So far the work looks great and I would have given this review 5 stars. However, I was quoted $6,500 for the job on Monday, and when the work was finished on Wednesday I was told that the cost of supplies had gone up and it was going to cost another $800. I understand costs going up, but $800 extra seems like a lot, and I wasn't expecting it, which is a hardship on our family. I should have asked what his daily rate was ahead of time and then asked for receipts for the supplies. The workers were super nice, but they left multiple cans and bottles on the ground in my yard. I called A&W to help with a broken water main in the front yard. I had already called multiple plumbers and no one would call me back. The owner Steve answered immediately, was extremely knowledgeably, and was able to schedule a repair quickly. Upon arrival to the house, he found trees planted on top of the water main, and a pressure regulator that should have been replaced in the 1970's. I assumed he would tell me what day he could repair it (since it was a Saturday morning), but to my surprise, he was willing to fix it right then and there! By the end of the day, the main was fixed, water was back on, and the correct water pressure was in the house. At 8:45 he called and said he was at another site and would be another 10 min before he could head out. At 9:30 still didn't show. At 10am I couldn't wait. We've used A&W on a number of projects in our house over the years. Starting with a re-piping after we moved in, a replacement of the main water line and recently a replacement of the main sewer line after we had continuous backups and cabling didn't resolve the issue. Steve and his crew always did a great job. On the recent one they took extra care of the new landscaping, explained all the steps well and cleaned up nicely after a job well done. I also really appreciate that Steve makes us feel truly valued long time customers. He tried to help us out quickly while he had a busy schedule, dealt with permits and inspections smoothly and kept us informed about progress and status. We get prompt responses on text messages or phone calls. Steve has a background with a major water utility company and his experience and network apparently shows in such unplanned jobs as our recent sewer line replacement. Scoured Yelp and Angie's List to find a good plumber/contractor who could help me replace my hot water heater with a tankless system. Came across Steve at A & W Plumbing and I'm so glad that I did! Steve struck me as a really laid back guy with lots of knowledge. I think his years of experience working at San Jose Water before staking out on his own is a huge asset. He was able to swing by on a weekend morning to check out my situation and give me a quote. I shared with him some of the conversations I'd had with other plumbers/contractors and he was pretty straight-up with me in saying that he didn't think I needed this or that. He ultimately ended up saving me over $1000 compared to some of my other options for the tankless unit that I wanted. He was able to schedule the installation for later that same week and do the job pretty quickly. After the install, I noticed that the flow of water wasn't quite what I was expecting and told Steve. He come back out the next day to take a look and resolved what turned out to be a very minor issue in under 10 minutes. I really can't say enough good things about Steve, his knowledge, demeanor, and his very high level of customer service. We have hired Steve a couple times in the past, and he has always done a great job. This time, we called him when we decided to have a water pressure regulator installed on the house. Our pressure was running between 90 and 110 PSI and was causing some "water hammer" sounds in one of our fixtures, so we were pretty sure a regulator would help. Steve did a great job, and it only took him about 90 minutes. And of course, the price was very reasonable. I'm sure we'll call him again the next time we need a plumber. read more

Kitchen sink back up on Mothers Day Morning. We were having people over that night for dinner. Not Good! I went to yelp and found A&W. Every review was 5 stars ( I found out why) Called Steve and 8:30 AM. He was at our house within an hour. He was able to diagnose the problem. Clogged pipe which he snaked out. He also noticed an problem with the slope of our pipe which caused the clog. The price was very fair, and the work was great. I have scheduled him to do additional (non-emergency) work . Sunday morning, I see the ceiling of my living room leaking, I called Steve, he said he's doing a job until 2 and he'll come take a look after that and no primary inspection fees :) He gave me a call to say he was going to be late too, which was very good and uncommon as far as I've seen. He showed up, took a look at it and told us that we can do it ourselves, explained what to get form Home Depot and that it would cost us much less that if he wanted to do it. I contacted a couple people before and after A & W Plumbing. I contacted someone after only for a couple reasons: 1. I offered my landlord three quotes and 2. Steve wasn't going to be able to come look at the water heater until the next day anyway (which was fine - it wasn't an emergency). Of the people I called, he was the only person who asked a couple questions AND said he would stop by to have a look before quoting. Steve was arrived when he promised. Later he was extremely patient with my phone calls (remember I needed a quote for the landlord). I never received the email, but...it all worked out fine. He replaced the water heater quickly and efficiently. He showed me what do do if the pilot light went out and though I asked him how much it would be to empty and refill the water heater the next year - he suggested that it was very simply to do and instructed me on how to do that as well. Oh yes, very important: the price was extremely fair. I hope I don't need another water heater in the near future, but if I did, I wouldn't hesitate to contact A & W Plumbing again. read more

