Ok first the good - came on a Saturday and was seated pretty quickly. Our server was friendly and amazing. She worked her a@$ off as the restaurant got busier and the demands piled on. We were a fairly large group but she was really attentive and made sure everyone had what they needed. Unfortunately everyone felt like their food was "ok" but not something they'd come back for. The fries were homestyle and yummy. Mac n' cheese was a little dry. Veggie patty was beet based which was...interesting. Grilled cheese was fine. It is with a sad heart I write this review. I have been holding out hope that things would turn around for this place, but sadly after my latest experience, I've come to the conclusion it won't. I'm sad to say the old 24 Diner I used to love is gone. It used to be a cool 24 hour place that could be relied on for great food no matter what time of day or night, a friendly and attentive staff, and just good vibes all around. Sadly, all of that has changed now. Almost everything we've had the last couple of times we went was bland, overcooked, soggy or just all around but good at all. Chicken was extremely bland and greasy but cold still. The fries had been a soggy, greasy pile that no amount of ketchup or salt could save. The one and only thing that has lead me to leave 1 extra star is the corn fritters. They have always been my go to and they still taste about the same as always. What's worse is the service has gone so downhill I couldn't even believe it. We saw our server 1 time about 10 min after being sat and she didn't greet us or anything. Just walked up and asked "y'all want anything?" We ordered and then never saw her again until it was time for the crack. Extremely sad to see a place I used to spend so many later nights go down this way. read more

Has success spoiled Cafe 24? Possibly yes. In the early days, nearly everything about the food was legendary. Surefire guarantees of nearly sell-out crowds on most days can allow management to do a certain amount of profit-taking. The meat content of the hash is now unimpressive. Potatoes are cheaper than meat. A featured dessert - eggnog blondie - was nearly tasteless except for a ton of cinnamon gratuitously shoveled on top as a rescue measure. Vegetable dishes were better, but you are not here for the vegetable dishes. Three years ago, the place was awesome. A year ago, the place was ho hum. Today the place is mediocre. I'm sad this place doesn't have better average reviews... We've been a few times and always were really satisfied. Disclaimer: We're always coming here as a late night dining option, so I've never eaten here during actual breakfast/brunch hours. So...maybe the daytime experience isn't as good..? Shrug. Anywho, my man and I typically roll in around 10pm or later. We have never waited longer than a few minutes to be seated. We usually try to get a spot at the counter. It has a fun vibe and very excellent, very attentive service. My guy often has weird requests with food, and our server has never batted an eyelash and remembers every weird detail without writing any of it down. Love the fried chicken, love the burgers, love the steak. Wash it down with a nice cold beer, and there's not much that could be better! read more

After moving to Austin a few months ago, I set out to find go-to restaurants with amazing food, friendly service, and a relaxed vibe where I wouldn't feel rushed. 24 Diner has become that spot for me. I visit every weekend, thanks to the fantastic staff and mouthwatering dishes like their burgers, jalapeño remoulade sauce, Caesar salad, and chicken and waffles. Came here after a show. We ordered drinks first. I got a iced chai. Which was extremely watered down. My husband ordered a water we then ordered our food. I ordered the breakfast plate platter with a half waffle with vanilla brown sugar butter. My favorite part of this waffle order. The eggs and potatoes were good the sausage was hard and overcooked. My husband ordered the steak and frites which he loved. He also order a strawberry shake which I could have drank like 20 of. It was delicious. We also ordered the corn fritters but they came after our food so we took them to go. I ordered a piece of the Kentucky bourbon pie to go . It was like a giant chocolate chip cookie. I was expecting more like a pecan pie texture. It's a bit on tne pricey side but the food is good. The service was also pretty great. read more

24 Diner had definitely gone down since our last review. We were here last Thursday night and it was DEAD. Tumbleweeds. At one point, we were the only people in the restaurant, and still, our food managed to arrive before our drinks did. Such a pet peeve and the sign of terrible FOH management. Also a pet peeve: booths that are taller than benches, so you end up feeling like a toddler sitting at the table. We ordered the chili cheese fries app. The fries were limp and stale and the chili was questionable. The whole thing seemed warmed up. The small kale salad wasn't bad, and the patty melt was OK, but the meat was sort of dry (side of bacon-collared greens were too watery but the flavor was at least there). The best thing we had was the maple milkshake to finish. Service was fine, but should have been out-of-the-park considering that there were, like, four people in the restaurant total. This place used to hopping'--perhaps it just never recovered "post"-Covid? We don't see ourselves coming back. read more

