vocal supporter of the HI Kai community, as it supports youth and family organizations, schools, and community programs. And it was common for many of us to redeem fundraiser tickets for chili, meat sauce or cornbread. Zippy's also sells its Kokua Pac, with a portion of the proceeds donated to various charities. Hours of operation of the takeout section is daily from 6a to 10p. Lots of free parking in the Koko Marina Shopping Center parking lot that is shared with other businesses. Not sure if this is the last hurrah for Zippy's Koko Marina, but we are grateful that they are still here for us and hope that they continue to be part of the HI Kai community. How many workers and managers must have seen this gross stuff on the bakery window yet decided to do nothing about it? Let that sink in for a second. The outdoor dining area has rust, dirt, and broken materials all over the place. I was going to order food but changed my mind after seeing the state of things and instead ordered a coffee. My family got the sweet & sour chicken (not pictured) the plate looked very unappetizing & the chicken was drenched in sauce & was a miss for us. The service was quick & the views were great. Revisiting the east side of the island with my friend, I decided to eat at Zippy's at the koko marina center. Sadly, the dining area is closed as well as the bathrooms at Zippy's. There is a bathroom, but it is at the building on the left side of zippy's on the second floor of the building, next to the florist. Food was the same as other zippy's, fresh and fried chicken was crunchy. Even though it was outside, we could eat our lunch in peace having it next to the pier with a scenic serene view of the ocean. Service was fast, but tables were a bit dirty, and a table also didn't have a tabletop, and at least there weren't bird turd since there is a sign posted "don't feed the birds," but there was a dove that was persistent in hanging near our table even if we tried shooing it away. read more

Donna O. suggested that we pay our final respects to this iconic restaurant. Gosh - this Zippy's has the best view of the marina... I remember bringing Vienna (from Los Angeles) here after we hiked to the Makapu'u Lighthouse. We had a satisfying, convenient, and relatively inexpensive meal. I've been here at various other times with my family and my classmates from high school... Well... It was nice to visit one last time with Donna, Bruddah Fran, Peter Y., and Kenzie. An era is closing up for Zippy's Koko Marina. What do I mean by that??? For the longest time, the Zippy's Restaurant at the Koko Marina Shopping Center had two eatery areas - 1. Zippy's had a full service restaurant if you chose to dine inside of an enclosed air conditioned area. The restaurant had a nice view of the bay, a/c of course, and someone will serve you your food at your table. 2. On the other side of the restaurant, Zippy's also had a "take-out" area, where you can walk up to the ordering counter, place your food order, & pay for your food. When you food is ready, they will call your order number, then you go back up to the counter and pick up your food. The "take-out' area also has seating, but there is no air conditioning. The seating area is covered, but it's an open air seating area. In recent years, times have changed.........I think a lot of businesses are facing a shortage of workers, and of course overall cost has gone through the roof with inflation! After hearing on the local news (last week) that the Koko Marina Zippy's was gonna close shop on the "restaurant side", a few of my Yelp buddies decided to make our pilgrimages to the Koko Marina Zippy's to eat our very last meal. Of course since we already had a big meal at Repetti's early that day, Zippy's was our so called "night cap" for dessert. What better way to end it with some Custard Pie & Coffee???? For you folks that don't know about Zippy's..........Zippy's has a fabulous bakery called Napoleon's Bakery, and I must say they make a fabulous Custard Pie!!!! Sad that they will be closing down half of the restaurant, but on the bright side, Zippy's isn't going anywhere, as they are keeping the Zippy's "take-out" area open inside of the Koko Marina Shopping Center! I truly love all the Zippys on the island of O'ahu, yet this one is my fav. The location, the view, the customer service are all welcoming, warm and wonderful. The dining room is cozy for a relaxing and delicious family style meal, even if you are dining alone. I go there with my Mainland family when they come out to visit each year, and they love it, too. Visited Zippy's Koko Marina tonight. We ordered the chili frank plate, no beans mac salad which was tasty as usual. I wanted to order the chili hot dog bun....however, i could not find it on the moble app. Soooooo i ended up ordering the mushroom burger with teriyaki sauce and extra mushrooms, with fries and corn chowder. The fries were a disaster....cold and not tasty at all...will not order it again. The mushroom burger was nice, with onions and tomato and lettuce. But no extra mushrooms and no teriyaki sauce, so no taste at all....disappointing because i had it before and it was so good, messy,but isn't most teriyaki burgers that way? It's Zippy's... what can I say. It happens to be the closest one to my home, so it's the one I frequent the most. The good news is that it has a fantastic view of the marina, which actually makes your fried chicken taste better! Haha The food is consistent no matter what Zippy's you go to. I always get the mini fried chicken plate with two scoops rice and Orange bang. My second favorite plate is the spaghetti. The