Hopped into 900 Grayson on Grayson street. I love Chicken and Waffles (see my rankings below) so I went with the Demon Lover which is around $15. The waffles here are not the flat variety ( think waffle house from the South) nor are they the super fluffy version which I prefer they are somewhere in the middle. The chicken as others have noted have a little bit of a spicy kick to it so if you like some HEAT to your chicken I could see how this place could really appeal to you. I went with the maple syrup initially but quickly realized that I needed the gravy so I asked for that after my initial serving came out. I thought the food was decent but not great (hence the 3 star rating). I do acknowledge I could see how people love this place. The service was very friendly and the layout itself was very welcoming as well. I have it at #9 of 13 Bay Area spots for Chicken and Waffles below. I love Chicken and Waffles. When I go to ATL, CHI, STL, NYC, KC, I typically look to eat at least at one Chicken and Waffle spot for breakfast/brunch in the same vein that I look for a noteworthy Steakhouse in the area for Dinner. When I look at reviews sometimes just want to know where to go or how a user compares one venue against another to see if we have similar tastes. Went in at 1130, sat down promptly. Served water, given menus. Fast forward 15 mins.. no one came over yet. Server finally came. SHE did not even give us today's special. Ordered Grayson burger, Bbq sauce on the side. Burger was cooked medium, as ordered; but was greasy, not flame broiled :-( BBQ sauce was runny, good thing we asked for it on the side. Ahi tuna sandwich - good. Slaw was crunchy and well seasoned. Ladyboy salad - noodles not cooked well. Prawns are perfect..not overly done. Herb Fries definitely need more herbs. A lot more. I love this place. The restaurant is very cozy and cute. I usually come during weekends at around 11 and the wait for a 2-3 person table is a good 30-40 min wait. But the food is definitely worth the wait. The food here is AMAZING, I usually order the demon lover (fried chicken with waffles). It tastes like heaven! They do make the perfect chicken waffle. The chicken was nicely fried, very tender and juicy and it goes perfect with the gravy. Very flavorable. and personally, I like the waffle with syrup. The service is decent given that it is a very busy restaurant. Waiters are enthusiastic and polite. Can't wait to go back to try their other dishes! read more

We haven't been here in a while as we've been very busy on Saturdays and they're not open on Sundays, so I requested that we have brunch here before my winter break was over. We ate here on a Friday around 10 am, so there wasn't a wait (YES!!!). Expect a wait though on Saturdays and generally around lunch time. I had my usual--the Demon Lover--but this time I subbed hash browns for the Waffle (which tends to be a little flat and soggy for me), and added a sunny side up egg. I wish they'd make Belgian Waffles. I make Belgian Waffles at home and they don't take much longer than regular waffles to make. The friend chicken paillard was nicely seasoned, crunchy, albeit a tad dry but nothing a little cream gravy won't solve. They give you two pieces of chicken, so don't worry about portion size. They sprinkle some chile flakes on top of the gravy, so it has a nice kick to it. You have to try their house made sauce too on your eggs or hashed browns. The hubby had their breakfast of bacon, eggs, hash browns and toast. He loved it. The bacon is a nice portion and is cooked just the way he likes it--not dry and over browned. They serve house made jam (mango peach this time) with their toast. We've had lunch here before as well, and I don't think you can go wrong with their salads and burger. They also have pastries and cookies, as well as espresso, so if you're feeling a continental breakfast, you can definitely stop by here for that. Parking was a bit of a pain in the area on a Friday, but I was able to get street parking on my second round. read more

Home of the famous Demon Lover: fried chicken and waffle!! I usually don't like gravy, but the way they make it here is so tasty. First of all, brunch time on the weekends can get really busy because the restaurant itself is quite small. Wait can be around 45 minutes, but honestly it's well worth the wait. I've only ever had the Demon Lover, and will continuously come back just for that. The waffle is a giant delicious and fluffy waffle, and the fried chicken is kind of like delicious chicken strips which I honestly appreciate LOL It comes with either gravy or syrup for $15, or $17 with both sides. The food is always consistent taste wise and a good portion to feel full afterwards. I've gotten their mimosa before for a drink and WOW is it strong I loved it! Love love this place! It's a flat box home redone to a restaurant. Everytime I have gone here there are always many waiting for a table. The inside of the restuarant is warm and friendly. It's very tight fitting to try and accommodate many people. The backyard patio was turned into a dining area as well to fit more and quite nice during the summer days. This place is not for large groups but always a crowd so expect the wait as its small dining area! My favorite