Celebrated adult daughter's birthday 06/19/2012. Perfect weather allowed us to dine in the back courtyard. Service was excellent. We ordered snapper, crab cakes, okra and cheese grits. All were beautifully prepared and served hot. Wine list was adequate and sensibly priced. We did not opt for dessert & coffee, deciding instead to wander through downtown Charleston in search of ice cream for our ten year old granddaughter. All agreed we had a delicious, relaxing dinner. We really liked everything about 82 Queen. The courtyard was amazingly spacious once you went inside - yet not noisy. I had the swordfish with pesto which was a treat and my husband raved about the NY strip steak. The portion was so large that he took some home. My family and I made reservations for Mother's Day brunch. The restaurant is beautiful with seating both outside and indoors which is great for a warm day like today. We arrived towards the end of brunch service and ordered soon after arriving. The biscuits with marmalade (?) were amazing. My bloody mary was good, but not spicy enough. We were served really quickly which was great because we had two small children with us. I ordered the crabcake benedict. I was pleasantly surprised that it was served without bread, a fried green tomato was the base. Unfortunately the fried green tomato had no taste. And the poached egg was a bit over-cooked but the crabcake was excellent. And the grits were awesome. Everyone was enjoying their entrees but unfortunately my sister found a dead bug in her salad. We grabbed the first server we could find so that they could clear the plate quickly. He didn't really say anything just scowled at the plate. Our server didn't come by to apologize, just came by a few minutes later and said they were making her a new one. But she was beyond disgusted at that point and didn't want anything else, just another drink. They comped her meal of course but we were expecting a little more of an apology or some effort to rectify the situation. Either the expo person didn't do their job or they left her plate outside for some amount of time. I've worked in the industry so I know that these things happen but more could have been done to ease her mind. Overall I'd definitely come back for a romantic dinner or small brunch. Overall a good experience and the award winning she crab was pretty tasty.. very creamy (it fills the belly). The grouper was not so yummy and the reason for a 3 star review. It had a funny taste (breading was off) which didn't mesh with the cornmeal base. My friend had the duck which was quite exceptional. The overall atmosphere upstairs was peaceful and the server was extremely knowledgeable. The drinks were well made (dark n stormy) and promptly delivered. I recommend giving it a shot if you want to shell out some cash for a decent meal but go with a smaller party and sit outside on a warm summer evening and your experience will be better than mine. read more

Very disappointing! She crab soup was so thick a spoon could stand on its' own! Mussels very bland. Pork sandwich was very dry, uneventful. Jambalaya had little to write home about. Banana pudding was served in canning jar (cute) but bananas were served on the side and not layered in the pudding. The winner here was the pecan pie, with or without the caramel sauce. read more

Shrimp and Grits.....now this dish has never appealed to me, but I decided to give it a try on the recommendation of a friend. I'm so glad I did. I've been told that 82 Queen has the best shrimp and grits in Charleston and I've got to agree. Obviously I haven't tried shrimp and grits anywhere, but these were so good it required a review. With so many great restaurants in Charleston you can't afford to have an off night. We had never been to 82 Queen but apparently they had an off night. I started with the She Crab soup which I would recommend. It was the best thing I had for the whole meal. My wife had the special grilled watermelon salad with Bibb lettuce and blueberry vinaigrette. The lettuce seemed to be old and there was not much flavor to the dressing at all. It was very disappointing. I had the special which was a venison over spinach with sweet potato gnocchi. The venison was very good and cooked perfectly. The gnocchi was very rubbery and lacked flavor. My wife ordered the Southern Chicken off of the menu. The chicken was very dry. So dry that when she cut it it crumbled apart. The waitstaff was very nice and attentive. The manager offered to replace the chicken but my wife just ate the rice and beans that came with it. Needless to say, our first experience there was not one that would take us back any time soon. read more

