Recently went to 27th Street Bakery after not going for years. In years past I worked in the area and would stop by frequetly. Anyhow, this past time I went I bought lemon cake, red velvet cake, peach cobbler, and sweet potato pie. I get home, give the wife the red velvet and I had the lemon. The first issue was both cakes were wrapped in plastic and in a plastic container. We unpackage both cakes and they are both stale, hard and taste old. I was so disappointed...The products were so bad the wife threw all items I bought in the trash. I think what makes my experience so bad is for years 27th Street Bakery has been the standard for sweet potato pies...I bought them at the 27th and Central store, in supermarkets, liquor stores and at the store they briefly had on Crenshaw. Needless to say, I dont think I will be returning given other people have had the same experience as me. read more

Southern style desserts are made the way Grandma did. I highly recommend the sweet potato pie but don't sleep on the red velvet cake. There is only street parking but if you order online you can get in and out pretty quickly. The staff is friendly and expedient. This is true even during the holiday rush. read more

My cousin bragged about going to Ralph's to get the best sweet potato pies! I tried the mini pies and couldn't taste any butter in the crust at all and the pie was bland with an aftertaste that wasn't great. Then I tried it again to see if I was being moody or something and bit into a hard piece of potato!? Somehow they never blended the batch I had correctly.... No flavor and barely sweet! The sweet potato pie and pumpkin pie were delicious . Sweet potato pie was actually to die for. I'm not a fan of pecan pie , but my partner is (we order a pecan pie from a different place every year) . We ordered from Gwen restaurant for thanksgiving this year and absolutely not worth the price. However, Jeanette's pecan pie was totally worth the drive (we drove 1 hr for these pies). Wow. This place is amazing. A cozy Black-owned woman-owned bakery right outside DTLA with the most delicious desserts! I grabbed an entire red velvet cake for a work event and there were no crumbs left! So moist and flavorful, and the best part was I needed it within 24 hours and they were able to make it work. Went to this bakery to surprise a family friend with coconut cake that she loves from this place. Upon entering, the staff at the counter was not helpful at all! They were out of coconut cake so we start looking at the other flavors. None of them were labeled so we had to point and ask what was what. The staff wouldn't make any suggestions when we asked. She was very cold, dry, and not helpful at all! We ended up getting the friend some mini sweet potato pies and I got a slice of yellow cake with chocolate icing. The cake was wrapped in saran wrap and in a plastic container. When I got home to try the cake, I noticed some wetness in the layers but thought maybe it was simple syrup. I break off a piece and the cake was dry and stale. Once unraveled, I look closer at the chocolate icing and it was sliding off the cake. I look all around the packaging. There were no dates in addition to the lack of labels. I definitely won't be going back to this place and really hoping the sweet potato pies I dropped off were fresh. I found this place through Yelp! as I was looking for a Pecan pie for Thanksgiving. There was a line but there were no tape lines to indicate patrons must stay 6ft away from each other. At 1st when I walked in it seemed old. But I got over it and tried to see what the prices were. They have paper copies of their menu but I feel they should laminate a few or make some with bigger letters. Their pies are inexpensive but good. I ordered a Pecan Pie and what I thought was a sweet potatoe pecan pie but was given a sweet potato pie instead. The pecan pie was delectable and not overly sweet! This is a huge plus. The Sweet Potato Pie was creamy but I was put off by the occasional cinnamon randomly bunched up in random bites. It made me realize that this is a pie best paired with coffee. The cinnamon notes were a bit strong as mentioned which made me wonder about the other SP pie I'd go back for the (regular) pecan pie! Oh and they are located in my old neighborhood! Low & behold on NYE when I finally get a slice of pie, it's turns out to NOT be a Classic Pecan Pie, but Pecan Sweet Potato Pie. I do NOT like sweet potato pie, so this ruins everything for me. And then they closed for 2 weeks so I wasn't even able to do anything about it; although from other reviews I read I highly doubt they would've tried to do anything for me anyway. They're known for the pies not the customer service. Thanks for taking my money and not giving me what I paid for I can't judge the pie fairly because I ended up with something I inherently dislike, but I had friends over and some thought it was too sweet while others thought it was decent but nothing special. read more

I came here after seeing it on Bake or Break. You do have to ring the bell to go in but there's a cute little sign now. There was one display case full of cakes and 3 kinds of pie (pecan, sweet potato, and a mix). I got a small pecan pie (only $3.50). It was fresh and tasty with a yummy filling and lots of pecans. I know the family and know that they stand for quality. Stopped by this gem yesterday morning to get a bit of everything to drop off to fans of this location. Disappointed not yet by product but by customer service. Sign on window said "Open Come In." However the door was locked. We knocked and knocked. Finally we went next door and noticed this was an extension, no door but a kitchen with open window. Two bakers were inside. We yelled to them through window, asking "are you opened?" They replied but we could not comprehend what they were saying. One baker looking frustrated, stopped what she was doing and came to the locked door. Opening the door, instead of greeting us, she gestured to a slim doorbell switch on the side. Imitating to "push this." We found this amusing and quite annoying, yet confident. Lol. I was thinking, 'this stuff must be good.' We bought up a little bit of everything to hand out to senior family members. Here is the results: potato pies-5, pecan pies-5, red velvet cake (stale), tea cakes (bland) German Chocolate Cake (not all that). I've been trying to get over to the bake shop to get a large pie cause I always get the small pies at Ralph's on Vermont and Adams Blvd. I wish their contract expanded to the Ralph's in my area.
