We hired Able for a furnace replacement this past winter. They were fairly quick in getting a furnace in and getting us on their schedule. I arranged my schedule to be here for them the entire install day. At the end of the day, when they couldn't get the unit to heat properly, they realized that they had actually installed the wrong furnace. So I arranged my day the next day so that they could come and remove the incorrect unit. It was another all-day job and they sent out an entirely different crew than was out here the day before. When we originally got a quote from them for the work, they charged a $200 service fee which they told us would be taken off of the invoice if we replaced the system. They, however, did not remove or credit the extra $200 when we bought the $8000 system. I called and left 4 messages with their accounting person, Roxanne. Not one call back. I spoke to the receptionist and asked her to have a manager call me. A manager did call several days later and told me he would take care of it and make sure they refunded us the difference. After several weeks of not receiving anything, I called him back and again, he said he would take care of it. I called to ask for another manager 2 more times after that over the course of several weeks. Nothing. Nobody would call me back, no check was sent. So after me taking 2 full days out for the install, them installing the wrong furnace, and then stiffing me on the $200 we were told we would get back, I cannot recommend Able. It's been 6 months of calls and messages and being ignored. read more

Our furnace fan stopped working (for our central air). I have had good experience with Able in the past, so I called them first. The technician arrived, quickly diagnosed the problem as a faulty capacitor, and replaced it in about 20 minutes. All was good until I got the bill ... $480 for a 20 minute service and for materials that probably cost $20 or less. Unbelievable. I will be looking around for a new company the next time my HVAC needs service. read more

I had an Able tech come out to inspect my HVAC (heat pump) to determine if it was operating properly. The tech was not able to do the work, but I was contacted by the owner of Able later in the morning. He offered to return with the tech to help training him and refund the service call billing. This is the type of service and follow through you do not see today and I was impressed. Definitely worth using for your HVAC needs and I will use them again and refer to my friends. read more

We had a heat pump added to our furnace and a mini-split to our bedroom. I'll say that the installation crew were friendly, fast, efficient, and made the day it took to do the job go about as painlessly as possible.  The salesperson who initially came to visit was friendly and personable and was at least looking to provide a lot of information (as opposed to some companies who barely gave any), and Able has a good, long-standing reputation as a quality service provider. The warning flags started when the sales person couldn't actually email the PDF quotes to me...I let her know multiple times that the estimates didn't arrive and then she went radio silent for about 5 days. At that point, I followed up one more time - she apologized and got it to work somehow. I signed the commitment to the two installations based on Able's rep and the prices quoted.  When the salesperson initially came to look at the house, she thought a wall unit for the mini-split could work. She mentioned that they'd have the installation manager come before the installation day to verify everything. The installation manager said that only a floor unit would work and that they'd need to cut a hole in our bedroom wall A) for the connection to go through, and B) to make sure what they suspected was behind the wall actually was. But he also said they don't do drywall and basically that they'd have to just leave a hole there. He mentioned possible options like adding an openable door/latch to where hole would be cut. He said he'd go back and discuss it and let me know. I then received a revised estimate - apparently the floor units are $2,000 more than the wall units. That ticked me off - the salesperson never mentioned that if a floor unit would be needed that there would be such a price difference. By that point, I had already signed the commitment to the first heat pump and let the other bidders know I was going with a different contracter. If I had known about the possibility of the price being 2k more, I likely would have gone with a competitor whose price was lower. It felt very much like a bait and switch tactic. I communicated this to the salesperson (not irate or accusatory, but pointing out that if she had let me know what the price possibility had been ahead of time I could have made an informed decision). I got a response, not very long, basically saying their actions were justified but offering no real proof as to why.  Though I was not thrilled with this development, we had gone too far down the path so decided to keep going. I didn't sign the revised estimate yet though as I was waiting to hear back on the possibilities of dealing with the hole. Able called to ask why I hadn't sign it yet. I explained why I was waiting. They then had the installation manager call me to say he heard I had questions (??) - and when I explained, it was like the original conversation never took place. This time it was just that they would need to leave a hole and couldn't do any patchwork other than sheet metal (not desirable). Again, we felt committed to the job, though pretty irritated at this point.  The day of the installation comes. We both work from home but we have reactive dogs, so we made special accomodations for my wife to be out of the house with the dogs while the work was coming - which was to start at 8am. She had just left when at 7:50am I got a call from Able saying a crew member had an urgent matter so they'd have to move the job to a different day - completely making our plans to get the dogs away pointless. After trying to move it weeks out (when we didn't have availability) they agreed to do it the next day. But they didn't bother to tell the electrical contractor who showed up later that day uninformed that the job had been moved. Job goes smoothly the next day & is finished. They leave, night starts coming in, & what do you know..the system isn't working. We have to go on emergency heat because the heat pump isn't working and Able isn't open on the weekends. Monday comes and to their credit they come out quickly, find out they did something wrong & fix it. Heat pump works fine for the next month. Though our lights are flickering a lot. I call to ask about normal electricity usage (our bill showed our electricity doubled from the previous month). They say they'll call back. 3 days go by and no return call. Then the heat pump stops working. I call again. They send someone quickly & say it's electrical. They call their subcontractor, who comes out the next day & finds his people switched which electrical slots in the breaker box each heat pump was supposed to use...so basically the heat pump that needs more juice was on the slot with less overall juice. They fix it. Able said they'd need to come out again to verify everything is good...and their technician had promised to set up the system to switch to emergency heating automatically if the heat pump stopped working BUT Able never came back or followed up. read more

