I'll start by saying for a chain of sorts this place is solid. As the most expensive steak in St. Louis you better have your act together as we are beef raised Midwesterners. Fortunately, 801 offers classy fair with a modern ambiance. Surrounded by Picasso prints and classy green jacketed wait staff, you feel as though your dining in elegance, but not in a stuffy low ceiling steakhouse of old. I frequent this spot for large work events and utilize the 6, 12, and up to 25 person rooms fairly often. The staff is always knowledgeable and lights out. I feel attended to, informed, but not hounded as many fine dining places with promote. The rooms block out sounds accommodating presentations and the screens are large enough to prevent a need to squint. The meat cart presentation is flat out impressive. As a very carnivorous individual, I enjoy the celebration of the quality. The bone in filet and bone in strip is my favorite. Charred medium rare (because they know how to do it). The shareable sides are generally great (starts slow clap for mac & cheese) but I have to say the "signature hash browns" are overrated. The kitchen has never missed on an entree, the sides are large enough to split for four (ask for half sides), and the in-house pastry chef is outstanding. Took my daughter out for a nice dinner last night. I hadn't been here in years. Ordered the 8oz filet cooked medium. Best steak in possibly my entire life. I usually choose a bone-in ribeye for the flavor, but my daughter will only eat filet. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. When I asked to purchase whatever deliciousness they prepared my steak with, I was informed it was only seasoned with salt & pepper....say what? we also had the Oscar style topping with bernaise, to which my daughter stated, "yours is better." Lol. The spinach and scalloped potatoes were good but had a large amount of topping and the steak was so good, we hardly touched the sides. They also serve Grand Marnier soufflé for dessert. it's quite amazing how much better capital grille is at nearly half the cost. the food is very good but you're going to pay huge $$$$$. you're talking about 400$ to dine here for two.. lots of escorts in extremely tight skirts with older men...this place has a shopping mall feel. My spouse and I call these restaurants "hooker meetups..." always fun to watch 20 year old gals meet 60 year old guys and shake hands (!) before a meal (They've obviously not met until dining at 801). Saw a guy in an aerosmith t shirt and jeans dining. Just a strange gamut of tourists. restroom reeked of smoke and marijuana also. The food is very good. Drinks are amazing. If you have a lot of expendable money this is your place. I'm more into capital grille because it has a much much much much nicer atmosphere at half the cost. First off, as expected, the service was fantastic. As a table of 4, we spent a lengthy dinner for my birthday here. Dirty martinis were fantastic. Our chosen wines were available and paired well. Apps: Lobster corn dog - a bit misleading, as this is a shrimp/lobster combo blended (not chunks) and coated in corn dog batter. They are about 2 small bites each. Though fine, not very exciting, and very overpowered in any shellfish flavor by the batter. Crab Cakes - fabulous. Chunks of sweet crab and not too much binding. Highly recommend. Salads: Wedges had generous amount of blue cheese and large cubes of bacon. Mine was dressed a little heavy, but was easy to get off before slicing into the lettuce. Caesar salad nicely done with traditional anchovy on top. All were enjoyed. Steak: Steak medallions w/ lobster claw - lobster and sauce was nice. Very disappointed in my steak - it was far too 'char broiled' on the top and bottom and took away from the flavor of the steak itself. I would not try again. Hubs and friend had the pork chop, butterflied at the recommendation of service. I found it to be cooked well and juicy, but he was expecting more flavor given a rub was added and the description. It's Sunday, they've got their prix fixe menu and 801 is on Ian Froeb's STL 100 List - so let's go give it a try. As I approached the restaurant, my parking angel that hangs from my rearview mirror got me prince parking on the street. Winning! I immediately know that it is going to be a winning night. I get inside the restaurant and tell the hostess, I'll just go sit at the bar. I circled the bar once, like a dog getting ready to lay down. I wanted to make sure I had a good space and no one else was on top of me and that I wasn't invading theirs as well. I studied the menu before my arrival, so I already knew what i wanted. I started out with a Manhattan (Happy Hour $8). I asked the bartender not to laugh, then I asked him if I could have an order of Brussels Sprouts instead of a typical appetizer. He said yes, but recommended that I get a half order since the regular size is meant to be shared when dining. It was a perfect serving and I enjoyed how they roasted