My friends were visiting from Atlanta so after a night at the Butterfly Bar, we went to 24 diner for brunch... can you say mimosas??? Of course the mimosas didn't fail us. I had some of my husbands biscuits and they were amazing! My hash was just okay- a little salty for my taste! Perhaps if I had more of a hangover, it would work but I really could only eat the egg and had to leave the rest. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their meals, though! When my gf first suggested we go to a 'diner', I was a little appalled. I'm from NJ and diners are usually grease pits that serve food you would only be excited to eat at 4am after a long, long night of drinking. She said, it's not like that I swear, they use all organic, locally grown ingredients. So I said, okay, I trust your judgment and off we went. We walked inside and I immediately thought of a diner from the 1950s. It was a small, pastel-colored dinner with 8-10 plastic chairs at the bar and an open casual dining room that could seat maybe 50 people tops. The menu feated sandwiches, salads, and an all-day breakfast menu. We started with two glasses of wine and a cheese plate. All of their wines were domestic, (California, Oregon, and Texas). Not a great selection, but okay for a diner. My wine was okay, but my gf was upset her red wine was chilled. A few minutes after our wine arrived came our cheese plate. It came with three cheese, and sides of pickles, jam, and chutney along with a toasted breadbasket of white and multigrain bread. Yum. We ended up splitting a veggie sandwich with two sides of mac and cheese to complete our dinner. I really appreciated how many vegetarian selections were on the menu. The sandwich was pretty large and filling and very tasty. The mac and cheese was good (not great, but pleasing to say the least). Most people in the diner were devouring breakfast! We came in at a busy time, but the service was very nice and kind despite it. The food however left much to be desired. One of our orders came out incorrect but it was alright as we got a lot of extra food that we didn't order? (Specifically we ordered just side of a waffle and a side of bacon but got the waffle meal thing with sausage? So idk what happened behind the scenes but I guess whatever). We also ordered a macaroni and cheese that came out bland and lukewarm. (An issue I noticed in another review but thought it was rectified). I personally ordered a half order of chicken and waffle and it came out on approximately the smallest possible plate. The waffle was a bit hard but I'm sure it was the fact it was a yeasted waffle? The butter was delightful as was the habanero sauce on the table. As soon as I remember the name I'm hunting it down and buying a bottle for myself. 24 Diner seems to have always been phenomenal, and I don't see it declining anytime soon. Their waffles are dense and perfectly sweet yet bread-y..would recommend getting the sausage on the side! The potato breakfast hash is to die for, and the fact that they offer you yellow bird sauce to go along is just the cherry on top. Their food is a 2... but they have something on the menu that's a 6... I like to focus on the positives, I like to be optimistic, and so I'm not going to write about it being overrated, nor am I going to go into detail on why I say the food is a 2... What I am about to do, however, is put you on game, youngblood. I'm being serious... A little history: Austin TX, HAD 4 acceptable places to get a peanut butter shake: 1) shake shack -- who got rid of it due to peanut allergies 2 years ago (and I'm still salty about it) 2) Pterry's -- who has run it as their shake of the month in September for the past three years (I'm telling all the secrets right now, cats out of the bag) 3) Burger Bar -- which it's not on the menu but they'll whip you one up and they do great work AND LASTLY: You guessed it, 24 Diner. I think it's technically a chocolate peanut butter shake, but they use such a delicious peanut butter that I think you can only get a Whole Foods. Always a letdown. Menu selection is interesting & seems delicious, but over 10+ years of occasionally ordering from here... Tonight was the last time. It was a simple order (trying to set them up for success), but they failed miserably. The order was a side of fries, a vanilla milkshake, and the chocolate chip bourbon pecan pie. I didn't check the reviews or rating before I came here. 3.5 stars seems about right. This place lacks flavor. It's a nice setting. Some of the staff (the portly bald man) is a bit off-putting. He seemed like he was kind of in charge so I can see why some of the other staff members were lacking in energy or enthusiasm. I appreciate girls behind the bar, really being super invested in making sure that my drink was acceptable. I think the face I didn't know I was making as I sipped said it all. I ordered the 24 Rum punch and I just never thought rum punch could be that boring. The bartender offered to spice it up for me a couple times and I finally obliged her offer. The cereal crusted French toast looked like it was going to be full of flavor but it was also dull. It wasn't even particularly sweet (that would have been the easy flavoring route). The feral added a crunch by no umph. The berry compote was muted. I also ordered a side of scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese (the cheese was just some bag shredded cheese they dropped on top of the two unseasoned scrambled eggs at the end). The potatoes looked very seasoned but come to find out it was simply a bit of red paprika for the look. Nothing was horrible here, I must say. Everything was forgettable. I was reminded that it was a dinner. The setting had character. The food did not. It was not worth the 30 plus minute wait, but I did buy a few records next door so...yeah. read more