It's a shame when a small business won't do right by its customers. I honestly believe based on the size of leak/hole that they missed during original install. Company hides behind manufacturers warranty jargon and blames equipment manufacturer rather then accepting they didn't properly check system during install. Will not be recommending this company again not doing business with a company that actively takes advantage and seeks to make money on a customer during warranty work. read more

I do not recommend ABLE Heating and Cooling. I have a zoned HVAC system in my home. I called ABLE in June because I was not getting any heating or cooling in my downstairs zone. We set up an appointment for an ABLE tech to come out to my house and look into my problem and do an over all HVAC system check. The tech found that a valve in my zoning system had failed and needed to be repaired/replaced. He also found that my air conditioning unit needed to be replaced. We setup an appointment for a team to come out and repair my zoning valve and install the new A/C unit. ABLE even gave me a discount because I was having both items taken care of at the same time. The team came out and installed and tested the new A/C unit but didn't spend much time on the zoning valve. Nor did they test it. After they left, I checked and I was still not getting any hot or cold air downstairs. So, I called ABLE to get the problem fixed. We set a date, but the day of the appointment ABLE called and said that the installation manager who was supposed to do my repair had to cover for someone who had called in sick. This left me wondering why the sick guy's jobs were more important than mine. It became clear to me that fixing my problem was not a priority for ABLE. I cancelled my service request and requested a refund of the funds I had already paid ABLE for the zoning problem they never fixed. read more

From the initial meeting with Tom in September 2021 to the install team on February 28, 2022, the final home visit for paperwork last week with Mike and all interactions with the office staff, every step in the process has been customer centric. I checked out five HVAC companies last year to replace the 30+ year old Amana furnace that came with the house purchase and to install new air conditioner. Able was the ONLY company that: Listened when I told them I wanted an 80% furnace for like replacement, HE not needed nor buying; Offered competitive pricing for equipment to be purchased; Did NOT require half down at time of order; Regularly provided order status updates as COVID supply chain impact kept delaying receipt of the equipment; Did NOT require payment until after City of Tigard inspection conducted two weeks after installation; and, Would accept a personal check in payment even though a cashiers check was acquired by me for payment to them. Without hesitation I encourage anyone and everyone to consider Able for your heating and air conditioning needs. IMHO they are without peer in their business. read more

