This is a small but cozy restaurant with an open kitchen. I love how friendly and inviting they are and am always happy to find a Chinese restaurant with great vegetarian options. THANK YOU FOR THAT! Wowza! 28 Tigers creates amazing food in an understated environment. Great cocktails and very friendly and skilled staff. Be prepared for: 1) Completely casual - Order at the bar & find a seat (inside or in their outdoor seating areas). 2) This is actual Chinese food - Noodles, dumplings, char siu pork, and amazing things like daikon radish cake (a "Must Order," if ever there has been one) - no "Sweet and Sour X." 3) The menu is limited, but amazingly executed, and vegan-friendly - a couple of types of dumplings as appetizers, four noodle dishes, a special Szechuan chicken (which is perfect - and a rarity on the east side of Portland), very clever sides and sauces. 4) A good soundtrack - The obsessive idiosyncrasy that seems to govern 28 Tigers' food and drinks carries over to their choice of tunes (equally enjoyable). 28 Tigers is understated and casual, just like an old-Portland establishment. The people there are friendly and real. The music is well thought out. I walked in knowing nothing, having not read the reviews, not researched the joint, or planned to be there. I was just hungry. They had a special going. A seafood spring roll. I tried it, I absolutely scraped up every ounce of seafood juice off of my napkin like some kind of squid juice junky as my eyes rolled back in utter amazement. I ordered two more. I figured I should try a regular menu item, and got some noodles. Watching the kitchen work their magic from the counter bar, I could tell these people were there to be f-ing awesome, not just throw food on a plate. One of the guys in the kitchen made meaningful small talk as I ate. Offering me a smoky chili oil he felt was great with the noodles, (he was spot on.) and warning against eating the seafood right away, as it hits the table piping hot. The noodles and BBQ pork were so ridiculously good for such a simple dish. Just perfectly executed, really nice ingredients. I had a great glass of white wine with my spring rolls, and a red wine with my noodles. Don't know what the wines were, and don't care. They paired very very well. Can't say this meal was anything less than stellar. This small restaurant has more heart than most of the big popular ones. I'd take a date here, I'd take a friend here, I'd take my mom here. Finally tried 28 Tigers this week and was blown away with the food and all the flavors! We love to go to Holy Ghost so when we found out another restaurant was opening up right next to them, I was stoked! Per usual we ordered WAY too much food for 2 people. But there were so many things on the menu I wanted to try that I had to get a bunch of stuff. Especially knowing that most Chinese food (their food also has roots in Sichuan, Hunan, Cantonese) is good leftover. So we ordered: - Crispy mushroom dumplings - Hong Kong noodles - Sesame noodles - Dan Dan noodles - Pepper bath chicken Everything had explosive flavor and was AMAZING. I enjoyed every dish but some of them stood out more than the others. The Hong Kong noodles were by far my favorite noodle dish we tried. I also loved the Dan Dan because it had a great level of spice. Mushroom dumplings were good, but will definitely try their pot stickers next time. Also loved the pepper bath chicken. Next time I'll for sure order their egg rolls, garlic broccoli, and radish cakes. We took our order to go but the gentleman at the counter was super friendly and helpful when it came to trying to decide what to order! Food also came up fairly quickly. I really enjoyed the food and service from 28 Tigers. I ordered the mushroom wontons but got the pot stickers delivered instead. I pointed that out to the server and he just smiled and said he would bring out the wontons. He was very nice about it and I kept the pot stickers. I then ordered the DaDan noodles. They were really good as were the mushroom wontons with hit sweet mustard. The pot stickers were ok but I probably wouldn't order them but I would definitely order the other two dishes again . read more