We ate here yesterday on our first trip to Charleston. The food was AMAZING!! Compliments to the chef! Also, our waitress Mel was so hospitable and even took into consideration my recent diagnosis with celiacs and checked with the kitchen to make sure what I ate and drank wouldn't get me sick. She also told us about the spooky jail tour that we thoroughly enjoyed and about coming back for a night cap that evening. When we came back we hung out in the bar with our bartender BAILEY!! She was so sweet and had us cracking up! She also made sure nothing I drank had gluten. The shrimp and grits.... Omg!! And the limoncello and ask Bailey about the drink called the Charleston something with champagne in it. Food and drinks I will crave till my next time back!! read more

Visited 4/18/16 had shrimp and grits, mussels,crab cake and she crab soup, ordered a beer and wine. The beer came but the wine was forgotten. We had to ask for the wine after waiting some time for waiter to return. The Shrimp and grits were just ok. The She crab soup was very rich and Served lukewarm. The Mussels were brought to the table with no fork to use. By the the time a fork arrived the mussels were cold. The waiter asked if my wife wanted pepper for her soup although she said yes it never arrived. Overall if you want good mussels Bonefish Grill has better. If want shrimp and grits go to Matt the Miller. Mediocre food and very poor service. Quite a disappointing meal. Our rating is 2 stars. read more

Whoa! My friend and I have just left this restaurant exhausted! We arrived for our 6:30 reservation and by 8:30 had only received 2 of our 3 dishes. The place is lovely and we requested the garden. There are several slightly raised areas with tables where people can be a little more protected from the constant rush Of waiters practically running to keep Up With their tasks. Our table, as were 2 others, was near a door to a major kitchen I guess. We ordered our 2 cocktails and later our appetizers and dinners. As soon as the Cocktails arrived, one of the appetizers (shrimp and grits) was plonked Down in front of my friend. She asked That it be taken back for awhile while we enjoyed Our drinks. Fine. The waiter did ask when we were ready for the first course and we ordered wine and the course came. Shrimp and grits were Great, she crab soup was gloppy and tasteless. Eventually the salads came, spinach and Caesar, which were ok, certainly not great. More wine ordered, more waiters rushing Past and by now we were laughing at the amazing scene. Had to ask for water, and at some Point The waiter said the mussels were on Their way out. 15 minutes later we asked what was up And he said "I'm a little busy." We decided To cancel the mussels and Asked For The Check. Overall, it Was Saturday night and tables should not have Been placed by the door Where so much traffic passed. Besides waiters, Our view also Included a stream of Busboys carrying Piles of dishes. It Was not Just in our our view, but 1 foot From our table! I must say that all the staff was working very hard and fast. It's a complicated layout, but we did not enjoy what we had hoped for which was a relaxing Meal in a Lovely garden. read more

Was a loyal fan for quite a while; however, the last dinner was lousy. Really bad service-not just slow-but we had to ask for everything. Can we have a knife for the meat? can we have some bread? Can we have some coffee with dessert? The service made for a long night. Food was cold when served. Didn't even bother asking for a warm meal as appetites we shot by then. The biggest problem was that I emailed the restaurant about the food and service, and was ignored. Being a local, I can walk the additional 100 feet to Husk, or maybe even the 150 feet to Poogan's Porch. Fantastic atmosphere and great food! The She Crab soup was especially great. We went for lunch on a Friday and did not need a reservation.

First, we were seated promptly at our reservation time. Since we booked on Open Table, we didn't have the option to choose inside (air conditioned) or outside. Of course we were seated outside because it was very hot and humid. Try for inside, because although they have fans outdoors, certain areas get no air circulation at all and it became a little uncomfortable. Our waitress was Jenay and she was fantastic! Sweet, attentive, helpful and cared if we had an enjoyable meal. She Crab Soup was very good, but though it is supposedly the best in the area, I've had better. A bit to thick for me. My biggest problem was timing. We had our drink and appetizer served together, which was fine, but I had planned on having a glass of wine and leisurely dinner. I was 3/4 finished with my soup when a server came rushing out with our dinners. We arrived at 7pm and had our dinner dishes were cleared away by 7:42. We were stuffed, skipped our wine and left without dessert. On the upside, the bouillabaisse was very good. Our first dinner in Charleston, and I was really disappointed. When you are paying that kind of price for dinner, it's not all for the food - it's for the experience. 2 more nights in town and I'm hopeful Hank's Seafood will be a better choice. read more