here is the Demon's Lover which is the chicken and waffles with their gravy. The chicken looks almost overdone on the deep fry but once drenched with gravy, it's so good! I love it with hot sauce to add that kick to it. I have had the Charlie burger which is the rare Ahi Tuna and cole slaw. Soo good. We also had the Steak Frites which is the most expensive of their menu. The steak was not as tender but tasty with fries. This is what my son likes. They have Mimosa but its called something else. That is $8.00. The prices are a little steep but still very good and done well every time. The one star off was for the wait and the price. I will definitely come back. I've been coming to this place for quite some time, and the customer service has never been that great, but the food is good so I never pay it too much attention because everyone has bad days. The thing is........I've eaten at this restaurant 7 times, and all times - none one of the owners seem too friendly! (All 3 of them) They are always very short, rushing when helping us, or when asking a question. Keep in mind there are 3 owners (Twin brothers, and an Asian guy) Yesterday my daughter and I stopped by for some brunch and one of the twin brothers seated us. My daughter and I was seated at 12:45, and as we were seated I watched others come in after us and their order was taken within 5 minutes after being seated. I finally spoke up and asked the Asian guy "Hello excuse me Sir, do you think our order will be taken soon?" He replied and said "Oh let me see if I can get someone to help you!" Keep in mind the people who came in after us was served within minutes, and given water. The waitress walked over to a table behind us to take these other people order who had came in behind us, and I politely asked "What about us, when will someone take our order?" The Asian guy then told the nice waitress "Oh take their order!" By this time it was 1:27. Our food didn't come out until 1:50. Once again I didn't want to make a big deal or make it a race issue but clearly that's what it was all about. As I was waiting for my food I asked one of the twin brothers (Owner) if I could speak with him for a brief second. He didn't want to walk up to my table, so I had to speak to him from a distance. He was at other customer's table laughing and talking to them. As he stood back at the table across from us packing to go boxes I politely told him about the lengthy time we've been waiting just to get our order taken, how we didn't get water/silverware, and how the Asian guy didn't want to serve us. His response was "Oh we are pretty busy, but let me go check on your food!" He never came back over to our table to say anything. Our waiter was very nice and understanding because she witnessed all of this happen. When it was time to pay for my food, she gave me a free cookie. Yesterday was my last time coming to this racist a** establishment! Just beware if you're brown/black.......you will definitely be treated with no respect, and it's very obvious these guys are RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cute hidden place in Berkeley. When we first came by, they were shutting down breakfast and getting ready for lunch. So we had to wait, but we decided to just to come back another time because I really wanted to try our their demon lover. So breakfast ends at 10:45am. After this they can serve you drinks as you wait for the lunch hour to come by, but they can't serve you any food. Service: Our waitress was friendly and professional. She got things done, which is what I like. No complaints. Food: Demon Lover - YUMMY! I didn't like the sound of fried chicken and waffles, but after trying this. It was all I could think about! My friend had some kind of skillet with potatoes, sausages and apples... yes apples... I didn't like it too much because the apples gave it a tart taste that didn't go well with the potatoes. They won't seat you until your entire party is there, even if it's just a party of 2. Kind of ridiculous. Food: Of course I ordered the Demon Lover with the gravy AND syrup on the side. It looked better than it tasted. The waffle was flat and not crispy. Although the batter was perfectly brown and crisp, there seemed to be more than the chicken. Overall, I thought it was overrated. I knew that this would be the cased based on other reviews, but this was the only time I could arrive at. The man in charge took us to a table and explained that they are transitioning, the ktichen was closed, but he would be happy to seat us, give us drinks, and let us wait. Waiting is what we did, and it was nice to banter with the staff as they prepaired for the brunch rush. I enjoyed how I had a pitched of water on my table for me to refill my glass at my convicence. I almost exclusively drink water when I go out, and often times it is a lot of water. We both knew that we had to get chicken and waffles, hell it's the profile picture for the buisness here on help. We were served quick, and not disapointed by the presentation, portions, or flavor of the dish. The chicken had a custom breading, and was boneless (a major plus compared to Roscos). It has a little zest, which was added to by the gravy that featured a topping of red pepper flakes. The waffle was, to