My husband and I had dinner on Saturday evening with an another friend. I picked this restaurant because of the week of Italian cuisine in the world and I was craving to try the chestnut gnocchi. Unfortunately gnocchi were already sold out when we ordered (around 7:45pm). So I decided to try their pizza and I chose the one with mushroom (I asked not to have caciocavallo). My husband and our friend ordered Margherita pizza. We really enjoyed our pizza, it was well done (even though they didn't remove the caciocavallo, my pizza was very good). We took also beer and a Diet Coke for me. We completed our meal with a dessert, the montebianco because of the seasonal ingredients. It was delicious. The ambience is very nice and curated. It's not a cheap restaurant (pizza is above the medium average) and they also include in the bill a 20% fee service (I asked why they already include this amount and you can't choose and the waiter replied to me because the tip is split to everyone works in the restaurant). The waiter was nice, but I think the customer has the right to decide the amount by yourself because he doesn't know the process around the tip. Overall the experience was more than good and I want to come back to try also their pasta. read more

Between my fiance and I, we've probably eaten over 50 meals at A16 and their former sister restaurant SPQR over the years, not to mention the many work dinners and larger events we've hosted with them, but tonight almost certainly marked our last. Food and wine are consistently excellent, but issues with service take any joy out of dining here. Tonight we ordered two dishes to share to start and a bottle of wine. After several minutes, the server returned to tell us they no longer had the bottle we ordered. When my fiance asked what other wine of the same varietal he recommended, he pointed to something completely different (varietal, flavor profile, etc.). We pointed that out to him and asked for a few minutes to select for ourselves, and as soon as he walked away from our table, he began to mock us in Italian to one of the other servers, not realizing we understand the language. We bit our tongues, and ordered another bottle from him. Shortly after he left the table this time, our food arrived, still sans wine. Several minutes passed, and another man arrived at the table with a bottle that was not what we'd ordered, which he was confused and surprised to hear. Thankfully, he turned out to be the manager; he took over our table, provided great service, and ultimately comped the wine (a third attempt that was close enough we said yes), which was a very gracious gesture. I love the food here. I love the wine list. But getting mocked by the staff for pointing out their own error in hopes of getting just a little help was the final straw. We'll miss the food, but the apathetic and disrespectful service is just untenable. read more

BIrthday dinners are always special, and we celebrated a double birthday at this very popular haunt in the Marina. Well, let me just say that the wait staff was spectacular, first of all helping by serving the wine we brought (reasonable corkage charge) and then recommending really tasty dishes to compliment it! Everyone had something different - fish, meat, chicken, veggie - and everyone loved the prep, the temperature, the spiciness - big success. And the wine was great (thanks honey). This is not a review on the food or service- but rather than the "Required 20% Gratuity" on your bill. There was only 2 of us. Customers should have a choice on what they want to tip given the service provided. This is the first time i have ever seen this and think that management should fix this. Tips shouldn't be expected but earned. Regardless, we definitely would have tipped our wait staff well .....but it's the principle of it. read more

Went here for the first time and was so surprised at how large the interior was. It was very festively decorated for the holidays, it's definitely a cute date spot. I came with a group of 5 people so we ordered burrata, 2 pizzas, a seafood pasta, and tripe. For me, the standout was the tripe. Very savory in a light pasta sauce. The pizza was pretty good. The only average dish for me was the seafood pasta considering I got a large, The portion size was pretty small for what I ordered. read more

I haven't been to A16 in years, but I had such good memories of it that I convinced my friend to come out from Oakland. I feel embarrassed that I did. The food was fine (not as good as I remember), but the service was awful. My friend asked for a recommendation for something light bodied, but at a lower price point than their $24/glass pinot. The server replied, "I don't have all the prices memorized. I'll just bring you something." Weird. We had to ask whether we could order our food. After ordering appetizers, we started to tell her which entrees we wanted, but she waved her hand and, walking away, said "you can do that later."Later, another person came for our entree order, and that was the last time we saw anyone except a busser. We asked twice to have the heater turned on (all the others were on), and we waited an hour after finishing our entrees before I went inside and flagged someone down for the check. I had hoped for dessert, but c'est la vie. A mouse ran around our feet for a while. It was pretty infuriating to get the bill with 20% gratuity added to it. No wonder there's no effort at service. You can pay $60 before tax for noodles ($26) a glass of wine ($24), and "service" ($10) at A16. Or you can go somewhere else. read more

