For a place that charges as much as this one does for steaks, you would think they'd be cooked correctly. I went here with my brother and mother for dinner and all 3 of us ordered our steaks medium rare. All 3 were absolutely burnt beyond recognition. The center looked fine but when there is a thick, hard, and super bitter layer of char and destroyed meat completely covering your steak, the whole thing tastes like you're eating charcoal. An absolutely well done outside with an almost raw center usually comes from trying to cook a steak too fast. I don't understand how such a nice looking STEAK restaurant can serve a steak that's been utterly wrecked and burnt to a crisp as "medium rare" with this regularity. This place is amazing!! The bar area is huge and the seating is spacious, with tables and giant booths. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. We tried it out for our 15 year anniversary and were not disappointed. We ordered escargot and carpaccio for apps, both came with toast points - delish!! For our main courses, I had the Chilean Sea-bass which came with an array of veggies. It was seared perfectly and tasted amazing. My husband got the Ribeye and side of scalloped potatoes, again perfect!! And finally because it was our anniversary, they brought us out a menu with Happy Anniversary on top and offered us a dessert, on the House!! We opted for the Grand Marnier Soufflé, which was accompanied by chocolate sauce, berry sauce and creme anglaise. Heavenly!! I would definitely recommend for a date night or even dinner with friends. There's no arguing the food is fabulous. However, on the last visit, we had a Groupon and felt like we were trash for using it. We had a party of four for my husband's 60th birthday a year or so before and had wonderful service and food and the bill was larger than my mortgage payment due to the wine and alcohol we had. When we returned a few visits later with the Groupon, we were stuck in a corner, had a waitress who acted like we were impinging on her time, and when there was a little problem with our order, had the manager return with the correct item and practically sling at our table as he walked by. We weren't even asked if we wanted dessert. We will never return after this experience and I am aghast they even still offer the Groupons; I keep getting emails about this offering and I wouldn't go back if it was free. 25th Anniversary dinner was fantastic. They welcomed us with smiles, took our coats and service was A+. Sat at the beautiful bar for one cocktail and were seated on schedule as we made reservations. I had the filet medallions and Jim had the filet and we both agree this is the best we have ever had. They gave us a choice of free dessert for our celebration. We will go back for sure! Oh yeah and shout out to Kelsey for amazing service. Loved the unique sides that the chefs signature was very apparent. Chose this restaurant to celebrate our daughter's 21st birthdya as we have dined here before and have always been impressed. Unfortunately, this visit was utterly disappointing. The service and attention to detail were atrocious. We were told we could bring in our own custom made birthday cake, complete with candles and our daughter's name on it. At the end of our meal, we were informed that they had given our cake to another party. Later we learned that the staff made the decision to give our cake to a larger party with a Cinncinnati Reds baseball player who wanted a birthday cake. My wife and I celebrated our 10th Anniversary at 801 Chophouse, I have never had a steak melt in my mouth like the one I had here. My wife who is a major foodie, agrees. We recently moved here from California, and have eaten great steaks there, but this meal and the quality of the aged beef was something I had never experienced! The service was top notch, with the waiter recommending Scotch that I had never had before, and that I can't wait to try again. Also, the wine pairings fit each course like a glove! We had made our reservations early and let them know it was our anniversary, so they brought out custom menus with our names printed on them with a big Happy Anniversary. We couldn't believe our eyes! The ambiance is great, and we met the Chef named Donald, I told him he had cooked probably the best meal of my life, other than a couple of my wife's meals she makes me that she knows are my favorite. Hands down, this is one of the best steak restaurants in the St. Louis area. It's "fine dining" and comes at a price but our dinner was worth it. Service was excellent. Very attentive, even during peak dinner hours. Portions are large and totally shareable. Sides are extra and served family style but can be ordered in half sizes. Out last experience at 801 was at Fish across the street. While I felt like that meal was over hyped and over priced, 801 Chophouse did not disappoint. I don't care how many people are at the table, I don't believe quality should be compromised. 801 chophouse did not disappoint. Our waiter presented our meat options. His presentation made me hungrier and then he went on to say that their desserts were baked in house daily and if we wanted a soufflé we would have to order it twenty minutes in advance because it comes straight out of the oven.... Went for New Years Eve and was terrific. We usually come once every couple months. The Kansas City strip III terrific with the Au Poivre sauce. They allow you to do half orders of sides which is great. My girlfriend always gets the filet and loves it. At times the service can be spotty at best and I would have left lesser reviews. At times the service can even be BAD but we do keep coming back and prefer it over the comparable steak houses that are local. We used to DDT's Ruth's Chris often but their service can be equally as bad and the food is more inconsistent. Tip for those wanting to do fine dining on a budget.....Chophouse does run Groupons which III an excellent way to give it a shot if you're not wanting to spend typical upscale fair. read more