Beautiful atmosphere but the food is not good. We went there about a month ago on a Sunday night around 8:00 and sat outside in a beautiful garden. There may have been 8 other tables filled. The wait staff was running all over the place like they were cleaning from the week past which was very annoying. The food was bland and unremarkable. If you like great atmosphere and don't care how your food tastes go. For my money Charleston has many other great restaurants and this one is making it on reputation from the past and a great setting. read more

Unfortunatley, the time that we ate here, was between lunch and dinner and only a bar menu was available. We decided just to get a few appetizers and a beer. The fried green tomatoes were amazing!!! It was hard to eat any others after these because they just did not compare. The grits and pepper sauce that they were served over was just as delicious! However, the portion was really small. Three small slices for $8 seemed a little expensive. We also got the fried okra with marinara sauce and fresh parm. It was just as good as the fried green tomatoes. I had never seen whole okras fried, but it was very yummy. I can't speak to the rest of the menu, but what we had was good. read more

Let me start by saying the fried green tomatoes were outstanding and so was the accompanying bloody mary. The goodness ended right there. The lobster was chewy and my date's grits were cold. Maybe we caught them at a bad time but there are too many other restaurants in Chas to keep giving 2nd chances. read more

This is the best she crab soup I've ever had, and that is saying a lot. Wow. Rough night. Getting the good taken care of first -- my server, Amanda, was very professional, very on-the-ball, and generally up to my standards as a server. I used to wait tables, and I have high standards (if I coulda done it better and can't see why my server didn't, I'm not amused), but she met or exceeded them all. Bravo, Amanda... I tried to tip accordingly. Now... the rest. She-crab soup: Just fine. Nothing special for Charleston, but decently good. Wine: limited by-the-glass selection, but I found a good pinot grigio I was happy with. I ordered the duck because a) I like duck, b) the things it was prepared with sounded really good, and c) Amanda recommended it. But when it arrived, it was really dry. Not, like, spit-sucking dry, when you feel like you've been in a desert for a week after you take the first bite, but WAY drier than I expect duck to be. Amanda offered to get me something else, but I was ravenously hungry, and dressing each bite with a healthy dose of the spinach-'n'-stuff it was served with made it borderline OK. Amanda spoke to the chef, who was apparently duly apologetic, and my dessert was comp'ed. Here, though, I screwed up and went for the seasonal peach creme brulee. The best I can say about this was that it was nothing special. The worst I can say about it is that peach is a great flavor for many things, but creme brulee is apparently not one of them. Complicating matters, I was seated next to the kind of party that should be outside, in a private room, or turned out into the street. They were loud, inconsiderate, and generally obnoxious, and from the sounds of things, I'd be willing to bet a sizable amount that they stiffed their server. When drunk people say "Uh, we don't know, but there's a wad of cash in there for you, and we'll sign whatever you bring us!" this does not, in my experience, usually bode well for the server. It was a group of at least a dozen folks, but it wasn't grat'ed, I guess due to the split check. Maybe their server suspected this was what would happen and wanted to stay on their good side by not suggesting mid-meal that they use indoor voices. No clue. But good lord were they awful. So bad that I barely noticed the dramatic wobble in my table until unbalancing it at the wrong time sent my wine and my ice water flying up, out of their glasses, and into the candle, which was suddenly extinguished. When I go to a restaurant where I'm going to spend between $70 and $90 on a meal for ONE, I expect more out of a restaurant like that than I'd get from Chili's or something. Next time, I'll go to FIG, McCrady's, or Husk, all of which I can give glowing recommendations, especially as compared to 82 Queen. So if you're at 82 Queen's door and tempted to stop, walk the extra two doors down and see if Husk can seat you. So, if you must eat at 82 Queen, ask for one of Amanda's tables. But unless you're THAT hot to trot for peaches, opt out of the peach creme brulee. And if you're seated next to a huge, loud party, don't be me and feel so bad about asking to move that you don't do it. Seriously. I regret having had to spend time there. Here's hoping my fellow yelpers continue to have better luck than I. read more

