My aunt had ordered me a cake from A Spoon Fulla Sugar for my wedding reception. We were very excited for this cake, it was 3 tiers. The cake was delivered at 1:30 pm the day of. We were beginning to cut the cake at 7 pm ( plenty of time to thaw we thought). As we cut it, the icing was very thick. The icing was like a brick and was just falling off the cake. As we cut the actual cake itself, it began to crumble. Every single piece of our cake fell apart while cutting. We used 3 different knives to cut it and had 2 different people attempting to cut it. We tried bigger and thin slices. Each piece just crumbled. The actual cake itself did taste good, but the icing was so thick. It was more icing than actual cake. We were very disappointed. My aunt went back to the store to get the issue resolved. It was her wedding gift to us and she wanted us to have a very good cake. She talked to the owner of the store and presented him with a video of the cake cutting. His immediate response was to blame the knife we used. He then asked if a caterer cut it. We did use 3 different knives ( two of which were designed to cut and serve cakes ). For cakes at this price point, if it needed such specific instructions for cutting, it should be known to the customer beforehand ! He did offer a refund but my aunt preferred the cake remade as this was a present and she wanted it done well for us. When we got the cake remade, it was beautiful. They made it better the second time than the first. They also included specific cutting instructions with the remade cake. This would have been useful to have the first time. When they dropped it off the first time no instructions were included and the people who dropped it off said nothing. They said multiple times they assumed we would be having a caterer which is why they didn't bother to say anything and then proceed to blame us later when the whole cake fell apart. Every single person at this cake shop had an attitude about the situation and could not be bothered to apologize or seem remorseful for the situation. If I could give them more than 5 stars I would!! I am so picky when it comes to cake and A Spoon Fulla Sugar literally knocked every flavor out of the park. All of their flavors are very moist! We ended up using them for our wedding and with COVID and having to reschedule to another date they were very flexible. They did a great job with working with our budget and giving many recommendations so that we could have the cake we wanted. I showed them a picture of what I wanted it to look like and they were great south saying without color swatches they couldn't promise the exactly color, I wasn't picky with color so I didn't sent that end but it ended up looking just like the photo (but I bet it tasted better ) We had so many compliments at our wedding and a few of our friends used them for their kids first birthday cakes after trying them! Best cake I've ever had! I found A Spoon Fulla Sugar searching local bakeries online and was disappointed that even though they were right down the street from me, I had not heard of them before (having driven past them for many years). I needed a cake for a friend's birthday so I gave them a try. I was not disappointed. I went in planning to order one cake (banana flavored w/ strawberry filling and a buttercream icing) but left ordering a second one also (white w/ white chocolate mousse filling and buttercream icing) for the party. The woman that took my order was very helpful in guiding me through the options and designs for my cakes. Their website was also a great help in getting ideas for cakes. The cakes did not only look great but they were delicious! Everyone at the party loved them and many were asking where I got them. The cakes were moist and the icing was extremetly smooth. Like I said earlier, it was the best cake I ever had. Although this was my first time ordering from them, it certainly won't be my last. Before writing this review I wanted to give them a couple days to respond to my issues which they have yet to. After shopping around for our cake for our wedding we decided to go with Spoon Fulla Sugar after the taste test it was a no brainier. Our wedding was for May 23rd 2020 but with Covid happening we weren't able to have it. We had asked for our deposit back which they responded with that they were not able to refund us , but that we could however use it for something else with them. We said sure and knew my daughters birthday was coming up and could use it then. I had called them a little over a week before her birthday on the weekend of the 18th July. I talked to Tori about what I would like which was a Frozen cake and asked if they could do it by then and she said yes that their cake decorator would be in contact with me. She said the cake would be 50 plus 15 for the Elsa face. I said that's fine. Received a email a couple days later basically saying it is ok to use our wedding cake deposit for my daughters cake and that there wasn't going to be a face on the cake but a statue. I did however over read the part of now its a statue and not a face which is my fault. Come Saturday they told me they were open from 10am to 2pm and they do touch less pick up, so I showed up at 11ish, was handed the cake and my first thought was this cant be a 65 dollar cake. Before I could put the cake down and say anything the gentleman was back in the building. I pulled out of the parking lot to the light at Fieldsertle and Elsa is bending. I'm passing Meyers not even 10 mins from their shop and Elsa is bent in half. I get home and she has broken in two. We tried to fix her but there was no way. After eating we had cake. After taking a bite it just did not taste right the cake was not moist and the raspberry filling was very sour tasting. Well later that night Me, my wife, my daughter and two family members were up at night sick from food poisoning. I'm attaching some pictures. I am normally a grocery store cake person but after seeing a couple of their custom birthday cakes and having a "credit" I thought this would be perfect. I recently got married and decided to make Spoon Fulla Sugar a part of the wedding by ordering one of their cakes. When we went to the tasting,we were amazed by how delicious everything was and happily decided on them. We went through the details of pricing and options and were given a copy of the notes that the coordinator