Continuing my tour of "cheap pizza joints" in NYC, I popped into $1.50 Fresh Pizza for lunch during a recent work trip. And yes, I also too lament the death of $.99 pizza places which used to be ubiquitous, but factoring in inflation an increase to $1.50 is not bad. This is definitely a no frills place. There is a small foyer/waiting area once you walk in...and don't be surprised if there is a line out the door. But I've never had to wait more than 10-15 min, so it's tolerable. There are two narrow counters on either side of the room where you can stand and eat your slices. The menu is also affixed to the walls in large enough font, that even for my diminished eye sight, makes reading easy. Once you get the front of the line, there will usually be 1-2 cheese pizzas in the small window below the register. If you want speciality slices like pepperoni, sausage, etc., go ahead and place your order and stand to the side as the back kitchen prepares your food. Again, you'll have to wait about 10-15 minutes. I usually will get the special (which as of this review) is two cheese slices and a can of soda for $4. NOTE: This place is CASH ONLY so don't visit unless you've stopped by an ATM first. This is obviously not "gourmet" pizza, but I'd say it's the authentic NY slice I grew up eating. The crust could be a bit more charred, but the kitchen is cranking out the pie as fast as possible, so you'll usually be assured of "fresh-ish" slices. There is a decent amount of cheese and do what New Yorkers do and top each slice with garlic powder, chili flakes, and Italian seasoning which is found on the side counters. It gets super crowded inside with customers who represent a cross section of NY. I've seen people in business suits, droves of students, Uber/Lyft drivers, and of course, tourists. If there is no space, you can take a short 7-8 min walk to Central Park and eat on a bench. But contrary to popular belief, most New Yorkers are actually courteous and will vacate their spot at the counter once their finished. Does this place serve the best pizza? No...but for the price and being located in Mid-Town, I'd say it's perfect to stop in if you're looking for a quick bite. read more
