82 Queen did not live up to the high standards set by by other local establishments in Charleston such as Virginia's on King and Husk. The she-crab soup was incredibly rich, almost too rich, and the jambalaya was bland and the shrimp and grits fell far short of the rendition of the same dish offered at Virginia's on King. Can't say a bad thing about this place! We stopped in on a whim, having had a bad experience at a close by establishment, and were so pleased that we did! We ate in the bar area, which was a lovely spot to sit and watch the rain falling. The bartenders were top-notch, greeted us warming, and left is wanting for nothing. DO NOT GO! We have eaten at many other Charleston restaurants and many other places outside of Charleston and I would not return to 82 Queen ever! We sat upstairs with 4 other tables. Our server was new which we had no issue navigating. He made a few recommendations but seemed to be new to the menu. We ordered a bottle of wine, she crab soup, caesar salad with fried oysters and a few other small plates to share. While we were waiting for our food, we heard 2 other tables send back a fish entree (saying no need to replace) and she crab soup for being too salty. The she crab soup came. Nice flavor but really no crab. (We had she crab soup elsewhere in town and had a good amount of crab.) Our server made a mistake and ordered us macncheese and fried oysters. We let them know the error and they left the dish because it was their error. We picked off the fried oysters.... heavily battered and salty. Our salad then come also with oysters.....again salty batter. After seeing the other tables complain and leave and then our own experience, we cancelled the other plates and paid and left. I could not recommend this. While in Charleston we ate at many other places.... in descending order of greatness....HUSK, 167 Raw, SNOB, FIG, Husk Bar. This place was thoroughly terrible. read more

Went there with a party of 4 between lunch and dinner. Just wanted to have some drinks and little snacks. They don't have waitresses between those times which was disappointing but because of the pretty ambience, we decided to stay. We had two cocktails which tasted awful and were really overpriced! I visited Charleston before and dined at 82 Queen and loved it, so upon my recent visit I suggested my party and I eat here. I made a reservation for the visit. Once we got to the restaurant, there was a group a head of us getting seated shortly while we were checking in. We were asked to take a seat while that group was being seated. While we were waiting to be seated, another group walked in (with reservations) and were seated immediately upon entry into the restaurant. I questioned why my group wasn't immediately seated like the group that was there before us and after us. The reason stated by the host was we wanted inside seating verses out and he needed to make sure a table was available because it was really busy inside. Ok... great. Once inside of the restaurant, there were several EMPTY tables, which perplexed us even more so. The main reason for wanting inside was to avoid insects and bugs, but that really didn't solve that problem because I killed multiple insects at the table. The whole feeling of the evening and the restaurant just didn't sit well with us, so after just ordering the she crab soup (which was thick and blah), we decided to leave. read more

I arrived with a large party and we were well accommodated in a room by ourselves. The service was exceptional but the food was not what I expected. I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. Even though we were seated inside we had issues with gnats flying into our drinks at the table. Our server had to keep replacing our wines. I should say the wine selection and cocktail menu was incredible. The menu seemed incredibly decadent. The bowls of salad were pretty large however the soup was somewhat small. I wasn't as impressed by the fact that there were only 2 soups on the menu and the vegetable soup was made with chicken stock (which was something we were not warned about at the table before we ordered). The chive and cheddar biscuits tasted somewhat like red lobser biscuits and I was expecting more flavor. I was excited about the variety of foods on the dinner menu however when the plates came out I was somewhat shocked at how small they were. I think I have been to tapas restaurants that serve food off the same sized plates. I ordered the salmon with brown rice & cow beans, and garlic beurre blanc. The salmon was suppose to come out medium but was slightly over and somewhat dry. That wasn't even the biggest issue. The cow beans and brown rice was incredibly dry. The garlic beurre blanc wasn't visible but I could taste a little bit of it under the salmon. I wish there was more of a sauce on the plate so I could finish my beans. The dessert and after dinner drinks menu is slightly confusing. Someone at our table ordered limoncello and instead of getting a shot ended up with a limoncello cake. Overall I was expecting to be blown away but the food was somewhat mediocre. read more