Great steak is only part of the experience at a place like 801. To me you have to have the whole package to get a good review. Especially when the prices and reputation are what they are. Most unfortunately they missed the mark on nearly every important metric. Walking in I wasn't greeted or at least greeted in a memorable way. I grabbed a seat at the bar and waited and waited while three to four bartenders were huddled up a few feet from me. Once they dispersed none of them seemed to think I was important enough to service. I was on the verge of implosion with hunger and it took what seemed like eons to get anyone's attention. Once I did get service it was of ordinary quality. I got a nice glass of cabernet and a menu. It was another long wait till I was asked if I wanted to order food. Once I placed my order it was another eternity till they brought out bread. I mentioned that I was really hungry so I thought maybe they'd bring out a bread basket quickly. I was wrong. The steak arrived and while it was cooked to my med-rare specification only one side of it was any good. Tiny bits of char and fat gave it some flavor, but beyond that tasted like steak cooked in an oven. No smoke, no flavor, just meat at a particular temperature. Then it went from ok to bad when the meat got tough and gristly. The asparagus was big and cooked well, but also lacking flavor, maybe its not the right time of season for it (it is btw). The best part of the meal was the potato pancake. Oh and the wine I ordered really hit the spot. "Meh, I've experienced better" is exactly what I was left with and as a result 2 stars. read more

Very solid addition to the Clayton restaurant scene! Fabulous melt in your mouth steaks and the best creamed spinach I've had to date. Love that the sides are served family style but can be brought in half portions to allow you to try more of them.. and I highly recommend trying several. Highly recommend the down home shrimp, served with four super jumbo shrimp. A great alternative to (and in the same price range as) Morton's and Ruth's Chris. Definitely try the lobster corn chowder but be prepared to share. There's a smidge of spice in the after taste but even I (level 0 spice girl) couldn't stop eating it. Absolutely fantastic. Service was on their A game, with the courses coming out timed perfectly and the water glasses never less than half full. Beautiful "Happy Birthday" message written in chocolate on our dessert souffle was much appreciated. We probably won't get the souffle again, the main "cake" part was bland and too many choices of toppings for the amount of souffle given. Plenty of other options to try for next time - and there will be a next time!! The only minor flaw to this place is the noise level. The main room could really use some sound dampening panels. Steak cooked well, it could've been a little bit more rare but still tasted wonderful. Their tomato bisque had good flavor, Caesar salad was pretty basic. Bread was a perfect sourdough: soft and dense on the inside and flaky and crisp on the outside. The blueberry cheesecake was phenomenal! Will definitely go back! Have visited 801 Fish several times with an excellent experience all around. Because of this, we thought we would try 801 Chophouse. We were greeted upon entry very quickly and sat shortly after. It did take the waiter a short bit to surface at our table initially and I thought this was odd as they were not very busy at the time we arrived. Nonetheless, the server arrived and he was "okay". We felt he was a little condescending in how he spoke to us but we didn't let that get to us too bad. The food was good. Nothing over the top. I did expect the food to have more of a Wow Factor, but it lacked that for sure. In the end, good experience and may be back. But can't say it will be my first choice for a great steak and ambience. I've been here a couple of times and I have to say I wasn't that impressed. My first visit here was during Clayton Restaurant week where we had the prix fixe menu, it was good, and I won't judge it too hard based on this since I know those menus are slightly different than normal. I came here again last night and still wasn't overly impressed. They have a great selection of steaks, seasonings, sides, and appetizers, but I didn't think it was worth the the money honestly. I was waiting to have that mouthwatering amazing steak sensation while eating my steak, but it just wasn't anything out of the ordinary. The service was ok, our waiter was attentive but not overly friendly. He seemed in a rush always, not sure if they were short staffed or something. First time at this restaurant, so let's start at the beginning. I called ahead with a couple of questions and and just happen to mention we were going to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. When we sit down "Happy 24th Anniversary" was printed on the top of the menu. Wow! The atmosphere was second to none! The decor is classic, elegant, and contemporary at the same time. It definitely feels like a fine dinning steakhouse. Our table was perfectly set and they even