Went here for lunch on my boyfriend's birthday because it's a new cozy lunch favorite of ours. I enjoyed my sandwich, it was pretty simple but simple is great. The highlight for me was actually the little bit of potato salad they gave us on the side, it's quite delicious, probably my favorite potato salad I've had. The people behind the counter are always super friendly, both times I've gone they've complimented me on some part of my outfit which is very sweet. The Sweet Pete - with bacon, caramelized onions, and cheese on pumpernickel brad ($4.25) - was satiating and a good size. The omelettes, which include home fries, are definitely more substantial. The meat lover's was delicious. I felt like it took a while to get our food - their kitchen is small - so be sure to consider that when you order. The iced coffee was only so-so. This place is so good. I've had a lot of different items, but the Chicken Cutlet with bacon, cheese, and chipotle sauce on Ciabatta is life changing. Get the fries too if you have nothing else planned for the day. The only negative is that this place closes pretty early, so it's difficult to eat here unless it's your day off. read more

I'm a sucker for a good sandwich and always enjoy trying local places. Based on the reviews I gave this place a try and was not disappointed. I got the #10. This sandwich was packed! I was expecting sliced deli meat .... instead I got freshly roasted slices of REAL TURKEY! The salad had great flavor, the cheese was perfect and I had it quick! It was busy and they still had my sandwich in less than 5 minutes! It even comes with a pickle. This will for sure be a place I stop at again. Hands down, this is the best sandwich shop in all of New Haven. I first discovered Zoi's a couple years ago when they were still on Orange St and was immediately impressed with the quality of their ingredients. When I moved out of CT, Zoi's was one of those places I immediately visited any time I came back. Fast forward to today and their sandwiches haven't changed a bit. While Zoi's is now at a bigger location just around the corner from their original location, their sandwiches have remained consistently awesome over the years. I was at first skeptical of a deli place near Yale -- thought it would be a boring spot just for a pass by brunch. Zoi's proved me wrong and reversed that impression 180 degrees! Ordered # 6 - Tarragon Chicken Salad with Granny Smith apple bits, candied walnuts and plenty of greens, but I think that should be # 1 !!! The complementary salad and rye bread are accentuated with sweet and tart hits of apple, teased with the nicely cooked chicken. The big kahuna burger brought a slightly saltier taste to the mix but none too intimidating. They are a perfect quick lunch before we shot off to the art museum nearby and the plenty of ice water brought in by the pitcher prepared us for the 100+ F blistering day outside. The service is friendly and prompt, and the waitresses kept the water flowing. On top of the counter, there's a small sign that says "This is our happy place". Been there only once, but it surely feels like it! Highly recommended if you're visiting New Haven. read more

Delicious breakfast sandwiches, yummy smoothies and really great, friendly service. As an out of towner I was super pleased with this find.

Nothing fancy or particularly out of the ordinary, but reliably gets the job done when you're hankering for deli-style breakfast on a weekend morning in downtown New Haven (the options are otherwise somewhat limited). The homefries are a notable standout: Cooked to a perfect golden brown, crispy on the outside, tender (almost creamy) on the inside, really nicely seasoned. I'm something of a breakfast potatoes snob--so many places serve 'em burnt, mushy, bland, or (somehow) all of the above--but Zoi's has never disappointed me on this front. Omelettes, pancakes, etc. are perfectly solid, but nothing to write home about. As for breakfast sandwiches, I believe I may have stumbled into something truly beautiful, which I can't recommend highly enough: I'll call it the "Mean Dean x Big Mouth mashup" (see attached picture). It's bacon, over-hard fried eggs, white American cheese, caramelized onions, hot cherry bomb peppers, and spicy mustard, all on Texas toast (structured double-decker-style to keep the bacon crispy). It's a damn good breakfast sandwich as-is, though I think you could make it even better by subbing sharp (ideally orange) cheddar for the white American cheese, and over-easy or over-medium eggs (which would've soaked into the toast real nicely) for the over-hard egg. Only other gripe is that the "Texas toast" is not especially "Texas-y"--i.e., it could use some more garlic and butter, as it's presently not all that different from plain old regular toast. But yeah, try this sandwich. read more

This quick service breakfast/lunch spot in New Haven is great. My husband and I found it (through Yelp) after a morning trip to Ikea. It's quick counter service with a bunch of tables. It's fresh, delicious food. Great egg sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, salads, etc. Nice option is you're looking for something fast but fresh. It was busy the entire time we were there (Yale students and business people), but the staff keeps the flow going. They have gluten free options as well. We almost went to a dive bar around the corner for a burger and I'm so glad we didn't. We left full, everything was fast, fresh and delicious and didn't spend more than $20! A really sweet joint with good food and great service. We came here after exploring around Yale University. We wanted something not too heavy and found that there were a great variety of salad and sandwich options here, so we decided to come check it out. The ambience was very nice, you come in, place your order, sit down, and they will bring the food to you. There's a good amount of seating so good for large groups. My friend ordered a salad with chicken in it. When we received our food, her salad had no chicken in it. She brought it to the attention of one of the employees and they were very apologetic and immediately went to take care of it. The owner's dad came to us and asked if everything was okay. He was extremely sweet and friendly and we ended up having a good conversation. I believe that because of our experience of the service, we thoroughly were impressed. Although the food was not over the top, the service really left me with a good impression. I will definitely come back here if I ever am in New Haven. read more

