29 Palm Inn is located along side a 1000+ year old oaisis in the 29 Palms town. It's a cute little resort, complete with several bungalows, a restaurant, and beautiful scenery. My friends and I had dinner at the 29 Palms In Restaurant. It's a cute littel restaurant with about 15 tables inside, and another 10+ tables outside by the pool complete with outdoor gas heaters). Everyone in the town knows that this restaurant is probably the #1 spot to get good food in 29 Palms. We started our meal with two appetizers: The first was fried calamari. This is not your typical fried calamari. It was thick french fry sized strips of large calamari breaded and served with aspicy dipping sauce. The outsides were super cripsy and the insides were chewy tender calamari. I really enjoyed this dish! Grade: A- Our second appetizer was sauteed mushrooms. Everyone in the town (and on Yelp) find this dish to be the #1 appetizer you should order. It was good. It was a generous portion of button mushrooms served in a well seasoned iron skillet, mixed with white whine, herbs, and garlic. Served with a lemon wedge. Grade: B+ What I loved about the appetizers was that they served home-made french and sourdough bread. The bread was super crispy on the outside, and hot and chewy on the inside. The soup of the day was a vegetarian(ish) kale / bean / tomato sort of minstroni. I have to be honest and say that I was a bit dissapointed in my prime rib. The meat came out looking beautiful, but it was cold. I hesitated sending it back, because the meat would have come back more well done than I wanted it. The baked potatoes were also baked a bit too long, and they were a bit tough outside. It was difficult to eat. Grade: B- What I *loved* about this restaurant was that it was a local hang out place where everyone knew your name. Couple of tips about coming here for a meal: * Ask to sit poolside on Saturday, because they have a pianist and trumpet player who serve up some fun music (jazz and blues). Ambience - exceptional! I ate on the veranda overlooking the pool with twin palm trees in font of the motel rental office. The iced tea was delicious - full-bodied, brewed black tea. It was very flavorful. I ordered the 3 chicken tacos with a side of fruit from the choices of sides offered. The chicken was rubbed with spices and grilled - very tender and juicy. Chopped cabbage, cojio cheese, poco de gallo and sour cream completed the taco on a very good quality corn tortillas. The fruit was all fresh - strawberries, pineapple, honey dew, and cantaloupe - sweet and delightful finish to the meal. The setting is just very relaxing and delightful. 29 Palms is probably the best place to eat near Joshua Tree. Admittedly, the bar is really low, every other meal that we ate while we were there was abysmal. This place was rather popular, and we had to wait about 45 minutes for a table for 2 at 7pm. Since there were lots of people ahead of us, there was no room at the bar to even stand while waiting, so we waited outside in the 32 degree (!!) weather for about 20 minutes for the bar to open up, so that we could wait inside. Finally, after waiting 20 minutes outside in the cold, and 25 minutes at the bar (with the help of some some nice cocktails) we were seated. We ordered the "famous sauteed mushrooms" to start - and they were absolutely delicious -- and it was super tasty to mop up the garlic, wine, and butter sauce with the sourdough bread that accompanied the meal. While waiting at the bar, I noticed that most of the diners were having steak for dinner, so I ordered the USDA Choice rib eye, with mashed potatoes and vegetables. I ordered the steak medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly, and was tender and juicy. Next time I visit Joshua Tree, I would try to eat at the 29 Palms Inn again. read more

Food is good, cocktails are top-notch, but their reservation policy is crazy bordering on rude. You cannot get a table without a reservation - no waitlist or walk-in section, even if you are staying there. No reservation means you try to find a seat at the bar, typically very crowded. Now to make a reservation you need to call after 2pm in the afternoon and talk to a live person. They will NOT accept voicemail requests for reservations, which is NOT stated anywhere. Also they are less than diligent in answering the phone so you have to call repeatedly to get through. If you call, no one answers and you get voice mail, try again. You may have to try many times. In addition, the biggest tourist attraction is JTNP, which has no cell service. If you are in the park during the afternoon, too bad no reservation. When I brought this to their attention, the reply I got was along the lines of "Well, you got a seat at the bar, what's your problem?". I find this unacceptable - as though being courteous to customers is beneath them. read more

