I ordered avgolemono and moussaka, two completely bog-standard Greek options. When the food came to the table, the avgolemono looked like a Thai chicken soup. Thin, no cream to it at all. It was so bizarre that I took it back to the kitchen to check for sure. They said it was the right thing, and while it tasted ok, I would never order it again. Then, the moussaka. It was as if I were eating a hockey puck. So overcooked. No flavor, all crunch. No, no, no -- never again. Such a cute authentic Greek cafe in DuPont circle! Zorba's Cafe is a family owned business with such friendly and helpful employees. Their outdoor seating is definitely a vibe, but they have great indoor seating available as well. The entire cafe has a very homey feel. For food I tried their chicken shish kabob which was so delicious. The rice, salad and bread that came with it made for the perfect meal. When you enter you go straight to the counter to order your food. Then you'll get a number and you can seat yourself while waiting for your food to arrive. Nice little spot in DuPont. You order up at the register and pick your seat and they bring the food. We got the hummus which was okay and some beers which made the experience. We always stay looking for mythos and are rarely able to find it and this little spot has it!!!!!!!!! Service was quick and friendly. Baklava is SWEEEEEEEET! Oh my word... I noticed Zorba's Cafe while walking back to the Dupont Metro from an errand. I've wanted to try the Mediterranean desert for many years, and luckily for me, it was on their menu posted outside. $7 got me a decently-sized slice about the size of a croissant, picked up at their deli-style counter. Typically made of dough, pistachios, butter and a lemon-y simple syrup, the baklava reminded me of king cake with a hint of ooey-gooey. But because of the sweetness, I don't think I could ever eat more than one slice. So I've gotten baklava off my bucket list, thanks to Zorba's Cafe, and I absolutely love it. But I'll definitely need to let my taste buds recover. read more

Made the mistake of choosing this place because it was conveniently located near my hotel and because it seemed very popular. It is an "order first, take a seat and wait for order to arrive" place. Nothing fancy but I was at least expecting it to be tasty. I like Greek food very much so if it remotely resembles it, I'm usually satisfied. Not this place. Ordered meatballs over rice with salad and it was awful. Meatballs were hard and burnt. Rice was a spoonful and cold and salad looked like I got the last part of the lettuce that had been left on the counter to be discarded. And what's with the "teeth breaking" piece of bread they give you with no butter? Service was horrible with surly waiters that definitely hate working there. They don't accept tips; they should rethink that. Inside it's hot and crowded with empty tables full of dishes that had not been bussed. In celebration of International Women's Day, my office decided to order lunch from Zorba's (as they are woman owned). Our food was ready very shortly after ordering and was well packaged and labeled. Overall I think the office was happy with what we ordered, there were lots of options to satisfy everyone's tastes. I got the Yero Plate which which comes with fries and a salad. For $18 it was not great value for money. I live up in Baltimore, so obviously I am used to prices being about 20-30% less, but a similar meal at my local favorite would be both 30% less expensive and 50% more food. I've lived in DC for 8 years and lived around the corner from Zorba's for awhile but never went, which I now regret. The food there is delicious and very affordable! They have a pretty extensive menu of Greek dishes that go beyond the typical assortment of gyros. They had some dishes that I didn't think I could get in the US at restaurants like loukaniko, psari plaki, and fasolia. They also had tons of desserts like loukoumades and other daily specials that change frequently! My friend and I sat outside on their patio on a sunny day, which has a ton of space. The food was absolutely delicious and I was thoroughly satisfied by the vegetarian plate. The spanakopita had a delicious filling and was perfectly crispy, crunchy on the outside. Order at the counter and then prepare to be tantalized by the parade of excellent and authentic Hellenic cuisine - lamb, chicken, orzo, hummus and grape leaves all vying for first billing. There's absolutely no pretense here but the outside patio seems like a great way to spend an hour people watching (when the temperature is below 90.) I visited Zorba's per a recommendation and I was pleasantly surprised! I've walked past it a few times and had assumed it was a hole in the wall greek food restaurant with limited seating, but after entering I realized the restaurant was two stories with ample seating! The menu had a decent amount of options and I ended up ordering the aegean salad with chicken soulvaki. One thing to note about Zorba's is you place your order at the front, there is no waiting service. I didn't mind this at all, however, most of the food items were $18+ which I found to be a bit steep for the service. My salad was delicious however the serving size could've been larger for the price of it all. Overall, if you're looking for quality, authentic greek food -- this is the place to come. It's atmosphere leaves something to be desired, so wouldn't recommend coming here for a dinner date but for maybe for a nice lunch or casual dinner with friends! read more