These guys did a great job. The AC went out over the week-end (middle of summer) and they were able to get out here in three days. Turns out it was a blown capacitor and faulty switch. They were able to identify the problem, had parts in the service truck to fix the problem, and were back in operation within two hours. During the most recent heat wave my A/C decided to.go out. I called three different companies who could only get me in 4 to 5 days from now. They also happened to mention that I could call after hours and pay double. Luckily I called Able next. As luck would have it there was a service agent in my neighborhood! They made a call to him so he stopped by my house within 30 minutes of my call. I realize this was a lot of luck but the fact that they were willing to fit me in, the fact that they had the parts to fix the problem, had my A/C running in less than an hour AND the fact that he took the time to explain what he was doing and why is the reason I give them 5 starts and the reason I will be calling them first with any needs!! My AC unit stopped working in April 2021 on a house that was built in 2019. I called the company that did the initial install as I figured they would know the most about it or possibly have it covered under warranty. It was a $150 fee to have them come out to diagnose the problem which seems standard so I had them come out to take a look at it. However, they found that it was low on refrigerant and the technician didn't have the equipment to find out where the leak was so it was an additional appointment to find the leak and repair it. Their follow up estimate to me was $2000. I chose to get a second opinion from Able and they said the same service was $1100 including a $100 fee to diagnose the problem which was them actually figuring out where the leak was. They found the leak instantly, repaired it, flushed the line, and refilled it with new refrigerant. Their final bill to me was $600 instead of the $1100 they originally quoted me. I was extremely happy to see a company come in at 50% of their original quote and the technician, Corey, was very professional so I would highly recommend Able to anyone that has repair issues as they won't rip you off like the original install company tried to do to me. read more

What a pleasant surprise to find Able and deal with friendly honest people. From the quote to the install of our dual zone mini-split I couldn't have been more happy with everyone I dealt with. Able did everything they said they would. A few days after the install we noticed a minor cosmetic problem with one of the heads and they immediately took care of it. I initially got a quote via Costco from another company that does a lot of TV ads. My out-of-pocket price would have been $5K more for a similar sized and quality system. So you might give Able a call, especially if you are considering something from the barking dog folks. read more

These guys are really good. As a retired commercial HVAC installer/fabricator, I especially appreciated Kelly's 'thinking outside the box' approach to my heat pump installation. Unlike our other (rejected) rubber-stamp estimates, Kelly and his guys went to great lengths to run the refrigerant lines through a very cramped basement ceiling space, so we wouldn't have ugly refrigerant lines hanging on the exterior siding. He was also very thoughtful about placement of supplemental indoor units in regard to the system's efficiency and worked with us every step of the way. His installers were professional, quick, neat, friendly and knowledgeable. I'd hire this company again in a flash. read more

Best furnace repair experience ever! We got up this morning to a cold house - furnace not working. I called Able Heating, talked with Ian, and where other companies had told me it would be 1 to three days before they could come, Ian said he had a tech on his way to another job in my area and could come right over! A half hour later, Nick pulled up. He had my furnace fixed (broken igniter), and that was great. But the most awesome thing was that Nick agreed to wait while I went to Best Buy to get a NEST smart learning thermostat (just 10 minutes down the road), and he installed the thermostat in about 15 minutes, then spent 10 minutes helping me to create the NEST web account, install the app, and set it up! I was charged for a half hour of extra labor on top of the service call, a bargain. And highly recommend Able. Awesome Able, they should call it. read more

My experience with Able was not good. We had an issue with our furnace, which we already know is old and on its last legs so we knew we would have to pay for some sort of part related expense. When I called, the guy walked me through some points on what could be wrong, great so far off to a good start. Unfortunately that didn't work so they scheduled a time to have a tech come out that same afternoon. I was charged $98 for this diagnosis visit, and yes it would need a part. Tech also took out the furnace filters as he said they were the wrong ones and mumbled his way through why they were wrong, he seemed rushed and didn't really explain too much but whatever it was fine. He said he would come out the next day to fix and bring new filters, great! Next day comes and no tech so I call them at 4:30pm and find out they had left me two VMs to "schedule" an appointment to come out a second time. I work from home and have two small children so I rarely get a chance to check messages during the day. I'm like the tech literally said he would come out and never mentioned I had to call the office to schedule!? But whatever mild annoyance, so they schedule me for the following day. Next day comes around and I get a call around 1pm that they are running behind and is that okay? What am I supposed to say, I was just like I don't really have a choice do I?! I told the guy that I had to leave at 4:30 to pick up my son from child care, he then said they would do the best they can. Umm okay...At 2:30 I called and cancelled as who knows when they would be coming. The woman did apologize and said she would check to see if the technician could refund the $98. It's been over a week and have not heard from a single person from this company. Thankfully I YouTubed the problem and I found a temporary fix of using lubricant on the wheel on the motor to get it going again, something that the tech could have at least mentioned as a very temporary fix. And also, the filters to our furnace are still on the ground where he left them so he actually left us worse off than when he came! Do your due diligence on researching companies cuz this one is speedy at coming out and taking your $98, but from there it will be a mystery on when they actually fix your issue. read more