I have wanted to stay at 29 Palms Inn since I first discovered their restaurant about 6 years ago. This place did not disappoint! I booked the Old Frame cabin because I knew it was in a charming spot, next to the oasis and I liked that it had a deck too. I wasn't sure if I might bring one of my children or not, so having 2 bedrooms gave me that flexibility. Given that this year of teaching has been very stressful, I opted for the solo weekend retreat! My cabin was rustic as expected with no phone, TV or coffee maker but none of this was an issue. The other bedroom with 2 twin beds did have a small TV. The concern about no coffee in the morning was quickly remedied when I found out about their breakfast service. They set up a few tables outside the main office with grab and go breakfast items, including amazingly good housemade muffins! They also have an old fashion thermos filled with fresh coffee for each cabin, with the cabin name printed on top. The coffee was INCREDIBLE, and I'm a coffee snob, I usually only drink French press coffee, but theirs was delicious and strong. Simply perfect! I enjoyed my breakfast partly in my cabin and partly at a picnic table located next to the oasis. Really a lovely way to spend a morning! My bathroom had a few funny quirks that didn't bother me but might worth noting. Firstly, the whole bathroom slopes down toward the two bedrooms. It's noticeable! This might throw off people who have balance issues, so beware. Being old and vintage, it had an old fashion sink with separate faucets for hot and cold water. I haven't seen that in a while! There was also no electric socket anywhere near the sink. The only plug in the bathroom was behind a cute little cabinet that did have a mirror above it, so I guess you could style your hair at this spot, but it was a bit awkward. I was hiking all weekend, so doing my hair was not a concern. The shower was very comfortable and the bath linens were soft and of nice quality. I loved the homemade touches in the bedroom. The curtains were all handmade with cactus stencils on them, so charming! There was art on the walls from what I'm sure is local artists. My bed was SO comfortable, I slept really well and of course that is important when I am on vacation. In my bedroom closet was an ice chest with a nice note that said the kitchen can fill it with ice for me to keep my picnic lunch cool. The kitchen can make a nice picnic lunch for guests if given notice the day before, but it's not available for pickup until 8:00 am which was too late for my hiking time, but I hope to try it next time! Since the restaurant is currently only serving hotel guests, I was very excited to be able to eat there. Both nights I had a lovely table next to the pool. The first night I enjoyed a carrot Osso bucco which was vegan and very delicious. The second night I enjoyed a pasta dish with mushrooms and chard from their garden which was also delicious! Both dinners came with a side salad with greens, tiny carrots and pomegranate berries, all from their garden!!! It was awesome. I walked through their garden while there which they encourage and was a lovely experience. I've always heard they welcome guests to peruse through their garden but I had trouble finding the entrance gate. It's to the right of the big main gate, beyond the hammock. This garden must be a year round garden or close to it, they still had plenty of things growing! Service at the restaurant was wonderful as usual. Servers always find that balance between being attentive enough but not too attentive...just perfect. I tried a new cocktail this time which was amazing, the prickly cactus. So pretty and so yummy. Since guests at their sister property, the Campbell House, also have dining privileges here during COVID, Saturday was surprisingly busy at the restaurant which was nice to see. In addition to the 6 tables or so they have around the pool, there are also a number of tables on the adjoining patios, including a space with a nice fire pit. I like that if you don't want to walk to dinner (or can't), there are parking spaces right next to the restaurant entrance between the pool and the garden. The two cabins closest to the restaurant are Fault Line and Goldenbush, good places for people with mobility issues. My visit overall to 29 Palms Inn was everything I hoped it would be. I returned home feeling rejuvenated and so happy I got to stay in this very special place. Now my goal is to bring my family here sometime and share the magic with them. We hadn't been here since pre-covid but this visit could have been better. Teriyaki Salmon was over cooked and the sauce tasted like cheap bottled sauce glopped on top. My sea bass was boney and also over cooked. When you order the steak and shrimp for $35.00 you expect a steak not a 2" x 3" sliver of meat and three small shrimp. