I had the masaman curry when I was here for lunch and the flavors were good but definitely not the best I have had. The curry fried rice is nice but a little too oily for my taste. On a business trip, found this place on Yelp. Wonderful Thai food, some of the best I have ever had. I ate the red curry chicken with bell peppers and green beans (they have 3 different red curry preparations!). My colleague had pad Thai which he also said was wonderful. We felt like Thai food and our kids were super hungry. I was so happy I found a Thai restaurant that close to where we were. We came in at 8:30 and the sign were off. The server seated us but she said that they are closing soon (30 minutes) so they won't let us eat there just to go order only. I never had this happen in restaurant before. This is so rude. The good: The food flavors & Location for people in portage. The food we receive was excellent in my opinion, but I have not experienced many Thai places. I compared this to my experience at Bangkok Flavor (not the original owners, but the new owners)..... This food was excellent. Oh and my wife loved her Thai tea. Not stuff out of a package or premixed...it was nice. The cons: Service was not good. It goes against what I believe not to leave a tip, but they did not earn the tip we gave. Slow, and absent minded it seemed. Nice and polite, but slow and seemed as though the waitress we had was new to the job or something. Also, I am not a fan of $1.25 for a 12 oz can of diet coke. Maybe its not common to have fountain pop machines in a Thai restaurants, but it would be nice not to be forced to buy a can at a time for $1.25 each. Overall 4 stars ...only because the service was not that great and you have to buy individual sodas. Other than that, the food was great. Already recommended to others, but gave heads up about the service. Hopefully I'm proved wrong on the service next time. read more

The environment is laid back but a little too laid back. I've been in several times and more so than not there is a young toddler running around often unsupervised. I have had to pull him away from the front door a couple times for fear he was leaving or going to pinch his fingers in the door. I also watched him play with the clean dishes stacked to serve people only to have them taken away and put back on the clean dishes. The food however is very good. I really enjoy their Tom Kha soup. The charge too much for a small side of rice and beverage refills are not free. That is a little off putting. The bill kind of gets nickle and dimed to a pricey meal. Worth trying as long as you don't mind babysitting while they make your food. read more

I am a Thai person who has lived in Kalamazoo-Portage area for almost 15 years. So far the experience of eating Thai food in the area has not been good. Most of the dishes I had at those restaurants were too sweet, oily, nutty, and had a wrong kind of spiciness (e.g., using Chinese hot oil instead of ground bird-eye chili pepper, etc). However, to my surprise, the pad-see-eew they made at "A Thai Cafe" was pretty close to what I had in Thailand (provided you order the "mild" version and spice it up with white pepper and vinegar and jalapeno sauce yourself). In a word, I am glad I ran into this restaurant while coming to shop at Sam's Club. I had a chance to talk to the owner, who was very pleasant and who told me she came from Laos, and had lived in Thailand for a while. I will definitely come back here again when I need someone else to fix Thai lunch or dinner for me! read more

We just left the restaurant after having lunch and we are fairly unsatisfied. The dishes we ordered were all really oily. The soup broth was okay but there was so little chicken it wasn't worth it. Not only was the food average but the service was terrible. The kid who served our table hardly spoke and when he did it was so soft we could hardly hear. We asked for brown rice with our dishes and did not get it. When we pointed it out he just shrugged. Not sure if he doesn't speak English or just doesn't care. I first ate at A Thai Café just days after they opened and then again a couple of months later. Both times I enjoyed the food enough to keep me interested. The first time I went I got the eggplant curry with fried tofu dish which was delicious and the second time I got the curry pad thai with fried tofu which was also delicious! I've had their Crab Rangoon appetizer and their mango sticky rice dessert. The crab Rangoon are fresh made at the restaurant, no pre made frozen rangoons here. I personally was not a fan of the mango sticky rice due to the mango's not tasting ripe. The prices are awesome for the amount of food you receive. Depending on how much you consume, I always leave with a second meal worth of leftovers. The second time I went I noticed how much they had updated the décor of the facility. They obviously are reinvesting their income into the restaurant for décor improvements! This place is delicious and the staff are super friendly. Also, the food comes pretty quick so it would make for a great lunch date spot. read more

Worst food I've ever had. Overcooked, slimy food with store bought sauce dumped over top and stir fried with frozen vegetables. Bean sprouts were slimy dark brown. Thai iced tea was watery. Noodles inedible. Took a couple bites and left everything else. What a waste of time and money. read more

This is my number one favorite restaurant. I love spicy food, and they know how to make it spicy - or not - without drowning things in sugar to cancel out the heat. Their heat scale makes it easy to order just the right amount of heat for your taste. My favorite dishes are the Drunken Noodles with shrimp, the Peanut Curry Veggie with shrimp, and the Tom Yum and Tom Kha soups with veggies or tofu (I always buy extra soup for lunch the following day or two!). The food is always fresh and expertly prepared. It is the one restaurant that I actually have real cravings for. In a way, I'm thankful I live 40 minutes away, or I think I'd go every day! The service is also outstanding every time I'm there. One tip - I've seen some reviews of people complaining about the portions and price - ORDER THE DINNER PORTION, EVEN AT LUNCH - it is only slightly more expensive than the lunch portion, but you get a lot more food and can save some for a snack or even another meal later. They will NOT ask you if you want the lunch or dinner portion at lunch - you have to ask for the dinner portion on your own. Enjoy!! read more

Best Thai food in Kalamazoo, hands down! The decor isn't much to look at, but the food is excellent. The Gaeng Garee is what I ordered and it was just perfect (and significantly less expensive than the Thai place on Drake Road). Also get the coconut ice cream for dessert, super good! read more

Sadly, I can't review the taste of the food. This is a review of the owners' integrity. I asked if they had any dishes that don't contain fish sauce or if they could make any without it. I was told that all of their sauces are pre-made and include fish sauce. When I pointed out that that means they don't actually offer any vegetarian dishes and therefore shouldn't have a vegetarian section on the menu I was told that the owners have been told that before and have no plans to change it. read more

I was a huge fan of this place and came here for years. It was very good food and reasonably priced. As a vegetarian, I was always told the peanut curry was vegetarian. I was assured it did not contain any fish or oyster sauce. On my last visit, I was told almost the entire menu contains fish sauce.... Was I being lied to this whole time? This was my second time coming today and I was just as disappointed as the last time a few months back. Last time they 'forgot' my meal was ordered vegan-it wasn't until I began to get sick and asked if they made it vegan and the server said she could comp part of my meal. Add insult to injury, why would anyone pay anything at all for something they didn't order, especially with a mistake that could have been deadly had it been for someone else? This time my spring roll appetizer took 20 minutes to come out, then another 20 minutes for my meal. The rice noodles in the dish were so soggy they broke apart when I tried to pick them up. When walked to the register to ask for chopsticks I was told 'yea hang on'. I mean really? The guy was my server, he knew exactly how long I patiently waited. He never asked how my food was until I paid. Never refilled my drink. Honestly I will not be back. It's really too bad because the only other Thai around that I know of is in Richland. read more

I miss working close by to this place but my waistline doesn't! haha I would constantly get lunch here and had no qualms about trying everything on the menu because it was always amazing. Their service has always been great even though they get incredibly busy at times! I find that my food is always ready on time or ahead of schedule, which is so nice.
