Favorite bakery in town! I have been here many times with friends and family and have never had anything that wasn't fantastic. I had my best friend's bridal shower desserts made here and everyone kept saying how amazing everything tasted. So far the best bakery I've had in PHX. I've tried upwards of 10 different places. Really, everything here(at A Bakeshop) is good as long as it fits your preferences. Some of my favorites: the macarons--especially the salted caramel, cream pie, sugar cookie, the cupcakes--especially the salted caramel. My friends are big fans of the various bars they have. I haven't tried any of the cakes or things they have to order, but if it's anything like the premades, I'm sure its delicious! Edit: On my last trip they had a few slices of cake available. This shop screams cute..... cute cute cute. It's like a bakery on a movie set, I kid you not. I walked by the shop after lunch and, despite being totally full, I just couldn't not go in... the vintage -y decor and neatly displayed pastries called out to me.... I was doomed. The people who work here are very nice, helpful, and friendly. Their recipes are mostly Italian based, which makes them a little different than other local bakeries. After much deliberation (and I mean MUCH.... like extensive), I tried the brownie and the cheesecake. The brownie looked kind of dry on the outside, but don't let that fool you, it was somewhere between a cake texture and a fudgy brownie texture, certainly not dry. The brownie was chocolatey but not overly rich with chocolate chips throughout. Was it my favorite brownie in town? No (I am partial to a fudgy more chocolatey and rich brownie). But it was very good and if I were in the neighborhood I would get it again. The cheesecake, on the other hand, was fairly awesome. This was no New York cheesecake. It was surprisingly light and airy, not the heavy oh-my-god-I'm-so-full-need-bigger-pants kind of cheesecake you get most places (not that I don't like that too, this was just something you may want to eat with more frequency). It was sweet without being overly sweet and they didn't complicate it with toppings or flavors, it was just a good plain cheesecake. Oh, and it isn't served in slices, it's served like a cupcake.... so cute. Anyway, each dessert cost 3$, so the prices are competitive with other local bakeries. Delectable and delightful! Spot-on prices. This new shop is on the fast-track to greatness. Everything is made fresh and you can really taste the difference. The cassata cake is light and fluffy with just the right hint of cinnamon and chocolate chips topping. Yum! The sugar cookie was a great homage to the classic jar cookie. And the peanut butter cookie was so very rich. My absolute favorite was the fruit tart!... Omg. The buttery, sugary treat just melts in your mouth and draws out the fruit icing topping. Absolutely delicious! The gals here aim to please. I was encouraged to taste a free sample of anything and everything. They really want to know what people like and how their treats appeal to their customers. Bravo! Also, props to the Bakeshop for serving Grateful Spoon gelato. Always is thumbs up! Wow! Love this shop! We have used Andrea's bakery for years, before she even had a storefront. She has catered many events for us and always does an exquisite job! She has so much talent and such an assortment of things she can make. Her cupcakes are my favorite in town. To be honest there isn't one thing I haven't liked. I called to order two cakes for my kids' birthday party on a Tuesday for Saturday morning pickup. I was worried about the short notice, but Andrea said it was not a problem. I asked for an "Annie" cake and a Minecraft cake, and I sent a few links showing what I had in mind over via email. Andrea was clear about the price and what she planned to make. Andrea was amazing to work with. I wasn't quite sure what I had in mind for my husband's 40th, but I wanted it to be spectacular. Andrea was very patient with emails going back and forth about design and she nailed it. We had the cake on the front entry table and nobody thought it was real, it looked so good! Note that they're offering a 10% discount for people who post yelp reviews. It is unfortunate that their promotion may be causing a larger amount of 5 star reviews that one would normally see. The sign near the register just says "yelp us" but I imagine it would be awkward for someone to leave a low star review and then show it to get 10% off their next order. I did not take part in the promotional offer. Pondered whether to give this place a 3 or 4. Parking can be nonexistent though they have one reserved space right in front of their shop. I tried a vanilla macaron and eclair. The white macaron was light, soft, and had a slight chew. It was MUCH smaller (maybe the size of an Oreo?) than French Grocery's but also much less tough/chewy (FG's was very cold though, so perhaps that was the issue). It wasn't as melt-in-your-mouth as Essence Bakery's tiny variety pack macarons I had before, perhaps because it came right out of the refrigerated case. The tiny little eclair's chocolate frosting/ganache swirl was very chilled, and so I didn't get the full flavor from it. The eclair had a nice light and flakey texture, and the custard filling was excellent. Both items were $2 for about two to three bites a piece. It's not incredibly expensive, but it also is solidly a "tiny indulgence" that feels more appropriate as a a cute gift or a treat plucked off a shiny tray at a party, as opposed to a nice after-dinner dessert. I suppose I am more accustomed to the large "this can last me two days" pastry from somewhere like Urban Cookies or AJ's. It doesn't exactly feel like a "good value" when the items are so tiny, but you do get to try several items. The cashier/worker was friendly, though she had to ask someone who I assume was the baker what the eclair filling was. Still, pleasant people and pleasant atmosphere! I feel the packaging and branding could use some work for the prices they're charging. Their plain white paper and brown cardboard packaging could look a lot more marketable with a nice large store logo sticker on it, for example. read more

