Haven't been to this market in ages!! We used to live down the street from it and it was our go to because it was literally the only Asian market around way back then. Now we live on the other side of town so it takes a bit longer to get here and there are other Asian markets around that are closer and have pretty much the same things. We do, however, have to make another trip soon because they definitely have stuff that the other markets don't! My aunt LOVES crab so of course she had to pick some good looking Dungeness crabs to take home and cook. They used to carry these cups of instant mi goreng years ago and since then, we haven't seen them anymore! We only see the packets now but it would be nice if they still carried the cups for convenience sake like for work or something. They have bags of boba pearls that you can cook/make at home which is pretty neat. Nice selection of snacks and other instant noodles along with various tea. We haven't been to the far right side of the market but they had a Chinese food for take out and not sure if that place still exists. I believe the bakery up front has changed a bit as well since we last went many moons ago. Honestly, it was the first and last. We got a birthday cake for my mom and it was a beautiful tiramisu cake and who knows how long it's been there because it was MOLDY on the bottom and we didn't even know till we sliced it and ate some of it!!! On November 16 around 2:45 pm, after checkout with their cashier Victor, we found that he charged me white radish, $1.29/lbs instead of Chinese Lo Bok, $0.59/lbs, we told another male cashier at the fast checkout, he was not friendly or helpful, also the Victor charged the Orri mandarin $3.49/lbs instead of $2.49/lbs, this male cashier said Victor's scale was wrong, it should weight more, finally he refunded to me reluctantly, but the amount doesn't look right. Some of their products are more pricey than other branches, not to mention this store stinks. Very bad experience, won't go there again read more

Highly recommend this well stocked market. The meat, fish, and poultry sections unbelievably curated. Lots of vegetables to choose from, fruits, mushrooms, etc. Also, an endless array of seasonings, sauces, noodles, rice and spices. Always enjoy visiting the prepared food section for some delicacies. My car got broken into while shopping here. Security guard on staff was completely useless and was super dodgy when asked what he saw. He insisted he was only responsible for inside the store, and only pretended to investigate after I threatened to call the cops. Another employee said this was the third break-in incident this week. If they know this is a trend, why don't they take security more seriously? Who the hell wants to shop here when it's common knowledge that break-ins happen here so regularly. read more

The squid smelled a little spoiled when I bought it but I brought it home and stir fried it anyway with garlic, ginger and lemon. After thoroughly cooking it it still tasted bad, but I ate it anyway. Super rude customer service. Last time I was here I spent $360 and the guy told me I should get rewards membership online so I did and it turns out the online membership doesn't even apply to the store. Then I go to checkout and the kid keeps telling me loudly in front of everyone it's the wrong pin and my card is declined. I immediately called my bank and they had it as fraud as I had not set up my pin yet on my new card. Super rude and embarrassing. A really well kept Asian & International Supermarket... Just as good if not better than Greenland Market in Lake Balboa. I hadn't been in for a while, but they keep this store close to fully stocked and replenish throughout the day. The prepared foods seem to be the most heavily shopped and/or replaced with fresher items. An amazing selection of Sake and lots of fun snacks and treats. I wanted to put a care package together for a friend recently and this place had a lot of her favs. They have amazing options for tofu!!! And pretty good deals on all their items. I spent $15 dollars on about 10 items recently. The customer service is solid. We didn't have to wait in line, but this place can get very busy depending on the time of day. They do have a senior hour and are using great health practices and procedures and do provide sanitizer between customers. Mask required of course! 99 Ranch has a good bakery with some options from 85 Degrees Cafe & Bakery, produce department (everything and then some) and all the essentials as well as a East West Bank and fresh hot deli inside. The parking situation is super spacious and never complete full especially with Office Depot and Chase Bank all in the same plaza/shopping center. read more

This is one of the most-visited Ranch 99 for me due to location and familiarity. It is big enough yet not crazy big, it also has the same stuff other branches have, but for some reason, I end up coming here the most often. The parking lot is not big and usually full when everyone is coming at the same time. This branch also has the widest range of shoppers from my personal experience and that means good in my opinion. Shoppers range from usually Asians, Mexicans, White and Black, occasionally you see eastern Indians as well. The price is actually not that cheap, but it does provide one-stop solution for shoppers from veggies, snacks, live seafood, pork, beef, chicken, ducks and internal organs that only can be seen at Asian supermarkets. It is usually crowded and full of the mixtures of noise from different languages. You can also find some hard-to-find items here such as Japanese snack, Chinese bentos, Taiwanese bread and bakeries that other Asian supermarket don't provide. It is actually fun to visit and carry a lot of stuff home with satisfaction. The other reason I come is that I know I can get Pho and Cantonese food next door before or after I shop. Both restaurants are super busy by Ranch 99's and their own customers. When you smell it, it is just so sexy that you want to stop by and get something to eat with the long line of people. Ranch market is one of my options besides H Mart in terms of Asian supermarket. I try to balance out to save money and get the best of these two since we also earn money the hard way. And it is very clear that we cook and eat at home is the best way to fight against inflation or recession. Things are getting pricier nowadays. That is why I still shop here. read more