Tasty lunch! I was very pleased with my small Greek salad and small Tabouli, which came with 2 pita halves and a roll. Everything tasted really fresh and lite. The tabouli had a perfect blend of chopped parsley, tomatoes, onion, olive oil, lemon juice, and a hint of seasoning to give it pizzazz. I personally like eating the tabouli with a tear of pita. The Greek salad had ample crispy lettuce, tomato slices, some red onion, pepperoni, kalamatas, and a healthy sprinkling of feta and oregano on top. The dressing, though I got it on the side, was an amazing complement to both the salad and for dipping the bread. Speaking of which, the roll looked pretty boring but tasted great! Hard exterior but nice and soft on the inside. My colleagues went for heartier options like souvlaki, shish kebab, arinaki, keftethes, soup, and falafel plate. Everyone (all 8 of us!) left feeling satisfied. We enjoyed the added bonus of being able to dine outside on the patio in late November, with Greek music playing to enhance the atmosphere. read more

I got the pork combination plate. The first time I got it, it was good but the meat was a little dry. The second time however was perfection. That's when I really #understood the hype. The pork was so yummy, delicious, flavorful and juicy. The rice was perfect. Service is fast and easy. Everyone is nice. You order inside and they give you a number and then they bring you your food. I can see the appeal of Zorba's. It's a lovely looking building and the patio seems like a great place to sit out with a group. I came in alone of an evening after arriving in town and reading the reviews. It's fast-casual, which appealed, and I haven't had great Greek food for a while. You order inside at the till and they give you a buzzer. The menu options are standard Greek fare, and they have all the drinks laid out in front for you to choose from. I went for the pastitsio, which comes with a side salad and a roll. I also got taramasalata, one of my absolute favorite foods and one which I struggle to find in California. The server was friendly. The service area also has a water station and condiments etc. My buzzer went off after about 10 minutes and everything was presented on a tray with utensils provided. There were plenty of seats inside but the patio was busy. The food was just ok. I think of taramasalata as primarily creamy with a little freshness, but this one was all out tangy. Must be a different style, but it wasn't what I was after. It wasn't bad, and there was plenty of bread. Good portion for the price, and definitely better for sharing. The side salad was also very tart for my taste. The pastitsio had been unevenly reheated so the top was a bit cold in spots and the bottom had an unpleasant crust on it. I get that it's not the kind of dish you make to order every time but it wasn't well presented at all. The meat mixture just kinda fell out and everything crumbled to pieces. It tasted good so I'm sure it's delicious when it's fresh but it didn't hang together properly as a meal. I didn't get to the roll since that was already a lot of stodgy food. It's all a bit of a shame because I sense that they can do much better. I think Zorba's is definitely a better place to go with a group - maybe get a spread sampler and something that's made to order, have a glass of wine or two on the patio. read more

I've been to Zorba's Cafe twice in the last month. It's great that in both instances, I went for early dinners and received my orders very quickly. For the unfamiliar, you walk to the back of the restaurant and place your order. You will be handed a number to designate your order. A server will find you and bring you your food. That's it. I barely sat down and got my food in the second instance, which was awesome because I was starving. I'm pretty predictable and when it comes to Greek food, I like the gyro, avgolemono, and spanakopita, which I had both times. My dining companions had the gyro plate, and to me, they looked like deconstructed gyros with fries. I also like that inside the setting is cozy, warm, and pretty quiet so catching up with friends here is great. It does get louder as the night goes on, but before 6 pm, it's manageable. For the gyro, I wish there was a bit more meat and sauce. It left a little more to be desired. Avgolemono is great. Nice chunks of chicken and vegetables with a lemon flavor. Spanakopita is also excellent although served with a roll, which I wish came with butter. read more