The Marinara pizza is where it's at! I've tried a few- the margarita, the sausage, etc. They weren't bad but the flavors of fresh tomato and juiciness of this pizza puts it above the level of most other pizzerias in town! We also adored the padrone peppers as well as the charcuterie and cheese board- absolutely on point. The wine is always perfection here, as well. When looking through their menu, I was immediately sold on the margherita pizza with burrata (I can never turn down burrata). The tomato sauce on the pizza was very fresh and the burrata was deeelicious! The pappardelle pasta was also quite good. Very solid wine list, as well. My fiance and I have been here a few times over the 12 years that we've been dating. Menu looked pretty decent. Omigod...the both of us were blown away with the pizza presented in front us in our cute compost box. Did the quality of this place increase over the years?! Did we just order the wrong things over the years?! We ordered three things: -Burrata Margarita Pizza - the burrata was AMAZING! So silky, slightly salty, going great with the sweet tomato sauce. It was an amazing combination, that when held, kind of collapsed, therefor forcing you to angle it in a way to fall into your mouth....in a great way....because you really wanted the whole slice in your mouth in one bite anyway... -Funghi Pizza - wild mushroom white pie...we added fennel sausage too since we wanted one pizza with meat....wow!!!! The mushrooms were so amazing!! I would recommend the sausage add on too, as it added an extra dimension to the pizza. We were shocked. -Pork Meatballs - delicious!!! They were so homey tasting, simple, yet executed so well. It was kind of on the expensive side, but honestly we loved it. Some things to note: -I do like their online ordering system, so I don't have to pay by card in person. The contactless exchange is faster this way. -Parking is somehow still really tough in this neighborhood, so bring a second person if you can, for easy double parking. Such a lovely experience! The restaurant's menu wasn't available on Caviar, possibly because they were about to close, but we called the restaurant itself and they took our order no problem. We got the "Bottle and a Box" - a bottle of 2016 Edaphos Barbera from Sonoma County, which might be my new favorite wine, and a delicious Funghi pizza. It was an incredible deal, was ready for pickup very promptly, and the pizza came in a very cool round compostable container. We will definitely be back! read more

I don't know why it took me so long to try this restaurant but I can now say it's one of my favorites in the Bay Area. I'm a sucker for a fluffy squishy Neapolitan pizza and this is it! Great service and delicious pizza. We got the formaggi and the funghi and I'm already thinking about takeout from their Rockridge location when I have to work in Oakland. Service was kind and professional and it was fun to hear a "ciao" and a "grazie" from the staff. I'm surprised their ratings aren't higher. read more

The real star of the place is the pizza. They're Neapolitan style - totally uncut, but A16 conveniently provides you with scissors that slice through the pizza with ease. Maybe not traditional, but very convenient! One thing I don't love about the menu - they have add ons to the pizzas like egg, pancetta, arugula. I'd prefer to be told which pizza these things go best on, rather than having to build my own. Regardless, I tried four pizzas and liked every one of them. My favorite was the zucca, which had squash and caramelized onions - a winning combo. We ended with dessert, trying the apple tart and the panna cotta. Marina has such great restaurants, and this is definitely one of the best Italian spots in the area! Such a beautiful venue with tons of seating, and in a great location. Enjoyed a great dinner, with amazing food here recently. Lovely staff but service is a little slow, so expect a longer dinner. Menu must haves are the burrata, maccaronara pasta, and salsiccia pizza! So I know that Valentines day is not the ideal time for going out to dinner. Most restaurants are hella packed and most established restaurants usually have a pre-fix menu on that day. I've never been to A16 so I was looking forward to the dinner. It's gotten some 4-5 start ratings. I heard the pizza is amazing and the ambience and service first rate. Some friends make the reservation for me and my lady so we were open to going on a late Thursday night. The prefix course was $95 each. We were a party of 4. The Valentine Day prefix menu was this: Antipasti Burrata - black truffle, olio nuovo, crostini Citrus salad - oil cured olive, sicilian pistachio, treviso, rosemary Primi Beet tonnarelli - sour oranges, garlic, goat milk, ricotta salata Cocoa ricotta gnocchi - wild mushroom, chestnut, leek, cocoa nib Secondo and contorni Acqua pazza - lobster, clams, mussels, meyer lemon, caper, saffron, chili, white wine Roasted potatoes - nepitella, calabrian chili Braised greens - tomato soffritto Dochi Blood orange-olive oil siobretto - cocoa tuile, chocolate Torta caprese - almond, burnt honey caramel, strega I was never so disappointed. Both antipasti dishes were just ehhh. The gnocchi was disgusting! It had this pasty, powdery texture like the potato wasn't mixed well or something. The tonnarelli was very bitter. I have no idea how the chef came up with mixing sour oranges with goat milk. It was so bad. For the secondo and contorni, the waiter gave us one small bowl of each dish to be split among us four people. We asked, "are we suppose to split this among all of us?" The waiter replied, "let me ask the chef". He came back with another small bowl of acqua pazza and said, "the chef is giving you an extra serving of this." We were all looking at each going WTH? And the bottom line for those dishes were again, terrible. The dochi was nothing to talk about. Also, my buddy was the one who picked the wine that evening. He and his wife just came back from Italy and the first bottle was from the town where they stayed. That bottle was actually delicious. For a second bottle, he picked a different Italian red. What came back was a totally different bottle that was not the bottle he chose and was way more expensive. I don't know if the sommelier was trying to pull a fast one on us but that was just unacceptable. The food turned me off after the primi that I just picked on the rest of the food for the evening. Needless to say, we all left hungry and completely unsatisfied. Granted it was only $98 per person but we could have gone to so many other place as have gotten so much tastier food and better service. Overall I'm giving A16 a kind 1 star review. Truly disappointing. On the food: our smoked burrata had stale bread, the pasta was massively undercooked (not "al-dente" but almost crunchy), as was the side of potatoes with our main course. For the service our poor waiter tried their best, but between a party of 12, two parties of 6, and three parties of 2-3 they were stretched thin and couldn't keep up. We didn't love the open containers of pasta sauce and mixers that seemed to be the ambiance. At least the pizza was good. No clue how this got a Bib gourmand.... Michelin ratings mean far less to me after this. read more