The food overall was good, but I'm giving it 3 stars because I got the BLT, which had fried green tomatoes on it, and on my entire sandwich there was only one tomato. There was a whole bunch of bacon, a little lettuce and one measly tomato. For a $10 sandwich on white bread, I expected more. read more

We had brunch here a few weeks ago. EXCELLENT all around. Two of us, myself as well as my dad, have gluten allergies. They were extremely accomodating to our requests. The Bloody Marys were to die for. The menu, especially for brunch, was extensive with a lot of good options. Everyone in our party was happy with their meals. My wife and I went to 82 Queen based on trip advisor. We had no problems making our reservations a few days out. This is a cozy restaurant tucked behind the main building. We were seated in a beautiful garden type setting. The service was top notch. Kenny our server was spot on providing us with the appropriate amount of attention. The food was excellent. I was trying the she crab soup throughout Charleston and 82 Queen was the best. Definitely add this restaurant to your vacation plans. read more

We had lunch at 82 Queen and it was excellent. I had the She crab chowder and jambalaya and my wife the house salad and the chicken and crab on grits. Everything was delicious. Our lunch plus three glasses of wine in total was $78. We sat in the garden area and while it was a cloudy and a bit chilly day it was still very nice. Our server, Rob, was excellent and had no problem recommending what he felt was great as well as what was average such as pulled pork which he said you could find in many restaurants. read more

We were starving and trying to find a brunch spot in downtown Charleston on a Sunday - bad idea. Everywhere we went had a 30-60 minute wait, so when we found 82 Queen, we thought a 10 minute wait didn't sound too bad. We should have gone elsewhere. We ended up waiting about 20-30 minutes. Then we we got seated, it took another 10-20 minutes to get service. Besides the lack of service, the food was just okay. Nothing fantastic and not gross, but definitely not worth the price or wait. We had two different benedicts with absolutely no flavor and lukewarm. I wouldn't go here again. read more

Bar is great comfortable and friendly. Bar tender knows how to mix an excellent cocktail! Diners where very good. Excellent house salad great salad dressing. We had the crab cake diner it was really good but so big we could only manage to eat half of it. Our other meal was the pork chop with baked beans (great flavor) and mac and cheese fried. Just had dinner at 82 Queen tonight. I wish I had spoken to someone before I left but I'm leaving a comment instead. I've lived in Charleston for 40+ years and never eaten at the famous 82 Queen. I have never been more disappointed. I ordered the fried chicken on a bed of Mac & Cheese with a few strands of pulled pork.. It sounded delicious on the menu. Quite pricey but everything on the menu was pricey. The chicken came to the table with a burnt crust, so dry that you could not eat it. My husband had a tasteless dry steak and a bread pudding that was, you guessed it, as dry as cornbread. Needlesd to say we will not be recommending this restaurant nor will we returning. There are so many fabulous restaurants in Charleston. Don't waste your time or money at this one. read more

I took out of town family guests here and we all enjoyed it very much. We had a lovely lunch in the outdoor garden area and the food was excellent. I had a plate with a slice of fried green tomato, a small crab cake, a piece of chicken breast in she-crab gravy, and cheesy grits. that sounds like a lot of food, but the portions were just right - not overwhelming. Delicious. Everyone in my party enjoyed their food, including those who had dessert. Lunch is a little pricey but not bad and well worth it. I paid $180 for an extremely disappointing dinner for two I could have cooked infinitely better myself. The fried oysters were cold, the she crab soup was bland, the $12 crab cake appetizer was an OK small crab cake, the signature shrimp and grits was literally not worth $10 but cost three times that, and the special of the day with ribeye and twice baked "lobster" potato was not good, I have never had a colder/blander twice baked potato, I don't know what lobster they were talking about as there was none in the potato, and the steak was only OK, could have been cooked better at home any day. Definitely not coming back, extremely overpriced with sub-par food ripping people off by taking advantage of Charleston's fine dining reputation. I would not recommend this to a friend. read more
