Sometimes you have to go old-school and get an A & W Root Beer (now A & W Restaurant). Growing up I had very fond memories of Root Beer floats at these restaurants (sometimes more like soda stand versus a restaurant - but it was another era ....). Today it was hot, and the Root Beer Sassafras flavor was calling me. So I had a Root Beer Cream Freeze. Their saying is that it "Sips like a shake. Tastes like a float." That's basically true - I think it's more vanilla ice cream than Root Beer, but still has the flavor without the carbonation. It didn't miss the mark - it's quite refreshing. Not to leave well enough alone, I had the Coney Cheese Dog. You'll need the container or the fork to eat this. The bun didn't hold up very well with the chili and cheese sauce. The cheese sauce was a disappointment - marginal flavoring. The chili was better than expected but a bit salty. But the hot dog, by itself, was fairly decent - too bad it was masked by all the other flavors. Its casing had a nice snap to each bite, and the dog had the distinctive beefy, rich flavor. To shave a few calories, you can still get that Root Beer flavor with the ice cream mixes by requesting diet Root Beer. read more

Had lunch here today and really enjoyed it. The food was very good, a bit on the pricey side, but not unreasonable. Great memories, when I found the A&W rest i was so excited. This location has a drive thu, and has a bigger menu than just the great ' ROOTBEER FLOAT! . The food is super great and you can buy A&W drinking glasses. There is also a mini stuff animals of the A&W Bear i got 4 . The service was fast you can also eat inside or out in the patio. It's not incredibly big but great for a group . This restaurant is on a corner and in a nice area not alot of car traffic . This is the closest A&W from the Los Angeles area. If you are a root beer lover, definitely make a stop here! It's so much better fresh from the tap than fast food soda fountains or cans/bottles sold in stores. There's plenty of parking and the staff are friendly. Perfect place to stop by during a long drive and the summer. I did not have any food here as I was not hungry, maybe next time. I had a refill before I left the store to drink for later and it was still really good after hours sitting without the fridge. We just stopped by here on our way home from Oak Glen, and the service here was amazing! John and the whole team were incredibly kind and accommodating with us while this place was packed. We ordered a diet float and a regular one, and they couldn't remember which one was the diet so they let us keep the original and remade a float for us and upsized it without us even asking for it! The rest of the food came out perfectly. John and the other team members handled this rush of people with such kindness and paid great attention to every customer. AGES ago I went to an A&W in NorCal (Fremont location to be exact) and I was hard pressed to find any in SoCal, the closest one being at this location, almost an hour away from me. Suffice to say, glad that I was in the area to go here! Came here on a Sunday evening and the dining area had a couple other guests, but parking was plentiful. I have to say, service was A+. Hands down some of the best service I've ever gotten at a fast food restaurant. Staff made sure to clarify our order, make recommendations, and was even nice enough to bring out all our food to us, to our table! When we needed root beer refills, they did so very quickly and gave us new cups each time (very COVID safe!). We got the: 1) Coney Dog: -They did not skip out on the chili or onions. -Not bad! 2) 10 Piece Corn Dog Nuggets: -The yumminess of a corn dog in snackable bites. Goes great with the Papa Sauce. 3) Cheeseburger: -Good solid cheeseburgers, no complaints. 4) Cheese Curds: -It's like mini mozzarella sticks! Can't go wrong with these. Not too salty or oily either. 5) Root Beer Float: -No charge for root beer refills and you can get diet root beer too! -We got a generous amount of vanilla ice cream, so there was no issue keeping the creamy flavor after several refills. For dipping sauces, we were able to choose the Papa Sauce with no extra charge and got some honey mustard too. The honey mustard was a bit on the sweet side, but the Papa Sauce had a slight kick to it. Good stuff! My family and I were on our way to Forrest Falls to see snow and decided to stop by at an A&W. This was my first time going to A&W and like their Root Beer. I remember growing up that that there were a lot of A&W around. Now, there are not many to visit. This A&W is located on Menitone Drive and they have a good thing: Drive Thru. In my opinion, their parking lot is small depending on time of day, so plan accordingly. We get there and we were welcomed by the friendly staff. Inside the restaurant, it felt nostalgic in that there was Orange and Brown everywhere. I saw that the A&W was on tap and you can request a glass cup with your order. Glass Cup can be purchased separately if you wish. What was really cool was that the root beer on tap tasted better, in my opinion and the carbonation was made it delicious. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger Combo w/ Root Beer on Tap. The burger comes with: 100% U.S. Beef and hickory-smoked bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles. I really enjoyed the flavor of the patty with the seasoning they put, as well as the ingredients were fresh. The fries were great and the seasoning that was included. In my personal opinion, my family and I would definitely come back, if and when we are in the area again. I really enjoyed the Root Bear tap and overall experience was great. In my personal opinion, I would recommend A&W if you want to try a Fast Food place that has good burgers and if you are a fan of their famous Root Beer. This A&W is a great spot to get some late-night food and floats/freezes. Since the "recent" change in management and staff, the food quality is night-and-day better than it was years ago. I would normally avoid ordering food and only get a float, but now when i visit, the float is basically just the desert. I typically order the Papa Burger, which would translate to a Double Double if are comparing to In-N-Out. It would be difficult for me to choose what burger I like better, which is even surprisingly for myself considering I am a HUGE fan of In-N-Out. The staff is always very friendly and quick with getting the food and drinks out. The indoor seating is a mixture of retro and restaurant-chain styling, so nothing that stands out. If you're in the area or leaving Big Bear, it's worth the stop. read more

