I traveled to Omaha on business and used the three earlier reviews to "take a chance" They were 100% correct. Paxton is not a place to go for an Outback Steak. This is fine dining. My waiter accomodated half orders and offered excellent suggestions. I finished with an amazing desert of sliced bananas over a cream custard in a pastry shell. The first time I was there I remember being much more impressed than this last time. While the cut of meat was great, I think it might have been a bit overcooked. A friend of mine who ate there recently said I should have sent it back, but that's not really my style. Apparently they would rather you do that then get a piece of overcooked meat, or so the waiter told him. I also though the sides were lackluster for the price. They were pretty good, but for $10 garlic mashed potatoes, they should have been mind blowing. Same goes for the brussels sprouts. Despite living in Omaha for a few years now, this is my first steakhouse. I liked the decoration which consisted of a lot of cow/bull photos and art, as well as a large golden bull statue in the middle of the dining area. The service was very good with excellent timing and a great knowledge of the menu. The waiter was a little more casual than I would expect for such an expensive restaurant, but I don't actually eat at these types of places very often and he kept it from feeling stuffy. Everything we ordered (most of it recommended by the waiter), was very, very, good, with the highlights of the evening being the filet mignon which had a fantastic flavor and almost melted in your mouth, and the desert. We ordered a 3 flavor sorbet and creme brulee to finish the meal. It's not inexpensive, but for those special occasions, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant. read more

I was really excited to entertain clients from Alaska at the Chophouse. These clients were in town for a conference. There were four of us eating at the Chophouse on a Wednesday evening. I really enjoy steak and I am very particular about the cut and preparation. I can say that it was the worst New York Strip I have ever eaten. I asked that it be cooked medium rare and it was served medium well. It was tough and flavorless. My colleague had a bone in Ribeye that was equally as bad. I didn't complain because I was hoping my two guests were having a different experience, and it is awkward to send a steak back at a restaurant I recommended. Not a good experience. Maybe the best steak I have ever had. I had the New York strip with the house seasoning cooked medium. It was cooked perfectly. The sides are served family style to share with the other people you are dining with. We had asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. The potatoes were ok. Service as very slow. There was two of us and it took almost three hours to eat dinner. We had the crab cake appetizer. The crab cake was fine but it was on an artichoke bed that was quite sour to the taste. Ordered a manhattan and the glass came half full. Ordered a 24 oz porter house to share. We wanted it between medium rare and medium and it came medium well. Terrible at best. We ordered asparagus and they brought us brussels sprouts. Asparagus came and the tips were green but the stalks were white and all different sizes. Terrible at best. We spoke with the manager and he graciously comped the steak, asparagus, and drink. I went there this Saturday for my birthday dinner. I was really disappointed in everything. The waitress was friendly but only checked on us once. My $46 steak was not cooked how I asked for. I didn't bother bc I was hungry and we had to leave to a concert afterwards. The bill was like $100 per person and they didn't even offer a complimentary dessert since it was a bday dinner. From what I see on other reviews it looks like it is something they do, but it was not offered to us. There are better steakhouses in town so I highly doubt i'll be back here. read more

First time dining at 801. My filet was very undercooked but was handled professionally by the wait staff and manager. My date enjoyed her meal and the house wines were fantastic. Portions on the sides were on the small side but we were dining on the Sunday dinner special. I will try 801 again hopefully meal prep is better. read more

My last visit at this 801 was not desirable enough that I would not go back to spend my $$. First, we sat at the bar and bar tender didn't even mention about the specials. We asked for the Happy Hour menu and he finally brought it to us. Then we ordered steak, it was the most disgusting steak I ever had this level of steak restaurant. First, he didn't even ask us how we want it to be done, gilled or pan fried. He just brought us a plate of chunk of burnt meat, which was completely dry and just looks/taste like a beef jerky. After that bar tender is gone, we checked with other server and he could tell that our steak was absolutely wrong and replaced with new one, but only for the amount left on the plate... Aren't your employees educated with quality and service at the level we expect? It is shameful to even bring that burnt steak to our table without hesitation. I contacted their customer service about our experience but 801 never responded to me with a single word. They obviously don't care. People, including me, go there with high expectation of food and service quality. We were really disappointed with what they offered to us that night. I really liked that place until last visit and used for personal and business occasions, but will not go back ever again. Better to go Sullivan's or Spencer's for the same $$ for better quality in downtown area. read more

This place is incredible. It's pricey so I only go for special occasions. I've been twice and every time the service was impeccable. The waitstaff is honest and is willing to take their time with the menu and answer any questions. The steaks are the best cut and cooked to perfection. This was the first place I was introduced to chocalate soufflé. It was incredible. The waiter asks if you want it ahead of time so that it is ready for you by time dessert rolls around. All was perfect except the steak was not cooked right. It was overdone, they replaced it, when it came it was too raw they cooked it some more, but still not cooked on the inside, a bit burnt on the outside. The cease salad was the best I've ever had, fresh anchovies in it was a nice touch. The scalloped potatoes, escargot, and french fried zucchini were delicious, ended with a chocolate souffle. The server was probably the best part of the experience. I would recommend it, but maybe avoid the steak. read more

So this was my second experience at 801 and both times I have had the same reaction. Yes this is a great steakhouse but not amazing. Amazing steakhouses include David Burke's in Chicago and Peter Lugar in New York - both are similarly priced to 801 but there is always something special about the evening. We went as a group of 6 for my mothers birthday. We shared multiple appetizers, salads, steaks, sides, and desserts. Everything was either good or great but never outstanding. I feel like I have experienced each one of the items before at cheaper prices at other restaurants. The service was great except for one of the servers yelling at our waiter while she placed our food on the table. It was a little awkward watching workers have issues with each other while setting our food. Do I recommend the place - sure - it is good - I just wish the quality matches the price. read more

I had a veal chop in a bone marrow butter bath.. It was like heaven to my tastebuds (and probably healthy enough to send to to the real place a bit earlier!). The sides were fantastic, as expected at a nice steakhouse. The reason they lost a star had nothing to do with my fantastic meal. I attended with two colleagues, who each ordered a filet medium. Though I prefer mine medium rare, medium should still give you a great, decently cooked piece of meat. What came out were flat, almost burger patty looking cuts of meat that were not at all appetite inspiring. Apparently, they tasted as they looked; overcooked and a bit dry. This is what a steakhouse should like! Great atmosphere (reminds me of Gallagher's in Midtown NYC) and very good food. My strip was a little under seasoned, but no biggie. I have been here several times and thought the experience was good but not great. My most recent experience was the same. The waiter claimed the broiler was running hot the night I was there. My steak was cooked medium rare but the outside was burned. To mask the flavor, the chef applied way too much salt to the steak. I could feel the salt grains crunching against my teeth. I have been to numerous steak houses around Omaha and Country. This place is expensive. The ambiance does not match the $$$$. The sides and dessert were amazing. The appetizer and steak left me unimpressed. The steak did not strike me of prime quality even though it was cooked to order (medium rare, giving it its best chance here). The server was impersonal but tolerable. Your $$$$ is better spent making the 15min drive out west. Just a side note to anyone on a budget, if you plan on ordering wine there are a less than a handful of bottles under $100 and maybe 1-2 under $60. Unfortunately, by the glass is not much cheaper. read more
