Fries were hard and cold. My hamburger didn't even look good and the bun was also hard. I won't go back there.

Happy to see the remodel finished. I have lived in the area, within walking distance to the A&W for the past 30 years but had stopped going there due to the way "things used to be." The place is clean and neat, employees friendly and attentive. Food is good. Can't say it's amazing as I have seen reported via Facebook since the location has reopened but good, above average. People have said prices have gone way up. Well, a burger, fries, and drink will set you back around $10. That is "about" what it cost today at other places. Maybe it's a little high, but I know that the price is not a deal breaker for me. I believe the burgers are made to order as it took a little while (nothing exorbitant in terms of the wait) to get them ready and definitely they were not simply taken off a heat lamp and given to us. Big plus there. Why not a 5-Star rating? Well, my criticism is as follows: - Disappointed the location has not brought back their famous frosty-cold mugs. I know the previous management stopped using them as I was told they were stolen too often. I don't know if that is the case, but growing up across the States, being the son of active duty military airman everywhere served their floats and root beer in an ice-cold frosty mug. I ate at the Corona location a few years ago and they had the glass ice-cold mugs there. Sure miss them. - First attempt at going to the location after the remodel I checked Google to see what time they closed. The time says 12:00 a.m. I knew pre-remodel they closed much earlier -- I thought, Great they have extended their hours; let's make a late-night run to the new A&W. We showed up around 10:10 and were told by the staff who were closing down the restaurant that they were closed... I told them, Okay, but someone should update Google as it shows it is opened until midnight. Two weeks later the hours still show opened until 12:00 a.m. - Final thought. When I dine out at a sit-down restaurant I always tip generously. I know the servers work extremely hard and do not even receive minimum wage and their expected income includes the tip they receive from waiting tables. They bring me my food. The fill my beverage. They verify everything is to my expectation. They are pleasant and professional and for that service, I will normally leave a 20% to 25% tip. When I pull through a drive-through window and see a paper cup left outside the window or on the counter where I pick up my order with "tips" scribbled on the side of the cup I feel like I am at a freeway off-ramp with some dude holding a cardboard sign begging for money. I should not feel that way when I am in a fast food restaurant. At a fast food restaurant I order at a counter, typically go back to the counter when my order is called out, go back to the counter if I need a drink refill, walk up to the condiment bar to get napkins, utensils, ketchup or mustard, etc. Do you get my drift? I get that the employees who work at these places do not make great money. My first job was at Arby's and I got paid (now you are going to know how old I am) $1.85 per hour. I understand that even today with wages much higher than $1.85 the money does not go far. That is why there is something called college, or trade school where these individuals can go to prepare themselves to earn a living wage. Please don't attempt to close the minimum wage and living wage gap by begging for money. If it's not adequate, get some education and move on. There are always people entering the workforce, or others who only need to only supplement their income and these types of jobs fill that need. Put down your cardboard sign. Management, do you really want to condone this behavior from your employees? Just my thoughts. I have been to the restaurant three times since the remodel so this review is not based solely on one visit. I see great potential and know the new management has dropped some serious money into this location and I am rooting for them and hope they are very successful. I would love to modify my rating, and will,if I see improvement. read more

I love this place for the Rootbeer floats! They still serve the rootbeer on tap and it is so darn good! The waits are long and the building is very old and kinda alittle rough around the edges so dont expect much.. One of the best burgers I have ever ate, never take a bite without eating the melted cheese on the cheese paper though. To bad they are becoming extinct in California, can't find them anymore. Okay this place is disgusting. I'm not kidding there was at least 6 flies flying around. The entire place was just dirty and gross. The cashier rushed us completely, the second we walked she's was like " are you ready to order?!" And we didn't really have time to even think. The food was whatever, nothing great. I love the draft A&W root beer, especially in a frosty glass mug. Most places only have soda in the fountain dispenser, but draft is so much better. Mentone A&W is the only place I found that still has the draft root beer. The three A&W's in San Bernardino closed over 30 years ago. The Yucaipa A&W closed about 5 years ago. The Cabazon A&W closed about 1 year ago. Most A&W's now are part of another store (like KFC) and do not serve the draft root beer but do have A&W root beer as a fountain drink. You might be able to get a root beer float but not a freeze (a stirred up float and a freeze is much better). When I tried to buy a freeze at a KFC A&W, they told me to just stir up the float. It's just not the same. I do agree with others that the place is falling down. All of the dining area was added on decades ago and could have been done better. If you go there, just picture how the employee area is what used to be inside, and all of the dinning area was outside. read more

Not like I remembered, I've had some great floats at A&W's but this one one was nothing to write home about. So I ordered the $5 meal and asked for the meat on the side of the cheeseburger, the gentleman who took my order giggled over the intercom in the drive thru. I pull up and he tells me my order is $10, he thought I ordered two drinks, besides the one that came in the $5 meal. I rechecked that the cheeseburger had no meat and server looked at me like I was crazy. He then said I never told him no meat or the meat on the side. So two workers came to the window and both looked confused, the server handed me The cheeseburger with meat and when I asked one with no meat he still looked confused. Since they made two drinks he gave me an extra. So I left with two drinks and one cheeseburger with meat. The cheeseburger and extra drink went to someone at my house and my dinner was a root-beer float. This is the second time with poor service. Its great to see this unit of Allen & Wright Burgers is still open. I've moved back up to Canada where A&W are plentiful, but I enjoyed the one there in Mentone when I lived up the hill and after I had moved to Orange County would stop in after a hike in the area. A&W is a super AWesome restaurant that makes their customers feel welcomed.The food is incredibly fresh and delicious, the empolyees are very kind and friendly, and the owners are on top of their game! It's especially ideal on a friday night, the music sets a vibe and it makes the enviornment super fun. This place is down right dirty. My fiancé and I went to get dinner and I was disgusted by how filthy the inside was. There were flies EVERYWHERE and root beer floats spilled on the floor. We ordered and ended up getting our food to go and eat in our car because it was so dirty inside. When we got our food my burger was wrong, went back inside to have them remake it, and there is a man sitting inside with a beer can in his hand and no one said a word to him. The cooks don't use any gloves as well as the ladies working in the front. The food was okay but nothing special. Not so sure we will be back. read more

