Our morning routine entails us always enjoying our first cup of coffee...be it the dependable drip coffee at the Bean on 1st Ave, the organic/fair trade drip coffee at Think Coffee on Mercer Street.....but on this first morning of Daylight Standard Time, we walked a few blocks to 7th Street to try Abraco for a cafe latte. Why? M-A-R-Z-O-C-C-O as in the handmade in Florence since 1927 La Marzocco - the Ferrari of espresso machines..... We're huge fans of espresso drinks, and when Better1/2 informed me that Abraco has La Marzocco, I said let's go! While walking our cranky cocker spaniel toward Abraco, we could hear the sounds of Chet Baker being played from a portable record player in the cafe. Abraco is too small to be considered a cafe in the American sense (with tables, wifi access and laptop-toting patrons or students scattered about the premises)--but with an outdoor bench, a window ledge counter with space for two, maybe three patrons to stand and sip their cafe--what Abraco may lack in size it makes up for with its superior espresso, made-to-order food and personalized, friendly service (Jamie greets each customer with a smile and sincere warmth!). Araco reminds me of the small cafe shops in Paris or Barcelona where patrons stop by and enjoy a quick espresso or a quick bite before proceeding along with their day. We tried the cafe latte made with homemade almond milk. Made with a double shot of espresso and almond milk poured carefully to create espresso art, I can honestly say that this latte tasted on par if not better than espresso drinks I've had at Ninth Street Espresso or Joe the Art of Coffee, but closer to our apartment. On Sunday, I hobbled my way down First Avenue in the midst of a hangover very, very rarely experienced. I am lucky, I can tie a mean one on and wake up fine the next day, but when I do fall victim to the hangover, it's extreme. I probably should avoid putting anything in my stomach at all. At least, I don't want to, but I know I should. Christ, where am I going with this? So, I decided to get a latte from Abraco. They don't carry soymilk, but they do carry almond milk. It was beautifully prepared and felt wonderful in my mouth. I couldn't drink it, however, due to my damn stomach problem. Whyever would I think this is a good thing, to waste a first trip to a belauded coffeeshop? You know how when you're nauseous and you make the mistake of eating something and then you can never eat it again? Well, I am determined to go back to Abraco and get a few shots of espresso. This morning I made my way to Abraco, a hole in the wall serving what some Yelpers claim to be "the best cup of coffee" that they have had. Thank you, Yelpers, for throwing absolutes out there because someone like me does not walk more than 5 blocks for anything mediocre. The coffee was not the only hook that got me moving though: it was also the possibility of trying their olive oil cake. So I trekked there through a surprisingly empty East Village. I assumed everyone was underground on their way to work until I saw a cluster of people jammed outside... a hole in the wall: Abraco. The noise and matter converged as if this little coffee shop was the black hole of the East Village sucking in whomever remained after the morning rush. I read rave reviews about many of their cups of coffee, so I resorted to the familiar: "un cortado" I ordered a cortado "to go" because there was no ledge space left in their shop, and I asked for a slice of olive oil cake. When I was handed the piece of cake in a waxed pastry bag, I could feel it was warm between my fingers and slightly heavy from the moisture. Under the sun, the olive oil covering the cake glistened in the morning. As I raised the cake to my mouth, I could feel the cloud of warmth that the cake was still emanating. The taste was mild, not too sweet, just right. The olive oil cake's body has a taut consistency; each bite is clean with no traces of crumbs. The body is just like a sponge, with memory & with bubbles that formed profusely during its baking. The aromatic aftertaste of olive oil lingers each bite. Abraco's cortado is like the Tequila of coffees. It is served in a cute mini paper cup, but small things can punch you in the face. First, the foamy milk pressed gently against me, and as my senses were delightfully tickled by the little bubbles popping all over my upper lip, a deadly sip of the underlying espresso shot into my mouth. The flavor of the coffee was very very dark. My tongue was pleasantly tortured. The flavor is very strong: bitter, smoky, rich, with tones of cocoa powder. The texture of the coffee is smooth and thick with no noticeable acidity. I'm typing this at midnight and I can still taste the cortado that I had this morning on the sides of my tongue. **TIP: Their cortado pairs perfectly with their olive oil cake. read more