them. I'm not a fan of toasted Walnuts, but when it was combined with Garlic, Orange Zest and Parsley - they made this dish really pop. My second cocktail of the evening was an Old Fashioned (Not Happy Hour $18) Ouch, it was good, but Don Draper wouldn't even pay that much for one. With the prix fixe menu, I got a salad, entree and dessert. For my salad, I chose the Caesar, my entree was a 6 oz Filet and dessert was Creme Brûlée. The Caesar is my go to salad, especially when it has house baked croutons and white anchovy. My Fielt Mignon De Burgo was served with Boursin Mashed Potatoes and Grilled Asparagus. Why had I not been here before? Dress casual, no coat and tie required for men. Valet parking...pay through your phone but not sure how since I was the non paying passenger. Or you can park in the garage across the street. Very little street parking on a Friday night unless you're okay with walking three plus blocks. Clean bathrooms. Wish the waste basket was near the door so I didn't have to hold door open with my foot and stretch to throw away my trash after washing hands. Reservations for date night...Friday at 7. Restaurant seemed pretty full. Several sitting at the bar. Multiple bartenders. Good people watching. Friendly, knowledgeable waiter willing to share his favorite choices when asked. Drinks kept full. Great bar selections. Only prime meats served here. There are non meat options but if you're a carnivore, this is your place. Steak tartare was delicious. Steaks cooked to perfection. Sides are a la cart and two are enough to share, three if you're starving but still want leftovers...generous portions. Dessert was just okay which was disappointing but...now I'll have to go back, suffer through an entire amazing meal just to see if another dessert choice is worth it. Parking - out front or in the parking garage although I felt the parking garage attendant was a bit too invested in the job - I accidentally missed the sign that said "Stop for attendant" and parked about 8 or 9 spots down. When I got out of the car, she said I didn't stop and needed to check in. She waited until I walked all the way over to her to tell me I needed to bring the car over, too. I went back to the car and started backing out to drive the car the 50 feet over to her. She indicated I was pointed the wrong way and would need to turn around and drive around, and so I did. I finally arrived at the guard station, she wrote down my plate number, handed me something to put in the dash, and then I drove the 50 feet and parked in the same spot I was in originally. Ambience - just a little too dark, couldn't see the menu w/o light from my cell phone, couldn't see entrees of my co-diners across the table well. Appetizers - Ordered down-home shrimp, 4 shrimp per order, very large shrimp, incredibly good sauce, save some bread for this sauce, didn't really need mashed potatoes in it. Sides - They thought 4 sides, which are served family style with large portions, would be enough for our group of 8. Ordered asparagus (solid), lobster mac (wouldn't order again, just OK), scalloped potatoes (this was the star and a must-order), creamed corn (my 2nd favorite item, good flavor). Steaks - Because of the (what is it?) 800 degree oven they finish the steaks in, the steaks get a "nice charred crust on the outside." I am not a fan of the bitter taste of char on my steaks and asked if they could do "light char," and I would say they did a decent job. It was $4 more to add a sauce to the steak, and I tried au poivre with cognac cream sauce (peppercorn), which was excellent, but truly, there needed to be more of it by far. Steaks come a la carte, no automatic sides served with it. I could only put a little bit of one side at a time on my plate to keep my sides from soaking up what little peppercorn sauce I had for the steak. Dessert - The chocolate souffle takes ~25 minutes to bake and was good, but I'm surprised they didn't mention this at the start of the meal, so we could avoid the wait. No creme brulee on the menu, but they still made us some anyway since it was for the birthday girl - how nice is that! Cheesecake was rich and creamy, but I did not prefer the taste of the cherries (I think they were cherries) in sauce they provided with it. Located near the Ritz Carlton in an expensive part of town is 801 Chophouse. This is not for the feint of heart you will spend money and lots of it. For starters we ordered the deluxe shellfish platter. $85. This came with whole lobster, king crab legs, jumbo shrimp, and oysters. It was more than enough for 4 people. It so much that everyone having finished amended what they were going to order and the sides for the main course. I ordered the NY strip steak bone in with maytag blue cheese on top. I ordered it cooked medium and it was cooked to perfection. All the beef is rated as prime which is the highest grade available. I was somewhat underwhelmed with the steak. The flavor was not quite what I would expect for prime