We've been so excited to check this place out since our first trip to Holy Ghost in January before 28 Tigers was open yet. It's so good. The green beans with pork were outstanding (fermented black beans! Haven't seen "beans & beans" since Lucky Strike! ), the chicken pepper bath was saucier than most I've had but spectacular flavor (the rice included was much appreciated!). I was not as blown away by the pork dumplings and honestly if I could half-star it I'd probably do that for the dumpling -- not because a place can't have some ups and downs, but if your staples are dumplings and noodles, well... BUT THE NOODLES. oh man, can't wait to come back for the others. The chewy bite of the Dan-Dan noodles and the flavor that wasn't overwhelming peanut and just all spice and umami and amazingness. So delicious! The green beans in black bean sauce and the dan dan noodles were lick the bowl good! Sautéed broccoli and egg rolls were crunchy and flavorful. Staff was kind and knowledgeable. Had large table inside to ourselves so ambiance was perf. Only drawback was too many gin focused cocktails on their menu and they need to add Asian beers (TsingTao, Sapporo, Kirin, Singha, Hite, etc.) So checked out adult bevies at Holy Ghost next door. 28 did have heart warming & digestive aiding bitter jasmine tea, tho. I decided to dine at this Chinese restaurant for dinner when visiting Portland. I splurged myself here. I ordered the Dan Dan noodles for my main course, and I got three appetizers: egg roll, pork potstickers, and garlic chive dumplings. The Dan Dan noodles were thick wheat noodles with ground pork and Szechuan pepper sauce. It was a little spicy, but very flavorful. The egg roll was a cabbage one with the eastern US style wrapper. It was vegetarian, and didn't include pork and/or shrimp. The pork potstickers were generously large, and plentiful with its pork. The wrapper was moderately skin. The garlic chive dumplings contained pork and shrimp. Both of the dumpling orders were delicious. When I ordered water, they provided it to me in a large glass bottle. That was great. The service was fast and accommodating. The place was little small, but it had outdoor seating. The surrounding neighborhood around the restaurant was peaceful and tranquil. I recommend trying this place for Chinese food enthusiasts living and visiting the Portland area. read more

Amazing and delicious food. Placed an order for delivery while I was caring for a friend after surgery and I was really craving bbq pork. Everything was so delicious, especially the tender bbq pork. We also got the chicken dumplings, bao buns, noodles with pork along with the pork - everything fresh and extremely tasty. My friend now has a great spot close to her house she didn't know was there and we enjoyed our dinner (leftovers were still wonderful). Will def go back next time I'm in PDX. read more

The mushroom dumplings are pan-fried to perfection. The filling is very well seasoned and very juicy. The "East-coast Eggrolls" are hefty, crunchy, and well filled. It seems nearly impossible to find good Chinese Food in Portland, maybe because of the PNW's historical discriminatory and Sinophobic sentiments towards the Chinese people. She gets credit yet again today. We headed to 28 Tigers. Love their logo. The place is on SE 28th close to Gladstone. The menu was small-ish and we tried a few dishes. The food was nuanced, flavorful, and fresh cuisine. I'm not super into earthy flavors but tried the Crispy Mushroom Dumplings anyway. In doing so I was met with a well seasoned, crunchy outside shell with warm, soft, succulent thinly sliced mushrooms inside. Wow! Just the right balance of savory, soft, and crunch. I also enjoyed the Chicken Chow Fun -- the pieces of pulled chicken coupled with the wide soft noodles and thin slices of red pepper (red bell pepper) had an umami kind of flavor -- delicious and subtle --the spice mix on this was so pleasant and good. My main dish was Hong Kong Noodles with char siu pork and perfectly cooked greens. The pork reminded me of flavored pork from Chinese American restaurants I went to as a kid -- a positive experience then and now upon consuming this dish. We also shared an egg roll which had the same tasty crunchy shell as the dumplings. The place is simple, the food is thoughtfully prepared, and the service was great. They were also very helpful in offering food choices for my sweetie who needs gluten free options. I highly recommend. read more

Worst customer service ever. I have life-threatening peanut and nut allergies. Ordered a noodle dish that didn't list any nuts/peanuts on the menu. When I got the dish, I asked to confirm and the server told me it didn't have nuts. Luckily, I took only a small bite but quickly realized it did in fact have peanuts. After injecting myself with my Epi-Pen, I went to the counter and was told, "oh yeah, that one has peanuts". When I asked why they hadn't told me before, the server told me, "I didn't know what you ordered". Dude, you carried it out to me w/ the name of the dish written on the outside of the box! And if you don't know, ASK! Don't just say "no". He never apologized. He refunded my dish (after I asked) but not our meal. Needless to say, if you can't eat some ingredients, don't go to 28 Tigers. UPDATE After checking the online menu again today they have changed it to reflect allergens. A good step in the right direction. read more
