I had been wanting to go to 3rd Turn for quite some time, and I finally went recently. AND IT'S SO CUTE!!!!!!! It's in an old church (or at least church-looking) building. I enjoyed the beers I tried. They had some seasonal seeming beers, so I'd definitely love to come back and try others in the future. I also tried my friend's white Russian slushie (flavors rotate), and it was soooo tasty, too. They also have some beers from other breweries, so you can try those, too. Most beers were $5. The space was absolutely fantastic. Again, it was so cute and spacious. Even if it was crowded, the high ceilings would make it feel open. There's parking out back, but it looks like there was also some public parking nearby if their lot was full. I'd very happily go back here!! read more

My husband and I have been to several breweries around the country when one or both of us are traveling, but we have only scant experience with the local breweries here in Louisville. We decided to try 3rd Turn because we'd heard good things, it looked comfy inside, and they have cocktails for this non-beer drinker. We took a picnic lunch, husband ordered a flight of 6 beers, and I had a piña colada. The bartender was really friendly. My husband enjoyed every beer. They have a ton of taps for a local brewery--I think 20--plus three different slushes every day, and a full bar. Maybe the best part--super dog friendly! I met two big ol German Shepherds and a wee beagle puppy in just one visit! read more

The atmosphere is really cool and it's right in the middle of the action in j town. They have a great selection of IPAs and Lagers as well as some unique beers I hadn't tried before. This is kind of a hidden gem because you get the feel of an older bar yet it is well maintained. I'm not a huge beer drinker. In fact, I don't really drink beer at all. Which would seem to make a brewery pretty low on my list. But 3rd Turn is that rare brewery that caters to a broader audience. From boozy slushees to mead and cider offerings, 3rd Turn has a little something for everyone. And I do mean everyone. Kids and even dogs are welcome at the brewery. I've seen birthday parties for 20-somethings and 80-somethings. Board gamers and groups of all kinds are welcome in the unique space, a converted church that offers a series of cozy spaces. The one thing the brewery doesn't offer - food - is handled but a rotating series of food trucks out front. Happily then, the menu at your favorite bar is always delicious and always changing. More locations of the brewery are available in other parts of town, but this is the only one I've tried. And it's so good, I'm not sure I'd bother with another. One of our favorite breweries! No-nonsense, casual, hang out spot to play games, and hang out with friends! The old church turned brewery gives the space such a unique vibe and awesome ambiance! I love that they have alcohol slushees too! Their pineapple bourbon slushee is my favorite. Their flight options are also awesome. The J-Town location is bring your own food, but they do sell soft pretzels and cheese. I walked in to Holy Grale... wait a second... Have I had too much to drink? This isn't Holy Grale! If there are people living in J-town and not visiting this place, where are you going? If you're in town on business and you're staying at a nearby hotel, go here now! If you're visiting the Xscape theater close by(as I know many of you prefer now), then go here before or after your movie for drinks! I wanted to visit this place when it first opened but decided to wait a while. I found myself here for the first time a couple of weeks ago. What a surprise! It is like Holy Grale. Since there aren't many bars in the area it comes off to me as a hybrid Grale-neighborhood bar(I'll call it a Gralberhood bar?). My only complaint(a personal one at that) is what part of town it's in. I would love to get intoxicated there, but the proximity to my place limits things. I can't walk from J-town to the Highlands and I'm totally not cabbing/ubering that far. I think they've been around for close to a year. The night I visited they had five different brews. They had plenty of other beer to choose from, but I think they should keep at least ten of their own brews on tap at all times. They certainly have the room for it. If beer isn't your thing, they also have bourbon slushies. I think this bar excels where the Grale lacks. I think the Grale is built for smaller groups(3-6 people). 3rd Turn seems to be better for slightly larger groups(4-10 people). Those tables inside are perfect for playing games with a group. While I like the couches/furniture in the middle of the room, they seem out of place. To keep with the church theme, I almost want them to be church pews. Yes... pews aren't comfortable, but that would encourage people to get up and move around as well. As far as I could tell, the people on the couches were there all evening. They don't serve food and they should keep it that way. Focus on the beer. They do allow you to order delivery or to bring in your food. I love it when places do that. I love this place! As much as I'd love for it to be closer, it's perfect being a tucked away suburban secret. read more