My husband called A&W after another plumbing company's idea of arriving in "15 minutes" lasted 2 hours. We were in a bind. After three days of no drainage due to clogged pipes (preschooler found a stash of wet wipes) we were tired of using the neighbors house 24/7 for our personal needs and had no confidence that plumbers could fix this issue. Responsive and professional I called A&W last Friday and got Steve. He couldn't come that day but said he'd be able to come on Sunday am for my two issues: disposal leaking and a safety concern re the hot water heater. He confirmed the appt and was right on time. We was well groomed and professional. He took one look at my water heater and got very serious. It wasa about a year old and it seems it was installed improperly. The top was not sealed at all which meant that carbon monoxide had been emitting into our home instead of being vented to the outside to dissipate. He explained that we were lucky to be alive. The handyman, who installed the water heater only a year ago mentioned there was a safety issue he needed to take care of, He vaguely explained what it was and then put some towels on top of the heater to soak up any leaks (??) He told me if I ever saw water in the pan to let him know right away. Steve further explained that were extremely lucky that our house did not catch on fire as the rags has char marks on the from the carbon moxitde causing sparks. He said the hot water heater was so dangerous that it had to be fixed first, and had to be fixed that day. I felt very comfortable that Steve knew exactly what he was doing. He took care of both issues in about two hours including going to the store for parts. His years of experience show. It wasn't the cheapest job but what a great lesson I learned in being penny wise and pound foolish. I couldn't have written that check fast enough and was so grateful that my kids and I live to tell our lesson. Look no further! My circa 1970 home finally blew the main line to the street. A&W came with in 24 hr. to get our water up and running (it was 9pm when our line broke). Yeay, water! With the major work that needed to be done, (cutting hedges and all) a sprinkler was broken..... and a few 1970 issue's arose. Fast forward to the fixing.... They came the day I told them of the issues to fix the sprinkler, which was bound to happen... but not only that, the 4:30 appt where other issues were found are still being fixed, (8pm! No one stays, is he super man?) Glen did not leave to go home, he stayed to finish the job. A Home Depot run, 2 faucet's fixed as well as the sprinkler line. Many avenues were taken before doing any extra work for cost savings where necessary. I would promote A&W to anyone that asks for MAJOR or MINOR work. On time, curtious and very fair. We'd been having some toilet backups, and water coming up through our shower. I called Steve on a Saturday, after tying a few other local plumbers, and he told me he'd call back as soon as he was done with his current job. He was true to word, and stopped by shortly after. He and his partner snaked out our rear clean out pipe (heh), then another cleanup pipe where the problem actually existed. They snaked it 3 or 4 times, changing the heads on the snake to chew threw the roots that had apparently gnawed through beyond our property line. Very thorough work! Steve left us with some good advice to put in another clean out pipe at the property line, so that when this happens next time, the city will have to come and fix the piping in the street where the roots have taken residence. Otherwise the cost would be on us, and likely run 5-10x as high as just putting in the clean out. Good, ethical guys, true to their word and thorough. I'll be calling them again to do the recommended work. read more

I was in Mexico when I received a call from my roommate telling me our kitchen was flooded and the sink was leaking. I immediately panicked because I was in party mode and hungover and drunk at the same time PLUS thousands of miles from home. I called A&W (8 AM on a Saturday morning) and Steve answered right away. Had complete sewage blockage at the weekend. Called Roto Rooter who came out and completely failed to make any impression on the problem, then left with their money! Called Steve at A&W, who was on another job, but took a few minutes to come and see what our issue was. Steve made some suggestions as to how the problem could be addressed, and said he would try to get back next day (Sunday), as he was on another job. Steve came Sunday and tried various options until he found one that would provide at least a temporary fix. It worked! We had a functional sewer line in about 1-hour. Steve said if he couldn't clear the blockage, he wouldn't charge - now that's customer service! There is more work to do for a permanent fix, but A&W is now our preferred plumber going forward!