and the blue cheese overwhelmed the steak, my bad. I also ordered a side of grilled Brussels sprouts. This was a simple dish made complicated. It did not need the walnuts and the over the top garlic. I would have preferred the sprouts a little simpler. Mrs. K. ordered the petit filet and a massive baked potato. I must report her steak was cooked per her preference and the potato was huge. We brought home the potato untouched and a couple of bites out of the filet. We had our business meeting here instead of our usual. They had a perfect size room available. We started with some appetizers and I must make a recommendation. Although the oysters were great the calamari is out of this world. Like nothing I have ever had. The wait staff I also have got to give credit too. Incredibly knowledge about the different cuts. But let's talk about the "Prime" prime rib. OMG! Number one, I don't know how anyone could finish the whole things. It's a massive piece of meat. And finished to perfection. I ordered a dry aged Delmonico steak, which is about $110. I ordered my steak medium rare which I expect bloody and pink on the inside. I kid you not this steak came out almost completely raw, I touched the center and it was actually cold. Out of the fridge cold, the internal temp had to be about 50 degrees. I get the waiter show him he agrees brings it back, they had just recooked the cut pieces. And they were still completely raw. When I'm spending $280 on a meal I expect my steak to be cooked. Amazing experience last night dining here. We valeted for $4 which I would suggest, unless you want to try and find a spot. The restaurant is stunning. The atmosphere is that of an old school, high end steakhouse where the waiters wear aprons, tend to your every need, where the table is cleaned at all times and your napkin is constantly refolded for you when you get up from the table. A must is the 801 chop salad, substitute the herb vinaigrette for the fried garlic buttermilk, the creamed corn, Brussels sprouts, lyonnaise potato and splurge for the lobster mac-n-cheese. We ordered a $120 steak medium rare and it came out burned on the outside and raw on the inside. We were told that was MR and that the burn was "charbroiled" and made to feel as if this was a normal way to serve such a fine cut. The Caesar salad had stale croutons and exactly 1 anchovy. Amazing ambience and excellent service. Our server was super attentive and went above and beyond the whole night. The food was great. I had a sizable ribeye with foie gras that was cooked perfectly with incredible flavor. All of our sides, which are served family-style, were excellent too. Huge wine selection. Oysters tasted very fresh and delicious and the mignonette they were served with was to die for. It was my birthday so the staff signed a menu for me and brought out a cheese cake that said "Happy birthday Olivia" on it which was so sweet. Don't sit by the bar!! Our table is loud and table conversation is difficult. The food is amazing but the atmosphere (I can't reach my napkin because people are that close to my table) ISN'T. I've been wanting to go to 801 Chophouse for years, but have never made the trip. It exceeded my expectations! We came for restaurant week and were very pleasantly surprised to find that there was a 12-oz. strip steak on the restaurant menu that was not shown online! I like a more marbles piece of meat, so this was my choice. I started with the wedge salad plus bacon and blue cheese at the recommendation of the server and it was very good, especially given that wedge salads are not my fave (I'm not a fan of iceberg lettuce). Next up was the 12 oz. strip steak with green beans and garlic mashed potatoes and everything tasted better than I expected! The steak was perfectly cooked and the green beans and mashed potatoes were very flavorful! We ended the meal with creme brûlée and it was delicious! The custard has a strong vanilla flavor, which I really liked! I also had a Tito's dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives and it was perfect! The bread and bitter had a great tang and bite as well. The bar was hopping on a Wednesday night and I'd imagine it's a great place to come for a drink after work! read more

Even the half order of brussel sprouts and mash-potatoes is plenty to split 7) Surprisingly loved the Lobster Corn Dogs! 8) Superior Service Cons: 1) It is slightly pricey - so I don't know about an everyday hang-out spot. 2) The fish dishes should be let go of and just walk over to their sister restaurant at 801 Fish. 3) Scalloped wrapped in Bacon only came in an Odd number of 3. 4) The steak is aged perfectly, but it really isn't superior than other steakhouses in the area. I always try to order 2-3 appetizers and split the entree with 2 sides because the portions are so large here. But with drinks - this should still run you around $200 for 2 as an expectation. So if just want more of an everyday occasion, come on Sunday to try this place out.