We'd been meaning to check this place out as beer nerds and brewery groupies, but it's not often that we find ourselves hanging out in J-Town. After a night at Breakout Louisville, we figured it was the perfect time to go. What struck me immediately upon arrival is how beautiful the place is. I knew it was an old church, but I was still wildly impressed with how well they had transformed it into a bar. High ceilings, old stained-glass windows and cool but understated tables and bar area. There are also some leather couches in the middle. It's like a more spacious version of Holy Grale, with a more modern seating area (with TVs in the back). There's no food, but you can order in from local places like Loui Loui's pizza. To the beer: There was a very solid guest taps list, but since this was our first time, we had to try 3rd Turn's own beers. I had the imperial red, while the wifey got a hazelnut porter. I have to say that both were a bit blah; nothing wrong with them, per se, but certainly nothing special. I was hoping for more, but maybe there are others that I haven't tried or that they will make in the future that are better. I'm hoping it's not like Great Flood, where the beers continue to underwhelm. But the good news is that there were more than enough guest taps and other options, and the prices were very reasonable. Service was extremely friendly. One gentleman, who may have been one of the owners, asked us on our way out if it was our first time out and said he hoped we enjoyed ourselves. That was a nice touch. We only had one beer each (we had to drive home all the way from J-Town, after all) but would like to come back again sometime because it's such a cool place to hang out. 3rd Turn is for sure a tremendous addition to the J-Town area. read more

I seriously *love* this brewery. When I was in town visiting a couple summers ago, I noticed this was a newer spot on the map and had to try it -- they did not disappoint! The renovation to this old church is beautiful and the beers they make are excellent. I love that you can bring dogs in -- and any food you're in the mood for! They have their own brews, as well as other regional and local brews on tap. They also have a lovely outdoor seating area. I recently visited and tried the Summer Sour, which was awesome. I'm a big fan of sours, and this one did not disappoint. 3rd Turn doesn't make food, but you're free to bring in food or snacks if you like. They also have menus from local eateries so you can order to the brewery if you'd like. I believe they have some prepackaged snacks for sale, but if you're looking for a meal or hearty snack you'll have to bring that with you or order in. I definitely recommend checking this spot out, whether you're a huge beer fan or not. They have lots of options, so most people should be able to find something they like. Best.brewery. Went to 3rd Turn for the first time this weekend, loved it so much that we took some friends the next night. The ambiance and vibe is great - it's in an old church and I loved the openness of the place. We walked to the bar and the owners were extremely helpful with recommendations and letting us try a few. All beers were $5, which is a heck of a lot cheaper than similar places... Cough cough Holy Grale. They even have wine and bourbon slushies for $7. WINE slushies people. They're brewing their own beer, and it'll be ready in about a month - can't wait for that. No food made in house, but there's menus on the tables for delivery from local food joints. Super cool spot in J-Town. It's very chill, so check your drama at the door. Located in the heart of J-Town, very easy to find, with a large parking lot in the back. The building is an old church, with beautiful stained glass windows, exposed brick walls, wood floors. There are lots of seating options, suitable for any party size. Last night I was there with about ten other people, so we opted to sit at two large farm tables. If you're in a smaller group, I'd recommend claiming the comfy leather couches. They have a large variety of craft beers available for $5. But you guys! The bourbon slushie is to die for! Order one! Order two! Order three! You're not the DD, right? They don't have beer of their own, yet. But they will. I'm definitely looking forward to that. They also don't serve food, but you can bring your own or order delivery from somewhere nearby. There are menus to local restaurants on the table. My group ordered from a few different places, including pizza from Loui Loui's. Have you had Loui Loui's? When I first walked into 3rd Turn Brewing, my initial reaction was "Wow, this place is beautiful!" The old church has been renovated into a lovely open space with exposed brick. The room is inviting with high top long tables, shorter tables, and couches. I could hang out in there for awhile and never get tired of absorbing the atmosphere. The person who helped us was extremely friendly and asked if it was our first time. I appreciate that he asked us how we liked it as we were walking out. 3rd Turn doesn't serve food, but you can order from nearby places and have it delivered. Now to the most important part...the beer. I did not like the 3rd Turn Beer I had. It was a brown ale and was not very good. In fact, I thought it was pretty bad. However, there were several really good guest taps available, so it is possible to get a good beer on tap. I'd also like to try more 3rd Turn beers because while I didn't like mine or my husband's, I might like something else they brew. I'm pretty picky (snobby) when it comes to beer. Despite the less than good beer made by 3rd Turn; the atmosphere, friendly staff, and other guest taps made it a four star experience to me. Definitely check this place out!! read more