Went here for brunch with my co-worker since we were in town for a conference. Wait changes pretty quickly, called ahead of time and was told there was no wait, by the time we got there (20 min) there was a 20 min wait, then by the time we finished waiting there was a 40 min wait. We ended up sitting at the bar, which was empty. Had the French toast, which looked good, but I think it was undercooked and seemed runny inside, the blueberries were a good addition. My co-worker had the goat cheese frittata which she said was okay, but the biscuit and strawberry jam was good. Service was okay. Women's bathroom is a single stall, which was decent. My husband & I have gone here 3 times now since moving to Austin at the beginning of August because it is such a walkable little Sunday brunch spot for us. And it has not once disappointed. We always walk right in & sit down when getting there around 9-9:30am on Sunday morning (try to beat the hungover from Sat. night crowd) The service is so quick & efficient. I'm not kidding - I think we were in & out in under 30minutes last time we went. We have now tried the Breakfast Platter, Egg Sandwich, & Chicken & Waffle. While all were incredible - the egg sandwich has been our favorite!! My husband is not a big sweet person & he found the chicken & waffle to be a little bit too much, but I LOVE sweets - so, it was perfect to me. I even went "off script" once & asked them to make me just an egg white scramble with veggies & got a side of toast & fruit and they did not hesitate! My first time having brunch here! It was an 1hr 45 minute wait. Don't come if you're already hangry, but if you're prepared to wait then this it is a nice place for brunch! We sat outside, and our server came right away, our food came shortly after. The food tasted great! Mimosa was really good too! My friends got the Bloody Mary, but none of them liked it, so they opted for mimosas for their 2nd drink. Other friend got a lime margarita which tasted like it was all lime and no alcohol. The atmosphere included a welcoming family/friend vibe that created a smooth experience. 24 Diner also has TVs and a full bar to sit at and watch sports games (which is my favorite thing to do). I came here with some friends after golfing and the service was impeccable. I ended up ordering their burgers (way better than I expected). They were thick and had great meat quality! I also ordered the side of fries offered with the burger and they were great and crunchy too! I recommend this place to anyone that loves American food and sports atmospheres with family of friends . 24 is back!!! When 24 Diner first re-opened during the pandemic the place was in bad shape. The service and food suffered from the outage, but they have found their groove. I have been a long time customer and I will continue to come here with friends and family. In fact, some of my family and close friends and I have a tradition to stop here whenever they are in town. It's all good, but the chicken and waffles are the best in town. I don't get the waffles often because it's a lot of food, but I love the frittata. I was really disappointed by the breakfast here. I came with a friend for lunch on a Sunday and after a 45 minute wait we were seated. We shared the veggie hash and waffle breakfast. Veggie hash - average at best. There wasn't much flavor and the broccoli taste was overpowering for some reason. Waffle breakfast - the waffle was super thick and dense, no airy and light like waffles are supposed to be. I asked for a side of blueberries and they tasted very weird. Ugh. We returned here in December 21 and I think they've been hit by 'rona pretty hard, that's my guess. They told us they were short-handed and so we had to wait once we got the table. Not a problem, we're all in this together. But the food was just not on point. Sort of unseasoned. And then the Bloody Mary they served me ranks among the worst drinks I've ever been served. Very un-tasty and no garnish like olives or celery. I took about two sips. It was watery and just mal-seasoned. I never even knew it is possible to mess up a bloody mary. I visited here on a Friday night when I had originally intended to visit a place down the street for pizza. We ended up here and it was a pretty good choice. We got a nice corner booth and were the only group eating inside the restaurant. We were served by someone who was in training and she was doing a great job and was also accompanied by another kind employee. The inside of the restaurant was pretty nice and it is at a convenient location with plenty of parking on North Lamar. I had the 24 veggie burger with some mashed potatoes and it was really good. The burger was really good and the mashed potatoes were as well. We also scored a free dessert that they offered us because it was near closing as we were hear. Get. The. Chicken. And. Waffles. This is is must, not a maybe. My friends and I rolled in around dinner time because it had been one of the places to pop up when I typed in 'waffles'. We ended up all ordering the same thing, a half order of the chicken and waffles. Let me tell you, it was a near-religious experience.