wonton min is not that good, trust me. The absolute worst Zippy's but not because of the food. I try to avoid ordering from this Zippy's at all costs. They are sooooooooo slow and zero customer service (at least at the times I've gone). If you live between Kahala and Koko Marina, order from Kahala, even if you're closer to Koko Marina. If you do order from this location, call in your order and give them at least 30 minutes before you head there, better to give it 45 minutes. I order on the app. Today I chose 6 pm as pickup time. I got a text stating that the food would be ready 11 minutes early so I went there at 5:49 so the food wouldn't be sitting getting stale and cold. As I was walking into the restaurant I got another text that they were now running late and my food would be ready at 6:06 pm. Okay, things happen. Went to the counter just to check and they said I'd get a text when the food was ready. So I sat and waited until 6:10-no text. I gave it another 5, 10 minutes before I went to check again. The guy at the counter asked my name, reached back and there was my food. It had been SITTING, waiting and it had to have been a while it was sitting because there were orders all in front of it. I was so mad at this point I was afraid to even open my mouth for fear of being super rude to the guy who gave me my food. On my drive home, 5 minutes from home, I got a text stating "Zippy's Koko Marina: We believe your order should be ready, but we are still awaiting final confirmation from our team. Please reach out to our staff if you don't hear from us shortly." I don't know if the texts are auto-generated and it's a system problem or if the texts are generated by someone at the store but I've never had this issue at Kahala. In fact I've never had any issues except at THIS location. And it's not a new problem, it has been this way since pre-COVID. I will not go to this store again--finally lost all patience--which is why I'm writing this review. You can never go wrong with comfort food. Right after a nice view of the sunrise and you went on a mornkng swim in the ocean, heading down to Zippy is not a bad idea. I was so sad to find out that this restaurant will be closing for good next week. We came in for a last meal and enjoy the gorgeous views of the marina. We ordered our food and added the complete meal extra. The salad was nice and fresh but the roll was tiny and soon turned into stone as most breads do after its been nuked in the microwave. We ordered the mini miso salmon and to my surprise, the piece of salmon was just TINY! I've been coming here since I was in college which is a long long time ago. I'll miss the views, the great servers that we have met and the food from the past. We certainly won't miss the subpar food which has been the norm here lately. They run into a little issues some days when they are busy and understaffed but sadly that is the case for most fast food establishments these days. Ah, Zippy's. This is like going back to your parents house for dinner after being away for many years. You don't quite remember how the food tastes, how the food looks, and how much you actually miss their food. Zippy's was like that for me. I used to go to it quite frequently when I was in high school. It was THE hangout spot after prep football games, win or lose (usually), or after hours of intense basketball games with my friends. I've pretty much tried the entire menu since I like to try different things, but after 15+ years, I don't remember! And I have never thought about going there since. Back to the present day, my wife said she wanted Fried Chicken! I started to think about several places and searched on Yelp, but all of them are in town, so nothing was quick and convenient. Wait a minute! Zippy's has fried chicken! Can order online too? Nice! Curbside pickup? Even better! Zippy's menu has not changed one bit. Everything offered is pretty much the same 15 years ago. Besides the price! $3.35 for one piece of fried chicken! Obviously, ordering one piece isn't the best deal. The more, the better. There's a 9-, 15-, and 21-pack. We opted for the 9-pack for $25 total. After placing an order online, it gives you a choice to pick up ASAP or at a specific time. If ASAP, it'll tell you the estimated time your order will be ready, so you don't need to rush there. This Zippy's is located in the Koko Marina Shopping Center in Hawaii Kai. It's all the way in the back corner. There's plenty of parking on that side. I believe it's still takeout only, but you can sit on the outdoor tables and enjoy the view of the marina. Picking up was easy. You should receive an email after you place your order. It'll have a link to press when you arrive and parked in the designated stalls right in front. The person who brought out our food was friendly and upbeat. The smell coming out of the box was intoxicating. It was so hard to not just grab a fried chicken and start eating while I was driving, but I held on for the 15 minutes to drive home, change clothes, and wash hands for 20 seconds. Just like eating a home cooked meal made by your parents or grandparents, the first bite of the crispy and tasty skin and moist and tender chicken brought back a flood of memories, a sense of comfort, a warmth, an ease, a familiarity, a calm. Perhaps I'm exaggerating. Now by all means, it's not the best fried chicken. It wasn't packed with flavor, or deep fried nicely. There were some dry parts. Some parts were fried too much to a dark brown. Some parts needed taste. Those are minor issues. Overall, still a dang pretty good piece of fried chicken with a familiar taste and texture. read more
