I love A&W, but this location is consistently bad! The interior is always messy, but the worst part is passing by the full sacks of garbage outside either door. I took a (fuzzy) picture of it last time I went, reported it to the staff ("Yeah, it's fine, we know.") and wrote a letter to corporate. No one cared. Horrible. I used to stop here for years on the way home from the mountains. Food was cold and horrible. Burger was dry and cold. And the worst is my husband and I became ill after eating there, so assuming we got a good dose of bacteria from the food. Flies were everywhere inside. We have been going here after camping for at least 8 years. Before now it has always had meh service, food etc but its A and W so we put up with it. I am not sure if they are under new managament but today's visit was and A+++++++++++!!! Such great customer service. Anything we needed they saw too it! I agree with these previous reviews -- this is a good place to stop while trekking down the mountain from Big Bear, but do expect it to be crowded (if it's a weekend) and a bit messy. Food was fine though over priced, but bathrooms even had soap in them! Stopped in for lunch with my wife and my dog so we sat outside. I went in to order our food and they were very nice and even asked if I was a veteran and gave us a discount. Also thanked me for my service. Made sure our order was brought to us outside. Even followed up to see we enjoyed lunch. If other places ran their business like this. If you want to wait 40 minutes in line for a melted float this is the place for you. They also substitute the regular with a small occasionally and hope that you don't notice. When in the drive thru, make sure to keep the window attendant nearby when checking your order because if there's something wrong/missing they won't be back for about 10 minutes. The root beer floats are the only reason I still come here. I grew up in Mentone and this place is exactly as it was 20+ years ago. Dining out choices are limited here-either eat at home or drive to Yucaipa or Redlands. If you are familiar with Mentone, well this is what you'd expect to find in this area. The McDonald's down the street isn't much better. I give it three stars because surely the owners can update this place. The food isn't that great and if you want better food, head over to Barnacles bar behind the A & W. It's not great but it's way better than what you will get here! read more

Been going to A&W since before I could remember! My first day of school, my Mom said I could choose ANYWHERE I wanted to go and I chose the A&W in Ontario CA, and back then the waitresses wore roller skates and the trays were hooked to your car window ... such wonderful memories. Now, it seems so many of these 'car-hop' style restaurants are becoming a thing of the past. Of course it is not helped by the fact that people have missed the idea that the employees are few and the restaurants often 'untidy' because MOM & POP businesses often run on a tight budget -- guest could help out by bussing their own tables and wiping up spills so it does NOT attract bugs... also, I laugh when I look at the photos some post on here REAL BUGS! Yep, restaurants have food, food falls, no matter how much you clean BUGS come! I worked in a place where we covered most everything and smoke bombed the entire place - all you do is poison the guests with the settled carcinogenic dust on everything. Corporate restaurants, hire EXTRA staff, they clean and wipe everything, they smoke bomb everything, and because they buy in MEGA-Bulk you save pennies, for way poorer quality. It is a shame, as the small business owners can hardly get by, and idiots post thoughtless reviews. Here is my take: I stopped by today, the food was slightly more costly then I recall, however, there was an EXCUSE OUR DUST sign near the door, as they are upgrading the store! The staff was smiling, friendly, and on top of it! I misordered a root beer float (intended to get diet root beer) and manager fixed it immediately, even though it was my mistake! The coney dogs are just as I recall from my childhood! Please open more stores in the Ontario area! I will visit every week! Thank you for the delicious food and EXCELLENT service! If you are headed up the 38, stop in for a milkshake or rootbeer float. I cannot review the food, but shakes and floats are good and quick! We went inside because there was a long line at the drive thru and were astonished at how quickly we were served. Terrible service. We stood at the register for a good 5 minutes before our order was taken (not busy inside at all). When our order finally was taken, it was another 10 minutes before we got some of our food with no acknowledgement that more was coming. I stood at the counter for another 10 minutes waiting for any acknowledgement at all. I finally had to stand at the register and act as if I was ordering something to get the attention of an employee. When I asked about my 2 missing items she gave me a blank stare, asked what was missing and proceeded to slide a not even full root beer freeze across the counter and tell me they were getting the burger on the grill. Due to the fact that at this point (now a good 20 minutes later)my entire family had already eaten and the rest of my food was cold, I asked to cancel the missing burger. again with the blank stare. another employee had to come open the register to give me cash back. I told them as nicely as possible that it was ridiculous that they left off not 1 but 2 items and that it should take 20+ minutes to make a burger when the restaurant was empty and didn't even receive an apology. both employees just turned their back and walked away. We stop by the remodeled AW Rootbeer for a quick treat today before Lent. It was a horrible disappointment. The building is looking better under the new ownership. (We watched the owner take money from the registers to pay the stucco guy after listening to him try to negotiate the amount down while we ordered our food.) I ordered a large Rootbeer for almost $3. The whole reason they exist. It was disgusting. It was so watered downed you could barely taste that it was Rootbeer. The former owners may not have kept the cleanest restaurant but the Rootbeer they mixed each day was out of this world. The new owners should not try to cheap out on the Rootbeer they mix or their new investment will be for not. I probably will not return anytime soon. read more

