I stopped in at this cafe after an eye appointment next door. It's very cute and cozy and wasn't too loud even though most of the tables were full. It was also nice and warm, which was very welcome since it was in the 30s outside. The cashier took my order quickly and was very nice. I got a hazelnut hot chocolate and the original egg sandwich, both to go. The hot chocolate was good and had great chocolate flavor - it didn't taste like it was from a powder. The egg sandwich was so good. It was exactly what I wanted - egg, cheddar, toasted bun, and a delicious garlic butter spread. The garlic butter was absolutely delicious and I wish I could take a bottle of it home with me. The employees all seemed to get along great and were joking around with each other and chatting happily while working. They all seemed very happy while working, which was refreshing to see in food service when so many employees are treated so poorly. I will definitely come back here in the future to try more menu items and to spend some time sitting to eat my food when I have more time. I'll be thinking about that garlic butter for a while too.

This is a cute little locally owned coffee shop-style cafe that offers sweet and savory crepes, sandwiches, breakfast items all day, and vegetarian and vegan options. They also have an impressive short list of regional craft beers, a few wines, and a nice list of loose leaf hot teas. The staff has been friendly and efficient both times we dropped in to meet friends there this week. We enjoyed several different hot teas, a nice pint of ale, and two of their vegan option meals: the Vegan Break burger with a locally made vegan patty, and the Ranchero Crepe, which comes with a variety of choices for a side. Seating is available along the back wall inside or on tables on the open patio when it's nice outside. Parking is easy to snag in the attached lot. I hear that they sometimes host live music, and they were playing pleasant background music during both of our visits. A pleasant atmosphere overall.

It would be nice if reviewers who weren't happy with the service EIGHT YEARS ago would come by and clean up their messes. 16 Tons continues to provide multiple bennies to us locals: good grub, good coffee and beer, relaxed service esp when there are crepes involved, and THE BEST smaller scale OUTDOOR CONCERT setting in Eugene. The staff are friendly, attentive & working hard. Get on down and refresh your freakin' browsers, y'all. 16 Tons gets it done.

Time for an updated review to say that this place is still one of my favorite cafés in Eugene. Lots of seating, both inside and outside. The music is good and not too loud, you can easily have a conversation with someone or work on a laptop with an appropriate amount of background noise, so it's a good place to catch up with a friend, work on a laptop, or read a book. The menu is robust and they offer tasty lattes made with Wandering Goat coffee, a great selection of beer and cider and wine on-tap, and great food options: everything from sweet pastries to savory breakfast sandwiches to lunch/dinner options and small bites, too. I generally find the staff to be friendly and mellow. On my most recent visit, I got a 12 oz pour of a favorite beer and my friend and I split an order of nachos and cowboy caviar with chips. I like that this place has a little bit of everything and is great any time of the day!

Great place for casual food. The savory crepes are awesome. I'd never had a savory crepe before visiting 16 Tons, thought they were only for dessert. The coffee is amazeballs and I didn't even need sugar in it, which is rare for me. Patio is nice for hanging outdoors and the staff is friendly. In the evenings there's often live music and you can grab a unique beer on tap too. Something for everyone. Highly recommend.

Beautiful artwork and great coffee. A perfect combination!

This place was a gem, quiet, good atmosphere, and the breakfast was on point. Definitely going to try it again.

Terrible service, too much salt. Owner definitely knows everything about anything. 0/2 for both locations. 10/10 would not recommend.

Some of the other reviews were negative on their food...but our food was fantastic. The burgers were moist and not greasy. The waffle cut fries were hot and crispy. The bartenders work non stop to get your drinks and food out quickly. My daughter loved the churro style donuts (but they are messy). The decor is a D&D dive bar scene....so many things to look at as you wait for bingo to start. They just changed the rules and you do have to pay $1.00 per person to play bingo...but where else can you get that type of entertainment for a dollar. We can't wait to return.

At one point, the bartender disappeared for approximately fifteen minutes, leaving several patrons waiting without acknowledgment. When she finally returned, she casually mentioned she had been on a personal phone call. A second woman then stepped behind the bar, immediately clarifying that she was not, in fact, a bartender. When I expressed concern about the extended absence and lack of service--something I would consider standard feedback in any hospitality setting--I was abruptly told I was "speaking badly" about the staff and was asked to leave. This kind of defensiveness and disregard for patrons is deeply unprofessional, especially for an establishment that positions itself within a community where communication, accountability, and mutual respect are paramount. Eugene has a growing nightlife and alternative culture scene, and many people--locals and visitors alike--expect spaces that uphold those values. Based on my experiences, I cannot recommend The Serpent & the Sparrow. There are other venues in town that offer a far more welcoming environment, competent service, and a genuine respect for their patrons.

Addi herself waited on us and was super personable and sweet. I heard her across the cafe ask after a customer's new baby -- he hadn't been in for a year, she just remembered. A homeless guy came in and she listened to his rambling story attentively, then got him some food and sent him on his way. She's a gem. The food was pretty typical greasy spoon breakfast, which is exactly what I wanted. Solid meal and much appreciated at that hour. I think I heard then say they opened at 4am. On our first morning in our new town, we went to The Original Pancake House for breakfast. It was a simple meal, but one we were grateful we could afford. When we asked for the check, our server smiled and told us someone had already paid for it. That small act of kindness made me feel like I truly belonged in our new home. It reminded me that even in an unfamiliar place, there were good people who cared about others. Since that day, every time we visit The Original Pancake House, we make it a point to pay it forward whenever we can. It's our way of honoring the kindness that meant so much to us and has stuck with me. Beyond the beautiful memory, the food is incredible. It's hands down the best breakfast I've ever had. Comfort food that tastes like it's made with love. You must try the Dutch baby! The ladies who work there are always so warm and welcoming, making every visit feel like coming home. The Original Pancake House in Eugene is a charming, family-friendly spot with genuine warmth and stellar coffee. The casual, lively vibe makes it feel like the proper brunch destination you'd hope for from a legendary breakfast joint. We ordered their hero dish--a side of buttermilk pancakes--and the Irish Omelette. The pancakes delivered real flavor: fluffy, tender, with classic buttermilk tang. My only critique? They arrived cool, likely from sitting in the warmth window a bit too long. Off the griddle, these would shine. The Irish Omelette was more disappointing. Designed to be airy and light with corned beef and potatoes inside, ours was overcooked and rubbery--far from the delightful, pillowy texture it should be. For a restaurant with this history, execution should be consistent. The coffee and service were warm and attentive, which goes a long way. 3/5 stars. Worth visiting for atmosphere, especially if your pancakes arrive hot. Try during slower service to avoid the window-sit fate. The Portland location executes at a higher level.
