Adding to our weekend Boston experience, 75 Chestnut did not disappoint. We came in here on a Saturday night without any reservations and the place was jammed packed with local folks. It was definitely the place we wanted to be at. The drinks were flowing and the food smelled great. We asked the hostess if she had room for two more and said that she didn't, but was very helpful and found us a special spot at the bar... Wow!! This never happens in Miami. She made us feel as if we were family. We were promptly tended to by the bartender and had some great beer (Allgash White Ale).... My fiancé had the crab cakes (we were warned that it was an appetizer size, but she was in the mood for something light) and I had the Pasta Tacino... Everything was excellent. We were not able to partake in dessert because we were full of Boston goodness, but when we come back I will definitely make it a point to stop by again. read more

I went here last week with my girlfriend after looking at their Yelp reviews and hearing about it from some friends/family. The location is great, quite cozy as others have mentioned with a relatively small sitting area and dim lighting. They have cheese and crackers while you wait, and although we didn't get to grab any since we were seated immediately with a reservation, our waiter brought some over when we asked about it. We ended up ordering the chili to split for starters, and I ordered the steak tips with mashed potatoes instead of fries and she ordered the salmon filet with lentils. The chili was good but took a little while to come out- maybe 45 minutes or so since we sat down. I didn't mind the wait as we had a drink and were enjoying the setting, but it still seemed like it took too long. The entrees took about as long to arrive. We finished the chili and after having the dishes cleared, it was a good 45+ minutes till the food arrived (I didn't time it, but it ended up being a 3 hour meal by the time we were finished). The steak tips showed up, ordered medium rare, and were charred and the rarest of them was medium-well, the rest being well done. I've sent back one meal prior to this in my life, and ended up waiting ~15 minutes before the waiter could be flagged down to return this one by which time I'd already picked through the salad, mashed potatoes and the one medium-well steak tip. He apologized and went to the back to the kitchen, returning soon after to pick up the plate to bring to the chef to confirm they were overcooked. Maybe 15 minutes later he came out with a new plate. The steak tips were cooked much better this time, but still weren't great- they were grainy and oddly sweet despite. At the very end of the meal when the waiter dropped off the check, he explained that they steak tips had been cooked properly, but the waiter in charge of dropping them took too long so they sat under a heat lamp. Kind of weird for him to even feel the need to tell us that, but I guess he was trying to absolve himself of the guilt and explain why the kitchen asked for the plate back. It didn't make me feel any better though, knowing that our food (and the salmon) were sitting under heat lamps for that long, especially since the steak tips had a fair amount of char on them which definitely wasn't from the lamps. My girlfriend did like the salmon itself but found the sides to be pretty mushy, probably due to sitting out for however long they were waiting. Maybe we caught them on a bad night, but it definitely wasn't worth the ~$90 check. The atmosphere was great, but the food and service were both severely lacking. read more

I have had several wonderful dinners at this restaurant, and intended to write a review one day...however, I made a reservation for 6 for brunch recently and was sorry. The only reason I don't rate it lower is because of the positive dinners. First, the waiter spilled water on one of my guests, oh well, that can happen, but what was less forgivable was the food...another in out party ordered a simple egg dish, with eggs over medium. They came over well, basically dead. So they went back to the kitchen for another try and came back dead again!! The waiter didn't appear to notice. Another guest's fries arrived cold, which I mentioned to the waiter, but my guest didn't want to send them back (being concerned about what the kitchen does to items in these situations). A good waiter would have brought out another order anyway: ours did not. Another black mark: several of our group ordered o.j., and given this is a fairly nice restaurant we expected fresh squeezed, especially at their price--I can't remember the exact price, but it was expensive enough to expect fresh squeezed--worse yet, it wasn't even good store bought--it was terrible. All in all, a disappointing brunch---this place should stick to dinner. read more

First time in Boston, staying in Beacon Hill and came across this restaurant. Pistachio crusted halibut was out of this world, along with the duck breast. Molten chocolate cake for dessert. Not to mention, we got seated right away even though they were packed! It's a little pricey, but you get your money's worth. Highly recommended! read more

This is a great cozy spot tucked away from Charles St. The atmosphere is pleasant and cheerful, they have an o.k. wine list, some variety but nothing to write home about. Everything on the menu looks good, I've had the salmon, filet, pork chop, burger, and eggs benedict, and was pleased by all. This is a neighborhood place, so the staff is friendly, they want you to come back. The reward program is a nice perk, but I'd still be a regular if they didn't offer it. read more

