They installed a new AC system for me. Installation crew spoke little to no English and could not explain the use and programming of the smart thermostat at all. A few days later, another of their technicians, Juan, came to the house to inspect the installation. He was busy patting himself on the back over some adjustments he made to the system, but then I asked him how to program the thermostat and explained some problem issues I had with it. Well, Juan couldn't program it or address my problems and he said he'd get back to me after speaking with the manufacturer. He never got back to me. So I called the company a few days later and was transferred to Lorraine. She was up the food chain somewhat, so I felt better about this. I explained the issues to her and she claimed to be scheduling a service call for me as we spoke, but I never heard anything on that. A follow-up text to Lorraine days later got no response. I called the company again and was transferred to Sarah. I provided another explanation of the problem and she asked if they installed the thermostat. I answered "yes" then did not hear from her again. After six days, I texted her back to ask if they at all intended to help and just say "no" if they don't. She said "of course" and offered to send someone over but first wanted to send me a "cheat sheet" for programming. She emailed it to me and it proved much less detailed than the owner's manual, so no help there. I text replied to Sara someone should come out to see the thermostat and asked if they had other compatible thermostats I could switch too. Eight days later, there was yet another period of "no response", so I gave up with them. I had another company over (Family Air Conditioning of Simi Valley and certified for the make of my system) and they called the manufacturer and made some adjustments to the system. Within a few hours, problem solved.

The first company I called I asked if he did repairs or only replacement systems. He said, "I do repairs. That's why it's in the name!" "Great!" I thought. When he checked our system he told me the compressor was bad, which was expected. I asked if he could replace it with a new or reconditioned compressor, but he said no, because the system was about 10 years old and used an older refrigerant. He said the only option wasto replace the entire system. He also said we had an asbestos-wrapped pipe that would need to be removed by another company before he could do the work. He offered to get me in contact with that company, but never did, even after I followed up. So, in the meantime I decided to call Mike's Air. It was late on a Friday. We had Slava out by Monday. He checked the system, confirmed the compressor was bad, and gave me a very different answer: yes, the compressor could be replaced. He was straightforward about the pros and cons of buying an entirely new system vs just replacing the compressor. No selling. Just facts. The price for replacement was very reasonable compared to a full system, so I figured it only has to last about 4 years for it to pay off vs buying a new system now. I gave the deposit and about a week later the compressor arrived. Slava came out the very next day -- on a Saturday -- and installed it. Everything is working again and we couldn't be happier. Not just cuz we saved money (short-term), but I felt confident that Slava was doing a professional job. What impressed me most was that Slava/Mike's Air actually gave us a repair option instead of automatically pushing a full replacement. Slava was knowledgeable, straightforward and professional throughout the entire process, as was Rhea back at Mike's. Highly recommended.