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!! First timers and we've lived in the area for 2 years. It was such an amazing evening and the price was very fair. Me and my husband both ordered the steak and mashed potatoes and they did not disappoint. We are on an impromptu first visit to Joshua Tree and Palm Springs, and on a friend's advice, wanted to eat at 29 Palms Inn. I discovered from the website that they for the moment you have to be a hotel guest to eat at the restaurant, and we decided to extend our stay in Joshua Tree to spend a night at the Inn. Oh joy! It was a delight in every way, from check in to (up to the last minute) checkout. The pool was warm and clean, with migratory birds overhead, after a long day of hiking the park. Our room was pre-warmed and lit, very clean and cozy and entirely charming in every way. We stayed in Fault Line, with easy parking, a private patio with bistro set and cozy hammock, and all the amenities we needed. A lovely oasis was feet from our front porch. I loved Joshua Tree but am not a huge desert person as a rule; being near a literal ancient oasis eased my spirit. We ate dinner at the restaurant and it was epically delicious from the homemade ww sourdough and housemade kombucha tequila cocktail to the beef medallions in mushroom cream sauce. Nice wine and beer list and very affordable. We were happy to pay the 20% service charge as the service was swift, kind and capable. Continental breakfast was likewise robust and yummy: tea, coffee, high end hot chocolate mix, homemade muffins and banana bread, hard boiled eggs and oatmeal. You could also pre-order lunch (we got a turkey sandwich, yum) to bring into the park. Everyone was kind and easygoing from start to finish. It was a magical place. We can't wait to come back. Showing up somewhere that doesn't take reservations with a hangry toddler sounds like a bad idea, but this time it was a great idea! We were told it would be an hour, shoved some fruit snacks at the kid, ordered drinks by the bar, and plopped down outside to wait. Half an hour later, we were seated, a basket of fresh baked sourdough in front of us, and all was right in the world. The menu is classic, we went with the Ribeye and the Chicken Picatta, both of which were perfectly executed. All the sides and soups were great too, and our daughter ate the kids meal quesadilla quickly so seems like she approved too. After dinner we sat by the pool while our kid danced to the live music for a while before heading home. Only regret is not getting there before dark as we would love tohave explored the grounds a bit, next time for sure! read more

I wanted to get away but have a safe trip so the 29 Palms Inn was the perfect spot. My friend and I booked separate rooms since we don't live together - we stayed in Dandelion and Encelia adobes. The buildings are quaint but clean and well maintained. Each had a private patio and the bedroom had a fireplace. It is a pet friendly property and we each had a dog with us. Check in was contactless - in fact we barely saw anyone during our stay at all. Breakfast was a grab and go option - a thermos with coffee for each adobe or cabin, and offered hard boiled eggs, yogurt, house made granola, muffins, sourdough and what looked like carrot or zucchini bread to bag up and take back to your room. It's a five minute car ride to the Oasis of Mara, a 1/2 mile paved trail that you can take the dogs on. Another 5 minutes to the entry of Joshua Tree National Park. We did not eat at the restaurant because we didn't want to plan what we were doing and the meal had to be ordered ahead of time. But we would hope to eat there next time. We were perfectly happy to sit out on the patio and have some wine as we watched the stars come out. The property itself is lovely, with a pond and a farm. Right at the edge of Joshua Tree National Park, the backside of the Inn looks out at the desert. There were tons of birds around, including a covey of quail. We did see coyotes very close by one night, but had been forewarned to keep watch on our pets due to the wildlife. If you are looking for a relaxing place to stay, I highly recommend this place. read more

Came by with my husband on a Sunday morning for brunch after hearing really positive things. We had a really lovey experience!! We sat outside and the staff set us up with a really nice umbrella be the pool. It felt like we were at a friends house for a pool party--with better food!! They started us with free blueberry muffins and all you can eat tomato bisque which was great! Follow by the monte Christos and the breakfast pizza which we split. My son and I spent a full month traveling around the country visiting national parks, and we stayed in a variety of cool hotels, many fancier than this inn. But when I think back on my favorite stays of the trip, nothing tops this one. There's just something so special about it, and it "spoke" to me in a way most of the other places didn't. It's just so wonderfully authentic, with the most lovely artsy, free-spirited desert vibes. Food and drink was wonderful- refreshing cucumber/mint water awaited us when we checked in, and I had wonderful mojitos and a flatbread pizza with vegetables from the garden. Breakfast was laid out adorably with our own thermos of coffee, muffins, grapes from the garden, and other delights. We stayed in the charming Old Frame 1 & 2, and some day I want to go back and just stay a week there. It was charming inside and we each had our own room, which was fabulous, but the deck was the best part. It's a lovely place to sit with the HUGE palms and pretty pond, but the wildlife watching made it truly magical. At dusk I saw two owls (one landed right on the deck 10 feet from my chair), bats, and all kinds of birds. In the morning we saw a pair of coyotes as well. I would have loved to stay longer--it's truly an oasis in the desert. read more