I thought this was going to be a higher quality, higher end restaurant. What it really was was nice bar food. Burgers, steak tips, fish and chips, chili, etc. The food was ok, not spectacular. I would just say the menu was disappointing. The service was very good. If you're looking for a dining experience that you'd expect from Beacon Hill / Charles St., this place isn't it. I came here with my husband because we'd heard so many good things about the restaurant. We were very disappointed with our experience, however. The Caesar salad, hamburger, and steak tips we ordered were mediocre at best. This is a conveniently located gastropub in the heart of Beacon Hill about a block off the main Charles Strip. I've gone here a few times simply because it's a decent restaurant and in the neighborhood. Their service is exemplary and their free selection of cheese and crackers/bread that they offer at the front is a huge plus especially if you are just here for drinks. The bar area on the right is small, doubt it can accomodate more than 10 people standing room but there's a few assorted tables around it. The main dining area has good ambience, conversation is loud enough to make you feel you're in the middle of something without being overpowering. The food is good, not excellent, not terrible but nothing I would take my friends visiting from out of town to. Their burger was well prepared and very filling and their portions are more than adequate. They have a decent wine selection but on the pricier side....prices start rivaling a cocktail very fast. This is my favorite place to go for great food and great service when in the Beacon Hill area. 75 Chestnut really hits all the stops as it attains to being a great restaurant. The hostess is a gem. She is very attentive and really cares about your experience. Every time I've gone there she has come over and asked how the meal was and had a short conversation with us. I went in there with my girlfriend for her birthday and when we went back about 6 weeks later she remember the last time we were there and really developed a relationship with us. The wait staff is also top notch. Bringing refills often and checking on you frequently. The food is exquisite. There isn't anything I wouldn't recommend on the menu. Another thing that makes 75 Chestnut stand out is their self-serve cheese and cracker spread, when you walk in there are cheeses and crackers out that you can help yourself to. This place is really a home-run. I highly recommend whenever you are in the Beacon Hill area. read more

In a word, decent. Went in on a Sunday, and there seems to be a bit of a boy's club thing happening by the bar, mostly soft-in-the-middle, lawyers of leisure looking fellows. Nothing against it just not my choice atmosphere. Service was decent. Had the 75 Chestnut tower which was an appetizer consisting of calamari (which is on par with the rest of the city, but definitely not exciting), hummus and tabouli with baked pita chips (so-so) and eggplant raviolis which were definitely the low point of the trio. The raviolis were served with roasted red peppers which, in my opinion, should be removed from all menus along with sun-dried tomatoes, so no fault to '75' there. Aside from that they just tasted like first class airline food - not bad, but you could probably do better yourself at home. The dessert, a strawberry shortcake served on lemon scone was really too good and definitely merits another trip to the restaurant. Overall I just think naming an appetizer after the restaurant, to me, identifies it as a "go to" item and this dish was more just "settle for". read more

We are moving out of Beacon Hill and I must say - this is one restaurant I will truly miss. There is not a shortage of good places to eat in the area, but this one is on the top of our list. Great place to hang out and the food is fantastic. A little bit off Charles Street, its a smaller restaurant with a very cozy feel. I wish we'd gone more....but I have a feeling we'll be back, when we are in town visiting! read more

This is clearly a popular neighbohood restaurant, but a fine dining expereince it is not. It is owned by the folks who own Cheers Bar and the odd menu shows the relationship. They toss everything from salads to burgers to main course on one page with no division. Take a look at their own line menu BEFORE you go. Yes, it is charming, but is also small and noisy. When we arrived with a reservation the hostess was perched on a seat by the door and didn't even get up or show us to the table. She just pointed and siad "There is your table, have a nice dinner." We were really disappointed in the food. Paying $20 to $35 an entree we expected more. The salmon was overcooked and definitely tasted frozen. The prime rib was fatty and thin. There were four of us and not one felt the food was better than average. Boston has many fine restaurants, but in our view this is not one of them. read more

Hey the last I checked this is New England and I felt like I was eating at Red Lobster! They charged $30.00 for the plate. Just off the beaten path in Beacon Hill, 75 Chestnut is a cozy, special spot with an inviting bar and dining room. Comfort food (think steak tips, roast chicken) appropriate for each season. The cheese and crackers at the bar are the perfect accompaniment for meeting a couple of friends after work. Used to go here nearly weekly when I lived in Boston for a drink with friends - it hits the spot if you want a good place without pretension. read more

Went to 75 Chestnut the other night, while the food was good, I noticed at the end of the meal that one of the side dishes that should have been served with my entree never came (I didn't notice until I saw the table next to us get the same dish). I pointed this out to our waitress and she offered a half-hearted explanation that the kitchen screws up sometimes and seemed as if she couldn't care less. read more