A few weeks later I brought 2 other HVAC companies to bid central air and they each said the parts and labor costs should have been $450-600. I'll be installing central air with one of them. Mike and Cory saved the day!! Early last evening I turned the furnace on for the first time this year. The house quickly filled with a horrible toxic burning smell. Since the furnace is in the attic it was difficult for me to take a look. Was concerned for fire danger and the toxic odor so I immediately turned it off. I was a previous customer so I called. It was close to 7pm and Mike was still working, he calmly listened to my concern and explained a few things. Even thought they were fully booked Mike arranged for Cory to come out today. Somehow a piece of plastic got caught up against the heating coils and started to burn and melt. Yikes!! Once that was removed the furnace worked great no smell, all back to normal. I received an estimate from Able Heating & Cooling to have my furnace replaced and central air conditioning installed. When receiving an estimate for a furnace or air conditioner, it's important that the estimator take accurate measurements of your home and windows so that they can do a calculation (Manual J is common) to determine the load requirements of your home. The estimator from Able Heating & Cooling took no measurements for square footage or windows, didn't count the number of windows or note their orientation, and instead used photos on Google Street View to determine the sizes of the air conditioner and furnace that she recommended. She arrived with three estimates pre-prepared, none of which covered all of my requirements for the new system. In addition to providing an incomplete and inappropriate estimate, the estimator didn't do a good job of listening to my requests. I stated clearly that I wanted the highest efficiency models (for furnace and A/C), but she kept referring me back to a lower efficiency model. In addition, she spent about as much time photographing and gushing over my landscaping and interior design choices as she did on the actual consultation. When she left I was ready for her to go and I knew I wouldn't be hiring Able to do any work or maintenance on my HVAC system. read more

I was planning to replace my 20-year old gas furnace and air conditioner, and upon doing research learned that Trane is one of the most reliable brands. As an architect, I am particular about this kind of thing. Looking at reviews for local Trane dealers I landed on Able. Greg Grimshaw came out and we reviewed my current system and discussed options. The next morning I had detailed quotes on a half-dozen options, including available rebates and credits; I chose the highest efficiency one which was a heat pump with HE gas furnace for backup. I was able to get them scheduled for 6 days later and they 2-man crew showed up at 8am joined by a second 2 in the afternoon. They completed the job, which required some duct modifications, by 4pm. Initially there was a problem with the backup heat which was traced to a circuit board which they replaced within 2 days. The heat pump was located where my old AC outdoor unit was, but we found when it was really cold and was working hard it was a little too noisy early in the morning in our bedroom 15' away. I came up with a plan to relocate it to the other end of the house by the garage wall and mapped out a route for the piping & electrical. The move was accomplished in one day at moderate cost and we are now totally happy with the system. Able only does retrofits, no new construction. They don't ask for payment until they are sure you are happy a couple weeks after the installation. They take care of all the rebate paperwork and it is just deducted from your bill. to work on my hvac (to be fair it's a relatively older unit) but went on to say it was too old for him to work on and other hvac companies may be better equipped to fix it. He appeared to not want anything to do with the repair. He then went into the house and literally pulled the thermostat off the wall and completely broke it. Then casually stuck it to the wall without saying that it was no longer attached. And the best part was after a few minutes of looking at the hvac and then explaining that he didn't want to work on it he charged me $98 for the service call. The only service I needed up with was a broken thermostat. I asked him to also wear his mask while in my house and he took it off and when he did have it on it was not being worn properly. Jake and Josh! These two are absolutely fantastic. We needed a new AC and Furnace and we went with this company and it was the best decision we could have made. Jake and Josh were kind, respectful, clean and incredibly detailed in their work. During the install they realized our original furnace was installed incorrectly and had very poor workmanship. They took the time to fix what wasn't their responsibility - but they made it right because that's the kind of work they do. When a small issue came up at the end - they stayed and checked everything and fixed the problem before leaving. Everything was cleaned up, all old items were removed. Except for our new units you would never know how much work they had done because its just that good. I would recommend Able to anyone - and if you can request Jake and Josh.