This place is right around the corner from my business's New Haven office and is my go to place for breakfast when I'm down there. Good size portions, always cooked right. And good coffee too. We also recently ordered lunch there and it was a little bit of a mixed bag. I enjoyed the buffalo chicken sandwich, but my dining companion found the soup just too salty. A matter of taste perhaps? They're moving around the corner soon which is great to offer more seating and a larger place. Definitely excited about that. Be wary of ordering online; when I arrived, they hadn't noticed the e-mail notifying them of a new order. Should do a better job coordinating this. I stopped by Zoi's on Orange to get a breakfast sandwich around 11:30am two weeks ago. Having seen that the Mean Dean was one of their most popular items, I was curious to try it, so I ordered it ($5.50). It took a bit longer to make than the lunch sandwiches ordered by several other customers before and after me. However, the staff kept things moving, and before too long, it came out, and I was able to get on my way, since I was taking it to go. The Mean Dean is a spicy breakfast sandwich consisting of two eggs with ham, cheese, onions, spicy mustard, and hot peppers. Given that I'm not a heat freak, I woudn't normally choose the spiciest of breakfast sandwiches, but whenever possible, I try to order the most popular and unique item on the menu. As others have said, the Mean Dean is very flavorful, and the heat does add a nice kick to the sandwich. That said, it *was* a bit spicy for my taste, personally. Nevertheless, I found it pretty enjoyable. The lunch options that I saw people ordering looked quite tasty, so I'll have to come back sometime soon to order from the lunch menu. During my visit, there was a steady stream of customers and several catering orders, so it seems that they do a good business. Review in full: I have held out on writing this review for about two years now. I am not entirely certain why but I have experienced a lot in that time and yet I have always come back to Zoi's. Their menu is expansive and I have yet to have a bad sandwich from them. Honestly take a look. Upwards of 25 sandwiches and while nothing really leaps off of the page you will be more than pleased with whatever you pick up. One of my favorite sandwiches from Zoi's is a breakfast sandwich called the Mean Dean. The mean dean is an egg sandwich served on a pita dressed with mustard. I tried it simply for the novelty factor of that alone and was pleasantly surprised. It really is worth a taste. As I mentioned earlier, I have been visiting Zoi's infrequently for about two years now. I am not certain if it has always been there but recently I noticed that they have a patio out back. This is great because it puts this location level with NIca's which I consider to be their competitor (so far as sandwiches go). I have some reservations about the five stars here. Zoi's feels like a 4.75. They just get it right. Every time. The food is uncomplicated yet unique and inexpensive. I just wish they would have better hours of operation. The #10, which was reuben-like with loads of fresh-roasted turkey, cole slaw, swiss, thousand island, and bacon on rye, was out-of-this-world good. The #11 had potential with a tasty combo of housemade chicken cutlet, mozzarella, roasted red peppers, and pesto. The pesto fell a bit flat, however, which kept the sammy from knocking it out of the park. The potato salad that accompanies each sandwich was a lovely surprise - mild and creamy with a small hit of dill. I like to think I caught them on a really off morning. I came in at 8 AM to get a breakfast sandwich and placed my order for a Triple Double. Twenty-seven minutes later, with no sandwich received, I went to the counter to ask how much longer it would be. I love goat cheese, fruit, and walnuts in my salads. There's a place not far from Zoi's that I would frequent for lunch because of their salad. Unfortunately they went down hill, started getting limp lettuce, then they started skimping on the goat cheese, and the last straw was a moldy walnut, which they vehemently denied. So I had to find a new place for my salads. That's when I found Zoi's. The place was packed even though it was 2 o'clock, past the normal lunch rush. I was pleased to see that it seemed popular, but worried because I was on lunch break, and had to get back to work. My worry was unfounded, because almost as soon as I walked in, someone came up, and took my order. Wow. I ordered my lunch to go, the baby spinach salad with grilled chicken, strawberries, granny smith apples, walnuts, and, of course, goat cheese. I also ordered a Greek frappe, yum! The food came out fast. I was literally in the restaurant for no more than 5 minutes, even though they were busy, and the food! Oh my, the salad was excellent. Beautiful, fresh spinach, not a wilted piece to be found, the fruit was crisp and fresh, and there was a lovely, sizeable helping of goat cheese piled on top.
