There are not a lot of A&Ws left in California. This one in Mentone is very tasty. Because of Covid, you can't dine in, but there is a drive thru and delivery and pick up. The service is very friendly and they got my order right the first time. They prepare their root beer there so it is so great, much better than any can you will get. We love the root beer floats. They can be a tad pricey but worth it since you aren't going to get to A&W everyday. The place is clean. They have these little mini corn dogs that are great, and all of their burgers are fantastic. When they re open, dine in, the root beet refills are free. Have a great time in this adorable town. read more

Very disappointed in this visit to A & W. Order was messed up to start with. Ordered 2 glass A&W glass mugs to take home. But couldn't get them because of Covid regulations. Cashier didn't charge us so I guess it didn't matter, at least that was the impression that was shown. Requested no onion on the burger and it was packed. No sauce was given for chicken strips, onion rings or chicken sliders. No plastic ware to eat chili cheese fries with. Bill came to over $50.00, could have gotten much more much closer to home for much less. The nostalgia and memories have definitely lost their luster thanks to this visit. Only good point was the one young man who did give me ranch dressing for the chicken tenders. He was polite and helpful and apologized for it not being in the bag. I was surprised to still see one in Southern California still open. I thought most of them closed up domestically. I still see one or two when I travel abroad. Not sure why this place is located where it is but I drove out here when I was nearby for the nostalgia at eating at one. I ordered a burger combo and a hotdog. The hotdog was ok, nothing special. The burger was good and very old school. I like old school burgers with a plain bun, the usual condiments like tomato's and pickles, and a beef patty or two. The decor inside was pretty cool with old school A&W items like lunch boxes for sale. Their is a patio outside to sit and eat. They have a drive thru and a decent sized parking lot. Not a bad place to stop into on your way up the 38 through Mentone, toward the mountains. And, you MUST try the A&W root beer that they have on draft! Yup, draft, not through a fountain machine. Food is the way it's always been. Do not go in the drive thru if they are busy, they just forget about the drive thru. It took 46 minutes in the drive thru, and there were only 4 cars in front of me, that's unheard of! It's not an isolated issue. If they are busy then just go inside. Found this location close to my work and was excited to get my root beer fix and lunch. I was looking forward to having the fried cheese curds. The root beer did not disappoint but the cheese curds were mostly greasy clumps of breading. The burger was stale with decomposing wilted lettuce. In addition to the very long wait at the drive thru, I couldn't even eat the food which is rare for me. I wasted my entire lunch break for root beer and horrific food quality. A&W I remember stopping at this location coming down from the mountains when I was a little kid. With that nostalgia, I started taking my kids when we came to visit as my home was being built close to this location. The food was OK but they had a five dollar deal with a burger and root beer float, so I figured that was an acceptable value. I got it for the float! After moving into our new home I came to this location a couple more times, and the last time they had gotten rid of their five dollar deal. The cheapest meal was almost $10 and that did not include a root beer float, only a soda option. Well, I got the expensive meal and I requested fresh fries and when I pulled out of the drive-through realized that, after a very lengthy wait, I got nasty old fries. I took the food home to my wife and returned to the location to request replacement fries at which time they argued with me! These fools even lied and told me that they watched fresh fries being put into my bag the first trip, which really upset me. Then the supervisor wound up treating me incredibly poorly and basically argued with me about how wrong I was. She lied to me and then made me wait nearly 15 minutes for a single order of replacement fries. I went to the website and filed a negative review for customer feedback and was never contacted. I contacted them again and was also ignored for a second time. I will never return. As if the low quality food or the excessive pricing wasn't bad enough, the customer service is reprehensible and I refuse to support them with a single dollar of mine. read more

Avoid this place at all costs, you would be better off going to the McDonald's down the street. I came here with high hopes and immediately upon entering the building, I was greeted with a filthy disorganized environment, the food we ordered was dry and hard and all around unappetizing. When I ordered we were told we could keep the mug that came with the order and paid extra for it. When we left the building and took the mug we paid for with us, one of the employees started screaming at us through the drive through window as we were getting into our car, that we were "stealing" the mug and ran out to us proclaiming that we were not allowed to take the mug. After explaining to him that we paid for the mug and the cashier who rang us up told us we could keep it upon ordering, he said that wasn't true and violently wrenched the mug out of my wife's hand through the car window, bending her wrist backwards. Better than In-and-Out. Unlike may fast food places today A&W still cooks your food to order, meaning it has not been sitting in a warmer for hours. You can taste the difference and in my opinion there Papa burger is the best around. You might have to wait a little longer to get your food but it's worth the wait. read more

Stopped by this location on the way back down from Big Bear because I haven't seen one of these in so long. I got the double cheeseburger "papa burger" and it was very good. Very juicy, fresh toppings and a good amount of sauce. We also got some of the cheese curds and they were fantastic! Basically mini bite sized mozzarella sticks. To top it all off I got the A&W root beer float. Overall is was pretty good, but I think the soda might have been a little flat? The outside doesn't look like much, but the nostalgia factor kicked in and I was pleasantly surprised. Only reviewing for the drive thru experience. Came down from Big Bear via State Route 38 & you will not miss this place. We did a drive thru to order some rootbeer floats because duh, it's A&W. We got a rootbeer float in small, medium, & large. LOL. And just a regular rootbeer to go. It is so good & the large can easily be shared among 3. Can't say anything about the food but we'll come back for those cheese curds one of these days. read more

They were nice and hot just like everything else. My girlfriend said they were probably the best she's ever had and that they were really juicy. They were really good and juicy it's crazy she was debating getting a burger or the tenders but ended up going with the tenders which I'm glad. Too bad this owner can't hire decent employees or keep their products stocked! I went thru the drive thru today. The employees wouldn't even respond to the speaker for 7 minutes! And by the time they did, there were cars behind me so I could not get out of line after finding out they had no Root Beer and NO drinks! They are out of C02 so can dispense no drinks!! The employees were extremely rude in refusing to answer the speaker-I said "Hello -Hello" over and over and they couldn't be bothered to respond until 7 minutes had passed! This is ridiculous-so I had to sit in their incredibly slow drive thru line for 20 minutes just to get out of there! I was going to order food as well as 1/2 gallon of diet root beer to go.