my supriuse, wheat based. The custom suryp was so good I wish I could have taken a bottle home with me. All in all it was probably the best chicken and waffles I have ever had. It just made me happy to eat! If I find myself coming back to live / go to school at Berkeley I know that I could become a regular and dine off their wide array of dishes. Excellent service and awesome homely feel! They were super accommodating, seating a party of 6 pretty fast for no reservation, and super friendly with the rest of the service. I ordered the chicken and waffles (demon lover) and the watermelon agua fresco and both were great. This chicken was super crispy while still tender and both the gravy and syrup tasted great and the spices complimented it well! We got seated within 30 minutes and the place was decently sized, not too big but not small either. Near the counter they have some cool machines to play with if you insert a quarter. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles and was surprised you had to pick either the sweet syrup or the savory sauce that goes with the chicken. Otherwise you would have to pay an extra $1 for the other sauce as well. The dishes were a bit pricier than your average brunch (my dish was 17) and there ended up being a piece of paper that was fried along with my chicken. When I told the server he immediately apologized and took the chicken. When he returned, he brought extra pieces which I appreciated. Demon Lover is a must (my personal favorite chicken and waffles dish...ever), and the house salad is refreshing and a perfect accompaniment to any dish. But not only do they have delicious food, they have impeccable customer service. During the COVID-19 outbreak, my girlfriend and I ordered delivery from Caviar. Something happened with the driver and hours later, my girlfriend and I went ahead and decided to pick up our food. The owners promptly remade my food and coffee when I got there, at no additional charge without even having to ask. These guys are the real deal. As small business are some of the most affected by the pandemic, I urge everyone who hasn't tried out 900 Grayson to do so and support them during this time. 900 Grayson is the place to get chicken and waffles! The dish by itself is relatively common at brunch spots, but this restaurant offers gravy as a dip which makes it #1 in my book. When you order the Demon Lover (bc you will), you can get syrup or gravy for free, or pay $2 more for both. I recommend you get both at least once in your life. Create the perfect bite by getting some chicken, some waffle, and dip it in both sauces. I think both are fantastic, but if I had to choose one, I'd pick the gravy in the future because I'm more of a savory kind of gal. That being said, the syrup here was better than other syrups I've had elsewhere! Tip: if you don't like to dunk your food in sauce like I do, consider splitting with a friend! I personally, do not know why it's called that yet I cannot lie and it's probably one of the best combination of food I've ever had. Buttermilk gravy and a warm syrup with a great cup of coffee and made my day so much better that it has been lately. The place itself is a quaint beautiful small hole-in-the-wall Diner. Limited parking, if you're in the neighborhood and just enough seeding to be romantically aesthetic personal and casual without being anything else but Charming. Be smart and make sure that you check out when the breakfast and lunch times are. They have a limited times when the exact spot is actually open. I just so happen to get there right before breakfast was about to be over and they're about to close. I personally hate waiting for tables. I often eat alone, so I can take in the ambience and entertainment of the cool decor and art work on the wall, at the time it featured a cool picture of Bruce lee and a naked chick. And I also noticed that they had merchandise for sale with the Demon Lover on it as a T-shirt for thier fame. The place is an overall great service to the community and to my stomach! I've heard a lot about the famous chicken and waffles here, and was extremely excited to go get a chance to try it! It's such a cute restaurant on the corner of Grayson and 7th street in Berkeley, and it has this nice home-y feel to it. I came here with my boyfriend at peak brunch time, and surprisingly didn't have to wait as long as I thought we had to. We both knew what we were ordering once we sat down -- chicken and waffles of course! (Aka the Demon Lover). They have options to add both the syrup and gravy for an extra $2 but I would recommend just sticking to the gravy, you won't regret it! The gravy is to DIE for and pairs so well with the soft buttermilk waffle and chicken. It's creamy and thick and makes for a hearty breakfast. Surprisingly the waffle doesn't get that soggy flavor from all the moisture from the sauces. Although a lil pricey, I would totally come again for this dish. We also each got an iced latte, which was good as well but nothing too special -- just your average ol' latte. Pro tip: The sauces only come on the side if you order both! Otherwise, they traditionally drizzle your choice all across the top of your waffle/chicken. Totally would recommend if you're in the area! read more