On Friday afternoon I got word that a birthday was coming up... on the following Monday. Not only that, but the desired cake was going to be a chocolate-coffee cake for ~20 people. Cue a bunch of phone calls from someone outside of the Phoenix area trying to find a bakery that could handle it. Bakery 1- Like you want one of those breakfast pastry things? Bakery 2- Sorry, no way we can deliver on such short notice. And Bakery 3 was A Bakeshop, who was awesome to work with. Described the general parametres of the order, and as a person who really has no experience with chocolate-coffee cakes they were quite helpful in taking most of the burden in figuring it out. Everything was going great until I told them that I would pick it up at 6pm on Monday. Because they're closed Mondays. But they assured me that we could work something out, and come Monday they were there to hand off the cake (even though I was 10 min late). I used to like this bakery until last night. I stopped here to pick up some treats for my fiancé and I, two cannoli's and two carrot cupcakes. The cannoli's were decent but my carrot cupcake was a different story. The first bite was delicious but my second bite stabbed the roof of my mouth, literally. I stopped in mid bite, spit it out and noticed that I had bitten into a toothpick. I pulled the cupcake apart and there was the rest of the toothpick. Their pastries are delicious! Unfortunately I'm giving 2 stars because their customer service borderlines on rude. In the past I've brushed it off as irritation because I came in with small kids, and maybe the people that work there don't care for little kids! But today the girl working there was one of the rudest people I've ever seen in the customer service industry. I checked their website before arriving to see if I could order online. It said to call and they would bring the order out. But their menu online just says assorted cupcakes, cookies, and bars. Their front door said to call your order in, but if you had questions to come in. Since I had no idea what they had left one hour before closing, I tried to come in. That's when a young girl came out and said "yeah?" I said I wanted to get some treats for the 4 kids I had in the car, what did they have available? She said "macaroons, cupcakes, and bars." I asked what flavors, because I couldn't find a list online. She sighed, rolled her eyes and started listing macaroon flavors. When I asked her what cupcake flavors were left she gave me a death glare and said "strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla." I said great, I'd take 3 of each. She asked what kind of frosting I wanted and I said again "I don't know what flavors you have, what are my options?" She said "ugh never mind I'll get your cupcakes." Before she could close the door on me I asked what kind of bars she had, figuring I'd get something for my husband and I for after dinner dessert. She acted like I asked her to wash my car with her toothbrush! She said "unicorn bars." I asked what those are, because again there isn't a description on the website! She said "we got peanut butter brownies too." Great I'll take two! As I hand her my card she had the nerve to ask "are you tipping your baker today?" Really? After the eye rolls, sighing, and attitude you want a tip! I figured maybe she was having a bad day so I said "sure, add $2 on." Finally that put a smile on her face. But then it took 10 minutes to bring the order out. She hasn't mentioned it would be that long of a wait when she knew I had kiddos in the car! In fact, the only stress I had throughout the wedding process was caused by A Bakeshop and whatever the owner happened to be going through at the time. From the moment I put in the deposit on the cake, it ended up being nothing but errors or her part. How hard is it to get 3 flavors and the color of a cake right? After several emails back and forth, I legitimately wondered if we shouldn't have a Costco cake as a backup, because I was seriously wondering if they would even deliver the cake! The day of our wedding, we were just happy to hear the cake had been delivered for the reception, but I have to say, instead of a pink cake (like I ordered) it was white. Also, the cake was just not good. Completely different from what we had at the tasting and not worth it. I wish we had gone somewhere else (even Costco would have been better taste wise) and not wasted well over $1000 on such a bad cake. I ordered a 6" banana cake for a birthday, paid in advance $55 for it and was expecting something decent looking especially at that cost and the amazing Yelp reviews this place has earned. However, was completely shocked to find the cake presented in a plain brown card box that was too small and the remaining part of the cake that didn't fit in the box was covered with Saran Wrap. Unbelievable! I wish I had taken a picture of it to show as proof. But it was so ugly looking I didn't even bother to take any photos. Was completely embarrassed to be seen carrying it around. And the birthday party was held at a restaurant, too. This cake had made me feel like my event was a total failure. Everyone thought the cake was no more than $20. It cost me $55. Did I make the mistake of paying in advance and therefore they didn't even bother to find me a box that fit? They make cakes for weddings yet they didn't have a box for a 6" cake? I hauled @$$ after a long day at work to get here before closing, and maybe it was because I came so late in the day, but the selection was limited. The already limited selection was further limited for me, because almost every item had some sort of edible glitter! Am I the only one who is reminded of metal shavings when there is shiny stuff on my food? Perhaps. In any case, I got a slice of cake that was described to me as a cake version of a "cannoli," and a macaron. The cake itself was nice and moist, but all together, it was overly sweet - too much frosting, not enough cake. Also, the slab of sugar (frosting) separated from the layer of cake when I was "knifing" it with the side of my fork for a bite, which kind of turned me off - that typically happens when the cake is dry, and has been left out for a while, which it didn't seem to be. I didn't finish the slice, and didn't bother trying the macaron at that point - I think my roommate may have helped himself to it. The person behind the counter said A Bakeshop is known more for its cookies, so maybe I just didn't have the right expectations going in as I was jonesing for a decadent, cakey treat. However, I likely will not be back, especially because getting in and out of that center can be very stressful. Not only are spots limited because of TexAZ patrons, it's almost impossible to exit west on Bethany home on the south side, or make a left going southbound on 16th street during rush hour. read more