I organized a 19-person dinner for my coworkers in early March 2023 here at the Marina location and it was great. I don't have a lot of experience with organizing such events, but the catering representative (Angela Tomey) was patient and offered strong guidance, as well as flexible and responsive in re the array of dietary restrictions and allergies. Of course, the food was excellent, came out and was taken away at a steady and good pace, and the staff was really accommodating and thoughtful in re beverages and more this and that. The "atrium" is a lovely space as well. It was altogether a really positive experience and everyone had a nice time. I would definitely hold large parties at A16 again. read more

Super confused about why this place doesn't currently have an average of 4.5, at least. I ate there tonight with my parents and loved it. We sat outside, seating was above average for outside park let's. The inside is super charming, cozy and cool. We got a little gem salad, the mussels, the squid ink pasta, the chicken and the tiramisu. It was all delicious, really good quality, flavorful, and not too salty (I dislike sloppy seasoning at restaurants that relies too much on salt). A16 is popular for so many reasons: it's sophisticated. Unpretentious. Fun. It's also super busy. On a Sunday night, every seat in the house was occupied, so MAKE a reservation. The kitchen did an amazing job of turning out our dishes fast and hot. I usually prefer the food not to come out all at once, but we were hungry so on to the food we go! The special app of the night was a bruschetta with pureed fava bean on a thick cut rustic bread with a thinly shaved pecorino cheese on top. Is it worth $4/piece? I would say it's a delicious starter, with hints of lemon and mint, but it could be priced lower. The roasted calamari with agretti, Sicilian cucunci, basil and orange agrumato was pretty in presentation and wonderful in the mouth. I loved the freshness of the calamari. Our Funghi pizza had generous roasted mushrooms, smoked mozzarella, grana, garlic, oregano and olive oil. The peppery arugula that topped this pizza lends an interesting note to the smoky mozz. It was absolutely tasty, though the crust was not crisp enough to our liking. I've been in a pasta mood lately and the squid ink tonnarelli didn't disappoint. It had Manila clams cooked in white wine, capers and garlic. A little heavy handed on the salt, but the pasta was al dente. It's also not stated on the menu, but this dish had a little kick to it from the red pepper flakes. The polenta had a slightly crispy outer layer and moist interior. A nice side dish to our meal. Even though we were close to being full, we couldn't pass up on dessert: a chocolate budino tart with sea salt and olive oil. I've noticed the sea salt/olive oil theme popping up in a lot of dessert menus in SF, rightfully so, since the flavors really work together: the olive oil adds another dimension taste-wise and the salt brings out the chocolate flavors. A16's version is fantastic, a chocolate pudding sitting atop a tart -- the crust is slightly crumbly and the pudding itself hints of bittersweet chocolate. Service was efficient and unobstrusive, perfect for 3 ladies who just want to catch up on gossip! A16 still has room for improvements, but having a reliable restaurant in the Marina that features Southern Italian cuisine, well, that's another reason why they're so popular. read more

This review is for their food stall at Off the Grid: Fort Mason only. This was my first stop at OtG: FM last Friday, March 4th around 6:30pm. I met up Rodney H who suggested we share a pizza. Since I'm still off red meat, and he can't eat meat on Fridays, we got the Funghi: wild mushrooms, kale, fior di latte, truffled pecorino, garlic, chili ($13). The crust was soft with a nice chew, but I didn't find the slice very flavorful. For a slice without tomato sauce, I wanted it to taste creamier. I felt the slice was kinda dry. There were plenty of mushrooms, but not much truffle flavor. Since OtG is a food buffet for me, I only had a slice. The pizzas are served on a cardboard round. When I asked about getting a Pizza box, I found out they were a $1. Not wanting to pay a dollar for a box, I asked Rodney if he really wanted to take home the pizza. He ended up just finishing it instead. Good crust, but I wanted more flavor from the slice. Not sure how the pizzas are in house, but the Funghi from their food stall left me wanting a little more. read more