added hearts in honor of our anniversary. Our sever did an outstanding job from the presentation of meat selections to even keeping our ice tea and water filled. He was incredibly personable, which I find refreshing. My wife has some food allergies and he made sure that her order was something she could eat. Now for the food. I ordered the Tuscan Ribeye, which was 16 ounces of pure deliciousness. My side was the lobster mac and cheese and it was incredible to say the least. My wife ordered the 28 ounce prime rib. Let's just say she will have plenty to eat tomorrow and possible the next day. In her words, the prime rib "melts in your mouth!" Her side was the grilled asparagus, which was prepared in olive oil. I'm not a fan of this vegetable and I thought it was very good. She loved it. We always try to pick a good steakhouse for anniversary as we both love steak. Since living in the St Louis area we have been to some nice restaurants, however, this is the best place we have dined in our 24 years of marriage. The atmosphere is sophisticated but I love that i can put on a nice polo and jeans and still go. I had a chance to check out 801 Chophouse tonight and I was extremely impressed with the food and service. I had the lobster corn chowder, the 12oz medium-rare NY strip with the bone marrow butter bath, and a side of brussels sprouts. The chowder soup was a delight--tasty and rich. The steak was prepared exactly as ordered, medium rare, crusted on the outside, and extremely flavorful--one of the best I've had (definitely one of four of my most memorable steakhouse experiences). I love brussels sprouts and thought that these were very good, but not great. My preference would have been to have them fried. I also want to add that my dining experience at 801 Chophouse was 2nd to none--in fact, it was one of the best I've had at a steakhouse, or any restaurant for that matter. The server I had was visiting from a sister steakhouse in Kansas City who was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the various cuts of beef. He almost sold me into getting the rare (as in scarce) bone-in fillet, but I'm more of a rib eye / NY cut kind of guy. Aside from schooling me on their meat steak selection, we also chatted about his time living in the bay area and my experiences traveling and dining in the greater St. Louis area. Although the lack of this personable service wouldn't necessarily have diminished my 5 star rating of the food, it definitely added to my experience and reinforced my 5 star rating, and is certainly worth calling out in my review. read more

Let me tell you... these cheesy hash browns could feed a family of 4! And apparently, they gave me the "smaller" one. It was so good and yet very intimidating. The bartender also requested an Old Fashion. It was also amazing! Im a "cocktail snob" and so it was one of the best. So I visited 801 at the end of Clayton Restaurant Week with a small group of friends. The restaurant offered the special restaurant week menu or you could order from the standard menu. There were a few upgrade options on the special menu, which always makes for a more enjoyable meal. The meal started with a Caesar salad, which was topped with a white anchovy. The salad was tasty but it was on the small side. The bread and butter was not to my liking. A beautiful sourdough loaf served with frozen butter that requires a steak knife to cut into and spread is not my idea of what a 5 star restaurant should serve. Anywho! I got the 8oz filet, cooked medium with just the right amount of red in the center. My steak was well flavored, very tender and juicy. I can't wait to come back and try their ribeye. The potatoes were decent and the asparagus was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Some friends ordered the lobster mac and cheese which I sampled, it was really good too. Finished the meal with creme brûlée. You can't go wrong with such a simple yet elegant dessert. Second time around, decided to come to try out the regular menu, not the Sunday prifix menu. Ordered the grilled oyster, prime rib single cut and grilled plus rubbed with Cajun powder, New York strip, and some sides. Overall impressed with the quality of the steak, especially the prime rib. The single cut was less than expected, as I was expecting a queen cut. Regular ribeyes are not even close to compare, and yet the Cajun rub did eventually turn out to be too salty. My wife liked the New York strip but I thought it was a bit overdone for a medium rare. Oyster not worth the price, and although the waiter service was good, he didn't exactly give too much effort into trying to get us in the mood either. Was super excited to go here for my birthday - the experience was nice, but not exactly what I expected. I really love oysters, so asked the waiter about them (how fresh, the differences, etc.) and it was kind of like well, yea, they are fresh, we have 801 Fish across the street, and here are some general differences. The oysters I chose arrived at the table and they were SUPER small. :(. Of the six I ordered, only one was what I would consider standard. Additionally, I did not get a small seafood fork or a lemon - had to ask for both. The steaks and sides we ordered for dinner were really good, and dessert was good as well. After we finished dessert, we waited for the check, and finally had to ask for it - not sure what that was all about. All in all, dinner was fine, and we will most likely go back, but really hope that we have better service he next time around, and are not seated in the bar!! read more
