Between how long they've been around and how well regarded they've consistently been, it's not exactly shocking to see how many reviews A16 has accumulated over the years. Which, in turn, largely explains their popularity and why it's historically been so tough to get a table here. That is, until as of late it seems; after seeing available reservations pop up more and more often on OpenTable, it was like a sign that the time had finally come to check this place out! However belated it might be...
Although the restaurant looked rather dark when we first stepped inside, I really enjoyed the vibe of the space. Yes, it's loud, but I liked the dim and cozy vibe, as well as how you can sit at the counter and watch the open kitchen at work (the back patio space looked really nice, as well). Most importantly though, the menu looked terrific - lots of starters, pastas, pizzas, and meats/entrees to choose from, alongside the "Black Truffle & Grana Padano Festival" specials they had going on as well.

Burrata is a must for me whenever I see it and, fortunately, this didn't disappoint - the cheese was flavorful, stringy, and not very watery. Also, while a couple of the crostinis were borderline burnt, they complemented the burrata and olive oil very well!

I had heard the pizzas at A16 were quite good and I can certainly see why! The pancetta (there was so much), crema, squash, and cheese created this delicious mix of flavors. What's more, the crust was terrific - slightly thick and just a touch salty. Yum!

My least favorite dish of the night. On the plus side, the pasta was well-cooked and the grana padano was tasty. On the other, the sauce wasn't very good and the meat in the ragu had a weird/gritty taste and texture to it.

I was pretty hopeful for this dish (it was our one pick from their festival specials), but sadly, it didn't stand out. The noodles were perfect, and I liked the truffles, but the sauce didn't pack much of a punch otherwise. Not bad, just not super memorable.
Beyond the food, service here was pretty solid. Our server wasn't over the top friendly, but she and the rest of the staff were still pretty nice and accommodating. I just wonder the food was like when Nate Appleman was here; his views on SF diners aside, his time was when A16 seemed to get more notoriety. Our food certainly wasn't awful, but it'd be fair to say I was hoping for more.
Given how good the pizza and burrata were, I wouldn't mind coming back for those two, especially to sit in the back patio area on a date. However, with so many great alternatives out there now, I'd be hard pressed to round up from THREE AND A HALF STARS. read more