They only had 2 customers waiting for their order and I was the only one waiting to place an order, yet all the employees were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I was not even acknowledged. If their food is as bad as their service, then I'm glad they ignored me. I left that place and am now enjoying a Root Beer float from Dairy Queen which was serve to me with a hello, a smile, and within 5 minutes. I love going here with my friends and get root beers floats. I enjoy the customer service and great food. I recommend going with family and recently got a new management with people that want to do the right time and make it better. For at least a month now they change how they make food to move fresh and better tasting. So don't listen to all the old comments or reviews because are Improving on the bad thing and got anything best then what it use to do like. If I could just give 0 stars I would have. Worst service. Our order was forgotten and they have skipped 10 numbers and we're still not being called we we're only ordering root beer floats and cheese curds and it felt like we have waited for an hour. One of the cashier was really rude and was really giving us attitude, my daughter was asking about the location of the restroom but she was rudely interrupted and told her to close the door when she walks out. A fellow customer was the one who told her the directions. The place was really filthy and flies was everywhere, tables were sticky and the dispenser nozzles for the condiments looks like it wasn't wiped for months which makes this a whole new level of dirtiness. Another problem is when you buy an A&W mug we thought we were getting a new out of the box mug but they just fished out a mug from the sink wiped it down and wrapped it their paper bag. We were out riding on the bikes & noticed an A & W Root Beer burger shop in Mentone. The staff was delightfully polite & they played a good variety of ' to the hop' songs as well as modern stuff. I have got to tell you that I was shocked at how clean the place was & that is usually an indication as to the cleanliness of the kitchen. I had the cheapest thing on the menu- the chicken strips & changed the FFs to onion rings. Well, they screwed up & gave me the french fries & I am here to tell you that they were WAY better than Mickey D's. I was so surprised that I told them to never mind the ORs but they insisted on giving me those as well to fix their error & THEY are pretty great as well. Shall we talk about the chicken strips!?!... I have never had any that were NOT burned dark brown & dry before. These were slightly crisp & moist & the dips were not all vinegary. The honey mustard had just the right bite & you can bet that we will be going back there at lease 2- 3 times a month only because I do not want to get burned out on such a great place to eat. I highly advise the lovely road trip up to the tiny "Mentone Beach" if for nothing else, for that root beer float! I bet dollars to donuts that you will be happy! Oct. 4, Saturday...always look forward to a good old fashion hamburger, but today's order was Extreme;y Salty and the root beer float was flat...had to throw it all away...this is unusual because the food is really very good otherwise...please look into what is going on in the kitchen!!!! I was coming through Mentone and saw an A&W. I thought I am hungry so I went through the Drive Through. I ordered a bacon cheese burger with fries and an ice tea. It was over $8.41 which I felt was a lot but oh well. I received the order and left. I live 10 minutes away so I decided to munch on the fries and eat the burger when I got home. The fries were cold, very cold like they had been made hours before and no heat lamp. The ice tea was kiddie size. When I got home I found the burger to be so dry I couldn't eat it. My advice, if you have $10.oo you don't need just drive by A&W and toss it out the window because the food you get will go in the trash anyway. read more

One of the worst restaurants I have observed. Family and friends came in from out of town and I was ashamed. Flies everywhere inside and out. Broken seating and a B department of health rating.