Wanted to go in to check out the famous place but was super put off by the attitude of the girls at the front desk. One was particularly snarly, gave me the fakest smile, and then wisphered something to the other girl as soon as I turned my back. The hotel reccomended 82 Queen for dinner to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. It called for rain, was hot and humid so we opted to sit inside upstairs. Menu was very interesting with many upscale low country dishes. We stared with the grilled peach and the Sweet Corn Johny Cakes. The Johnny cakes were delicious. The peaches which others had rated high on yelp we both found boring. I don't think they were ripe and not sweet at all. Maybe when peaches are in season they are better. For dinner, I had the Shrimp, Scallops and grits with scallions and goat cheese grits and Carolina salsa. It was just delicious. I think you can go to 20 different places in Charleston and have shrimp and grits 20 different ways and they are all good in their own rite. My wife had the grilled wreckfish over grits which was one of the specials. It to was excellent. We were full and opted out of dessert. In all a good menu, good service, a good food. Not the best meal I have ever had but it was very good read more

We were recently in Charleston for five days, and during that time, we visited 82 Queen twice. The first time was for drinks and dessert, and we sat at the bar. The bartenders were super friendly and helpful. The limoncello mascarpone cake was one of the best things I have ever eaten. If you are ever there on a night that it is being offered, do not skip it! Our second visit was for dinner and we were just as blown away. We sat in the courtyard. It was a little chilly out, but they had the heaters going which made it very enjoyable. We had the maple glazed pork belly appetizer and it was beyond amazing. My husband had the fish and grits, which he was very happy with. I don't generally care for fish, but I did try his and it was so good that even I would have ordered it. I got the marinated tomato and cucumber salad with a side of the gouda bacon mac and cheese. I was expecting to regret ordering a salad for dinner, but that did not happen. The salad was much larger than expected and every single component was amazing. I wasn't sure how the vinegar based marinade on the cucumber and tomato would work with a creamy dressing, but it was delicious. No regrets at all. The gouda mac was great and the portion was more than enough for several people to share. We were so impressed with the food, service, and ambiance. We will make sure to go back every time we are in Charleston. Side note: yes, as some have mentioned, the prices are high. This is not abnormal in downtown Charleston. Basing your negative review on the prices is totally ridiculous since they have a menu right outside of the entrance that shows their prices. If you don't want to pay normal Charleston prices for an amazing dining experience, just turn around and go up the street to Subway. read more