It's pretty shabby compared to a lot of other fast food places. All the windows are noticeably dirty including the window door you come in. There's holes in the booth seats, holes in the wall , broken Root beer Machine ( it's A&W, shouldn't that be working) and just kind of dingy and left behind looking . But Not in a retro way. That's the way I would like it, more retro. Hire a carhop for the weekends, Jazz it up out front so it's more noticeable. Make it more inviting. Slowest drive thru ever! There were only a few cars ahead of me and waited over 30 minutes.

So we went through the drive through. We ordered 2 cheese burger with fries and 2 route beer flotas regular side. We were the told the price. Late review that was saved in drafts but the reason we no longer go here. We've made this place a family outing anytime we go with extended family to Oak Glen, pumpkin patch, or big bear. the kids look forward to stopping for a kids meal and ice cream. For years and years the meal has come with ice cream as the prize. Today we were informed that although we are paying the same price for kids meals they don't come with them because the health department said they couldn't staple the coupons to the bag so they stopped ordering the coupons and they couldn't give us ice cream without the coupon and even though the menu board said the meal came with a special prize, we were told the board "hadn't been updated in 2 years" (But we've come in the last few months) and we didn't get the prize, a discount, or ice cream. After speaking with management & I believe owner about my frustration and their not willing to honor their menu and losing customers due to the terrible customer service, his response was "it happens". read more

Rajj helped me with my late night order, everything was hot and fresh and he was very kind and even allowed for a refill after I waited (the soda foam caused the cup to only be 80% full when I got it). The soft serve ice cream didn't taste like soft serve. The creamiest wasn't there. It tasted like ice milk. It was very disappointing. It'll be a while before I return. Service was the same. I grew up on A&W back when you could buy a half gallon of the root beer. Anyway I was in Palm Springs and was heading back on the 10 so I decided to stop. I think this is the only location in southern California but I could be wrong about that. I haven't been to an A&W in over 10 years so I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I get there and the drive thru line is almost out to the street!!! Oh and it was straight up blazing hot outside!!! I was in line for at least 15 to 20 minutes. I order my root beer float and it really didn't taste like what I remembered. I was a little disappointed but oh well. I think it was the root beer that tasted off or something. I haven't been to an A&W in Ages! So, I know I love their root beer floats, but I've never eaten a hamburger from here. I ordered a deluxe hamburger in the drive thru, I Always ask for extra onions & pickles. OMG they did NOT disappoint! I love that their lettuce is shredded. Everything was super fresh! It was 2:30 when I went into the drive thru and no one even responded for 5 minutes when we were saying hello and it said they closed at 3. When we went to finally get our order we asked for a burger and they said only drinks so we first thought that's crazy no food but you can at least do a freeze considering they don't close til 3. Then the man said only soft drinks were closing soon. Why even stay "open" til 3 if you're not gonna be serving people until you're closing time Horrible service, lazy workers and what used to be a good place to eat is now a crap service and you can't even go before they close by 30 minutes cause they won't sell you anything and as a business you're supposed to cook and serve til you're closed that's what I had to do when I worked fast food it's unbelievable that there even still open can't even enjoy anything. First and foremost, take the root beer off the tap and not from the fountain. It is much much colder and smoother and some of the best root beer you'll get. Use that cold root beer to wash down a nice cheesy burger or any other of their selections, including the shrimp basket or chicken sandwich. They also have a pretty good bacon burger. They also have selections of fries, onion rings, and their famous cheese curds. This is an older establishment and I have memories of going here anytime we went up to the mountains because it's right on the 330 highway. This is the last old school A&W in So Cal. The experience of pouring your own root beer out of a tapped keg is awesome. When you eat in you get frosted mugs! The fresh A&W root beer will tell you that you have never ever had true root beer b4 now. I am a big fan of small batch soda brands which can be delicious. The difference is in the fresh draft taste. Been here twice. First time just got a root beer float as they were about to close. Wait staff were nice. The second time was in October 2023 and we sat down and ate inside. We ordered two double mushroom melts, fried cheese curds, corn dog nuggets and a root beer float. Food and service was good. I like that you can refill your root beer from the tap. read more