We went to 29 Palms Inn for the Locals Night (on Tuesdays). We took our one year old with us because we love her that much. For some reason she was really restless. She has been walking since 9 months but yesterday she would not sit in the high chair or on my lap without making a loud fuss. I walked her outside a few times and tried to breastfeed her. For the first time ever, she refused my breast. My partner was inside with a bunch of food and drinks waiting for us. It just didn't make sense. I asked if they would let us eat out on a far patio. There was a small table and double doors that closed it off so my little one couldn't run out. This would give her the space to be a toddler and us the space to eat. They said yes but they aren't set up for service out there. I said, that's fine. This was all we were going to order. They moved us out there. Closed the doors. Unfortunately, a couple snuck behind us and smoked out there. Not a heck of a lot I could say as I think it is a smoking patio. But the patio was big enough we didn't smell smoke. They still came out to refill drinks and bring us the bill. I am so very grateful for the service, courtesy and kindness. And the bill was only $15! We tipped accordingly. Decided to visit the restaurant after local family recommended it. We showed up for lunch not crowded when we arrived, seated quickly, drink order taken and told the daily specials. My wife asked if they could do cherry coke since they had a bar. The waiter said no, to which my wife told the waiter you just add Grenadine to coke, he brought it. The waiter did mistake my son for a woman, but he does have long hair, so no biggie. Party of 5, we ordered 2 adult burger entrees, one with a side of fries, other with cream of mushroom soup. Daughter got a child's cheeseburger with fruit. Other 2 orders were club sandwiches, one with cream of mushroom side and other with cole slaw. Food came after a reasonable wait. First plate served has the wrong soup, which the waiter took back and exchanged. Rest of the food followed soon after. They even brought extra fruit to apologize for the soup mistake. Unfortunately the soup was a HUGE mistake. Cream of mushroom? If it ever saw "cream" that looked like that it would immediately make its way to the trash can. Gloop of mushroom was more like it. Overly thick and clumpy, and had no flavor at all. This from someone who eats cream of mushroom anywhere it served. Even if it's not great but palatable I will still eat it. This I could not bring myself to take a second bite to figure out what got messed up so bad. I asked the waiter if my wife and I could switch it out for fries, we were told we could but would pay extra, we told the waiter no thanks. He came back a minute later saying the fries would be a couple min. To which I asked if we were being charged, he said yes and I repeated we did not want them if we were being charged. When I later asked the girl that brought the bill about that she said he should have let us switch it out without charge, to late then. She also did say the soup was house made. As for the rest of he meal, everything was delicious. Burgers were good sized and very juicy. Ordered mine medium, it was a little over but no complaint since it tasted great. Club sandwiches were huge, wife could not eat the last 1/4 of hers and I finished it off. Mother in law really like her slaw and son loved his fries, I did not sample either of those. Daughters kids meal came with fresh slices of honeydew, cantaloupe and pineapple. Over all I would go back again, but would stay clear of any soup probably. Server was so nice and when I couldn't decided on a soup she let me try a little of both, the potato cream soup is to die for. I got the bourbon cherry salmon with jasmine rice and veggies such a great fresh meal, didn't sit heavy. All in all this place is wonderful. I enjoyed our dinner here (on Christmas Eve). The restaurant had a lot of holiday decor and people were in their colorful sweaters. We got early dinner (actually a late late lunch) at 5pm and were quite hungry. We were served fresh bread and butter and the bread was amazing. Ordered a couple of drinks (prickly pear margarita and desert sunset) and both were great! For dinner I had the portobello Wellington with steamed yams - the pastry was great and so was the cranberry sauce! I would have enjoyed a little more of the mustard sauce inside the pastry. The menu had a few interesting and vegetarian friendly options. We ordered creme brûlée for dessert and it was huge and a bit salty, not the best I have had. However the beds are too small, and we both woke up with a sore lower back. And I do feel it's a bit overpriced. With a short drive from the sister hotel, Campbell House less then four minutes away, we really enjoyed the blast from the past setting and delightful dinner service. My salmon was just right, salads were lovely. Nice soups, different every night. Service was good. We sat down straight away. Highly recommend the Campbell House as well for the rustic desert oasis setting of over night cottages, and lovely breakfast service in their lovely dining room. This was such an incredible find, and hidden gem in 29 palms! My husband and I have been on a week long road trip, and decided to have dinner there on February 21. We were greeted by Toby .