Atmosphere left something to be desired, we were ushered into a small, very quiet, very empty room. She-crab soup was tasty, but a little too rich for my preference. The wine special was a $27 bottle of some nasty concoction with a twist-off cap. The real kicker, however, came when I ordered the chef's special, a steak with grits and asparagus. I ordered it medium-rare, as I do any steak at a restaurant (unless I'm somewhere suspect). Let's be clear what medium-rare is. Rare is red in the middle, medium-rare is pink, and might have some red in there. This puppy came out cooked all the way through and crusty on the outside. I sent it back. No harm done, just bring me another one that's cooked the way I ordered. Apparently I ruffled some feathers back there, because the next one that came out would have had to beg a Frenchman to be called 'bleu'. It was raw. The waitress, who was actually very friendly and helpful, offered to take it back and have it cooked more. I'm not waiting on my steak to be brought out a third time. I can train an ape to cook a steak medium-rare. Apparently the chef's at this place cannot be, and are prideful when asked to step up to the task. Overpriced for some food that wasn't up to par. I have been here many many times. I always come here when i go to Charleston. it's a must. It's a lovely outside setting. The service is prompt and friendly, the food is wonderful. My first time having she crab soup and I gotta say it's pretty awesome. The chicken and crab dish was great as well. They know how to make some real cheesy buttery grits. Would be 5 stars if not for the very slow service. To start on a positive note, I would like to compliment them for accommodating us as a large party on short notice. Also, the she crab soup was very good as was the service. I did not care for the shrimp and grits. It was sophomorically prepared with stiff, cakey grits topped with mediocre shrimp, bacon, cheddar, scallions and a BBQ sauce. There was nothing special about it and the favors did not come together well with the BBQ sauce overpowering everything. I was a little hesitant to eat here after reading a few of the 3 star reviews but we decided to go here on our one night in town and were pleasantly suprised... I had the chefs special filet with potato cake and goat cheese and with a side of grilled corn salad. All were very good and cooked and seasoned to near perfection. Service was good, not overly attentive with I do not personally enjoy, but no lacking either.. Lovely restaurant, but don't get the brisket. It had a much too sweet and cloying sauce and the meat was tough and stringy. The requested sharp knife helped. Our group of 4 had a reservation on Saturday Mar 8. There was a short wait, but plenty of room at the bar. Our table was nicely located in a relatively quite room. Each of us had 2 courses. The favorite was a pork chop. Two had a "cauliflower steak". This was served as florets. Having seen a recipe for cauliflower steak recently this was a disappointment. My wife and I had great expectation for this four star rated restaurant. What we learned was that they have a new chef and new kitchen staff, with lots of inexperience. Still serving the same menu (shrimp and grits, crab cakes, she-crab soup, etc.). The soup was excellent, the shrimp good but not great. The crab cakes were cold. On a second try, they were warm, but got cold quickly, since the plate had not been warmed. Apparently they have a new chef and staff, who are "still working out the kinks." We were very disappointed with our meal at this restaurant. The Manhattans were well-made but that was the last we saw of a decent dining experience. I ordered the soft shell crab for $34--a special of the day--and it came covered in an overdone, shake-n-bake coating that completely obliterated the crab. It was terrible. The Caesar salad was grated Kraft cheese, the dressing from a bottle, no anchovies, no hint of lemon and stale croutons. The bread wasn't even tasty. We had no appetite for dessert. However, we would rather skip the waiter's lengthy sales pitch description of the dishes, which is becoming common in this category of restaurants. Stopped by for a quick bite after learning our first choice restaurant was closed between lunch and dinner. We ordered the fried green tomato appetizer over grits with pimento cheese. The tomato was not seasoned and the grits had great texture but were bland as well. My crab cake entree was just okay. The rice was not very well cooked with clumps of dryness and the broccoli was greasy. Ordered a shrimp wrap to go. That was decent. When we ate here, our party was seated in the courtyard outside the restaurant. I always say that it is easier to get the feel of a place by sitting inside. 82 queen is hard to grasp when you get inside. Some of the tables are outside and some are inside. We had to wait for our reservation due to the restaurant being backed up. That gave us the opportunity to get a drink at the bar. There were some patio seats but they were wet and dirty. I would think that the restaurant would wipe those off when they are getting the restaurant setup. On to the good parts. Our server was very good. He had wit and a comedic niceness about him. He had great recommendations and he joked more as the night went on. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits. It was excellent. It was also served "please don't touch the plate" hot. The thing I love about Shrimp and Grits is that they are a different every where you go. I would get these again. My family also liked their meal. For a classic meal, it would have been nice to see the manager walking around or a chef visiting tables. I would recommend asking for a seat inside to get more ambiance. Went there for lunch. Beautiful outdoor garden seating on a warm December day. My wife and I ordered a salad with shrimp. I'm sure the lettuce was taken from a store lettuce box. The red leaf lettuce had already turned. It was slimy and had effected the greens too. When sent back, better, but still not fresh. For the price, I expected fresh, not dated boxed lettuce. Beautiful old wooden bar, good drinks, excellent service and lush, sultry atmosphere if eating outside. The food, however, was mediocre. We returned the she crab soup because, well, there was not any crab in it! It was just a bowl of thick gelatinous goo. The waiter was nice enough to say it would be taken off the bill, but it showed up on it anyway. The "lump" crab cakes likewise had nary a lump of crab. The waiter explained that they "shred" their crab instead. Whatever, I have had good lump crab cakes and she crab soup before, and they always have identifiable, tasty pieces of crab meat. Went to 82 Queen this past Saturday and had a nice experience. I love the atmosphere and feel of the restaurant in an old house, though the decor with pictures of the dogs may need a little updating. Maria, our server, was knowledgeable, friendly and very attentive. I had the grouper special which was cooked to perfection and quite delicious, though I thought the portion was a bit small. I finished with a white chocolate martini for dessert, which was a great ending to a very good meal. read more