A group of friends and I hopped over to 3rd Turn after doing Louisville Breakout on a Friday night and were surprised to see how PACKED this place was upon arrival! As others have mentioned, this is reminiscent of Holy Grale, but a little bigger and more open (and in my opinion, more laid back). Standing in a long line seemed like it would take forever, but it moved quick, and by the time I got to the bar to order my flight, I still hadn't decided what I wanted. Prices for flights vary on the types of beers you get, and for some reason, I opted for all the dark beers (my stomach didn't thank me the next morning). I tried their two porters--Chocolate Orange Porter (my favorite of the two) and Double Haze Porter. I also ordered some Founders and Country Boy classics. The only bad part for me was that there was no seating available...but people would abandon their tables for long periods of time, but keep their stuff on it to claim their spots, so that was kind of annoying. My group spent our visit standing in a side room around a table. I'll for sure be back if I'm in the neighborhood, but with all the different options we have, I don't know that I'd make a special trip out here very often. read more

While I had been to the Oldham County location before, I had no idea this other 3rd Turn even existed. When we were invited to a birthday party there last night we were in complete awe. Not only because we had no idea this place existed but also because it is absolutely stunning! There is something very charming about old churches that are turned into breweries and this place reminded me a lot of Taft's Ale House in Cincinnati. Beautiful stained glass windows and delicious brews: What more could you ask for? I drank two tasty Pilsners while chatting with old friends and had a blast. Icing on the cake was the fact that this location is super dog friendly so we also got to pet some adorable furry friends. We will most definitely visit again. read more

This is our place to wind down the week. Our first time there, we spent almost 5 hours just talking and meeting new people. It's a very chill environment and we make new friends each time we go. So atmosphere gets a solid 5 stars. Also, each time we go, there are new beers to be had. It's great if you're wanting to try an array of different beers brewed locally or those hard to find brews you've probably never heard of. One of my favorites is the Meade (made in NH) Ooooh so great! They also have slushy machines that normally carry a wine slushy, bourbon slushy and a signature slushy (I've seem mimosa & Bloody Mary). Oh! And they also have wine and bourbon for you non-beer lovers (apparently they exist?? ) So selection gets a solid 5 stars. But most importantly, we love the owners. They're welcoming and genuinely down-to-earth good people. It's so comfortable right when you walk in. There's two places where I feel at home: my house and 3rd Turn. I really like this place, but I'm never over in that area. It's a big, open space with lots of exposed wood. Pretty big beer selection. I typically go for stouts and porters, and there are plenty of options for me in addition to the ipa-type stuff. Really cool thing is the games. Not unusual for a bar nowadays, but 3rd turn has a whole game room full of board games and card games. Last time I was there, we played jenga and this cool game where you have to finish a very inappropriate cartoon panel. Goes well with beer. read more

I had been here once before a couple years ago I believe, but I recently went back for a first date. This place is really cool with a great rustic feel. It has large open spaces with different types of seating: high top tables, regular tables, and couches. They even have a couple couches in front of a couple tvs on the backside of the building. They have a great beer selection on tap, about 20 or so, and a lot of them are their own brews. I had the Boo Brew Blonde which was really good. I only had one, but kind of regret not having a second. The pricing was reasonable of $4-$6 on average. The atmosphere is casual and laid back without being too loud, which made it a great spot to have a beer and talk. They don't have food here, but that might be the only downside to this place. Which really it isn't a big deal as this could be a great place just to chill or to get pre/post dinner drinks. I'd definitely like to go back with some friends sometime soon. read more

This enchanting once upon a time church turned brewery, yields some of the best craft beer in all of Kentucky. I'm more of a dark beer kind of gal-think stouts and porters (lactose made especially), there is something for everyone here including the non-beer drinking drinker in the group, and there is usually one of those. For them, there are the yummy slushees. So now everyone can be happy in the group. Hooray! Also, if you're bringing a date go to the backside of the church where it's a bit more cozy and intimate.