Aaaaaaw! Remember these? "A&W Root Beer has that frosty mug taste!" That's what I think to myself every time I drive by this place on the way to our cabin in Big Bear. And, every once in a while, I give in to the nostalgia and stop in. Awwwwwww...ful! (One L) It's such a disappointment! Every time! The last trip, we were the only ones there. The adolescents running the place were each distracted in different and unprofessional ways. They seemed bothered to have customers. It wasn't a comfortable experience at all. The root beer in the "frosty" mug was warm. WARM! Not frosty!! And the food was cold...which seemed impossible since we were the only customers in the place! And to make it even worse, the place was just unclean throughout. On a positive note, we were treated to one side of a cell phone conversation in which an proudly promiscuous adolescent female employee engaged in a loud and enthusiastic conversation, presumably with an equally adventurous girlfriend, about her recent...activities. While I should give an extra star for the sheer entertainment value of what we heard, I have to take it away for the laxative-like effect the cold food and warm root beer had on me. And, again, the root beer was warm. And it was a furnace outside. Remember the good ol' days of A&W Root Beer? Good. Keep it that way. Avoid this place. Don't spoil the memories. Came here for the first time. I've been told there are not too many of these left around so stopped by and had a bacon cheese burger. Was pretty average nothing too crazy.. I don't think I'll be coming out of my way to eat here again though. Maybe if I lived like..., across the street, hahaha. read more

We stopped by this A&W on the way home from Big Bear. We went though the drive through and it was so slow that I was able to jump out of the car and run over and use there ghetto ass dirty outdoor bathroom. When I got back to the car the line hadn't even moved one bit. When we finally got our food it was ok. Nothing special. Just typical fast food food. read more

Inside looks great after the remodel. It is disappointing that the rootbeer tap is nothing more than a fountain machine, or also tasted off. My food took about 15 minutes I ordered a bacon double cheeseburger combo. I ordered my food for dine-in, it was given to me in a to-go bag and without my fries and not so much as a "sorry for the wait" then when I asked about my fries the dark haired girl in the gray shirt didn't even respond even after what I assume was the manager said "you didn't give him is fries" she slowly turned around and handed them to me without a word. Worst yet the manager didn't say a word! The kitchen looks lost, there are a couple girls who seem to know what to do, but when no one else does their job it's tough I feel bad for those two. Gawd, what a little care could do for this place! But no one on the inside seems to want this place to succeed. 1) Cold, dry patty with warm lettuce - everything one bland temperature. I don't care if the franchise ingredients aren't the best, you can put a freshly cooked, hot patty together with cold veg on a bun and make it taste 1000% better than the room-temperature mess that comes from here. 2) Cleanliness. It matters in a restaurant. If you "let things go" then your customers will pick up on it and immediately and subconsciously presume that you've let everything else go, as well. In some "shack" restaurants, when the food is superb, their impressions are over-ridden. When your food matches their presumptions, the overall impression is worse than either one thing alone. 3) Staff. Times I have been there, it's as though there was no managerial oversight, or the staff were simply echoing some lack of any commitment from management. Either way, it was bad. Maintaining the highest quality of preparation and service within the ingredient restrictions mandated by the franchise agreement, providing a clean, efficient image to your customers, and assuring that staff project that image in all ways and at all times. It's how McDonalds has sold generally mediocre food for decades. No one cares in this place - that's painfully obvious from its appearance to the ordering experience to the taste of the food. That frustrates me to no end because I think of all the money someone invested and how it's all got to be circling the drain. I (or anyone with a decent work ethic and any experience in retail) could increase the quality of food and forward image of this place in almost no time with some work, some attention, and even the slightest bit of passion for the job. It's. So. Sad. But it's also a choice so I won't lose any sleep over it. For years, this place has been going downhill, as if it's owned by someone who doesn't give a crap about anything but numbers and pays no attention to image, quality, staff, or reputation. Every local knows to stay away, and this place just keeps on rolling from its own momentum. Someone should put the slightest effort into turning it around, hire someone to do it for them, or shutter the place and put it out of its misery. Years ago, this place was decent, and if anyone gave two craps about it, it could be again. But it's painfully obvious that no one in any position of authority does give two craps, and because of that -- STAY AWAY AND LET THIS PLACE DIE ALREADY. Floors were nasty , and the place was over ran by flies..my chili cheese fries, mini corns and my sm.fries were all cold.I brought it up to the manager at the time , and she didn't even of so much apologize. Last original A&W left in Southern California. Been stopping here for decades any time we come out of Big Bear the back way on Hwy 38. New owners as of two months ago. Best A & W I ever been to. Even though this joint is run down and a little dated. But that's its charm. I go every time I head to bear and also stop on the way back to get me a gallon of that liquid love A & W root beer. I stop by every now and then to eat as well. The food is ok but I like seeing the 7 foot female cook who has to completely duck under the menu board to come out to the counter. But last I checked she was gone. Anyways stop by and grab a gallon.