We just returned from 75 Chestnut where we we had dinner.. I am so disappointed.!! We had been there for brunch a few months ago and it was wonderful. It is such a cute place and we thought we would check it out for dinner .. I ordered the steak tip dinner for $16 and my friend ordered the pasta linguini with chicken and vegetables for $17. The steak tips came with 5 very small dry pieces of steak.. a handful of tasteless spring mix salad and this sad pile of fries. I requested some horseradish after the first bite as it was really not good and needed something. The fries were dry and unappealing... Our server was nice and attentive .. I realize its not his fault that the kitchen is putting out terrible food.. They were offering free cheese and crackers on a table in the bar . I just think they should pay attention to the caliber of food coming out of the kitchen .Tues nights are "cookie night " where they bring you a cookie and then ask you to rate it .. The double chocolate cookie was quite good... My friends pasta was very good and had a lot of flavor .. Maybe the kitchen was having an off night as far as the steak tips go .. I would go back for brunch would not at all recommend ordering the steak tips ... It was a waste of money. read more

This is one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) restaurants in Boston. So far, everything I've had is good - from the steak to the pasta to the chili. Order the spicy and dirty martini. It's AMAZING and we've tried to recreate it at home, but can't get it just right. Also fun is the bloody mary bar and delicious brunch on the weekends. The atmosphere is not too small, but like a neighborhood bistro, and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. I love it! read more

We live in the neighborhood and eat here a couple times a month. 75 has an atmosphere that's somewhere between pub and restaurant; relaxed and neither grubby nor stuffy. The menu is fairly diverse, changes slowly over time, but is supplemented with seasonal specials. I think I've tried most items, but my old reliables are the Bibb Salad and the Mussels (with little bits of chorizo in the sauce, yum). The pumpkin ravioli I had a couple nights ago was delicious. read more

The service was good, the food was poor, and the room was dark, but pleasant. The host and waiter were both very nice. I ordered a dish that came with strawberries, but the strawberries seemed to be previously frozen, and other food tasted like what one might find prepackaged in a grocery store. The food was very good, the service by most of the staff was delightful, but this place gets 3 stars solely based on the attitude of our waitress. My husband and I sat down for dinner and she came by and very shortly asked, "drinks?", and then, "are you eating?" Excuse me? I'm seated, at a table in a restaurant, at dinnertime. Of course I'm eating. What kind of question is that? Suffice it to say this little twit had NO "bedside manner". Halfway through our dinner I watched her back into some poor girl and make her spill her drink all over herself, and she didn't even apologize! We spent close to three hours there (drinks, appetizer, entrees, and dessert) and she did not thank us a single time- or even seem mildly appreciative. It actually seemed as if she didn't care if we stayed or went! Aside from the terrible waitress, the rest of the staff was wonderful and very welcoming, and the food was very good. ESPECIALLY the scallops!!! They were the best I've ever had. And the sorbet dessert is also fantastic. All in all, great place, very good food, and good service, as long as you stay away from this particular waitress! read more

Maybe a bit critical because this was Saturday night before Christmas and all the good restaurants in the area were booked up. I had to take a 5 PM reservation, but it was OK because I had my 8 yr. old granddaughter with us. We were seated promptly despite this being a pretty small place. At that time, still a pretty brisk bar business that continued throughout. Made it quite noisy because the dining room is just on the other side of the bar area. Lots of menu choices and a good mix in types of food. I had a shrimp and scallop dish inside filo. It was delicious, but a bit on the skimpy side. Two other diners had Nantucket Seafood Stew which they raved about. When I made the reservation I was told I needed to finish by 6:30, which we did. But there was a group waiting next to us and the waiter brought the check when some were still finishing dessert. Not cool. I'd like to go back during the week when it is not as crowded or noisy. read more

My friend and I eat at 75 Chestnut at least three times a month and its by far our favorite restaurant in Boston. We absolutely love the food and get the same dishes every time. I get the wedge salad, pork chop, and apple strudel and Lauren's famous blue cheese stuffed olives and grey goose martini straight up shaken... not stirred! Besides the food being so good and consistent the real reason we love to go is the fabulous hostess, Betsey, and two bartenders Lauren and Chris. Every time we walk into 75 Chestnut we are immediately greeted with a smile and a warm welcome back from Betsey (who knows almost everyones name who walks thru the door) and we are shown our seats at the bar at which time Lauren and Chris say " Blue Cheese Martini" tonight? This place is slammed almost every night of the week and for the hostess and bartenders to remember our names, conversations, and preferences is quite remarkable! Lauren, Chris and Betsey always take the time to engage with us and make us feel like we are part of the 75 Chestnut family! We highly recommend 75 Chestnut! read more