took of what we wanted. A few weeks later, we received an email urging us to make another appointment for a cake design session. We expected this would be a time in which we would be given some more details about how our cake would look, possibly a rough sketch. Instead, when we arrived we found that they didn't have any of the information from the previous session. We reiterated to the coordinator what we wanted the cake to look like, but she seemed pretty distracted and after being there only 5 minutes she declared that we were done. We had no further contact until the wedding night, when the cake arrived looking vaguely like what we had ordered. The flavors were right, but some of the details that we had requested on both visits were missing. Our wedding cake ended up looking rather sparse and plain compared to what we had hoped for. I was dismayed when I realized that I had been driving by Spoon Fulla Sugar for an entire year without seeing it or stopping in! It smells wonderful when you walk in - it appears that everything is made fresh in their kitchen. I tried an Apple Pie Cookie - such a clever idea... I'm mad that I didn't think of it first. Also tried a peanut butter cookie (yum), mini chocolate cupcake (yum) and raspberry filled cupcake (double yum on the buttercream icing). Cookies are $1.25, Mini Cupcakes are $1 and regular cupcakes are $1.75. They have a large variety of baked goods from cinnamon buns and scones to wedding cakes. Written from a guy's POV: Freaking best freaking cake I have ever had!!!!! I used to think that cake was just an icing holder. This cake is super moist, you might even say damp (in a good way). I am not sure I have ever had icing that tasted better. Honestly, words can't do this cake justice. Decorations were solid (not important to me). I didn't end up using ASFS for my wedding cake but did a tasting here. They had a pretty good variety of cake and fillings. It's a cute little shop, and they accommodated us even though we didn't have a reservation. My maid of honor ended up using them for my Bridal Shower cake and it was fantastic, much better than what we sampled at the tasting. Everyone really loved the cake. It was decorated wonderfully and tasted even better. Can't speak to the service since my friend did all the work on that, but she didn't have any complaints that she voiced to me. I got married 6-21-2013 I'm new to yelp so please forgive my delayed review. I want to say my experience with Spoon Fulla Sugar had high as well as low points but in the end I am a satisfied customer. Originally I made an appointment for a cake tasting for myself and a girlfriend of mine. What I loved about this place is they let you sample ALL of their cakes as well as the frostings. They were pretty generous, giving you enough cake to sample amongst all of the fillings. From time to time, someone would come and ask how everything was going and if we have any questions. Towards the end of our tasting the woman came out with clipboard to start going over my plans for the cake. The pricing per slice were very competitive to what else was out there in the area which was also pretty important to me. This is when my peak kinda tumbles down. I provided images of the type of cake that I wanted. She expressed to me at the time they could definitely replicate this cake without fondant which would make the cake WAYYYYY cheaper. After going to a few more tastings with other places I decided Spoon Fulla Sugar was it! it wasn't until I called to place the deposit I was told my cake (feeding 100) was actually going to cost around $700+ and that the only way to replicate was in fondant. Feeling deceived I called my 2nd choice and put the deposit with them. As weeks went on, I still felt like ASFS was the best tasting and like every girl, I wanted my day PERFECT. Through email correspondence with Molly we found a design within my budget and it turned out well. I ended up spending more than half of the original pricing on my cake. My Flavors chosen where: Bottom- white with Oreo filling, Middle - Strawberry with Triple Berry filling, and Top was Chocolate with Reese's filling. When I say everyone raved about this cake, everyone raved. I didn't even see folks scraping off the buttercream (as most people think it's just blah) This cake was amazing!! Terrible. Do not use. I ordered the simplest wedding cake you could imagine, 2 tier white frosting. It was discussed in person, over the phone, and a photo provided of exactly what I wanted. I get my cake to find edible silver glitter all over my cake. When asked about it, they say they put it on all their cakes which was never mentioned previously. I had a tasting for my wedding cake at A Spoon Fulla Sugar and was very disappointed. I did not ultimately hire them. The reason I did not hire is because they seriously have a listening/customer service problem. When we arrived for our appointment, the tasting was conducted by a girl about 21 years of age, who could not possibly have been an experienced baker, just a shop assistant. She was nice, but lacked training in customer service. She had obviously been just given a standard questionnaire to ask the client and was not prepared to answer questions about design, just get my number of servings, etc. She brought us a tray of the different cakes and icings, and the cake was very good, I will say that. However, then we got into the design portion. I had several Pinterest examples of cakes I liked and I REPEATEDLY said that I wanted to work on a UNIQUE design using these elements as a jumping off point. The girl was not remotely qualified to do that, but told me to narrow it to my top three and the baker would let me know a ballpark price for the type of cake I was looking for. I cannot say how many times I emphasized that I wanted something unique, not a copy of something on Pinterest. Feeling very underwhelmed, I decided to still give them a fair shot. I emailed my three top Pinterest pictures and sure enough, what I got back was the pricing to make exact copies of the pictures I submitted. At that point, I decided to move on to someone who wanted to actually work with a client, not just do assembly line cakes just like everyone else's. If this company wants to win business, tastings should not be entrusted to the least experienced person in the shop. That's the time to be impressing potential clients. They also might know that if they bothered to ask. I received a follow up several months after the tasting because they appeared to be under the impression that I actually intended to hire them. I informed I had found another baker and just got an "ok" in response. They didn't even bother to ask why I might have chosen someone else, which confirmed that I made the right decision. read more