We came here for the olive oil cake. I have been here before but I wanted my boyfriend to try it. It was exactly what we expected - light, moist and it melts in your mouth. The olive oil cake is so delicious! My boyfriend finished it in 1 minute flat. Definitely recommend trying it. This place is small and crammed. Has a very limited menu - with only coffee and few baked goods (which they run out often since they are so popular). NOTE - they have moved across the street! There was something amazingly secret and quaint about the old location. It felt as though you had stumbled across a hidden cafe that nobody else knew about. You barely had a seat to find, but the coffee that was served was the best. Well the success has led to a much larger location across the street and slight below ground. You'll enter and see a plethora of people, good coffee smells and merchandise, and people. Come get the olive oil cake and a cup of whatever you please. It will be amazing here. Let's just hope with the larger digs and more people that the ingredients, process, and taste don't suffer like many a shop have met once reaching greater success. First time here on the recommendation of my AirBnB hosts. Coffee is great and the frittata delicious and filling (fueling my journey back to Hartford). Very spacious interior with ample seating as well as stand up tables. Jazz is playing as I sip my espresso drink. It's busy but not obnoxiously so (could be that it's early on a Saturday morning). There is no outside signage, and it's a step down. While there's no outdoor seating, there is a nice little standing bar if you want to bring your coffee outside. I got the Caffe Latte ($3.50) to go. Served in a standard NY coffee cup (It's our pleasure to serve you), I stirred in two teaspoons of unbleached sugar sitting on the counters. The foam was beautiful. I grabbed a raised black lid, and realized it was too small. I grabbed the flat, white lid and put in place - I immediately cringed and took it off as I was walking outside. I fully admit - I licked the foam off the lid. First taste of the foam - oh dang, this is actually pretty strong. Bittery, espresso goodness. I was actually afraid at first that I didn't put enough sugar. A couple of sips later, I realized I could probably drink it without any at all (and I love sugar in my coffee). Perfect foam. Wow. Okay, probably the best espresso that has ever touched my lips. I have had Abraco bookmarked for over a year and I finally made it a point to stop by. I love that it is literally a hole in the wall, no seating. Purely about the product. I loved the outdoor standing area they had though. I thought that was neat and something you don't see outside of Europe. I ordered an iced latte since it was about 1,000 degrees outside. Their lattes only come in one size, a little on the small scale. However, do not let that sway you. This product is quality. From watching the barista pour the espresso over ice, top it with ORGANIC WHOLE MILK (I'm a whole milk fanatic. And organic...even better for the taste!) AND then he topped it with a small drip or two of cream....I was memorized. This place really cares about what they make. It was for sure strong...but Smoooth. So back to the small size, not sure I could handle a bigger size in regards to its strength. I really wanted to try the Olive Oil Cake but had just had lunch and was already full. Coffee was good, the space is cute, but the staff is so rude! This was my first time coming here and I was excited to try something new. I didn't know what some of the items on the menu were like "icy bear cold brew" so I just asked the barista what is something I can get that's sweet and cold. Best coffee in town, period. We're serious about our coffee, and usually brew at home because we find most of what's out there sub-par. Is it the beans? Is it the brewing temperature? Is it the milk? From each coffee shop, there's generally something we find at fault in the finished product. Not so with Abraco. They use quality beans, brew the coffee perfectly and add the perfect balance of milk to our lattes. My only complaint is that Abraco is very popular and very slooooooow, because they clearly take great care with every customer. The result is phenomenal, but it can be tricky if you've got a waiting toddler. The place is so tiny that I imagine there isn't much they can do to speed things along, but that's ok: this is coffee that's entirely worth the wait. Pastries looked fab too!