A store with an excellent selection of quality products. There's a wide variety of fish and meat. I especially appreciate that they clean and prepare the fish right there. I love fish but hate cleaning it, so I only buy fish at this store. You can also try something new from their sweets selection--sometimes the flavors are unusual but unique. read more

I really love coming here, and have been coming around for the last 10 years or more. The store hasn't changed too much but personally I don't think it needs to. The product you sell is very good. I find the prices to be fair, and the availability to be good. There are certainly things in here I cannot find anywhere else, or not with the variety offered here. I often buy a lot of tofu products, specialty canned products and of course rice. They have good rice brands here, lately they had a sale on "Asian Taste" brand Jasmine rice, 25lbs for $20, and the rice is really good. Often I buy the three ladies brand which they always have in abundance here. The ramen aisle is also spectacular, lots of variety from many Asian backgrounds. The cashiers are the only employees I come in contact with. I'd rate them as friendly and speedy. Even when it's crowded, I don't usually wait super long. There are very few things that bother me about the store. One thing is the registers are too close to the store aisles, so it gets crowded when it's busy. But I understand to change that you'd need a bit of a store redesign to address that. Also the parking lot is really bad. I think it was a couple years ago they repainted the lines, but the spots are too small!! I have a tiny sports car and my car barely fits in the lines, and not everyone who comes to shop here seems to be able to park correctly. My thought first when coming here is always "I hope there's a parking spot to actually park in". The property owners need to overhaul the lot, not just repaint the snug spaces. read more

Was sooooo pleased to find a 99 not to far from home. This location has pretty much everything you need from ingredients to snacks! Surprised how fresh the veggies were and the fresh udon. Stopped by the pre made food area that offers combo trays. It was completely worth it. If you're from Valencia or the valley and need Asian spices they have it all here. Customer service was pretty great and everyone was helpful. Also store was kept pretty clean. For boba they're a ding tea few doors down. read more

Here is my issue. I have been shopping here a long time. The main reason I go to this market it to purchase live crab, lobster, or clams. When you go to the seafood section it is usually very busy . The main reason it is busy and backed up is because they provide a service to fillet, chop, gut, scale and cook your fish. Meanwhile, all I want to do is grab a live crab and go home and cook it. Each customer can take up to 20 minutes with this other service they provide. It's hard to imagine that they don't have one employee just handling live seafood and whole fish with no preparations. As all that has to be done is put them in a bag with a price. Super frustrating. It can take over an hour just to get one live crab for dinner. Please fix this and run a good business read more

The 99 Ranch at Van Nuys is below par. The quality of the store deteriorated through the years since it opened decades ago. Food produce is not fresh, prices are higher than other Chinese stores, employees are unfriendly and the meat department received a B food rating a few times in the past. One of the guys in the fish department has unruly beard and wears a mask covering only his mouth but not the nose. People who work in the food area should be clean shaven without beard or long hair because hair collect dirt and debris. I patronized this store every week mainly for salmon fish heads. One of the services they offered is to cut clean and cut fish for customers. However, the employees in the fish department were not eager to serve me because I usually ordered a few salmon heads that needed to be cleaned and cut. The last time I shopped there, the fish guy had the audacity to chop the salmon heads into pieces instead of halves the way I always ordered. I returned the ruin fish heads and never entered this store again. I found few other grocery stores in the vicinity that sell salmon head at a lower price and with better service. read more

The 99 has nothing to do with prices as 9 is considered a lucky number in Chinese, since it sounds like the word for "long-lasting." Chinese numerology often classifies numbers as auspicious or inauspicious based on the meanings of their homonyms (I've heard that some elevators in China tend to omit the number 4 since it sounds like "death"). It's not a giant store but they have a pretty good selection of products. I really enjoy coming here because I always get to try something totally new (love the snack aisle). The prices are fairly reasonable. They sell alcohol (beer and sake, mostly). Don't come here for American products. They may carry them but you'll likely pay more. For instance, I needed olive oil. It was more expensive (compared to Ralph's or similar), with a reduced selection. I ended up sticking with sesame oil, which was much cheaper, with a lot of choices. The produce section is well-stocked although I saw some beat-up looking fruit in one area. The majority of items were of good quality though. They have an excellent mushroom selection at great prices so I always stock up on enoki, bunapi, oyster, and trumpet mushrooms (these make an amazing scallop substitute for vegans or broke people). Really, my only complaint is the shopping carts and baskets. I stained a pair of pants because of a dirty basket on one prior visit. During another visit, the cart felt really grimy. They do offer spray and paper towels so you can sanitize your carts. Additionally, they could benefit from a cart corral in the parking lot. read more