I was looking for a bakery to do my wedding cake. ASFS seemed to be the place to go since they were at every bridal show I've been to and throughout the web. HOWEVER, the only good thing that I can say is that they are very accommodating when scheduling appointments. I went in for my tasting and this is how it went: -walked in and was directed to sit at a table; no one introduced themselves; no smile, nod, wave or anything. -we were told to look at the books for designs; about 15mins later a plate of cakes, fillings and icings were placed in front of us and explained. We were left alone. As for anyone, being that its my first wedding I'm not sure how things go or anything so a little more help and PERSONALITY would be nice. The cake samples were VERY DRY and some of the filling flavors were dull. This was my first cake tasting experience and they kinda ruined it. ASFS should learn to be a lot more personable and share the bride to be excitement. Customer service and a good customer experience is what sells me. So of course I didn't use them for my wedding cake. read more

Absolutely the best part of wedding planning for me was cake tasting. I went to every bakery open on the weekend for cake tasting in Cincinnati as I live out of town. A Spoon Fulla Sugar was the last bakery I visited and by far the best. It didn't hurt matters that I'd been struggling with my ideal cake design & I saw the perfect one as soon as I walked into their shop. I'm a chocolate girl & it was very important to me that I have a chocolate wedding cake. I tried all their flavors though and was pretty impressed with the hummingbird cake. I settled on two flavors: chocolate with oreo icing, and white with chocolate mousse icing. In addition to being the best tasting, A Spoon Fulla Sugar ended up being the least expensive by almost $200, including delivery and a cake stand. Everyone at the reception loved the cake and the leftovers were still good a few days later when I took them to work. I can't wait for our one year anniversary cake! read more

My husband has ordered my birthday cake from A Spoon Fulla Sugar for the last several years, it has become a tradition for our family. When I picked up the cake, the young man that brought the cake to me, opened the box slightly & said here you go (I couldn't see what it said), I thanked him, and took it to my car. Luckily , I opened it because it was not my cake. When I took it in he said, oh sorry, went to the back, and brought out my cake. When he opened the box this time, I commented that the cake looked very small compared to all of the other cakes we have ordered in the past , but he insisted it was the right size. I said, I'm sorry , but I don't believe it is, he said yes, it is. I called my husband immediately & he said he would look at it when I got home. when I got home, it was indeed not the 8 inch cake he ordered, but by then the store was closed. We called the next morning, left a message, with no return call. We decided that we would just go to the store with the cake. The young lady that first helped us was extremely kind to us. Well, then Jamie came to the front to speak to us. She was not sympathetic, unapologetic & even laughed at me. The first thing she said was you are on my list to call today. She then proceeded to say our prices have gone up (we never even brought up the price, only the size ). I told her we did not get to eat my cake m because there was not enough cake for everyone & I told her I did not think it was funny ( she continued to laugh at the situation). She then walked away from us, waived her arm at us in a dismissing manner while walking into the back. She came back out & told my husband , she was just giving him his money back. He then told her that he would still like a birthday cake for his wife. Jamie made no attempt to resolve the issue other than to refund our money, which is not what we asked for or what we wanted, all we wanted was the right size birthday cake. We decided to do 4 layers, and all of them were fantastic. The four we chose were white with triple berry filling, chocolate with chocolate mousse filling, pumpkin (fall wedding) with cream cheese filling, and carrot with cream cheese filling. Terrible bakery....cake was good, but service was terrible. My mom shopped around for the perfect place to get my sister her Baby Shower cake. After many hours and weeks, she ended up finding this place. We took a picture into the bakery from PInterest to have them make the exact photo. They said no problem. When we came to pick it up on Friday (shower was Saturday), we looked at the cake and the decoration was completely wrong. We asked them why and they said "the decorater thought it would look better if she changed it". We asked them why they did not call us to ask us if that was alright and they stated that most customers don't like to be bothered! What? Actually, we would have preferred if the decorater would have asked us since this was my sister's favorite cake and her big day. We didn't know what to do. But, we asked them to redo it and we would come back the next day which was a complete inconvenience since that was the shower and we were 45 minutes away. The complete topper to this bakery is that they do not have boxes to put the cake in. She was going to give us the cake on a silver cardboard cake plate and expect us to transport this back to our house 45 minutes away. I have never heard of something like this as I live in Chicago and every bakery I have got cakes from has a box they put it in. They claimed they do this all the time! So, if you don't live 45 minutes away and are really close to this bakery (like 2 minutes), you can order one. But, please be warned that they may change your decoration or may not even look at your order right. My mom and sister were very disappointed and will never come back to this bakery again. Its a very big hassle when you have to travel 45 minutes to get there, cake was wrong and no boxes to transport the cake with. Good luck! read more
